I know it says "The Phantom Pain", but this is definitely MGS5.

The barely visible text above where it says The Phantom Pain at the end even spells out Metal Gear Solid V.

It looks interesting but I'm honestly not too hyped for this and I've been a fan of the series since the original PSX game came out. Much of my enthusiasm for new MGS games ended after 4. Would rather see news on a new ZOE.

Posted by: Phantom_R32 Dec 10 2012, 09:52 PM
I'm the same way to an extent. I wish it would've ended at 4. Or at least started a new series with a new character that takes place after 4. But I'm curious to see what Kojima does with this.

Posted by: APX Dec 10 2012, 10:07 PM
Haven't played a MGS game since 2, but happy 20-25 years MGS and Kojima. smile.gif

Posted by: AsakuraZ Dec 11 2012, 03:15 AM
I would say I'm definitely more excited for MGS: Ground Zeroes, compared to this.

I'll keep an eye out on this game though, especially as they shine some more light onto what this game is going to be about.

"V has come to you..." all the detail show to MGS... Kojima playing mind game with us...

Posted by: RalliKai Dec 11 2012, 07:44 AM
Kojima definitely loves to troll and tease his audience, that much hasn't changed. The thing I would really like to see or have wanted to see has been a remaking of the first two MG games. MG2 told such a sophisticated story and was well ahead of its time for 1990. It would be great to see an adaption of it on the current consoles.

Posted by: pingu86 Dec 11 2012, 07:51 AM
The thing is Kojima will not do it... reason he does not want to spoil the game play. The first time I saw shadow moss in HD, I was WOW... he shoud make a remake.

? Most fans I know say that MGS covered both of the original official games' story and brought it into the world of 3d.

Called it! Well.. Not exactly. I didn't expect it to be both The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes.

But that voice actor though.. That's no David Hayter. ermm2.gif

No David Hayter... "Snake respond... SNAKEEEEEEEE..." Maybe he will voice the younger Solid Snake...

If they ever remake the original MG titles which would be awesome in my opinion.

I'm disappointed by this news but would understand if it's due to Big Bosses age since it looks to be set in around the mid-80s. They got Richard Doyle to voice Big Boss before so they might do it again.

Posted by: Lupin_III Mar 28 2013, 01:25 PM
I wish Kojima would just take my money and stop teasing me :/

Posted by: pingu86 Mar 28 2013, 07:05 PM
I think there a twist why David Hayter not voicing for Big Boss, we will hear husky voice in younger snake... Remember guys... "two phantom were born..."

UGH DANG IT. David Hayter's voice would have fit Big Boss so well! Sutherland will be a good alternative I guess... I'm looking forward to hearing more information as time goes on. Now if only I can get tickets to go to E3 then my life would be complete.

Posted by: Tessou Jun 11 2013, 04:35 AM
Praytell why? MGS 2 started the trend of MGS plots being completely idiotic and overly complex. Sure MGS itself had a corny plot, but MGS 2 took it to overdrive. I never played 3 but saw plenty of it, and wasn't impressed with the story. I had 4 and was disgusted enough to turn it off for good after the first chapter.

If they can give me a MGS with a solid (no pun intended) plot and not too many stupid unrealistic characters, considering the next one looks to be highly realistic, I might take a closer look, but I'm not really looking at it with any sort of hope. It's MGS. I skipped it over and nothing terrible happened to me.

Posted by: RalliKai Jun 11 2013, 01:49 PM
I've never had many issues with the characters, with the exception of MGS2 with the bloated plot and Raiden: MGS4 with the over -the-top acting and preachy anti-war message. The original MGS and MGS3 struck a good balance between story and gameplay, and brought a cast of reasonably good characters.

Not sure what you mean by unrealistic, whether it's their personality or abilities (Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven).

New extended trailer.

Oh, I was hoping they'd package it with the release of Phantom Pain like they did with Peacewalker and the HD release of Metal Gear Solid 1-3.

Posted by: Phantom_R32 Mar 7 2015, 06:28 PM
There's a chance they could package it with the game as some kind of pre-order bonus or something. Or at least give a code to download it from the store.

Really on the fence about getting that. Since I don't buy games very often anymore what with the finances being restructured, I figure one big game purchase is in the works.

I seen that package price for that thing is $499 which is overkill IMO, doesnt even come witha PS4.

Die hard fans will buy it though.

Posted by: Tessou Mar 10 2015, 09:42 AM
Considering it's the first mainline MGS title in a long time, and probably will be the only one for a similar amount of time, I'd say that any price is worth it.

Damn, for real? I thought it came with a PS4 just based on the looks of it and that they have a custom PS4 in a MGS V scheme.

None of the retail editions of MGS V come with a console. The Premium/Collector's edition comes with a huge amount of shit, though, so I'm not complaining.

All copies have a data transfer option for Ground Zeroes to add some extra Mother Base staff and Snake's outfit from that game.

MSRP:
Basic retail and Day One - $60 (XB1/PS4) $50 (X360/PS3)
Collector's Edition - $100

In Japan:
Basic and Digital Download - 8,400 yen
Special Edition - 9,980 yen
Premium - 29,800 yen

Not $400. w00t2.gif

It'd be sweet if they release the http://www.vg247.com/2015/03/04/metal-gear-solid-5-the-phantom-pain-limited-edition-ps4-releasing-in-asia/ here or even a normal bundle with the console like what was done for MGS 4 (I bought that bundle and kept that PS3 until I sold it to get the slim).

Posted by: Phantom_R32 Mar 12 2015, 04:43 PM
There's really no point in waiting for that MGS5 PS4 to release overseas. You can just change the language option to English. And, assuming the account system is region free again, you can make a North American PSN account.

Wish I would've seen that it was up for preorder already. Looks like it's not available on most sites.

Also, if anyone hasn't snagged the MGS Legacy Collection yet, they restocked it on Amazon. I thought it was a pretty solid collection worth the $50 I paid at the time. Includes pretty much everything you need to know about the story. Well... Besides Portable Ops. Also comes with a nice art book.

News: It seems like Konami has removed references to Kojima on Metal Gear Solid V and redirected Kojima Productions stuff back to Konami. Apparently rumours are speculating that Kojima has left Konami.

Posted by: Tessou Mar 19 2015, 01:02 PM
He hasn't left. His company's contract with Konami ends in December and it sounds like he's not renewing it due to some structural changes within Konami that keep him out of the high level stuff.

You would think they would treat him better. MGS is probably Konami's biggest money maker.

I wonder what will happen to Silent Hills if (when) he leaves.

Yeah, that news has apparently come out since from an anonymous Konami insider that Kojima and some other people in his team have expiring contracts at the end of the year that they most likely will not renew...

On the bright side I hope this leads to Kojima either going into film (besides a cameos in Ryuhei Kitamura films) or making new games, especially if they're something along the lines of a current generation version of Policenauts or Snatcher.

Posted by: Tessou Mar 19 2015, 10:32 PM
A new take on Snatcher would be phenomenal. That was such a great game.

I kind of hope he keeps working on Silent Hills, just with a different name. The preview was more than enough to convince me that knows what he's doing in the genre.

Posted by: APX Jun 22 2015, 12:41 PM
Any full detail on those as to why it's small? But then again, it's a 'demo' so maybe it just wants to give you a good time, instead of "shit, I gotta hide here for a few minutes before I move a few more feet!"

Need to watch the gameplay from E3, missing a few reads of the week of this, since everything I see is "omg ffvii remake! GG!"

Don't really expect GTA levels of large.

Did EA buy up all the license names for guns or something? I'm confused by all the alternate gun designations. It's worse than Syphon Filter.

Gameinformer has redirected the article about their hands-on time with the game to a more recent page about "5 tips for survival in MGS V" for some reason. I don't see a redaction notice anywhere.

The gist of the size of the world they gave was that it's open enough to mess around in, but not so much that you would get lost or have nothing to do.

The opener is more than enough to sell the game as a magnum opus for Kojima. Holy shit.

Afghanistan's first missions are a great veiled tutorial. Everything feels like it's been fine tuned to be "fair" for the player, even on higher difficulties. Enemies act realistically and even pull stunts and special maneuvers of their own to fuck with you if they get the notion that there is an intruder. Protip: use your fucking binoculars. Lack of intel means you are going to die very quickly in most cases, as the enemy has all sorts of crazy ways of catching you by surprise.

Also, be sure to disable enemy walkie talkies as much as possible. If you're going non-stealth for any reason, get rid of communications as a priority so you don't face their biggest, baddest support abilities. You don't want to meet them.

So far I haven't run into any graphical/framerate issues, aside from a bit of pop-in. It looks fantastic everywhere you go. Kojima was nice enough to actually get the Arabic signs and graffiti to read correctly (linguist bonus: translations are legit, too). The writing is mostly in Modern Standard, but some Pashto is in there as well. The soldiers are Russian, though, so I couldn't get any Arabic dialog to check yet. I haven't been in the game long enough to meet up with any natives, if there are any.

So far I'm blown away. Very much worth the wait.

PROTIPS:

- Destroy satellite pods when you find them (they look like large shipping crates with a big revolving dish on top). They are crucial to enemy air defense measures. Destroying them will create a new helicopter LZ nearby. You can destroy them easily by flinging a single grenade at the dish.

- Invest in everything as soon as you can. Developing weapons and gear means you can be on the cutting edge ASAP, and since you can call for supply drops in the field at any time, there is no excuse for being behind the curve. GMP is easily regained so don't sweat spending hundreds of thousands of GMP on developing a single item when an uncut diamond will instantly negate the expenditure.

- Interrogate troops always. Unless they're dead, they have secrets to tell. If they're not spilling troop locations, they can tell you where they stashed weapons or resources. Press them for info more than once, because sometimes they don't tell the whole story in one sitting. Higher ranked troopers will usually have better info to spill.

Damnit, lucky bastards, but then again i'd probably do bad, last MGS game I played was MGS 2. sad.gif (Not including ground zeros)

Posted by: Tessou Sep 1 2015, 11:51 AM
I was a fool and didn't play MGS3 until way late. I played through it in the HD Collection after ripping through Ground Zeroes and feeling the hype of another Kojima game waiting in the wings.

V feels to me like what 3 would be if it was on a more powerful system that could negate loading screens. It's a fantastic title that will take time to fully understand due to Kojima's writing.

Syphon Filter did something similar like Desert Eagle being the Falcon or the AK being called PK-102. Still an odd setup since every previous MGS game used licensed weapons.

Also, the servers are finally up, albeit shady as fuck and contribute to insane wait times even in single player while the game attempts to get updates from the servers. I spent five minutes waiting for it to finish communicating with the servers just so I could access the iDroid and call for a helicopter so I could play the goddamn game. Once in the ACC I switched to offline mode and never looked back.

The ability to transfer saves from Ground Zeroes is also working. Here is what you get.

GZ Sneaking Suit, Bionic Arm (Gold), Solid Snake PS1 costume. You only get the Snake costume if you got it in GZ.

Posted by: SgtXDNX Sep 5 2015, 03:56 PM
You also get a bunch of pretty decent staff members, including Kojima himself if you rescued him in GZ. Dude's R&D and Intel stats are wonderful for the start of the game. biggrin.gif

I just hope that all of the hardware I'm gathering (machine guns, mortars and AA guns) actually count for something later in the story as opposed to just being there to defend your station in online play. All in all, I felt I was left with more questions than answers but that's nothing new with Metal Gear. I gave up trying to understand the technical progression in the timeline, ie going from a robotic looking Rex to advanced artificial muscles in the course of 2 years. Going from MG Sahalanthropus to what looks like a trash compactor on legs 11 years later is even more amusing. I would now love to see Metal Gear get a remake as unlikely as that is.

Cold Horizon developers was about to do it EVEN with David Hayter as the voice of Solid Snake but it was taken down by Konami. If Konami gave at least a several million dollars with an extra year for TPP, it would be complete with ALL the loose ends tied and the FINALE of the Metal Gear Saga.

The theories about this game was just absurd but the one that was correct was an anonymous person on 4Chan that actually got it right unlike the Grey Fox theory or others. The twists were pleasing but you can't pull the same trick to the audience when they already know the trick.

In the game cassettes, The Hamburgers of Kazuhira Miller tapes actually had a good analogy of Kojima and us, the players, wanting something new from Metal Gear Solid. It tells that its hard to make up something new when you're already 28 years into it. Listen to Tape 3 and it would make some sense.

The deal on Steam is gone. You have to pre-order TPP on steam to get GZ for free.

Posted by: Tessou Sep 28 2015, 04:28 PM
The bonuses for playing GZ transfer via a save file to V. They do not expire. To get everything from GZ:

- Complete any mission (GZ sneak suit, gold bionic arm)
- Rescue all possible prisoners, including Hideo (adds high-stat staff members to Mother Base)
- Complete "Deja Vu" and correctly answer every question on normal (Solid Snake outfit) and hard (Cyborg Ninja outfit)

Deja Vu only becomes available in GZ upon finding all of the XOF patches hidden in the Ground Zeroes mission.

Posted by: APX Sep 28 2015, 06:10 PM
Great, now i'm gonna have to run it twice?, I do love me Cyborg Ninja though.

I wonder how hard the prisoners one is.

Posted by: Tessou Sep 28 2015, 06:52 PM
Not hard once you know where they are. There are a lot of them spread across a few missions. The bitch is the one that you have to hear about through eavesdropping on guards just to get him to spawn.

Also, capture the renegade threat targets instead of killing them. They're part of the package.

After going through TPP, I feel like playing through the series again. Original MSX games and all.

Have you guys been following the news about Hideo Kojima and Konami?

For those of you that haven't, Ill try to keep it short pretty much at the tail end of the development of Metal Gear Solid 5 there was a falling out between Kojima and Konami as a result of the high costs of making the game (and delays to complete the game) in comparison to Konami's mobile games which have been a huge success and made with a sub-$1 million budget.

The success of these mobile games has lead Konami to reconsider investing in the development of video games for home consoles which are expensive (although oddly enough they've said they're planning on continuing with Metal Gear and are hiring new staff).

Part of this falling out led to some really weird work conditions for Hideo Kojima's team, they were pretty much treated like http://kotaku.com/report-konami-is-treating-its-staff-like-prisoners-1721700073.

They also killed a new Silent Hills game that Kojima was working on with Guillermo del Toro and one of the actors I think from The Walking Dead.

Anyhow, the reason I bring this up is because in the last few days Metal Gear Solid 5 has won some awards, one set of which was at Sony's annual video game award show in Japan and another one that is based in North America called The Game Awards (it started last year).

In both cases Kojima was barred from attending either show to accept the award. At the U.S. show the host publicly mentioned that Kojima was told by a Konami lawyer that he was not permitted to go. Hearing stuff like this and the way they treated members of his team makes me shake my head and make me dislike Konami more and more.

On the bright side Kojima's contract is ending this month so hopefully he can either go independent or join another studio. The guy has made some pretty amazing games not called Metal Gear (Zone of the Enders, Snatcher, Policenauts) so it'll be awesome to see what he'll do next since he doesn't have the rights to any of his work at Konami.

Been following this aswell. Konami decided to shift in this direction even before MGS4 came out.

It would be cool to see some new content from Kojima and I hope he continues to make games. Still, it's alittle depressing to know that another ZOE or Silent Hill title will never see the light of day due to Konami's new business practice of "Burn all the bridges." Awhile back, they shot down a fan-made project to remake Metal Gear. dry.gif

Personally, I would love to see Kojima get back together with Del Toro and as many members of Team Silent and make a spiritual offshoot of Silent Hills.

Yeah, there was another couple of senior guys who worked at Konami who've left Konami in the past 2 years: Akari Uchida (creator of the popular Love Plus series), Koji Igarashi (famous for the Castlevania series), and Akira Sakuma (creator of the Momotaro Dentetsu games).

At least the dude who created Love Plus has come out to publicly state his disgust at Konami and the working conditions at that place.

Hopefully all these guys who've left will end up becoming more successful now that they've left Konami.

Posted by: xiao Dec 4 2015, 03:29 PM
Don't forget about Treasure too, sure they haven't made a decent game in years, but they were the pioneers of giving Konami the boot early on for being the video game equivalent of the Nazi party. They made Ikaruga, the greatest STG in shmup'story, then Konami came back on their knees begging them to make Gradius V; hah! G.Rev also left Taito to create their own studio, but I've not heard of any horror stories about Taito like Konami. IGA~sensei's working on a Castlevania successor called Bloodlust or something like that... it looks quite promising; like a blend between Symphony of the Night and a Vanillaware game. We're in an era where indy, kickstarters, and home studios are efficient & mobile enough to create a masterpiece. Last one I especially liked was Hawken, made under a 1 million dollar budget by some indy studio in Cali if I recall correctly. happy.gif

Well yeah, but that's just a fan project, it's almost guaranteed that the trademark owner would come down on it and get it closed, despite the project getting approval from Kojima.

For me, I am surprised that Konami never got Kojima's team to re-make it or to outsource it.

Because it wouldn't be profitable to them. Give me a difficult question next time. tongue.gif

Maybe it would be, then again it's not like Metal Gear 1 was what got the series popular in the West, that would be Metal Gear Solid 1.

Btw, now that I am thinking about it, is the remake you mentioned above, was it the Metal Gear Solid 1? I remember there being a fan who re-made some parts of Metal Gear Solid 1 and had to shut it down.

How's the MGSV disk hunting going tess? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tessou Dec 5 2015, 12:19 AM
As far as I can tell, it doesn't exist. I had two physical copies from the collector's edition, as it came with a standard copy as well as a steelbook that just contained the bonus disk. I sold the standard a while back, which happened to have the one game disk that I had.

I've always played the game digitally, so I didn't realize that I was selling the only playable physical copy when I had two game boxes...

Metal Gear 2 was well ahead of the curve in story depth for 1990 and definitely more challenging than MG. One of the pleasant surprises I got when I played it for the first time. Granted, I cut Metal Gear some slack because it was the first installment.

From what I saw in the TPP mission 51 video, it reminded me of MGS3 but on steroids with the jungle terrain. I'd imagine some of the traps would have been trickier to spot too.

PM me with a game wish list for XMAS. I will send you something as an apology for this, as I'm seriously pissed at myself for selling the disk.

That was fast. Looking forward to what comes of this. I'm glad he won't be locked into MGS anymore as ZOE was really fantastic too. I'd love see more of his ideas that he couldn't explore now that he's not locked into making MGS games all the time.

Posted by: BOZZ Dec 16 2015, 07:35 PM
I guess he's finally free of Metal Gear after 30 years... To be honest I am surprised he didn't go indie way before all the problems with Konami that happened over this past year.

What's cool about the new logo is how much fan art it's spawned and the studio is already selling merchandise with the new logo on it.

Does anybody even play MGSV anymore? I feel like it fizzled into obscurity pretty quickly.

Posted by: SgtXDNX Dec 27 2015, 05:31 PM
It's a lot like Snake Eater for me, where I'll pick at it occasionally when I'm in the mood for some stealth shenanigans, but I haven't done that recently because it's currently the season of everything ever coming out. Once new releases dry up again, I'll be back into it like the US in the Middle East. biggrin.gif

If you think this is burying the series then wait until they go full pachinko. biggrin.gif

Btw anyone else listen to the recent Game Informer podcast focusing on the cast of Metal Gear Solid 1? It was a pretty cool retrospective on the whole process that led to the development of the English voice work on the first game.

It also had a part, towards the end of the episode, where David Hayter reflects on the stuff with MGS 5. He mentions how he only found out they were replacing him as Big Boss when he happened to run into a producer from the series and had lunch with them; which was later confirmed in full by
the MGS casting director (she's also in the podcast too!). That's not the only thing, Kojima wanted to replace him going back to MGS3 and how he had to re-audition for the role pretty much since MGS3.

The thing I find to be a little weird is how people are complaining that Hayter is being salty about the fallout of him not being rehired for the role, yet the Japanese voice actor voiced Solid, Naked and Venom Snake throughout the entire franchise.

Hayter's narmy fucking voice should have never been behind Snake. That's how I see it. It's terrible when the scene calls for any sort of emotion or range.

Err, narmy?

Who would you have rather had do the voice of snake from the get go?

Anybody with range. Hayter only had one voice.

You know, I didn't want to admit it, but it's true, he doesn't have any range.

I've listened to some of his other work (his Marvel voice work and anime English dub work) and he sounds pretty much the same in all his roles, I was expecting he'd at least have a better range. It would've been nice to have Hayter voice Snake one last time, but I guess Peacewalker is his swan song.

I do wonder why Kojima went with Kiefer Sutherland, I'm guessing he must've liked 24 or he has a thing for foreign-born Canadians lol?

Posted by: BOZZ May 10 2016, 07:45 PM
So looks like some minor, minor details about Kojima's next game have come out thanks to an interview he had recently with http://gematsu.com/2016/05/hideo-kojima-new-game-action-title-aaa-fans.

The MGS 5 is good in terms of graphics and combat mode. Nothing wrong with that. But the only thing that bothers me is that the side missions are aren't good. So basically, you get bored when you're not in the mood for story mode
