Chapter 1: The Tournamnet

If you would see me about a year ago, you’d think I was just a normal senior at Gunma High. The truth is, though, I am not at all normal like many people would think I was. My friend Itsuki thought I was just some teenage punk who had an attitude and a serious hankering for sleep. When he figured out I was one of the best Touge drivers in Gunma, he freaked out. I was forced to do this by my old man, Bunta who has destroyed me not just once on my home course of Akina, but without me even knowing it was him. (I hate that shitty old man.)

Anyway, I’m known as Fujiwara Takumi. People call me the Pride of Akina, Akina’s Downhill Specialist, Ghost of Akina, and more recently, Project D’s Downhill Ace. I never enjoyed racing (because it was my job to deliver up and down that damned mountain everyday), but a few competitions seriously flipped my thinking around. I might not admit it, but my friends say I’m the best in the entire prefecture. Hell, even my biggest rival and teammate on Project D, Keisuke Takahashi agrees that I’m one of the best.

But this story has nothing to do with my reputation in Gunma. It has to do with the biggest street race tournament held in all of Japan. The Legend of the Touge Tournament began in January. I just got finished racing the last few races with Project D, when I got a phone call from Ryousuke Takahashi of the Red Suns (my mentor and personal hero- he’s so cool).

* * *

“Takumi!” my father yelled from in the tofu shop. “phone for you!” “Who is it?” I yelled back. “That guy with the FC,” The old man replied, “Name’s Takahashi. Just pick the damned thing up already!” I groggily got up out of bed, and walked over to my phone, which was next to my clock.

“Hello?” I said into the mouthpiece. “Takumi?” the other line said. “Yes, Ryousuke?” “Two things. I’m calling about that new engine balance, boring and aluminum block replacement,“ he replied, “the Hachi-Roku’s now at 230 hp, and has probably another eight to nine months left in the engine. But that’s not what I was calling you for. I’ve got an offer. Have you ever been to the Ryukyu islands?” “No,” I said to him, “Never have been. Why?” “That’s where round one is,” Ryousuke said to me, “You’ll love it.” “is it warm?” I asked looking out my window at the blinding snow. “The Ryukyu islands are a balmy 75 degrees right now,” Ryousuke said. “I’m in,” I said with eagerness, “Wait, round one of what?”

* * *

I can still remember it like it was yesterday. One August night 2 years ago, I, Ryousuke Takahashi, met one of the greatest drivers of my time. His name was Takumi Fujiwara. He was the first person to defeat me in my FC (I admit it was partially because of my own fatal miscalculation about my tires), and he did this in an old Eight-Six used for tofu deliveries that he didn’t even own. The kid was so good, I decided to hire him for my race team, Project D.

There was one day that I met with the leaders of all the best teams in all of Japan. Teams like the Todou-Juku and Purple Shadow were planning the nation’s biggest racing tournament in the past 20 years. They were calling it the “Touge Legends” tournament. There were plans of two separate tournaments. There would be an uphill and a downhill. These races would be held at the top 8 teams’ home courses, with the top 64 teams in Japan represented at each race. I knew that I’d have to run as the White Comet once again, so I entered myself, along with bringing back the Red Suns in the tournament, as well as planned the Akagi semifinals round of it.

I was heading towards the first round at Ryukyu in my FC. Keisuke, Kenta and the rest of the Red Suns were following behind. This was the first time racing with the Red Suns in over a year. I also heard that all the best teams in Gunma were invited, from the angsty Night Kids of Myougi, to the underrated Speed Stars of Akina. Even the legendary girl-driven sil-180 of Usui’s Impact Blue was running the downhill.

Everyone in the area knew that this next year would be brutal with the many races and all, but we knew that we’d all eventually cross paths again. This time though, the Akina 86 would take on more dangerous and skilled racers than ever.

* * *

I was just getting on the ferry with my overhauled s13 Silvia when Takumi pulled up behind me in the 86. Its body had severe carbon-fiber modifications done to it, and I wasn’t sure who it was at first, but then it hit me. “Takumi!” I called out to him on the ferry, “Didn’t recognize you with the new body kit. When did you get that?” “Hey Iketani,” he said, opening the door, “Ryousuke installed it when I had it in the shop. He also threw in some more power to the engine.” “That’s cool,” I replied, “I also did some mods to the s13 when I got the job of Manager.”

“What happened to Boss Yuuichi?” Takumi asked, not knowing about what happened at the gas station. “He’s now the owner of all the stations in Akina, Akagi & Myougi. The pay is awesome, and I can afford these new upgrades.” I popped the carbon-fiber hood to show Takumi what I was talking about, “the original SR20 was replaced by a rebuilt s15-era SR20DET, the turbo is a brand new HKS deal, and I’ve got a C-West kit on it. Also had a new set of 14-inch rotors installed in the 18-inch six-spoke bronze Rays rims.” “How much?” Takumi asked. “About ¥2,000,000 at the end of it all. The car’s now a legend in uphill domination with its 375 hp. We’ve already defeated Takeshi Nakazato & his 380-hp 32 GTR.”

We chatted like this for about an hour. We talked about racing, work, and this tournament that we were gong to. “Hey Iketani,” Takumi said, “There are a lot of racers on this boat.” “Yeah,” I said, “I’ve ran into a few coming in. I saw Shingo and his EG6, which he says is now at 230 hp. I also saw the Takahashi brothers coming in. I didn’t bother talking to them, though. I also saw Wataru and his Levin, Nakazato and his R32 and Kai with his SW20. The rest of the guys are coming in later when you reach semi-finals in downhill and I reach semi-finals in uphill.” “That’s six months away in Akagi,” Takumi said, “Hope they come out for the third round in Usui.” “Me too,” I said, and then we reached the docks to unload.

* * *

“So,” my twin brother said, taking a sip of his latte from the café overlooking the harbor “They’re arriving?” “Yeah,” I replied, “They’ve got nothing on us here in Ryukyu. It’s a small, windy course with narrow roads, and all of the first and last corners are blind ones. They’d better let me race Akina’s best on the downhill. We do get first pick Saito, remember that.”

“I’ll remember that, Kakashi.” Saito said, ”They’ll wish that they never took on the Nonaka brothers of Ryukyu. Me in my brand-new rally-made EVO VII with 405 horses will never be defeated.” “And me and my 210 hp EK9 will show that I am the best on Ryukyu’s six guttered hairpins.” I said. Saito then pulled a cigarette box out of his pants pocket. “You know that’ll kill you,” I said with worry. “So will driving, so why are you complaining?”

Sorry, it was originally going to go into fanfiction.net, but my account was suspended two years ago.

I'm shocked, people actually like this!

Chapter 2 is coming up on Friday!

The "spacing" looks like you're using WordPad to write it, without first converting into something the forum likes.

A hint: before you post a chapter, copy and paste what you finish into a new notepad. Turn "word wrap" off (in the format menu), then proceed to fix it so the only spaces between lines are paragraph separations. Then copy and paste that into your post.

Should make it a lot easier to read. Keep up the good work!

Got impatient! So many good reviews!

Here's the next chapter! More'll come at a better pace, now!

Chapter 2: The deadly double runs of Ryukyu

I got a call on my cellphone at about 11:30 that morning. It was Ryousuke, who was giving me the instructions for the races that day. “Okay,” he said, “I’ve e-mailed you a packet for the day’srace. You’ll be pitted against the Kakashi Nonaka and his EK9. He’s considered to be the best grip-driver on the island, especially on the eastern downhill circuit. You should be interested in the gutters on the side of the six final hairpin turns of the course. It is very similar to the five in Akina.” “When’s practices start?” I said. “They’re beginning tonight,” Ryousuke said. “You get first pick for the practice because you’re the downhill ace’s special guest.”

I rolled in to the diner where I was supposed to meet this downhill specialist that morning. I did see a blood red Honda Civic Type R hatchback with a body kit, and I thought that this was the car I’d be racing. I went into the restaurant and found the downhill ace of Ryukyu sitting at a table overlooking the island’s treacherous downhill run. He was a drivernot much older than Keisuke or Iketani. He had a hairstyle that reminded me of surfers that I’d seen when I went to the beach with Natsuki two years earlier. His hair had a bleached blonde look that went down to his shoulders in a mess of a hairdo. He also wore glasses. He was dressed very casually, wearing a black Volcom t-shirt, baggy cargo shorts, and a pair of sandals.

“So,” he said, taking a sip of his soda, “You’re Fujiwara Takumi; legendary downhill ace of the Kanto area.” “You guys have heard of me even all the way down here?” I said, surprised that they’d known who I was. “Of course we have,” he said, looking out towards the beach, “I did go to the first race you were in to see how a Hachi-Roku could beat a brand-new FD, and I’ve closely followed all of Project D’s events online. My name’s Kakashi Nonaka of the Free Mind Team. The EK9 with the Mugen kit out front is mine.”

“That’s kinda what I thought,” I replied, “Where is this course?” “You know,” Kakashi said to me, “gas is pretty
expensive here, so why don’t you ride along with me in my EK9 on the downhill?” “Okay, I guess.” I replied.

We got to the summit of the mountain by taking the uphill side. You could see the turns, and you could easily tell that these turns had tricks. The bottom of the uphill was more cut into the rock, and the blind corners were the result of this. It also seemed to slope up more severely in the middle, and then level out near the top.

At the top there was an old Buddhist shrine. We stopped, and Kakashi got out, and went into the shrine. I followed him, and stopped when I saw him meditating in the shadow of a ten-foot tall Buddha statue. “I’ll just leave him be,” I though, and I then headed out to the EK9.

Looking at Kakashi’s EK9 more closely, I could see how much he put into his car. The large exhaust, red-tinted carbon-fiber lip on the body kit, and the black 17-inch rims showed me that he obviously had spent a lot of money on his car. There was also two bottles in the backseat. They were blue, and they had a nozzle coming out of each one. “Okay, what’s that for?” I thought.

Kakashi came out of the shrine after about fifteen minutes. The sun was beginning to set. “You ready?” he said. “Yeah,” I replied coolly. I got into the EK9. I never knew what this ride would be like, but after it was over, I knew I’d be taking an advantage over this guy.

The ride started so fast, that I’d barely enough time to buckle up my seatbelt. The first turn was a severe right hairpin. I had to hold on to the handle to make sure that I’d not fall out of my seat. "wow," I thought, "his concentration has got to be top notch, but he's running this course like I run Akina."

To me, the first section of turns reminded me of Akagi. The middle of the course, though, had a more rollercoaster-esque feel like the road that I raced Wataru on the first time I got the new 4-AGZE. The enitre road had that dilapidated and confined feel of that hellish road in Saitama.

The final section was oddly on the side of a cliff, and these five coners were reminiscent of some odd fusion of Iroha's intense flurry of turns, but I could easily see the Akina-like guttered corners that Ryousuke was talking about. Finally the road opened up to a ashen-white beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean with a small village on Kakashi's side. We finally pulled into a lane next to a surf shop that had the name "Nonaka Bros. Surf & Speed Shop" on the front.

"Well," Kakashi said, "It's been nice. How about if my brother takes you up to the diner again." "Sure, thanks," I said in the way that you'd expect a teacher would say something like "yeah, sure" to a not-so-exceptional student, "See you on Saturday, I guess."

I waited in the shop, until a brand-new white on red four door Mitsubishi pulled up. A man about the same age of Kakashi came out. He was a very different person than Kakashi, though. His long red hair and dark blue glasses contrasted his dark leather jacket. His shirt underneath was the same red as the car he drove with some odd slogan on the front. He had a sense of coolness about him, but he wasn't one of those really cool rich kids, but instead more like a cool nerd that everyone knew and most people liked.

"Is Takumi here?" he said, coming in and smoking a cigarette. "Yeah, what?" I said. "My bro called for ya. Hop in," he said, pointing to the red rally-striped machine. When I went outside to jump in, I could see that he probably invested nearly as much as his brother in his car.

"So," he said, "You enjoyed your rocket-ship trip in my bro's EK9?" "Yeah," I said, putting my fist to my face, "He's different than me. He can drive like a mad man without a care. I could still notice that he wasn't pushing himself to the limit of his ability." "That's typical of my brother," Kakashi's brother said, "Oh sorry, name's Saito Nonaka, one of the two Nonaka twins of the Free Minds team."

"How long have you two been driving?" I asked. "Probably since our father gave us the keys to take his CRX up to the shrine in the fall on the weeknights, during the slow hours of tourism. We'd do that everyday with him in the car since we were twelve. He owned the old surf shop in town where I picked you up at.

"Every time we'd go up, he had some new setting on it. Wheter it would be a new gear ratio, or a stiffer shock & spring combination, we'd go up with him. By the time we were fifteen, he'd let us take the car on our own. Unfortunately, during a typhoon, we got stuck at the top, and he tried to go up the other way to get us on his moped. We started going down the other way, but I didn't see him coming," He looked out the window towrds the cliffs with the Iroha/Akina style hairpins,

"I was driving, and I...tried to stop, but I couldn't. My brother, who was the better driver, kept saying something about the gutters, but, I didn't listen...." He then spaced out kind of like I do sometimes. "He died not from the hit, but from the 90-foot fall onto our neighbor's roof. I never drove another FF car again, fearing that the understeer would cause another severe accident. That is why I drive my LanEvo; fear of understeer unlike an AWD."

We weren't even driving for five minutes when we got to the restaurant. "This road's a large circuit," Saito said, "We do have an annual endurance race here every year that we both enter, but this tournament is my main focus now."

I was walking towards my 86, when Saito yelled something to me. "You know of any Subarus that run in Gunma?" Saito asked. I was shocked. Could my father actually be running in this tournament? "Is it blue?" I asked. "No," Saito said, taking off an unknown pressure from my shoulders, "It's a black GDB that is claimed to be the fastest AWD-drifter around."

Sweet! w00t2.gif

Another great chapter! Keep it up, but don't set your pace to quickly! I'd rather have your story last me awhile, keeping me anticipating the next chapter then have you race through the story quickly. It's your story though so your choice. grin2.gif

4AGZE is a supercharged 4AG isnt it?

I thought Takumi had a 4AG TRD Group A type engine.

Anyway it was a awsome chapter though. Im guessng those bottles were NOS bottles eh? whistling.gif

Yes, good observation. It'll become more evident in the 9th or 10th(?) chapter with Kakashi's brother.

-also, that last name will have signifigance later. (You just gotta wait to see what that significance is!!) grin2.gif

OK! Next chapter is up!!!

Chapter 3: Hellish Machine

The rumored car that was a late entry in the tournament showed up the first night of practice at about 3 AM. "You mind if I pay you before we get into port?" a man in the shadows asked the ferry operator, "Sure, why? You in a hurry?" the operator replied "Yeah," The man said without really paying attention.

The first people who saw it come up the mountain said that it looked like something out of a b-rated horror flick about possesed 1950's era "American Dream" land-yachts. "Did you see that?" one guy said to his friend, coming back from watching the practices that night, "He's really moving in that car," the friend replied in awe. The only light coming from it were from two large yellow spotlingts and the taillights. They then saw it drift around a corner and into the night.

The next two who saw the car were Mako & Sayuki in their blue Sil-180. They just got it back from the repair shop after wrecking it in Iroha three months ago. "Keep it up, Mako-san," Sayuki said to her partner, "You're handling the new SR20DET's turbo-lag very well." They swung the back of the blue hatchback out and initiated a D1GP-quality drift through one of the blind uphill hairpins. They obviously had some amazing talent. "The shocks are still a bit too stiff, and the turning radius is a little wide," Mako said, "But it's running great. I love this turbo motor and everything else we put on it."

The car kept on ascending the touge when what looked like two yellow eyes came out of the last turn. "What the hell?" Sayuki wondered, "It's approaching us fast, Mako! Pick up some speed!" Mako then began driving her Sil-180 with an aggresive angle, getting closer and closer to the sheer rock faces on either side of her. After they came out of their second turn during their attempted outrun, the car flashed its headlamps at them. "A WRX?" Sayuki thought, "He can't be as good as Mako, though."

The two cars were side-by-side at the beginning of the steep-grade hairpins."Damn," Mako thought, "He's good." "You can get closer, Mako," Sayuki said, holding the ol' "oh shit" handle. "There's still a good 15 cm left on the apex! Next turn, go all out!" "Understood!" Mako said, sending the car through a drift, but the WRX cut into the drift from the inside, forcing Mako to the outside. This made the blue hatchback spin out, but after it regained its footing, the WRX drove back to the near-accident.

"Hey!" a man called out from the black car, "Are you okay?" He then began running towards the blue Nissan, and saw two women in the car. One was resting her head on the steering wheel, and the other was hyper-ventilating. "What," the passenger said, "The hell, were you thinking?!" "I'm soooooo sorry!" he said, panicking, "You see, I was in a hurry, and you two were, uh, how do I say it?" "Slowing you down?" the girl said in an angered tone. "N-no!" the man said, "I-I, I just thought that, y-you two were j-just locals, a-and I thought you'd p-pull over for someone who was here to practice! I didn't mean any harm!"

"Oh," the woman said, "Sorry if I was mean. I just got scared of your car." "Sorry," the man said, "I've been meaning to replace the damned foglamps." "No," she said, "You drive like a maniac." "You're fast," the other woman said, "I respect that." "R-r, really?" the man said in joy, "Would you girls mind joining me for a bite?" "Sure!" they both said in unison.

The 24-hour diner was empty except for two highly modified Japanese mountain racers' cars of choice in the front lot. Mako & Sayuki got into the diner first, and got seated. Then, a man came in. He couldn't have been older than 21 years old. His thick black hair came down past his ears, and his hazel eyes completely contrasted his jet-black hair. He wore a white overshirt, with a blue "STi" shirt underneath. He had a strange complex about him. He looked very nervous and still shook-up from the near-accident he just had.

"Sorry," he said to Sayuki while bowing, "I'll pay for this as my apology." They ordered breakfast, and the stranger driving the WRX ordered a large amount. "You eat a lot," Mako said, "Oh, sorry! Sometimes things like that come out!" "It's okay," the man said, "I'm used to those types of comments. Name's Daijyu Batuyonai, Dai for short." "I'm Sayuki," she said, "And this is Mako." Mako waved in a courteous gesture towards the man.

Sayuki looked at Dai, and for the first time since Takumi, she felt something different. It wasn't just the fact that he was an innocent kid, probably no more than twenty by her guess, and he had a certain nervousness about him, but the way he drove is what really got her heart racing. She knew that Mako was still in love with Iketani, and she was planning on seeing him for the first time in almost two years, in which she finally gave into Iketani. Sayuki was there to comfort her after the horrid incident at the hotel parking lot, and she felt her partner's pain, thinking that her knight in a shining, yet outdated Nissan Silvia wouldn't come for her. Still, Sayuki felt that this Dai boy was a lot like her in many ways.

"How long have you had that car?" Mako asked. "Oh, about six months next week," Dai replied to the good-looking driver, "I work part-time as a repair-shop employee around the Niko shrine area. When I'm not modifying my GDB or studying to become an architect like my father, I'm out on vacation or helping my dad with his restoration on his latest car." "How can you get a car to drift like that?" Sayuki asked, "I mean its still an AWD?" "It is, but the tourque is split in a staggered way that gives more power to the back-end, allowing me to drift while still having complete control of the car."

"What else did you do to it?" Mako asked, already intrigued. "Well," Dai said, thinking intently "I first took the engine out and completely bulletproofed it; aluminum pistons, cylinder heads, block, and crankshaft; the works, as you could say. After that, I rebuilt the fuel injection system. Instead of using a computer-managed fuel injection system, I ran a system that was found on the Audi Group-B rally car." "How do you know that?" Sayuki asked. "My dad's car collection had a wrecked '82 S1 that we rebuilt as a rally car." "What?!" Sayuki said, in disbelief.

"Well, getting back to the engine, it runs a direct-injection system," Dai described, "I did this due to the insane power increases that it gives. The only drawback is that it's now got horrible gas mileage; I can only run one race a night if I was to go at full throttle with full boost. Also, the injection causes the car to spew flames out the back almost like one of those flamethrower kits you see on all those jacked up American cars."

"Finally, the turbos are from the drag-racing circuit. I use these for the fact that they only get their max power at a higher RPM. This gives me the kick I need to initiate a drift. We also had to bulletproof the rest of the drivetrain, and basically create a next-generation Group-B rally car. If you see the car in the daylight, it has an immense widebody kit with some of the most insane downforce ever seen on a street-legal car. I can go through tires as much as I go through gas in a year."

"If I may ask, how much horsepower does it make?" Mako asked. "I do detune it for mountain racing, so as it is right now, its making about 400 horsepower. Tuned for the highways, though, the engine's been known for reaching 650-700 horsepower." Both of the women looked shocked when he stated this last figure. "You've got to be kidding me!" Sayuki almosty yelled, her jaw still dropped in amazement. "You'll die in that car!" "Not as long as I have anything to do about it," Dai responded, "I've basically mastered the Satan B Machine front to back; I won't win all the time, but I won't crash, not like last time. I still have a battle to finish." By this time, the sun had risen, and now there was one day left before the two major battles.

OK, now let's keep things rolling!

Chapter 4: The Story of the Legend

"So," Kai said, looking at the wrecked and burned-out mass of metal that used to be a red '93 Nissan Fairlady Z, "What happened?" "I tried what you did against that guy in the 86 in November," said a young 17-year-old boy, "I'm still not good enough to pull it off." "Ya think?" Kai said mocking his friend, "You're pretty goddamn lucky to survive that without injury." "Yeah," Dai replied, "Rolled it down two of the hairpins. Then it caught fire. That bastard Iwaki thinks he's so f***ing tough!" the young man was on the verge of tears, "One day, you'll see, one day, I'll beat all of Emperor and do what they did to our team! I'll have their sticker on my car cut in half and put upside-down, just like them! They won't mess with Daijyu Batuyonai or the "Hi-Way Fury" team after I'm ready to take them down!!"

Kai's father came by with the flatbed truck to haul the burned-out carcass away, but not before Emperor humiliated them by doing their usual "Losers' ritual" to their team logo. "We'll be back, you bastard!" One guy said. "Quit it!" Kai Kogashiwa said to the random member, "If you want to defeat them, wait for the best time to do so! Then strike!" "You're still not you're old man," Kyouichi said, flicking a cigarette onto the totaled Z32, "If he has any sense, he should at least defend his territory that he holds so precious to him-" "-And not hide in his damned shop!" Iwaki said, with the only intention of getting his son angry. "If you were my dad's son-" Kai said, but Dai held him back. "You said he wasn't worth it," the young boy replied. "You're right," Kai replied, backing off. "This hill now belongs to Emperor!" Kyouichi exclaimed.

The next day, Kai had gone over to his friend's house. It was a big house, one of the biggest in the Iroha area. It had an indoor pool, 30+ rooms, a scenic view of Iroha-zaka, and a 60-car garage that was only halfway full. Dai's father had known Ken Kogashiwa since their days as the "Hairpin Twins". They looked too much alike, and they both pushed each other to their limits. Back when Ken's AW-11 was tearing it up on the downhill, Kouji Batuyonai and his S30Z were setting new hillclimb records almost every month. Kouji since those days has become a world-famous architect, designing many buildings fro stadiums to storefronts. He still to this day drives his 380-hp S30Z to and from jobs and his office.

"Hello?" Kai said over the intercom, "Is Dai in?" "He's in the back garage with your dad, working on the Quattro." "Quattro?" Kai thought as he walked around to the garage.

The garage was filled with every car that Mr. Batuyonai had. He'd have everything from a small Subaru 360, to a Dodge 426 Hemi Challenger. You could almost see any car from any country. There were two Aston Martins (V8 Vantage & DB5), Three Vipers, a Lamborghini Miura, a Toyota Mega Cruiser, a "Ferris Bueller" Ferrari 256 GTB California, a collection of different Ford Mustangs, six different Mercedes (including the SLR McLaren and CLK-GTR), and coming soon, one of the greatest race cars ever; an Audi Group B Quattro rally car replica.

"Gimme that 18 mm, will ya?" Ken, who was under the car installing the exhaust said to Dai. "Here you go, Dad," Kai said, dropping the wrench to his dad. "Where'd you come from?" Kai's father said, coming out from under the car. His glasses, like his overalls, were smeared with grease. His short hair uncannily resembled his son's own head of short & spiky hair.

"I'm just wondering," Kai said, "Can we go get Dai another car? I already okayed it with Mr. Batuyonai." "Well," Ken said, "He's not really doing anything right now, so I guess it's okay. We're about done. Dai, you mind firing her up?" "Sure thing, Mr. Kogashiwa," he said, going into the dated cockpit of the killer vehicle. When he turned the switch to on, the engine roared to life, like a monstrous being breathing for the first time, and this being breathed six flames out. Kai, unfortunately was right next to the exhaust. "Whoa!" he exclaimed, jumping back. Dai was cracking up, and
Kai wanted to kill him, but instead they hopped into Kai's SW20.

"Have you driven an AWD yet?" Kai asked. "No, not yet," Dai replied, "With this new car, though I'll finally get that experience." "You don't want to drive that car," Kai said, "It's way too fast, even for your old man. You'll get killed." "I was looking at the Subaru GC8V earlier, and I've also heard that they're coming out with a new model soon." Dai looked out of the window of Kai's MR2 as they went down the driveway. He was looking at the hairpin nirvana known as Iroha-zaka; one of the most amazing roads in all of Japan. He scoured every inch of asphalt, noticing every turn, and recently devising a way to get down the mountain faster than anyone, even that Takumi guy who beat his hero and friend, Kai Kogashiwa.

Eventually, Dai decided to go for another FR car, such as another Z or a Silvia. His last two non-FR cars were Kai's SW20 when he was just learning how to drive at only 14 years old, and his own EG6 Civic. The civic became a local legend as being the only car to defeat an Emperor's Evo in one downhill run. The "Green Hornet" of Iroha had gotten a great reputation of being the best FF driver under the driving age. He'd always battle Kai in spars down the road during the weekend, starting at Fridays at 9 PM, and ending on Sundays, before the sun rose. It was no surprise that by his senior year he won the superlative of "Most Likely to Fall Asleep in Class", which he didn't seem to mind, because he had the touge to rule.

"Check this one out!" Dai yelled to his friend, "brand-new GDB! Guy says its right off the truck! Awesome! STi model, too!" It has been eighteen months since his Z32 wrecked. Since then, Dai's been running his "Green Hornet", modified for the uphill with a turbo and intercooler 290-hp setup. "So," Kai said, "You actually like black?" "It'll be a pain in the ass to clean, but I can stand that!" Dai exclaimed with joy, "With about 10 mil in it, it'll be a beast!" "With 10 mil, anything'll be a beast, man," one of Dai's friends and member of the "Hi-Way Fury" team said. "It'll be like the Audi rally car my dad lets me drive! Group B for the new generation!" Dai said. "When did you drive the Audi?" Kai asked in fear. "I'll tell you after we get the GDB."

"...and that's how I beat Kyouichi Sudoh." Dai explained, as they stoped at a rest-stop on the highway to Iroha. "Wow," Kai said, "Do you know what this means?" "I drove a ridiculously fast car down Iroha and beat the Emperor?" "No," Kai said, "In the days of Group B, the Audi was the king, but it too, in its perfect nature had its defects."

"The Audi's insane 600 horsepower engine ran through a neanderthal driveline, with the major problem being a severe understeer due to the non-slip front differential. The drivers behind the wheel of the Audi devised the left-foot braking technique to control the vehicle from flying off a cliff into a ravine. When did you bolt te turbo setup onto the EG6, Dai?" "Last year after we came up empty-handed in the search for the best FR car for me." "I'm guessing that the power increase forced you to learn the left-foot braking technique so well, that you're skilled enough to send one of the greatest cars ever made with understeer down the side of a mountain at breakneck speeds!"

I'm Baaaaack!

After nine days without a reliable computer, restoring a hard-drive, and rewriting the next 5 chapters, I'm back!

Here...we...go!

Chapter 5: Quattro

Sudoh was sitting at the middle of the mountain when he heard abot "it" from one of his colleagues. It was no more than a week tomorrow when they decided to go back to the mountain and drive again before the rumored tournament. His cellphone began to ring, and he picked it up from his passenger seat in his Lancer Evolution III.

"What now, Iwaki?" he said, still furious about his partner's inability to beat a weak-assed FD-driving punk. "You, wont belive this, man," the frightened voice said, "But there was just something flying down here faster than anything I've ever seen! Hell, it was faster than the younger Takahashi brother I raced! It swung around the turn, and then it spewed fire, almost like those Audi Group B Rally Cars!" "Are you okay?" Kyouichi said, "You need to lie down or-" then, like a cannon that exploded from backfire, he heard it. He looked up quickly, catching a glimpse of flames coming out of an exhaust. "Oh my f***ing god!" "Sudoh? You there? Sudoh? Hello?" Iwaki said.

The next thing the black Evo did was gun it out of its parking space on the downside of a corner, and try to gain some speed before this hellish fireball would catch up to him. "My mis-firing system'll still beat this old race machine!" Sudoh yelled, as the two vehicles careened into the first of the many hairpins. The rush in was normal, but Sudoh noticed something odd.

"Why the hell is he braking in the turn like that?" Sudo said, referring to the odd flash of brake lights from the ex-rally car. Then it hit him; the AWD systems in those days were so barbaric that they actually understeered a lot like an FF would. "That's why!" Sudoh thought, "that outdated piece of shit can't even run like my AWD system on my LanEvo! I've got this guy right where I wa-" Sudoh wasn't believing what he was seeing.

Sudoh took the inside while the Quattro took the outside on a hairpin, then he saw a flash of yellow, and all of a sudden, things got fiery. "Oh my god!" Sudoh screamed, slamming the gas down to make sure that he passed the outdated rally car, "That had to have melted something! I mean what other car shoots flames like that?!"

When the set of continuous hairpins came up, Sudoh was ahead. "This is where Iwaki and that kid had their accident!" he said, as the Quattro sped past him around the outside. Along the back stretch of the second turn, Sudoh didn't see the Audi anywhere. "Where is he?" he wondered, "It's kind of hard trying to stay in my blindspot with these hairpins and his car's exhaust exploding. Dammit! Where the hell is he?"

In reality, the Audi was in his blindspot all the time, but he switched off his lights whenever he had to swing behind the black Lancer. It was an advanced technique that required concentration and swiftness on these flurries of hairpins, and he succeded in faking out the Emperor driver. Now the only thing left to do was the final stretch. He knew it would be hopeless if he didn't pass him in a turn, considering the race to be a victory for the car and not him, so on the last major turn, he decided to overtake him in the quickest way possible; from the inside.

Sudoh was furious. How could an ancient 20-year old rally car be so fast, even with the primitive and understeering AWD? He knew that the last turn would end the race, so if he could hold him off, then "This race is one for the books!" he said, grinning. Then, the bright lights turned on. "Wha--?" he gasped, "N-no f***ing way!" The car then slipped in between him and the side of the road, forcing him to pull to the opposite side.

"I can still do this!" Sudoh yelled, "With his understeer, I can do this!" The Quattro pushed forward and swept in front of Sudoh, and then it happened. He first swung the wheel hard in the opposite direction, actually whipping the back end out, while the brake lights seemed to flutter and flick around the turn. By the time Sudoh reached the corner, he was gone.

"My God!" Sudoh said, resting his head on the steering wheel of his Evo, "I've never been that pumped in a battle since that Fujiwara kid came through here with his revamped 86. That was one of the greatest moments in my life, just then, even if I lost." The sounds of the Audi's vicious six cylinders echoed off the mountains and hills, and in one half of Iroha's downhill against one of rally racing's most nostalgic pieces, Kyouichi Sudoh was, as he put it, destroyed - and it felt good.
