I dabbled for a while, and I can still pick it up and play a lot of the more standard stuff.

Big thing to learn if you want to be decent is bending notes. Also find some good tablature and just play and learn that way. The nice thing it's that it's an instrument that lends itself very well to just fucking around, and even decent quality harps are affordable, in the $30-40 range.

I had some software back in the day that would take MIDI files (LOL) and translate them to notes, you could transpose it to your key signature, but would have to manually translate that to the holes on the harp. Was super useful for basic learning. I never really got to the point of being able to improvise too much.

Oh, and learn to play Piano Man. EVERYONE who finds out you play harp will ask you to play it.

@Spaz sorry but my knowledge in reading music and chords notes, tabs are very limited.

is there a difference between blues harp and a marine band? which is what i have. a MB. i have read that MB is easier to play and sounds more acoustic then the blues harp.

which i don't know the difference since i only have this 1 harmonica. I am considering buying other keys or different types of harmonicas in the near future as i do love playing this instrument its so much fun and its kind of easy to learn then the guitar. That i was messing around with before.

The notes are the easy part, the instruments are what take practice.

A blues harp is more modular, reed plates are replaceable, they can be fully disassembled and cleaned, and they have a wood comb, which has both advantages and disadvantages. They will bend easier, but will be more maintenance-intensive at the same time. Wood combs need a certain level of care, and besides, in being wood, are less complex, so you need to be more articulate in how you play it to get the sound you want, and the holes are smaller too. But it's traditional at the same time and has that classic sound to it.

A MB will sound brighter and peppier, if you will. Combs are generally plastic, and they're pretty much maintenance free (most are riveted). The comb also won't swell so the sound won't change. You're still better off not going with a cheap one, as they tend to not bend as well, which is actually the reason I ended up with my harp to begin with. Cheaper ones also tend to leak so you won't get a full crisp note.

Moral of the story, try both and see what you like, nobody can make that decision but you.

This thread in addition to my dad getting one from his sister for Christmas has reignited my interest in learning harmonica. I have a Jambone key of C I got for a few bucks a while back just to fuck with when I was bored or go camping. I've only messed around and haven't done any real practicing since I got it.
