Are the race locations such as Mt. Akina real? If so whereabouts are they located in japan?

EDIT BY NOMAKE WAN: Yes they are, and here's where to find lots of pics of the real-life locations!

http://gallery.tsukaeru.jp/

Posted by: RyousukeT. Mar 11 2003, 06:50 AM
yes they are real mountains and there are maps ill look to see i think i might have some pics or maps somewhere on my pc. but im sure others have em too biggrin.gif

Posted by: KenshinX Mar 11 2003, 10:18 AM
Well, on the Initial D World home page, there is a real life map of Akina if that counts.......

I would assume that most, if not all the race locations are real. After all, ID takes place in Gunma prefecture and the locations are based off from that. And the fact is that Gunma prefecture does indeed exist in Japan.

I've seen a pic of the actual Fujiwara Tofu shop before.

yeah, the mountain passes are real... mt. akina and c-121 i've seen pictures of...
i didn't manage to save it before... actually i was searching for the pictures again and that's how i ended up here in go2initiald laugh.gif

Posted by: ImprezaSTi27 Mar 11 2003, 11:05 AM
The animators went to the mountain passes and took pictures of key distinguishing locations and characteristics of each mountain pass so that they could put them in the anime.

Posted by: ZenkaiRacerEG Mar 11 2003, 08:15 PM
I see, thats cool. Do people actually gather and race at those locations?

Posted by: *Capsulesâ„¢* Mar 11 2003, 09:04 PM
I was wondering the samething. wink2.gif

Posted by: ZenkaiRacerEG Mar 12 2003, 12:52 AM
Ive been looking up stuff on the area and wonder if akina was renamed haruna? Also is haruna lake the lake that Itsuki falls into after the failed attempt to kiss Saori in the boat?

Posted by: *Capsulesâ„¢* Mar 12 2003, 12:25 PM
I think that is the same lake . . . hehe boats and all. laugh.gif

Akina = Haruna you say? I gotta do some research. happy.gif

haruna? u get that from a battle gear site?

Posted by: ZenkaiRacerEG Mar 12 2003, 10:58 PM
No, from maps. Akina is named Haruna on all the maps Ive seen.

Posted by: karasac Mar 12 2003, 11:02 PM
well then i have no idea

Posted by: Jayson Mar 13 2003, 11:12 PM
I would race there!

Posted by: ImprezaSTi27 Mar 14 2003, 01:26 AM
People race on these mountain passes all the time. The police are actually pretty lax about it, I guess there's some "understanding" that as long as the racers keep it to late nights when the roads aren't really used then it's okay and they won't harass.

Kick ass! If I get stationed in japan I will definetly make it there to race.

Im going into the Air Force. Definetly not a killer here. I would really like to get stationed at Yokota Air Base thats near Tokyo, but Im sure Ill probably go to Okinawa before Yokota though. Either way it would be cool since theres a racing scene in both places.

Young people brainwashed killers? The military is so sensitive about feelings now, I don't think so. dry.gif
Reasons to join the military, especialy the Air Force, is free edection and with the air force you get a free ride as really only ploits see danger. Do good on the Air force academics test and you got it made. Plus with from houseing you're dodgeing the bullet on Huge cost of liveing in Japan. Ths prices at the Base store are so loww...
Sorry, but I too am planing to join the air force. biggrin.gif

Just had a look at that site posted before with the race locations- the pic of C121 at Usui looks good

But doesnt it have that text at the start of each epsiode something about places being fictional?

I didnt think they places where real til i saw that site posted there

Posted by: karasac Mar 28 2003, 04:09 PM
that thing at the beggining probably says thatthe places r real but the characters r fictional and drifting is dangerous and wear ur seat belt and blah blah blah

Posted by: killerenergy Mar 28 2003, 08:48 PM
Yeah I agree don't be a jacka$$, trying to do that stuff, I would almost compare it to jacka$$ exept drifting serves a point.

Seems like the race course for mt. myogi in the initial d arcade game was taken from here. Just remember the curves in the game, and you'll see they are exactly the same as in the game.

Welcome to the boards. The arcade game is indeed very sweet, but version 2 is even better. Evos are pretty cool, though I like the FD and FC better in my opinion.

Right now, I'm stuck at Ryosuke in the arcade game, version 1 that is. Oh well, I'll beat him eventually.....

as a matter of a fact, the mountains and raceways are real. If you go to the locations in Japan. You're for certain to find them. They're exactly the same as in the game. Just wanted to let you know.

I dont see speed bumps either, i think that putting speed bumps on a mountain hairpin would actually be quite dangerous, especially if you were riding a motor bike.

well, if you look at the arrow and line marks on the road you can see it curve on the hump.

now that i think of it, they don't look too big for speed bumps, probably just mini 'humps' to warn of the hairpin ahead, which still looks like a hassle if you wanna drift round it

they're not so much speed bumps as a serious method of deterring drifting.
if i were dricing over those, it wouldn't be at 75 mph.

Posted by: Evolution Sep 23 2003, 06:32 PM
I think they dont want anybody racing or trying to drift. I bet some people there who had no clue about drifting and they saw ID and they decided to try it. They might be some accidents and stuff.

And the last one, just like the shot in 3rd stage (I think is the 3rd anyway).

I posted that a while ago, I was meaning to edit the post And put a grab from the divx I've got of the movie or which ever stage it was from, but I completly forgot about it until I was going through my favorites (only about 400 or so) and came across it again.

So here it is:

i dun think that the resturaunt and names are the same as in real life...i reckon that they just took some real buildings and added them in the anime...then putting different names...(except the courses)

Hi guys.. Iam new and just read through this thread... I've lived in Japan for 3 years and I first saw ID when it was out in Japan. Naturally after reading it some friends and I went to investigate the areas. Just to tell ppl who've been wondering iam not sure if its been cleared up yet or not but Akina is not Akina in real life its called Mt Haruna and i've never seen anyone gathering at these locations in real life. I remember Shigeno san writting something about calling it Akina for legal issues or something. But just to clear that up its Haruna. cool.gif

Those locations roads are WAY to small to have those kinda drift battles at night. Its been said ppl like go practice there now but there wasn't a big scene when I was there and that was just like last year when I finally returned to Canada.

I drove a car in japan but it was a crappy honda FF car so I didn't do any drifting but I did like going to those mountains at night to see the real kings of the street cool.gif

EDIT
as for the "Fujiwara Tofu shop" rest assured theres no 86 sitting at the side crying2.gif

Posted by: mujjuman Aug 25 2004, 08:20 PM
still as real as it gets smile.gif

thanks for the pics everyone cool.gif

Posted by: KeNgai_rcrSmaSh Aug 25 2004, 08:27 PM
That's crazy. I wouldnt think people would actually try to drift those mountains. I would of thought the roads would be all messed up. But it would be a cool thing to see. cool.gif

akina as a mountain road exists in japan but it is known as Haruna moutain...but it doesnt matter cuz its still the same

Posted by: xkhol Sep 8 2004, 12:20 PM
some of those courses look big enough to race on, but it would still be ridiculously dangerous....and shomaru really is in crappy condition

Posted by: ragingSPAM Sep 8 2004, 12:49 PM
i've seen some videos of people racing on akina(haruna) in real life...i was tense watching the video seeing them drift around the corners and stuff...i was like WOW!! are they crazy?!?!

Does anyone have or know where to find the video's of people racing down akina/Haruna (or any other ID related map). I've search everywhere for like a year but never found any. Thanks.

thewird

Posted by: Jsan? Sep 22 2004, 02:30 PM
There is no such thing... If you've ever been there you know its virtually impossible because the speedbumps and what not would rip up your tires.
And Initial D 83
If your going to steal pics/maps from Initial D Gallery stage for your own site atleast give credit to the original site by linking to the site. The guy who runs that site happens to be a friend of mine and he's sick of people ripping off his images and using it as their own. I told him he should put up a disclaimer in there in english so people wouldn't do that shit but he only put it in Japanese. I guess thats why the site says "SORRY THIS SITE IS JAPANESE ONLY"

Posted by: thewird Sep 22 2004, 02:37 PM
Actually I saw one of those video's already but the person who had them deleted them and doesn't remember where he got them since it was a long time ago.

And BTW I have an OLD video (in color still) of the drift king when he was younger drifting down a mountain in an AE86. I downloaded it off of edonkey2000 if you want it.

Posted by: Jsan? Sep 22 2004, 05:22 PM
Well he says why he called it that in the art book. Iam just too lazy to go find it now. But its something along those lines anyways. I dont like "AKINA" but thats cause i'vebeen to Japan and visited certian locations... If your in the town near Haruna you'd understand why its called that. But I GUESS akina does sound kinda cool.

Posted by: Akira Sep 29 2004, 05:57 PM
Look through those gelleries.. some of those roads look too public to race on, but, something I noticed, Happo seems like quiet the hot spot to race in! Look at those roads and look for tire marks, you can see apexing tire marks from racers, so, yeah, people race at these places. :] But, if you look at some, they have speed bumps, and certain little things that makes it dangerous to cross over the line, like mentioned earlier. Example.
Look at the hairpins in Akagi you'll see little thinsg on the yellow line, I know what they're really for, but really, could you drift over that? tongue.gif

Sideways is CORRECT this is my friends site gallery stage. He is usually going by the manga not anime but even though its pretty much the same.
The Romanji names are as follows.
Haruna(Akina), Akagi, Usui
Myougi,syomaru,Irohazaka

Project D
Momiji,Enna,Happogahara
S-Line, M-line,?-line (unknown name)
Tsuchisaka, F-line

There ya have it... As if even the noobest noob couldn't tell by the pics i guess.

PJD FD = Project D FD(3S) .. basically the new team is Project D, therefore no 'Red Suns' or other stickers are required .. Ryosuke prob feels that stickers or anything (distracting) like that would take away from the importance of the mission, u notice in episode 5 *SPOILERS* ryosuke's FC is brought in and he himself has removed all the stickers from his car too

the only stickers remaining would be the 'Project D' logo on the vans and the 'Fujiwara Tofu Shop' on the 86

this might have been covered already but, Akina is Hasuma (SP?) in real life... for whatever reason they changed the pass name in ID. You guys should check out Kaido Battle 2 on the PS2... pretty much has ALOT of the initial d passess.. even the course for emperor's.... akina... and Genki based the game course design on on shoot locations. plus they have a car modification listing from mercedez to honda's in it.. yes even the 86' in both levin and trueno form.

now whats really wicked is in the kaido battle 2 game.. you can win/gamble pink slips for actual D1 cars.... + some of the actual D1 drivers had direct input on the development of the game! w00t2.gif

Yes.. happy.gif i was referring to the other courses/passes kaido battle 2 has... it also has Iroha both up and down... which it'll even have you run both ways which is odd.. but from what genki said, they have it based on location spec's.... i played the game for 6+ months straight w00t2.gif .... and i consider this game more fun then Gran turismo 3. because you can setup the cars literalllly.. for grip or drift... all based on one's suspension and tire settings... it's crazie it even has better tactile feedback then gt3 grin2.gif and to add actual mountain passes! ..... only downfall is the music is sookie sookie whistling.gif that aside it's a must buy... thanks pusher1 for the mountain name.. can't keep tabs on em. smile.gif

Posted by: Kurama408 Feb 24 2005, 08:22 PM
what i find amazing is how the courses resemble very much like the real ones....but I wouldn't race on these kind of courses. Too dangerous for my taste. wink2.gif

Posted by: Akira Mar 16 2005, 05:23 PM
Yes a lot orf these mountains are raced on in real life after dark. usually late like 1-2am when no one's around to interfere, but not all, see, some roads have been made to prevent racing, like Akagi, they have little wedges in the roads for better viewability which makes it impossible to take a line. But the only course I know of that were renamed were Akina, which is Haruna in real life, you can see why this place was renamed, for security reasons, and I think it was Usui that might have.. ermm2.gif
Hope that helps everyone out, any other questions can probably be answered so shoot. tongue.gif
And might I add some smart ass punk kids nearly die every week because they have the similar ideas that some of you may, people, don't race on these roads, I'm not entirely against street racing, I'm on in Id forum here, but if you're going to take this is recreation, remember to be responsible and keep it safe and have extra precaution... and people, I speak from experience.. dry.gif

Usui is called USUI smart guy... rolleyes.gif If you'd been there you'd know.
They renamed it simply cause they didn't have permission to use Haruna for whatever reason copyright issues. Or so i read in some interveiw. Obviously shigeno has his reasons... Who knows maybe "Haruna speed stars" sounded really foolish to him.

If kids are stupid enough to die cause of ID then good riddence... I mean theres NO reason to go copying this crap... ESPICALLY those who are copying based on experiences from Arcade stage... Who try turning their cars at 140 KM perh our.

I've been to Iro and akina and mogi before
there all not that far apart

i went to japan on a working holiday for 18mths
saved shit loads of money and made the time to take 4 days off to tour all of gunma ect

the town of akina looks exactly the same, akina is named haruna, and it wasn't renamed its always been Haruna, Akina was made up
and YES there is a tofu store that looks similiar to bunta's and takumi's
but no trueno or sti
just a van.

as for iro, it makes you feel sick cause its as steep as a mofo and all the turning makes ya stomache go owww, i don't recommend tring to drift it, too scary

usi is just like a ring road that services houses and farms in the area, very wide bumpy road
recognising places out of the anime and the arcade stage was sooo exciting

and after all that and saving money and sending 2 container loads of crap to australia i now own a cappachino and trueno and a r34

if you can be bothered with 4 hrs travelling a day so u can save some money then its the best way, or save up and go over

anyways, if u have any questions ask away, no pics cause the camera the pics were on was in one of the containers and got smashed on the boat over

so yeah, so cut over that

anyways, too much typing

Benjhi

Hi Benjhi, I'm quite interested to go Gunma and view the race locations, maybe during my school vacations. I do have some questions. Hope you don't mind.

1. Is Gunma near to Tokyo? What accommodation I can consider to stay in Gunma?

2. Is it better to rent a car to travel around or I can just take a cab?

3. What is the estimated budget to stay in Gunma for a week? I do hope to travel around in just 1 week.

Yep, that's all. Hope I can make use of my basic jap knowledge to communicate with the Japanese in Gunma.

Thanks!

SANGO !!!111

Gunma is North/West ok Tokyo
Gunma is the kind of place where they dont really have cabs lol
You have to rent a mini mini car from the city and drive there,
There is the hotel at Akina Lake
Theres some road side motel things out that way but not alot
i splurged on a car so i dind't get a mini mini car so i could sleep in it
slept at the top of akina one night, so many stars smile.gif
Well i can really tell you te cost in american cause i dunno the conversion
but in australian i think i spent something like, let me think........this might sound like alot but remember its f**king exspensive over there, AU$1500 for the week
including food, rental, fuel ect, so 75% of that is how much american it will cost you
i suggest if your really on a tight budget
get a getting a car bigger than a mini mini is better cause it works out cheaper than a mini mini car and hotel cost, live on ramen and rice and snack foods
only bottled water and for about $70US
you can get a room in Tokyo, the room is 2meter x 2 meters and you have to use public wash house and toilet
theres not much more i can tell you except if u wanna drift while your there
your gonna have to borrow one or rent another car
cause tokyo = mini mini cars, country side = bigger cars
ID cars dont exist in the city's
hope i could have helped

Posted by: sdfgdg Apr 15 2005, 05:14 AM
sorry for assumeing
my bad
but yeah, save heaps cause the worst thing ever is to be stuck in the middle of Gunma with no money and no one to turn to for help

then u have to open a tofu store to save money till u can go home, but at that point why would you tongue.gif

the pic a couple posts up is what the gutters look like in Haruna (the real name of Akina).

Iniital D makes the gutters appear blocky, hence you "drop" your wheel into the gutter, when in fact, you cant drop it like that. You merely drive into them.

Kaido Battle 2 does the most justice for the gutters - you can see that the gutters are sloped and not blocky.

every location is real, the thing you don't see in initial d is the speedbumps and trees the city put on most roads in '98.

Posted by: WRX DEMON Type R May 25 2005, 09:25 PM
myogi and usui are not circuits, but they are real 2 way mountain roads that have a beginning and an end.

Akina is not the true name - it's Haruna.

Actually being Japanese myself and having studyed there for 4 years in 1997, I can tell you that its not easy to drive fast on these roads. First off, unless you have friends to tell you if there cars coming like in Initial D, its a big risk as many of the corners are blind. Downhill is dangerous unless you are so confident of the road conditions and your car and ultimately your driving skills.

While Initial D sort of glorifies the whole concept touge street racing, a lot of nice driving I do is actually on flatter roads like Ashihino Skyline. Its nice and even and has a lot of curves much like England's B roads except better.

A pity I will not be going back to Japan for a while as I am now staying in Singapore.

Posted by: sdfgdg Jul 8 2005, 05:25 AM
i've driven akina and akagi, cause there really quite close together, there are like 3 mountains next to each other, haruna, akina and mogi, can't be bothered spelling properly

and tachi is so right, so can't go fast no matter what time or day or night because unlike the anime there are always cars about :/ cause its the major road that links the lake to the town

oh and the house/restaurant places at the top and bottom or akagi are owned by the same guy, no relevence but i think its cool
plus the whole concept behind the gutter tech. is its just a faster line
its just drifting into the line of the gutters, the gutters just give you a most consistant speed and fast exit speed

also something else which is fun, haveing dinner at the top of akina under the weather station, then tring to climb it ... but thats another story lol

Posted by: TachiTJRS Jul 8 2005, 06:58 PM
Hey 'Itsuki'.....interesting story man...Looks like you have explored the Initial D locales in detail....when I was there, Initial D was in its infancy of popularity (1995-1998) as you can see, it was only around the last year that I bothered to go to Haruna and look around only because I was interested to know if we could try brisk driving (drift was kinda out of the question) on Haruna as depicted in the manga....so..you could say I was with Initial D from the beginning.

The craze at that time was wangan battles in cities while touge driving was quite isolated but people still went, normally in smaller power cars like Hondas, Silvias, 86, occasional FD. In Tokyo, the Wangan was the superhighway battle of the fast and the furious Nippon version.

I think. o.o

Not telling where... but it's a local one... for me.

Posted by: Azuma-Feint Sep 21 2005, 02:39 AM
Hey guys what's up? I just moved to great ol'Gumma this past August. After driving an s2000 in the states of course I had to get a nice car over here. I recently bought a nice Lancer Evolution 2 RS. The interior is shitty as is to be excpected of the RS but all in all it's fast and is quick in the turns.

This past weekend was respect for the old people day so I decided to hit up Haruna, Akagi, and Miyogi. I'll review Haruna but I wasn't able to get to Akagi and Miyogi's passes(more on that later)

Haruna- The Haruna(akina) pass that you all know and love blows.
1st- Haruna is a famous tourist spot and busses run up and down this road a lot. Even at 11pm I ended up being stuck behind a tourist bus.

2nd- Even if it wasn't for the traffic there are all the measures taken on the road to make fast driving impossible. I think most of you know about the famous hairpins and their infamous "dips". Well just as you thought those wavy portions in the road make anything about 50km/h pretty dangerous.

But all was not lost. Route 33(the haruna road) also goes down the other side of the mountain. While it's not as twisty as the famous one it's a hell of a lot faster(I hit 160km/h at one point). Of course almost everyone else knows that the other side of Haruna is the place to be. Going up I saw only a handfull of nice cars/bikes(a lotus esprit mind you) but on the way down I was greeted by a lot of nice bikes, a nice assortment of r33 and r34 gtrs, fds and some fcs.

Most of those guys were cool to me(especially me being a "gaijin"). They said that the cops always hang out on both sides of Haruna so no one really comes here on the nights/weekends.

As I said before the other side of the mountain is a lot faster when it comes to speeds, and this is the reason why I wasn't able to head to Miyogi and Akagi. In all my prep I overlooked the breaks and needless to say they were cooked 1/2 into my 1st highspeed run. Thankfully the 1st turn I noticed the heavy break fade had no one coming in the opposite lane because I was well into the other lane before I could turn. It really sucked as my brake fluid was boiling and I decided to call it a day at that point. No real fun if you can't even get to the bottom of the mountain with out the brakes fading to no end huh?

I placed an order for some quality brake fluid, some good pads, and a set of speed-bleeders to make sure there is no air in the system. Hopefully they will all come in before it starts to get really cold.

All in all I was really sad that the Japanese govt. really "nurfed" the Haruna pass. It'll be missed

Sainz, wherever you are, know that I envy you. Where I am right now, there are zero good roads. Period. Major metropolitan area, after all. And back home there were only a few, and all of them were quite short and for the most part uninteresting.

If anyone says Azuma's lying about being in Japan, I'll smack 'em. XD *pats him on the shoulder* You are one of the lucky ones... it is you whom I truly envy, living in Japan and all. Yes, Haruna sucks now. It's really too bad. When you get a chance to check out the other places (or hell, to even find out about other areas from those local guys...), be sure to keep us informed!

Sainz, i know it is a aussie road because of the tree type, if it was in nz then it be native trees around and ohh also nz has 2 yellow lines for when ur not allowed to cross not white ones and the picture is also hosted in aussie so thats also adds to my conclusion and i havent been everywhere in nz but there are many roads like that aswell along the country roads and also on the way to the beaches and stuff.

They are actually starting to close some of the mountain passes at night. It will mean less drifiting they suppose. There are cameras on some of the more popular and most daily driven Touge. Speed bumps also exist I believe. I'd still drift on them, even if it is illegal. But for practice, I recommend going to the Ebisu Circuit. The tracks and mock touge there are pretty fun.

Posted by: xdriftx Oct 11 2005, 02:23 AM
i don't know about here in the philippines but on another BBS some dude posted a route to a "touge". he says it's mostly vacant, or just cyclists. mostly asphalt, allegedly, but knowing how crappy and life-threatening mountain roads here are, i don't know.

here's the route:
The first one is in Pillilia, Rizal. It's up a small mountain cyclists call "Bugarin". I've actually tried this one (going uphill) and although my 1.6 GLi was having a bit of a hard time, the car was as its limit and I could feel the rear end barely holding on as I rounded teh switchbacks and tight corners at 60kph. To get here, pass through Ortigas avenue. Go straight and go up Antipolo. Stay on this mainroad and just keep going straight. Eventually you will go down antipolo (another Initial D type of road , but too much traffic to "hataw") and hit the bayan of Teresa. Stay on the main road until you reach Morong which is a T-intersection. Turn left and you'll hit a fork, take the left side and keep going striahg for around 12 kms. You'll hit another fork, take the left side and that';ll be the start of the climb. 8 kms of mostly asphalted roads with minimal traffic. Be careful though, maraming siklista dito and you don't want to hit them. Marami rin trucks going downhill.

Nice going guys! BTW, I have finally returned to Japan. Living in Tokyo now and more interestingly, I stay right behind the R246 track from GT4. It's not a real track obviously but a road that is actually the emperor's garden of sorts. And near the Honda Aoyama showroom which you can see in GT4.

If you are interested, I can post pictures of the area that makes the GT4 R246 and you can compare it with the game. I will also try and make a vid of me going around the 'track' with my DC2.

As for the Initial D locations, I am planning to go to Nikko to Irohazaka for a sightseeing trip and will definetly up and down the Touge.

Don't know if this is his particular road, but it's the most awesome one I saw around the town.

This place is about halfway between Tokyo and the Gunma area. If you find Tokyo on Google maps, then you can move to the northwest not too far outside the city and locate this place. Zooming in closer will show you the contour lines of the terrain.

in the uk, we have the "BR Touge" XD

"Back Road Touge"

to me, they are just as complex as MT Akina and Akagi, although they are flat, being as they are backround, they arnt very well kept, and the road condition is bad, and, it sinks into the banks, creating a cambered road.

i have prepared some "stage" infomation involving my local area, the smallest stage is stage 1 obviosuly, and is around 1.3 miles long, and stage 5 which is the lonest, stretchs to 3.2 miles long.

all i need now is my car to test them >_>

I wonder if the real Iro has spaces of no road divider thingies and people actually take jumps like that xD

Posted by: Tessou Dec 4 2005, 07:33 PM
The crew running Irohazaka Road has put new barriers around those "jump" corners sometime after the jumps were illustrated in the manga. Thankfully, they haven't put speed bumps on the corners like they did with Haruna (Akina), so you can still race/drift the course if you're crazy enough to try on the narrow road.

Add that to the fact that the pavement is in terrible shape and you're just asking for a wreck.

@darkpaladinzz: That's a map of a road near Chichibu, in Saitama. Irohazaka is in Tochigi.

EDIT: Since I've been asked and PMed so many times about it, I'll post the REAL Irohazaka video on this thread TOMORROW.

EDIT2: He're it is! the REAL Irohazaka! Enoy!
Irohazaka Downhill

EDIT3: I just noticed that somebody posted the same video in another thread. Guess I'm not the only one with a working copy from that site!

Are the race locations such as Mt. Akina real? If so whereabouts are they located in japan?

ya, most of da locations are real, but not the actual roads, just the mountain itself

I didn't feel like sifting through 12 pages of stuff, so I dunno if anyone's said this or not. Yes, many people race and gather at these mountains. Yes it's illegal. Cops in Japan don't really care that much, which is evident by the fact that they come to the scenes in something resembling a golf cart. Mount Akina now has barriers in the middle of the road so people can't cross lanes and really race anymore. Gay. I'm sure others have them too by now.

Haruna (Akina), like most of the roads featured in the series, has speed bumps on the major corners.

I haven't heard about those median barriers, though. That's something new...

Unfortunetly, all the roads and locations are all real. Right down to the scenery in the background and all the signs, even the resturants. The thing is astute forums here are right about the bumps and barriers on the the popular roads now. Its almost imppsible to race on these touge. Even the famous Wangan highway crowd has died down.

Man, I picked a wrong time to return to live in Japan!

I'd kill a dozen stupid white men to have an Irohazaka replica all to myself. I can only dream of driving on such a downhill mountain pass.
