I read someone saying they are butchering 3rd Stage right now... They probably did that already 2-3 years ago when they showed a dubbed version at the Big Apple Anime Fest in New York City... |

They don't seem to respond to e-mail of any kind... I've sent comments, questions, rants (not all at once) and I didn't get a response from any of them.

I've received replies from them regarding the licensing of new anime and manga. That's how I learned that they've acquired the GTO prequels already. And about the Extra Stage non-edit of the bath scene: Just another reason to get it other than the brilliant 5.1 Japanese dub. 13+ rating? What guy hasn't seen breasts by age 13?! I said "guy" because women get to cheat at that. This post has been edited by Tessou on Nov 27 2005, 08:40 PM

IDW Regular Member Group: Members Posts: 245 Member No.: 8,289 Joined: Jun 19th 2005 Location: Update Profile | Right, I finally bit the bullet and decided to purchase my first Tokyopop Initial D DVD, just to test out the quality, since i've been watching the HK copies for years and am fed up with the sound quality. Right, to compare Picture - This is a bit of a let down. I was expecting a much crisper steadier picture. All the shaking about that you get in the HKDVDs is still apparent and still frustrating. Sure enough the picture quality is better, but it's marginal. 6/10 Sound - This is so much better (just to remind you i'm talking about the CLASSIC version) I can finally listen to the car sounds and Eurobeat music in 5.1 and not have the whole thing sound like it has been recorded in a Hall. This to me would be the biggest reason for buying the rest. 9/10 Subtitles - Ok, this is a tough one. Although the subtitles are much more accurately timed so we know who is talking and are somewhat correct. We are faced with a flaw with missing adult plotlines. For the quality and timing of the subs I can just about let this go and will give it 8/10 Presentation - The DVD box itself lacks any interesting artwork. I would have loved some of the manga artwork to be in place as the boxart, since we missed out in the manga itself. The menus of the disc are nice but nothing special. 6/10 Tricked out version - Why oh why? I was hearing many rumours of how bad this would be and thought many people were overreacting but sure enough, they weren't! The new songs do not fit in with the characters at all, especially when we open on the first episode to a song that would define Takumi as teenager with street cred and a moody underlining but not the dopey-bean-jam-bun-munching-sleepy-headed-couldn't-care-less tofu guy that we know and love. In terms of the music video style editing. It has made the race scenes unwatchable. Want to see Ryosuke twin drift with keisuke? nope we have to see them mirrored into a butterfly effect making it impossible to see just how close they are....pointless 2/10 (1 for effort and 1 for comedy value) I would consider that generous So at the end of it all, if you have the HK bootlegs and are thinking about getting the Tokyopop versions I have only this to say. Only do it if you have a 5.1 setup to make the most of the great sounds that you can come to expect from the anime and/or if you find the subtitles are frustrating and you can't understand what people are saying in your current copies. Otherwise don't expect much else to surprise you. I will probably look into purchasing a full boxset only if it happens to come down in price to something more reasonable in the future. hope this helps a few of you out. |

Ok, no ridicule if you please... living in the UK even hearing about decent anime is difficult, let alone getting hold of some so I've only seen the Tokyopop releases of Stages 1&2, correct the Tricked Out version is garbage, but how much has been altered for the classic version from the original. I thought the classic version is pretty decent, well timed subtitles, decent audio track... even the 'subsitized dating' sub plot is in there. So my question is this... What am I missing out on and where can I get it from |

if by "kids" you mean wannabe drifters then by all means. Their wrecks today can be someone's spare parts tomorrow! I think we're all in unison that the TP Dubs are horrible. KT should never have to hang with Tak (Takumi) (Takumi) and do "wicked" drifts. um...i'm pretty sure i didn't type in (Takumi). Did the forum do that? Man, i gotta lay off the gasoline. Putting back the names of some people doesnt really bug me. The greatest reason I see it that its crap is the missing Eurobeat. Eurobeat made every single race so intense that its a shame they took it out. Hopefully one day a hero will be upon us and present us the real initial d English version. |

Shmuck Group: Members Posts: 9 Member No.: 22,911 Joined: Jan 20th 2007 Location: Chicago | [B]I bought the Initial D Stage 1, 2, and extra stage DVD's from Tokyopop and I thought it was awsome!! If you have at least two speakers and a subwoofer, the sound is incredible! I swear, the subwoofer is like having an actual exhaust pipe coming out off your tv!! When I bought my first Initial D DVD, I started watching the classic version right off the back. After I bought the fourth volume, it ocurred to me to watch the Tricked Out version. I swear, I'm not exaggerating, I was only able to watch five seconds of it because I was twitching so bad that I immediately pressed the stop button on the remote control. Itsuki sounded like an 11 year old kid that was trying too hard to look as they say "cool". I have a better example, the characters seemed like they were trying to educate teenagers through a commercial about how it's not "cool" to use drugs. In other words, the people that dubbed the tricked out version were "trying" to add their version of what they think is "hip" and "cool" ( lol ) to the young crowed. I didn't get to see if they use eurobeat music because I think I might get a heart attack if I try watching the Tricked Out version again. So I don't know how much of the original do they show on the Classic version. I have seen subtitled episodes from the internet, and I do agree that the Tokyopop Classic version in Initial D is a lot more accurate to the translations. So for those people talking crap about Initial D from Tokyopop, I highly suggest you get the Tokyopop Initial D DVD's, get a cheap surround sound that at least has two front speakers and a subwoofer because the sound does make a HUGE difference! I bought my 5.1 surrounf system from Aldi for $40, and it sounds great!! Another place that I saw had nice cheap surround sound systems was microcenter (in Chicago), check their website for store locations or just look for big computer stores. I don't think they edited anything at all from the Classic version from the Tokyopop DVD's. They even play the original intros, credits and the Eurobeat music!! For those that don't know what I'm talking about, the Tokyopop Initial D DVD's have two versions to watch the episodes, Classic (subtitles with original Japanese voice characters) and Tricked Out (dubbed episodes with English voices). |

IDW Regular Member Group: Members Posts: 208 Member No.: 23,066 Joined: Feb 1st 2007 Location: Update Profile | I downloaded ripped HKDVDs, and the subs were all fine. They cheated and took ALL the subs from the fansubs, right down to "not for sale or rent." Timing was off on some of the subs, but it was still perfectly watchable. As for sound, I dont know, there's an echo on some eps, but I dont really mind it. I'd not buy the Tokyopop DVDs. I'd rather go support some guy in China with bootlegs than Tokyopop to make more shitty ID dubs. The only thing that really frustrates me is the manga. The manga I wanna buy and read so bad, but it seems so butchered. Sure, there's scanlations, but I have trouble reading over like a chapter with them, and they appear small on my computer, due to a 800x600 monitor. Plus, the main reason I buy manga is to read it on the go, but I cant take my desktop with me. Sure, I could invest in a laptop, but I also like mangas so I can read them during a power outage, and laptops dont work too long during a power outage. You cant charge them by shaking them, you know? |
