Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Initial D Torrents > How to use BitTorrent correctly

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Aug 26 2004, 12:39 PM
Since we have a successful Bit Torrent Section here at IDWF I thought it was time to make a guide to show everyone how to use Bit Torrent Properly. Some of you have complained that there isnt enough seeds or your download isnt fast enough. That isnt neccessarily true. There is enough seeds and your download should be going faster but you havent configured everything correctly yet. The problem lies in your router. For those of you who use "switches" or "hubs" wont have any problems. For those of you who have a router, you people need to open your ports for Bit Torrent.

How to Open Ports

1) Type in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar on your internet browser.

2) To access that page you need a name and password. The name and password is in the manual for the router that you have purchased. For those of you that use that have the Linksys router, the name and password is both admin.

3) When you have access to the page click "Application & Gaming. For those of you who have older routers, you have to click "Advanced Setup" first. If you arent already there, click "Port Forwarding" or "Port Range Forwarding".

4) Now to open the ports type the following. Under "Applications" type "BT". Under "start" type 6881, under "end" type 6999. Under "Protocol " Make sure you have chosen both protocol types.

5) Now under IP address you must type in your IP address. For those of you that dont know it, Click Run... in the start menu. The type in "cmd" a window will then pop up. In that window type in "ipconfig" after you type that in it will tell you your IP Address.

6) After you put in everything on that page make sure you click enabled and after that just click "Save Settings"

Here is a picture for any of you who have trouble. This is the page that you open the ports on. Remember people, Each router is different and there is always some slight variations in each one. But just make sure you get to that page and type the correct things in. For any more help PM me.

EDIT:Make Sure you are using Bit Tornado or this guide wont work correctly. The ports that I have named are for the bit Tornado program. Not any of the other Bit Torrent Clients ports

Nice guide, but dont assume everyone is using a linksy's router

Edit: Also you only need to open ports 6881 - 6889

Posted by: Horiyoshi Aug 26 2004, 12:57 PM
If I remember correctly, not all routers use 192.168.1.1

Posted by: rageguy Aug 26 2004, 12:59 PM
in bittornado, the default ports are randomized, it is under the pref button.
they use 10000 to 30000 i think and its randomized so i think 6881-6889 isnt for everyone

if that is the case, u have to enable upnp. universal plug and play
go to your add/remove programs in control panel, click on windows component. go to networking and check the box where it says universal plug and play. click ok.
then go to your router and find where UPnP is. for linksys, its under the password tab. then restart your computer.

then in bitornado, go to pref and make sure upnp setting is at "fast (1)"

once both steps are done, bit tornado will have a green light.

Posted by: blazin_drift Aug 26 2004, 01:01 PM
You can always uncheck randomize ports.

Posted by: rageguy Aug 26 2004, 01:02 PM
the reason why u wanna randomize is that a few isp are beginning to throttle down the speeds on the ports bt uses. i have heard from some users that ports 6881-6900 is throttled down, while the other ports remain fine. therefore it is a good idea to use randomize

Posted by: Gabriel Aug 26 2004, 01:43 PM
If you're not using a Lynksis router go here http://www.xbchelp.com/router/
Find your router and it will tell you need to type into the URL bar because not all routers use 192.168.1.1
For example DLink routers use 192.168.0.1

Also Takumi, step 3 is just for your router. On my Lynksis I have to click, Advanced Setup, Forwarding, View Port Range Forwarding, and then type in the ports.
If anyone is still having trouble just give me an IM or PM, i'm sure I can help you.

Posted by: BiBi Aug 26 2004, 02:16 PM
nice guide.

I usually just enable DMZ mode on the router for one of my computers for BT or hosting online games.

That is incorrect. Also it depends on what Bit Torrent Program you are using. The ports I listed are fro Bit Tornado.

Posted by: rageguy Aug 26 2004, 03:06 PM
actually u dont have to setup port forwarding manually
use upnp and it will work fine and bittornado will give u a green light

hey all,

is there any recommendation for one of the better bittorrent client you all used?
seems like i'm missing out something somewhere.... sad.gif

or a list of recommended bittorrent software i.e. in terms of stability & speed?

thx.. happy.gif

Bit Tornado. Easy enough.

Posted by: spinnee Aug 26 2004, 05:58 PM
I've dled that last nite, it installed correctly but it doesn't run. pinch2.gif
is it because i have the official bittorrent in my comp that's why it can't run? sad.gif

thx for the advice anyway... w00t2.gif

Use Bit Tornado. Just get it. Its the best and easiest to use.

When you click on a torrent does it open in the original BitTorrent instead of Bit Tornado? If so then you should probably un-install the original BitTorrent.

ya.. guess i will after i've finish dling the extra stage first.....! shifty2.gif

well, since bittorrent supports ports 6881-6999 I guess that leaves you with 99 ports? That'll allow you 99 downloads at once, way more than enough right?

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Aug 26 2004, 06:55 PM
Yes it is more then enough but still keep them all open. It helps.

Well I like it because you can set your UL and DL rate, you have more controle than the official BT. No one uses the Official BT. If you don't like BitTornado you can try other programs like Azuras and ABC.

okay here's another tip for you DSL users. Often times, DSL modems (like 2wire homeportal when using SBC) have a built in router and firewall. find out how to access the modem (for the 2wire its http://homeportal/) and set up the firewall to allow those port ranges even if you have a linksys router hooked up after it. i did this on my girlfriends network and her bt speeds went through the roof, and the firewall light turned completely off. good luck.

just wondering , i went to https://go2id.net and checked on status of one of the torrent...

2 seeders, 14 leechers..

those 14 leechers if they allow uploading on their comp, are they considered as seeder status concurrently?

if not, den this is a crazy thing! 2 seeders to leech 14 bloodsuckers! faint! mad.gif

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Aug 29 2004, 09:08 PM
Thats impossible that you only saw 2 seeds. I am seeding at least 5 torents 24/7. You must have read wrong. But ya there is always more leechers unfortunatly. Not many seeds lately.

Edit: Sorry I thought you meant seeders in all. Your right only 2 seeds. One of them is me. More people need to help seed. Not just leech.

They are not considered seeders because they don't have a full copy of the file. They can still up load what parts of the file they have though.

Oh and Takumi, he's talking about "Initial D Extra Stage (dvd-rip)"

BitTornado is good and all for limiting uploads and such, but I need to find an earlier version (3.3 or something). The bug that makes it eat up memory still hasn't been fixed yet.

Posted by: spinnee Oct 21 2004, 06:54 PM
i also have a problem recently.

I've been dl-ing ep7-8 (chinese sub) yesterday, not sure if because i've set the bittornado wrongly, after 1/2 hour or so, my comp will reset on it own. sad.gif
to think i've left my comp the whole night and i've download just 1/2 hour worth of stuff.

Takumi Trueno: Can you advise ?? I didn't touch any settings except to switch to dsl fast, 100 max kibs for upload and 30 uploads. port settings 1000-65535.
will this reset the comp? or there may be a possibility of bad ram??? thnks.. happy.gif

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Oct 21 2004, 07:01 PM
Well, If your computer keeps restarting, that can be caused from a virus. Its happened to me before. Bit Tornado never causes a computer to restart. It doesnt have any bugs like that. If you have enough Ramn to watch videos on the computer then its not from not enough Ram. Im not too sure about your problem.

it only happens when i start BitTornardo. There was a situation I've met before by setting the ports wrongly, and my comp keep resetting.

in any case, THANKS! laugh.gif

I have tried the methods mentioned in the above posts regarding port forwarding and Upnp. However, I still unable to get higher speed when dling the initial D first stage even though there are only roughly 2 seeds ard... my speed always cap at 3kb/s..
Is there some more steps to take to increase the speed or is this just a normal speed for bittornado?

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Nov 3 2004, 03:49 PM
It says on Bit Tornado, "Tip: your download rate is proportional to your upload rate". meaning the faster you upload, the faster you download.

Well look at the Speeds for first stage.
http://www.bt.go2id.net/
Ep. 1-4 is at 8.04 KB/sec with 4 peers DL it, so your speed is not going to be fast.

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Nov 16 2004, 12:00 AM
It all depends on your connection, Bit Torrent Program, you router and if the ports are open. Not having the ports open can drastically change your spped.

Posted by: lil_firzen Nov 16 2004, 12:35 AM
i had my ports opened to 6881 and 6999, with randomize not selected...dont know if thats right...

i use cable, the 512 speed or something like that...and i use bittornado

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Nov 16 2004, 05:04 PM
Well for defaulit, randomize is selected. That is what I use. I am also on Cable(Comcast), and I can get speeds of around 300+kb/s.

Posted by: xupux Dec 15 2004, 02:41 PM
admin for name and pword dont work for me are u talkin about people on the router or with the other thing that connects to it and is diff room?

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Dec 15 2004, 03:55 PM
You must know the difference between a router and a switch/hub. If you are on a switch/hub then you dont have to worry about this. People who are on Cable connections must have a router. While a DSL connection you can have a router or a switch/hub.

Posted by: xupux Dec 18 2004, 09:37 PM
well my other computer has the cable connection and this one is ran off ot it with same internet so dont gotta pay for internetr twice thats what i mean

Posted by: Taiki Dec 19 2004, 06:25 AM
whenever i try to download something is says...

'ERROR (time)
Problem Connecting to Tracker - < urlopen error (10060, 'operation timed out')>

i have opened ports for bitTornado from 6881-6890, also even change the port in the torrent prefs; from 6881 to 6900. so what acould be the problem?

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Dec 19 2004, 11:53 AM
in the torrent prefs, it supposed to be from 6881-6999(randomized). Change ports to be opened from 6881-6999.

Posted by: DrEVOIII Dec 19 2004, 11:59 AM
To know if your ports are correctly opened and everything is working fine. The light on the top right corner of BITTORNADO is green. If its yellow then you are not getting the full potential of speed that you can be getting. As for me I opened the ports 6881-6999 and it didnt help a long time ago. Then just a few months ago I opened the ports from 5000-7000 and now it goes literally 5x faster than normal.
I used to go around 30kbs with 6881-6999. But now with 5000-7000 going around 80kbs - 140kbs is normal.

so what ports should i open in firewall internet connections and what the port range for my bittorrent?

Since when does routers needed to have ports opened one by one? I have never heard of such a thing. Or unless your router is shit. First goto your router settings and you should find an option called "Port Forwarding" or someting similar to that. Then under "Port Forwarding" you can add port RANGES not individuals. Why dont you take a screenshot for us to see what you are dealing with. I want to see why you are adding individual ports. [To take screenshot: Press "Print Screen" on your keyboard and paste it onto paint and save it.]

i only have one com that uses the net, im not sharing. i recently read a guide which just told me to go to the firewall settings, open the ports for bittorrent and make it an exception. by doing so i increased my speed from 1kb/s to 30kb/s, yet with other clients (irc) i could reach up to 60kb/s which is why im asking what the d/l speed for a 512 should be.

im just asking what sort of settings should i use for bittorrent and a faster way to open ports using the method the guide provide. since you says you opened 5000-7000... thats seems alot to open to me using the method i currently been informed.

Mang, from the looks of it you are using Window's Firewall Configs. Dont you have a router that you can access? I have a NetGear Wi-Fi Router and you have a special address to it. In order to access your rounter (assuming that you have one) type in the address bar 192.168.0.0 OR 192.168.0.1 OR 192.163.0.2 As of what I know, there are three different address of all the routers out there. So only one of them may work for your router.

After accessing your router, goto "PORT FORWARDING" or something like that.

Here Ill show you how I did MY configs and maybe you could somehow follow along on yours.

First type in 192.168.0.0 OR 192.168.0.1 OR 192.163.0.2

... I think its impossible that you dont have a router when you have DSL connection. There is no other way that you can have a DSL connection without a network. You need a network to share your connection with your computer and others. Unless you are using a hub. Anyways, if you strongly believe that you dont have a router then wtf are you waiting for? Of course, go call your ISP.

So how is it? Is it working properly? (i.e. some downloads go averagely from 20kbs - 100kbs) Give me some feedback, because I may use the same settings for my other friends. And what ports did you decide to use?

Do like the rest did, make screenshots of your router and post them here so I can see. (Make sure that you "black out" things that you dont want us to see, like your IP address, username, the ******* in the password, etc.) I better get DPs for this. laugh.gif whistling.gif pinch2.gif

If ur using a network connection, its easier to know ur IP. Just right click on Local Area connection and goto Status
Goto Support and u see your IP

i only have one com that uses the net, im not sharing. i recently read a guide which just told me to go to the firewall settings, open the ports for bittorrent and make it an exception. by doing so i increased my speed from 1kb/s to 30kb/s, yet with other clients (irc) i could reach up to 60kb/s which is why im asking what the d/l speed for a 512 should be.

im just asking what sort of settings should i use for bittorrent and a faster way to open ports using the method the guide provide. since you says you opened 5000-7000... thats seems alot to open to me using the method i currently been informed.

OMG (oh my god) how much is Firewall Blocking?

Go look at my posts and youll know. I didnt answer your question directly but there are hints throughout the way. It all depends. Its not a definite speed. If you have dsl/cable it AVERAGES from 30kbs - 120kbs. Sometimes torrents even go as low as 10kbs - 20kbs for me. It really all depends. But normal speed for a "hot" torrent is 30kbs - 120kbs.

Yours has been the weirdest to solve. If this doesnt solve your problem then tell me. I think its your trigger for the BT client. I actually think that you dont need to add anything under applications. Its just your firewall that is killing your connection with BT. You know the drill, if your torrent doesnt show a green light at the top right hand corner (assuming that you are using BitTornado) and at least 1/4 of your downloads dont go at least a bit faster than usual then tell me.

... Thats not gonna help. Go do your homework on you D-Link router and comeback after you know how to at least get access to it.

For those who wonder:
Many people ask why the ports 3000-7000? Why? I think that BT uses the Ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999. Thats why some people who forward their ports from 6881 - 6999 and still have slow download problems. Well, the ports 3000 - 7000 completely covers the port ranges for BT. Why is 3724 and 6112 included. I think, since the new version of BitTorrent came out, they expanded the ports. At first it was 6881 - 6889. Then later it became 6881 - 6999. And who knows now? 3724 and 6112 came from Blizzard. Some of you may recognize 6112, as the use of B.Net. Blizzard, (for those who have experienced the patch downloader for World of Warcraft) now uses BitTorrent to help distribute their patch faster than using up their bandwidth to send it to you through FTP So they use the ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999. Thus I came to the conclusion of using 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999 as BT ports becuase Blizzard uses them for THEIR Bittorrent client. And hey, it works right? Logical?

Make sure that your IP is also added to the service. Or you are behind a Friewall apart from your router like programs such as Zone Alarm. For Zone Alarm, you will also have to add your IP that your computer is using too.

*And if your router is crappier than the other then why dont you just switch back? blink.gif laugh.gif
And go use BitTornado. Im only use to BitTornado, and not that familiar with BitComet if you want any further help.

Nah I'm not using ZOne Alarm and I added my IP as well. Did all the things I did for normal port forwarding.

Port forwarding did increase my speed.....from 5kbps to a very stable 50kbps on my 512/128 DSL connection. So actually I have no major problems on BT. smile.gif

I just thought by trying the Blizzard settings u gave, will speed it up a bit more. But strangely, the difference for me is not much, in fact it's pretty much the same.

I was just wondering if anyone else tried this and had a significant speed increase from their setting of 6881 to 6999? smile.gif

What "I" do to take a screenshot is hit " print screen" and then paste it into photoshop, but you can use Paint as well.

If you're having a lot of trouble with port forwarding, ever try ABC? I find it much easier to use and haven't had a single problem with it.

They must be opening on the ports that are open on your router and somtimes it doesn't, (If you know what i mean).

Anyway admins add this program as it's the best program to get your ip's ect http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2N4W8RDJKMMIY2IZX7SZCPOFWJ
It has your Lan, Wan ip's.

When forwarding your ports pick 50000 and over. i use 55899 55903 even know i only d/l 1 file at a time. when port forwarding in your router add both your Ip's from your Lan and Wan to make things safe (witch you get from that program i posted)
Also enabling DMZ can help somtimes (were it say's Ip put your Wan ip)

*edit* just went through BitComet site & found XP sp2 patch to open Max TCP/IP connects... that helped alot. *edit*

as in extend the range higher? up to 55000? In Bit Comet, I see where u can chg the listening port to anything you want, but not a whole range of ports that it uses. I can try a higher listening port. I dont wanna go too high, because my Soulseek, XBConnect & other programs are getting in the way of my port ranges. they are taking ports too....

Bittorrent is different then a direct p2p program like limewire. Hince the reason you get good speeds in limewire then bittorent. You normally d/l from people on how many ports you got open in your router/modem, so if you have say 8 ports open, you'll d/l it from 8 people.

Number 2 in a no, as the file size has to be the same as it is in the torrent file. Best bet is make a new torrent and seed with your files.

can some tell wat to do for a netgear router to speed up my downloading

Port forward the ports that your torrent client is using OR if your torrent client supports UPnP and so does your router enable "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client", "Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)", & RIP Listerner (If only your router is using RIP v1. UPnP will automatically port forward the port used by your bittorrent client, which makes it easier that opening all ports & some of them aren't being used. Like BitTornado, its default ports are from 10000 to 30000 i think.. if you open them all, most of them wont used. So yah, go with the UPnP setup.

Edit: Oh by the way, you can see the Optional Networking Components, when you open Network Connections then click on Advanced in the menubar and select Optional Networking Components.

hi!
i'm using azureus.

so is bit tornado better?

i'm downloding the latest episodes but it is so slow.my ports are open and everything.i haven't changed anything but the download speed becomes slower and slower.is it because i don't seed enough?i wait till the file was 100% shared.

Posted by: aftermath Dec 24 2005, 12:48 PM
If you're getting 3-5KBps though you correctly port forwarded/upnp your ports, then its coz noone is seeding a complete file at the moment or there is a low amount of seed/peers.

thanks.
i don't think this has something to do with the seeders.there are thousands of them.a few weeks ago i downloaded a video with 100kb/s.i haven't change anything since then.for the other files it was easily 40-50kb/s and i was happy with that.but it suddenly the download speed got slower.

i was on the azureus homepage and they said that the 6881 port (which i use)isn't a good one.so i changed the port.i was downloading a video and with the old 6881 port.i had 70kb/s for a short time but then got below 10kb/s.with the new port(downloading the same video) it's pretty stable at 20kb/s.not more.

i have a green smiley(with the old 6881 port i also had a green smiley).
but then there was an error message saying that i should open the UDP port(or something like that...my sister didn't pay much attention to it and closed the message dry.gif ,it sounds like it was me but i swear it wasn't me).

i looked at the my router configuration settings but i didn't found anything about UDP.

does it have something to do with the firwall?
i'm below n00b level and i seriously need help.
thanks in advance.

I suggest use the UPnP feature of your router for automatic port forwarding for bot TCP & UDP.

or just a bad port... like I might've said earlier, my ISP probably filters large ports or something since I get crap speeds if I use a high port, so I just go for 20 instead

Has portforwarding guides for really many types of routers, should be n00b-friendly too.

should i close the port that was open and then enable the UPnP feature?

Yes. Remove all manually port forwarded ports TCP or UDP, then enable UPnP in your router, also enable UPnP and Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client in Optional Networking Components in Windows XP.

I use Azureus and I just chose a random port I assumed wouldnt be in use.
So right now mine's set to like, 59999. And Ive got it labeled as Azureus in the Port Forwarding menu. TCP and UDP. Make sure the IP is correct. It took me a while on my computer because 'ipconfig' doesnt work for me. o_O

Well for a while Bit Tornado kept crashing so I went and tried out many different Bit Clients like Azureus, Bit Comet and maybe another. Each one being very slow.

Now that Bit Tornado is back working I am back to downloading around 500kb/s and more so if I am downloading more then one torrent. I love bit Tornado. it also allows me to seed at the best rate.

Are you using Windows Me or earlier by any chance? They have something called winipcfg

actually I'm not sure if Win Me had it, but 98 and earlier did for sure

Stupid question time from an old geezer...

I've installed a bit torrent program called Azureus on my machine using Windows XP. I'm getting 20 to 30 kB/s on the D and 30 to 40 kB/s on the U.
I can live with that for now....

My question is... is it faster or should I leave the window open on the webpage I got the link for the torrent from or is it okay to close the window and just leave the torrent window/program running.

Keep it simple please... I'm just an old Bunta trying to keep up with you kids.

once you have downloaded the .torrent file that you either right clicked and saved as and than double clicked to run in azerus or left clicked and azerus opened the torrent automatically, you absolutely do not need the torrent web page open to download anything. Just keep azerus open and make sure it is downloading.

Ok here's another thing you ought to know (XP SP2 users):

SP2 limits the half-open connections you have to 10 (they said it's to slow down viruses or w/e). That means when you use bittorent, you can only connect to 10 peers.

To correct that, you need to apply this patch

http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads

it is NOT a virus.

with this patch you can set your half-open connections to 50+. although you have to check once a month since XP SP2 tends to put it back to 10 through updates and stuff. The program tells you how many current half-open connections you have, just to make sure.

after doing that, you need to configure you bittorrent client and set the available number of half-open connections.

the following guide is for uTorrent but if you're an advanced user, you should be able to adjust equivalent settings for other clients.

1. Go to Options -> Preferences -> Advanced.

2. Scroll down until you see net.max_halfopen

3. Set the value to whatever you did in the patch (if you put 50, then put 50 in here as well)

Here's a screenshot

Hmm, sorry to bump a year old thread pinch2.gif

I have recently switched to Comcast Cable and the download speed is awesome and much faster than my old ISP (SBC/AT&T DSL). The problem is that when I download anime on Bit Tornado it is very slow and it's always under 80 kb/sec and the upload speed is always higher than the download speed.

I did a speedtest on Speakeasy.net and here are the results.

Download Speed: 8357 kbps (1044.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 728 kbps (91 KB/sec transfer rate)

I read the guide on portforward.com and read all the post on this thread like using 3000 to 7000 for port forward, but it didn't help.

I'm using a NETGEAR WGT624v3 Wireless Router, but I disabled the wireless and bought a CAT6 cable to make it wired.

Switch to Xunlei. It is the fastest program out there.
