Three more days until the D8 online servers get shut down. Feeling quite sad, D8 online battles means so much to me. It's been an enjoyable two and the half years though, how time flies so quickly. I still remember the time when I first tried it and when I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Didn't expect that I would have 40 cards by the end of it.

Have been making time and stop by the arcade almost everyday for the past few weeks to enjoy the online battles. I may not be the best D8 player by a long shot but I still enjoy this game so much. Will still stop by after the servers go off, but not as much.

I think this is the first time in Malaysia since D6 showed up in 2011 that we won't have any active online Initial D Arcade Stage game. I have my reservations of Zero that I've already noted, but I do hope Sega makes an EXP version and it appears here.

Today was also the last day for the DNET subscription as it would be 100 days since they stopped selling renewals. It will expire at 3AM Japan time on the 24th during the maintanence.

I have similar sentiments. Although it doesn't affect us NA players as much since our machines are always offline, I did get a taste of online battles and events for a few weeks. I still remember going up against a player with 5000+ wins when I only had 5 wins (smurfs everywhere facepalm.gif ) and grinding to stay in top 1000 in events. Everything is challenging in D8, but that's what makes the game so incredibly fun.

D8 may go away soon, but it will always hold a special place in my heart wavecry.gif

Finally got my first Specialist, at Tsukuba OB of all places, a course I don't even play that much. Glad that I'm able to record it on the official online records, since the servers are still up. It's a surreal feeling since I gave up hope on getting one before the servers close. Better late than never I guess. Feeling psyched happy.gif

Nagao DH will forever elude me, due to that darned CP2. I don't think I made progress on that for more than a year.

Played some D0 in Japan for the past few days. Apart from the improved graphics, bigger display and H-shifter that feels nice, there is nothing likable about this game. Still scratching my head trying to comprehend why Sega killed D8 and came up with this abomination. Well done Sega. Now I just hope they don't replace D8 at my local arcade with this shit, or I'm sticking to WMMT exclusively.

Hahahahaha, your description is what I had in mind right now. I'm most probably playing under customer card only, not planning to start my own card. The game literally looks like D6 but it is D5, according to Gods from Hong Kong's feedback.

Every two or two and the half years, they'll be an update so even though I was really really sad to see D8 go, it's the expected lifespan of an online Initial D game.

How was the wheel though? That's kinda what worried me most about the game cos the turning angle of the physical wheel is supposedly a lot less on the new wheel. Like not a little less but a lot less. One of the big things I like about Initial D is that wheel feels closer to that of a real car due to wide turning angles. It sort of ruined other arcade wheels for me cos it makes them feel like toys.

They were a bit of reports among the Japanese players that some of them break during the first week, probabaly due to many players not being used to the shorter angles yet at the time. I don't know how it has been since though.

Seeing some videos where people were doing top world TA records without braking in some courses were admittedly also making me worried.......

And this is before I'm taking into account that the courses were reduced by half. It's more and more sounding like Sega may have pulled another D4 - bad showing with reduced course count on a brand new machine. Makes me wonder whether they have to pull another Kai patch like with D4 if it's not really not well received.

=========

Still if it ever comes to Malaysia, I'll definitely give it a shot. It's an Initial D game and worth trying. I don't have any other arcade games to play anyways, Wangan is okay but just doesn't get me burning like Initial D could. Hoping against hope it's not as bad as it sounds.......but I'll be lying if I said I wasn't pessimistic even before reading your post. Haha, I'm trying to balance my pessimism and hope here and it's kinda hard to do.

In any case, enjoy the rest of your Japan trip! happy.gif

Yeah, that's a wise strategy. Full tuning a car requires fewer points now, but you need to hit lvl 30 to full tune, which takes a while. Most importantly, you should keep at least one of your infinity-ranked D8 cards and not upgrade it to this garbage!!!

Speaking of the gods, do you know if players like 九路司 and CHUNBB are still active? I don't see their videos anymore, not sure if they changed names or they got tired of this too lol.

Thanks, Japan was really fun happy.gif

The wheel angle has become one third of what it used to be - 180 degrees instead of 540 (full rotation). It will take a while to get used to, since IDAS has always employed a fairly high wheel angle. Initially, I hit the outer wall quite frequently as I tend to feint before initiating a drift, and I was feinting way too much thanks to muscle memory from D8. With the small degree of rotation, you have to be very careful with how much you turn to maintain your race line.

Also, the wheel is MUCH smaller now. Combined with the smaller wheel angle, your hand no longer moves that much to turn the wheel fully. For me, that reduced the fun factor a little bit. When playing D8 seriously with friends, I tend to sweat after a few races, but with D0 that doesn't happen anymore lol.

That said, I think the biggest problem isn't the wheel. It's the game physics and reduced number of courses. Honestly, this game feels as shitty as D4, except it's 2017 and it looks like Sega didn't learn their lesson from the past. Or maybe they're releasing this shit game to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of D4 facepalm.gif

I would say give D0 a try (as if you wouldn't if I didn't say that XD), but don't harbor high hopes. There's a chance you may like it, but I think most D8 lovers will find D0 unacceptable.

Edit: I should clarify that I played using a full spec lvl 63 car, so I did experience the "end game" physics.

Yup the ones who gave me feedback was none other than CHUN. He reach lv93 in two weeks or less. 九路司has already reach lv99 under another different name, was posted on his twitter account. Most top tiers refusing to show videos because it really shows a lot on how to conquer the game. So ya. Haha.

Oh wow you actually know him, nice network you have there laugh2.gif How did he get to play D0 though? I thought Sega hasn't released the game in Hong Kong yet, just doing some location testing.

So looks like the old pros are still active, good to know. Was a little worried that the scene has died when I didn't see them posting videos on Youtube lol.

Yup that loc test lasted for weeks remember? Well when you play this game long enough, eventually you'll get to know each other. Or at the very least you'll get connected to each other by online events, online matches. You'll tend to see how strong they are and slowly get to know each other.

Wow, 180 instead of 540 at full rotation sounds really really really bad. That would mean you can only turn the wheel from 12-3 o'clock clockwise, compared to 12-9'o clock you could before. It's basically my worst case scenario that I knew could realistically happen since its being used in Wangan. And that's before taking into the account the smaller size as you said, which amplifies the issue.

No wonder they were quite a number of reports of the wheels breaking within the debut week. Most IDAS players would not be used to it.

I thought 270 full rotation would have been a good compromise. Help the players that had trouble with the previous wheel while making the turn angle wide enough to keep the feeling of the previous games. Much like what Akii said awhile ago, it sounds like a cost saving measure.

I know it's a bit unfair to say this type of thing to a game I never tried but these changes are really extreme that it's easy to imagine the consequences to the experience. Judging physics is difficult without trying out but something like the wheel hardware it's easier to imagine.

I still sort of reserve some judgement for game physics, but I know how I'm gonna be feeling that wheel man. I can't even stand that wheel design when it was used in Wangan (and it basically sounds like Sega based it on that here), even though Wangan's gameplay fits that wheel design a lot more.

To me personally, the wheel sounds like a bigger problem than game software, even if the game physics is a worse factor for D0 specifically. The reason I say that is due to the long term.

Sega could always patch in problems with game physics or even with a new game (like say D0-2 or a D9), but the cabinet peripheral hardware would stay the same for longer iterations. The D4 machines for example has lasted ten years until D8. That means the new recent D0 wheel
are going to be a problem even if they make another good IDAS gameplay-wise.

Even if they do end up releasing a different machine for the next entry, buying up new machines compared to just upgrade kits will cost our arcades more money which will pass on the costs to us - or even make their chances of buying them lower compared to before.

It's too bad Sega didn't learn their lesson for D4. For all of D4's weakness as a game, the driving hardware was top notch which assisted future IDAS games. At the very least, none of it was a drawback compared to the D1-D3 cabs.

Over the years as a new IDAS game was about to come out, I always worried that they were gonna pull a D4. Well, they finally did it it seems even if I assume that the physics are good. Even factoring out the physics, the wheel and massive course reduction alone would be huge minuses personally.

The more I hear about D0, the more I think the name fits. It sounds like a reboot of the game series with many previous gameplay elements thrown out as opposed to say a normal entry. Things like "simplifying" the wheel and the super streamlining of course selection sounds like they are aiming for a more casual audience, which is understandable from a business standpoint.

Perhaps it would work out for them, perhaps it won't but it does sadden me personally since it doesn't sound like I would like D0 much. I don't think I'm part of the target audience.

You made some brilliant points about the steering wheel issue being more permanent and can affect future releases. Personally, it didn't affect me that much once I got into the groove of the game. But then again I started playing WMMT alongside IDAS recently, so perhaps that experience made the wheel more tolerable. I can see how it might become a huge turnoff for other players.

It's unclear why Sega made all these changes that significantly alter the gameplay experience, especially for veterans of the series. Perhaps it is, as you said, to cater to the more casual audience. They probably know that hardcore fans of the series will remain despite these changes. But if this is how D0 and future releases are going to be, Sega has lost me as a customer.

Congrats. It took me two and the half years to get my first D8 SP.

And I play the game a lot too.

Today I achieved my first specialist rank on Snow Akina Uphill with a time of 3:19:502!

I remember starting out on ID8 and thinking that the platinum times were seemingly impossible and specialist times were beyond human. Regardless, after much grinding on Myogi DH, I finally got my very first plat. Although I was super proud of it, I was humbled as people achieved times much faster than my slow plat time; a run that I felt I had given it my all. I never would've guessed that over the course of the year I would end up platting every course, let alone seeing a specialist rank of my own (even if it is on an "easier" course).

I know its just silly game, but ID8 has taught me a lot achieving the impossible and never giving up.

I do want to thank you guys, (Shinn, holnivek, DK Brawler, and SonicSP) for inspiring me to "git gud" at ID8.

Happogahara inbound specialist is next!

Wow a shoutout? Thanks. I need to get back to grinding some higher times as well, I should be able to plat Happo and then grind a tonne for Tsubaki Line. Grats on Akina Snow UH, let me chase that time!

Congrats. Maybe I should try Akina Snow UH for my first specialist too.

Which Round 1 do you play at btw?

Congrats and good job on your first specialist. It is the thoughts of improving one self and non stop training which makes one improve. You're doing good and on the right track.
