I could pay for my car mods by charging people to write their fics, haha. Step right up! Good fic for $5! Naaaaaaaah

**************

“If I were the driver of a turbocharged AE85, where would I be easily found?” Keisuke wondered as he drove through the streets in his little red Starlet. It was the only way he could drive near a mountain without being swarmed for autographs by zealous fans and fellow street racers. It also saved him from a number of annoying and worthless challenges delivered by drivers that could barely downshift. Turning through an intersection he spotted a gas station and pulled in.
“An AE85 using high octane wouldn't be easily forgotten,” he said, stepping out of the car and walking inside. Iketani looked up from behind the counter where he was daydreaming of Mako and smiled.
“Takahashi Keisuke!” he said happily.
“Have you seen or heard of an AE85 needing high octane gas?” Keisuke asked, knowing it was pointless to ask if he had ever met the man before.
“I may have,” Iketani said quickly, shaking a finger at Itsuki to keep him quiet. “Why do you ask?”
“He has information that I need. He recently observed an AW11 on Mt. Akina, and I would like to know some more about that car. I want to speak with him and ask a few questions that he should be able to answer.”

“Hmm,” Iketani said, surprised at the new information. “I know that he's a member of the Speed Stars, and we're having a small gathering on Saturday at the usual time. If you promise to race with him, he'll tell you everything you want to know.” Keisuke looked at him with narrowed eyes, wondering at the audacity of Iketani.
“Fine,” he said after a few moments of intense silence.
“Don't think that this will be a battle,” Iketani explained. “This is just for him to experience a true master of the downhill. It would honor him greatly if you would allow him to chase you for as long as he could down Mt. Akina. Is this acceptable?” Iketani asked.
“Yes, it's acceptable,” Keisuke said, relieved that it wasn't another ridiculous challenge. As the blond Takahashi left, Itsuki came running up to the counter and looked at Iketani in shock.
“You want me to chase Takahashi Keisuke?!” he cried.
“I thought you would enjoy the experience,” Iketani replied cheerfully. Itsuki shook his head, unable to believe it.
“That's only two days from now. I have to go practice,” Itsuki said worriedly, hunting in his pockets for his key. Iketani held them in his hand, high above Itsuki's head.
“With Yuichi on vacation, you're not going anywhere until your shift is finished. Go clean the pumps,” Iketani ordered, smiling as Mako's blue Sil80 pulled into the gas station just as Keisuke's Starlet left.

“Mako-chan,” Iketani said happily, smiling broadly. Mako kissed him and then pulled back, chuckling as she twirled her keys.
“Sayuki and I had a battle last night!” she announced.
“A battle? With who?” Iketani asked.
“A white MR2, a really old one. We were kind of rusty, but we held on for as long as we could before he lost us. That driver is amazing. He really is the Fujiwara Killer that they say he is. Do you think he'll come to Mt. Akina and battle Takumi?” she asked.
“I think he's already here,” Iketani replied. “Itsuki saw him a few nights ago and reported it to the website. That's why Takahashi Keisuke was here just now, he wanted some information on the car and driver. He'll be joining us at our gathering on Saturday,” Iketani added. Mako smiled quietly, looking over Iketani's shoulder at her blue Sil80, remembering how good it felt to drive with Sayuki again. Shaking her head, she forced her thoughts back to the present and smiled at Iketani warmly as they sat down on the couch and watched a video of Fujiwara's latest battle, taking notes and seeing how they could improve their own skills. Itsuki, finished with cleaning the pumps, was about to walk back inside when he saw the two sitting on the couch, their heads bent close together, and decided to turn around and make sure he had properly swept up the parking lot. He peeked around the corner into the garage where his Levin was resting quietly on a lift and smiled.
“Takahashi Keisuke is going to race us. How awesome would it be if I could pass him, just once?”

*

Saturday night and the peak of Mt. Akina was packed with the Speed Stars and their friends, all of them there to talk about cars, laugh, relax, and race up and down the mountain. It was a relaxed atmosphere, full of laughter and the revving of four cylinder engines.
“Where's Nakazato?” Mako asked her friend, who blushed slightly before responding.
“He's still sulking over losing to that MR2, so I came here by myself. Feel like another ride for old time's sake?” she asked hopefully. The two retreated to the blue Sil80 that had once been co-owned by them and strapped in.
“Iketani? Care to battle two defenseless girls?” Mako cried over the roar of conversation. Iketani chuckled and drove his S13 over, relishing in the quick response of the ball-bearing turbo he had recently installed. Itsuki and Iketani had both purchased the same model turbocharger, and although it was the perfect size for the AE85's 1.6 liter SOHC motor, it was a bit too small for the S13's 2.0 liter DOHC, hurting his overall power level but dramatically improving response times. The turbo motor reacted so quickly to the throttle it was on the same level as a highly-tuned naturally aspirated engine, a fact that Iketani was incredibly proud of.

As the two Nissan sports cars made their way to the start line, Takumi and his famous AE86 arrived at the peak, parking next to Itsuki's AE85. Trying to talk over the roar of engines and screaming tires, Takumi gave up and simply walked closer to Itsuki.
“This looks like fun,” he said, looking at the other happy teens and those in their twenties, all talking about their favorite subject, and almost all carrying something to drink and something to eat. It seemed like a great party, and Fujiwara was glad he had come.
“It is fun. After Iketani makes it to the bottom, I think I'll be next,” Itsuki said excitedly.
“Who are you racing against?”
“That guy,” Itsuki replied, pointing at the yellow coupe that had just arrived.
“That looks like Keisuke's car,” Takumi said, squinting to see the yellow shape better in the glare of all the headlights that flooded the area. The fuzzy shape snapped into sharp relief, revealing it to be the power-mongered RX-7 of his team mate.
“It is. He's going to race me in exchange for information on this AW11 that's defeating everyone around here,” Itsuki said.
“What AW11?” Takumi asked.

“It's an old white AW11 with what I think is a stock engine. He doesn't accelerate very fast, but once he's up to speed he's almost impossible to pass. The car corners so fast I wasn't able to keep up at all. It was like he turned the wheel and the car was already moving. It had great response and lots of grip. He would go through some of the bigger sweepers by letting off the gas for a moment to let the rear come loose, and then just holding the throttle wide open and powering through. I haven't seen anything like that except from you, Takumi,” Itsuki said.
“There's more. There's a website that tracks his progress. He isn't the one updating it, but someone close to him. He's beaten Nakazato, Sudo, Keisuke, and Mako as well as a couple of people I don't know about. His fans call him the Fujiwara Killer.”
“The Fujiwara Killer?” Takumi said slowly, unsure of such a title.
“Yeah. Everyone thinks he's going to be the one to trash your record. He was going to target Ryosuke next, but apparently everyone voted for him to go after you, so he is. That's why I saw him on Akina, he was practicing. You better watch out, Takumi, I saw him park his car on the side of the road and look at the gutters in the five hairpins. He's going to be dangerous. Anyway, there's Keisuke. Time to race!” Itsuki shouted, running off to his car to begin the battle. Keisuke looked at him in disgust, then sighed, shook his head, and got back into his FD to prepare.

“Your friend is right, you know,” Ryosuke said as he almost magically appeared from behind a cluster of Speed Stars.
“Do you think so?” Takumi asked.
“I know so. I've spent the better part of the past two days analyzing footage of his races and listening to descriptions from people that lost to him. You remember how difficult Hayato was, don't you?” Ryosuke asked.
“Yeah, I do. His car was able to turn so fast, I couldn't keep up.”
“That's because of the instability of the MR2's chassis. You saw it when you raced the Impreza against the Roadster. Your stability forces you to turn slower, while his instability lets him react instantly. The only downfall to that is he has to fight to keep his car straight. He's at a constant risk for spinning out. He seems to be able to handle that, which leaves him in the possession of a lethal weapon for touge racing. Light, balanced, lightning-quick responses... The only weakness I can see is that his engine appears, as your friend says, to be almost completely stock. If that is true, Fujiwara, than his skill is greater than your own. If you were to battle him, you will lose. I know I've said it before and you've proven me wrong, but even multiplying your skill level beyond a reasonable amount won't give you an advantage. I give you a five percent chance of winning.” Ryosuke leaned back on Takumi's hachi-roku and drummed his fingers on the roof as he spoke, but he suddenly froze. With a strange look on his face, he rocked the car and tapped the roof a few more times. Suddenly he chuckled, patted Fujiwara on the shoulder, and walked off to his FC, still laughing.

“What was that about?” Takumi asked, looking at his mentor as he walked away. He reached out a hesitant hand and tapped the roof of the hachi-roku, then suddenly he understood. Carbon fiber! The roof was made of carbon fiber. With a lower center of gravity, it was possible he would be able to out-corner the AW11, or at least corner as sharply. As news filtered up from the base of the mountain that Itsuki had actually passed Keisuke in a few corners before being solidly beaten, the small crowd grew deathly silent. Fujiwara felt headlights aimed at his back and, slowly, he turned around, shielding his eyes from the light with his hand. A figure approached, the light at his back, an amorphous shadow until he held out his hand.

“My name is Masaru Katsu. They call me Fujiwara Killer. I've come to earn my title.”

And yay, reborn AE86 vs AW11!! Cant wait until the next chapter!

I wonder how Takumi will beat the AW11. I've got my own little idea about it, but I'll keep hush, see what actually happens. grin2.gif

I have this hunch that this will be one long and interesting battle that might stretch to multiple runs.. and if I recall right, name Masaru means "Victorious".. but what does Katsu stand for?

Patience, now! I just got my car back from the shop. They had re-used the old axle seals, and one of them had collapsed and been pushed into the differential carrier, allowing it to leak. They took apart the rear end, replaced the seals, and put it back together again. About five hours of labor to replace two little rubber seals that cost about $8 USD.

There'll be an update tonight around 9 PM if everything goes well.

Just a quickie. If you had the week I've had....

*********

“Has the race already begun?” Ryosuke asked as he stepped out of his FC. Keisuke shook his head and pointed at the two cars lining up.
“Both their motors are cold from sitting so long, so they've got to warm up before the race. We've got a few minutes before they start anything serious. What's up, aniki? You look pale.”
“I found out some more about our friend's challenger, and it isn't good,” Ryosuke replied, holding out a thin folder stuffed with articles and website printouts.
“Here, hop in the FC so you can use the dome light,” Ryosuke said, and in a few moments Keisuke felt his eyes widen almost painfully as he realized the situation Fujiwara was walking into.
“This kid is a day younger than Fujiwara, and look at the cars he's raced against and defeated,” Keisuke said as he flipped through all the race profiles.
“Look at this, Keisuke,” Ryosuke said, pointing out Masaru's face in a number of photographs taken at Fujiwara's races.
“He's made a habit of studying Fujiwara's races, videotaping his runs, and talking to some of the drivers that he's defeated. He spent a lot of time talking with Kogashiwa since they drive the same type of car. That's also the reason Masaru chose Akina, to avoid spinning out like Kogashiwa did on Irohazaka.”
“So he knows what he's up against. What makes him so deadly, aniki?”

“He's got more skill than Fujiwara does. He's known for a bag of tricks unlike any other driver out there. I have to warn Takumi before he gets himself killed.”
“Killed?” Keisuke said, surprised.
“Killed,” Ryosuke replied, but as the word left his lips he heard the roar of two Toyota-built four cylinder engines and the screaming of four tires as the AW11 and the AE86 launched themselves downhill.

*********

Edited to add the following picture. It was pointed out to me that in this story Ryosuke has popped out of nowhere a number of times and that he could be mistaken for.... NINJA-RYOSUKE!

Takumi wound out first gear as quickly as it would, enjoying the feel of the lightweight flywheel and the knife-edged crank and the instant response it gave him. With the needle just about to hit 12,000 RPMs he pressed in the heavy clutch, felt the precise moment where the clutch was no longer pushed firmly against the flywheel, and shifted into second, smiling as the transmission made that satisfying noise, something halfway between a snick and a clunk. With the clutch out he pushed the throttle wide open and wound the engine out again, feeling as the tachometer needle raced upwards faster and faster until the 1.6 liter motor was vibrating in its power band, pushing the light and stiff AE86 downhill. The two cars approached the first turn and dove in, the MR2 taking the lead. Fujiwara was content to tuck behind and study his opponent, but the MR2 kept on his brakes after the corner exit, forcing Fujiwara to hit his own or risk impacting the AW11.

The two cruised down the straight at 30 kilometers per hour, each one attempting to duck behind the other. The galleries were puzzled and upset and began to roar in frustration. Takumi glanced at them and then the MR2, sighed, and buried the throttle.
“I wanted to see how good your skill was, but if you're going to pull this kind of behavior, I'll finish it in one battle. Watch out!” Takumi said, opening the throttle wide and streaking past the MR2.

*

“We're too late to stop him,” Ryosuke said angrily, but calming down quickly. “As long as Takumi remains behind, he'll be fine.”
“What happens if he leads?” Keisuke asked.
“Masaru has the same insane skill that Fujiwara has when it comes to chasing. He's not above bumping the leader during a turn to spin him out. On Mt. Akina, that could kill Fujiwara. That AE86 has almost nothing to save him if he crashes. Get back in the FC, maybe we can catch him,” Ryosuke said, starting up the engine.
“Aniki, hold it,” Keisuke said, as Fumihiro ran over to them, radio in hand.
“They're almost at the base of the mountain. Fujiwara led the whole way down, with Masaru close behind. They're going to come back up and try another run,” Fumihiro said.

*

“You're nothing special,” Takumi said, analyzing the car in front of him. The MR2 was light, but it wasn't intimidating.
“You don't accelerate hard out of the corners if you lift off the gas. You're not cutting the corners as close as you could. Why are you so special?” Takumi asked, diving deep into the all-too-familiar corners of Akina. The two cars screamed through in a tight parallel drift, when Takumi tapped the brakes before accelerating again. It was a dirty trick, but it forced Masaru to get off the gas and it gave the AE86 two car lengths of a lead.
“I know how to defeat you. Where's the challenge?” Takumi asked, shaking his head in disappointment. He downshifted and floored it, tackling Akina's familiar curves with all the energy and precision he was capable of. After hurtling through the five hairpins, Takumi glanced up and was surprised to see the AW11 riding his bumper.

“Now it gets interesting,” he said with a smile.

*

“This is corner fifteen. The AE86 is in the lead by half a car length, the AW11 is closing in. What run is this?” the radio worker asked. Fumihiro counted off on his fingers twice before being sure.
“Seventh run.” Turning to Keisuke, he wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“What a difficult night. It's starting to get nice and hot with summer coming,” Fumihiro said. “How do you think Fujiwara is faring?” Keisuke's mind flashed back to the tired face that had showed through the hachi-roku's open window and he felt a wave of compassion and concern wash over him.

“Are you okay?” he had asked. Takumi had looked up at him with tired eyes and a strange look on his face before he had replied, and when he spoke it was in slow sentences that showed how worn he was.
“I'm exhausted,” he had said. “I can't take much more of this. No matter how fast I drive, how quick I turn, or how long I keep the throttle open, he's there. He won't go away. He sticks to my bumper and stays there the whole way down. I don't think I can defeat him.”

Keisuke shook himself out of his memory and looked at Fumihiro.
“I think this is going to come to an end soon. Hopefully the race will end before his stamina does,” Keisuke said.

Takumi felt the headlights behind him pounding on the back of his head, sweat beginning to trickle down his forehead as he shifted down into second and drifted around the corner, his front headlights snagging some of the overhanging plantlife as it brushed perilously close to the guardrail. Using the momentum of the car he spun the wheel, pumped the gas, and drifted through the next corner.
“I'm getting tired,” Takumi admitted to himself. “I need a way to end this. How can I end it?” he asked himself, taking a hand off the wheel to wipe the sweat from his forehead. Suddenly he realized his only chance.
“I've tried everything else to beat him and it hasn't worked. I've never tried this in the hachi-roku before, and it was scary enough in the Impreza,” he said. Taking a deep breath and blinking his eyes to clear them, he put one hand on the shifter and kept the other on the wheel.
Masaru watched in surprise as the AE86 began to move differently. The drift angle was getting narrower, approaching a more conventional grip angle.
“What's he doing?” Masaru asked, surprised to see that the AE86 was beginning to draw away. He pushed harder to keep up, feeling his tires protesting the new driving style and the greater speed.

“This is corner twelve. The hachi-roku is pulling away!”
“Pulling away? How?” Fumihiro asked. No reply came back, so Fumihiro left it alone. Far down the mountain the two cars battled it out furiously, the hachi-roku putting more and more distance between the two. The white MR2 dove into the corners deeper, lifting its front inside wheel from the g-forces it pulled, its headlights ripping off leaves and twigs that overhung the guardrail. Takumi gave a nervous smile but kept his eyes focused on the road, hoping that he wouldn't screw up.

*

“What changed this run?” Ryosuke asked as he leaned on the hachi-roku, handing Takumi a water bottle.
“I'm using one-handed steering. I don't know if I can do this for much longer, but for now it seems to work. He can't keep up. I don't think I'm showing him wrong lines to take, but I am confusing him. I've almost got him, Ryosuke, but I don't know if I can keep my concentration for much longer,” Takumi admitted.
“You're almost there. He's just as tired. You have more horsepower, so use it.”

In the MR2, Masaru focused his anger on the black and white Trueno sitting in front of him.
“I've come all this way, Fujiwara. You can try your tricks, but I'll win. I've raced against Joushima as well. I know what you're doing. I may not be able to use one-handed steer, but I sure as hell know how to fight it.”
