So I've been talking for a while about getting into SCCA Rallycross and recently made a few posts about my first race, so I figure it's time I take everything and place it in this neat and tidy thread!

I had been talking to this kid in my town for a long time, and anyone who saw my https://idforums.net/index.php?showtopic=42405 knows how the Saab I always saw him driving was the very same one my father used to own, the one I learned standard in back when I was 12 or 13.

So I picked up an '88 Nissan Sentra from the auction for under $400, but I had some cooling system work I need to do before I can drive it at an event. So the Versa got rallycross duty last weekend.

Despite being my first SCCA Rallycross event, and not going nuts with my fairly new daily driver, I managed to finish all seven heats and placed 2nd in my class, Stock FWD. I also helped run tech inspections before the event, and we had to go through roughly 50 cars.

I had an absolute blast, met some awesome people and made a "very impressive" entry into the SCCA Rallycross world, from what I was told by a bunch of people at the event. I finished 2nd in the stock FWD class, and after three heats I was something like 19th out of the 52 competitors at the event. I was even matching (and/or beating) a few Subaru WRX drivers in my Versa!

YOUTUBE ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QahN7SagMUU )

Incar video! *Edit: Music is there because all you can hear in the base audio is the camera mount rattling about.

On my way to a 2nd place finish in the stock FWD class!

So the next event is on Sunday, February 27th and I'm hoping to have this ready to go by then:

I picked up this '88 Nissan Sentra at auction for under $400. It runs and drives awesome, but I would later find out that the previous owner did not keep up on coolant flushes. I assume that the coolant went to ****, and then the coolant in the radiator lost its' freeze protection and busted the radiator. The coolant circulates just fine but it's in terrible condition and leaks out the bottom of the radiator. So I'm just redoing the entire cooling system next week.

Going to flush the system out to REPLACE THE PISTON RINGS YOU FRIEDDD get all the gunk out of the block. Then I am replacing the radiator, water pump, thermostat and radiator hoses to the tune of $170 for all brand new parts. Not bad!

Man, I love that bumper sticker. Assuming I get a phone call about a cl ad I replied to, my Saab project is going to get much more interesting and about 60 additional horsepower. Looks like a sweet car, what are you going to do for tires?

I'm just going to get the car inspected, then put some General Altimax Arctics on the front and call it a day. Those tires are what I have on the Versa and they're awesome.gif

Congrats on getting off your couch and doing something worth a crap. Other random folks, observe and follow suit.

Posted by: Cubits Feb 12 2011, 06:54 PM
Ah, so american rallycross is like our offroad motorkhana. Was wondering why you were going to subject your DD to rallycross! tongue.gif

Nice results. It goes to show (yet again), that a car like the wrx still can't make up for ham-fistedness. Pummelling opponents in what is perceived to be an inferior car is always hilarity. smile.gif

The sentra looks full of win.

Posted by: Bubs Feb 17 2011, 06:20 PM
Set to work on the Sentra today and got everything done. Heat and everything seems to be working just fine and the car is doing well. I'm going to drive it as it is for the next few days to make sure any bugs get worked out, and then if everything checks out I will be doing tires and other preparations next week!

Corroded water pump is corroded. Oh, people and their not-maintaining-their-cars...

Posted by: MetalMan777 Feb 17 2011, 06:54 PM
Hey, if the bearings are still good...

Hideous corrosion though. I think my 6 is going to need a new radiator sooner rather than later due to who knows what kind of deposits.

100 miles and so far so good! Putting the car through its' paces and I'm starting to get pretty confident that I made a good buy. One more day of wheel time tomorrow and then getting the Altimax Arctics for the front!

Posted by: Boost1995 Feb 20 2011, 09:21 PM
Bubs, it looks like the Sentra is up and running nice. I can't wait to see some SCCA action from it.

Posted by: Bubs Feb 23 2011, 06:37 PM
Productive night tonight! Got the rear brakes adjusted so the turn assist lever works more effectively, and I got the Arctics mounted and balanced.

I also diagnosed a rough idle to be a stuck EGR valve.

Only things keeping this car from being race ready are switching my camera mount over to the Sentra and putting my number on it! I'm going to go register it on Friday.

I drove it all over the place during the big snowstorm we had yesterday and it handled the heavy snow perfectly! Tires mounted, numbers placed, camera mounted (borrowed a Flip for this time), car's running good and ready to go for tomorrow!

So the Sentra's a success! I was able to drive it down in the terrible road conditions we had yesterday morning, complete all my runs and drive it home! I was in first place in the Stock FWD class for most of the event, but I had a spin on the third to last run that lost me some precious time. Despite losing almost 20 seconds during this endeavor, I was able to make up so much time on the final two runs that I took another 2nd place finish just eight seconds behind the class winner. I had an absolute blast and can't wait for the next race!

Here's some video I got:

First is my excuse for not getting any good in-car footage this time:
YOUTUBE ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN-yAKnp3wg )

Second is a quick compilation of the last few runs of the day for the Modified AWD, Prepared AWD and some of the 2WD classes.

The car was sitting for a week or two because I blew a brake caliper going down the road and that pissed all the fluid out so I lost brakes. Used the parking brake to stop so I could get to the college and park it there. Did the brake calipers today, the car stops again and is ready to go for Saturday's next event, which happens to be right in my town!

It's just a few miles north on the same road, Route 106. It's at The Lodge at Belmont, also known as "The Dog Track". Basically it's a small casino and you can bet on greyhound and horse races and shit. And once or twice a year, NER tears that dirt lot up!

Just gonna drop this off while I get the rest of the pictures uploaded. Oh, and I got proper incar video this time. cool.gif

Oh yeah, and I have proper door numbers in the works in time for that event. Stay tuned!

Removing the interior of that car would put me into Mod FWD, which that car wouldn't stand a chance in unless I swapped in a SE-R motor from a same-generation car. Or just put a jet turbine on it.

Helping represent NER SCCA and our Rallycross program at New Hampshire International Speedway's open house last weekend!

I think I am going to run this car for the remainder of the season, and then try and sell it as a RallyX car to someone in an SCCA region outside the salt belt. This car is rock solid and I'd hate to rust it out. My intention would be to get a FWD Legacy or Impreza and try and get Subaru dominating the FWD class as well!

We'll see, it's either that or I just run the Sentra until something catastrophic happens. New rear struts going in this week, see how it handles and do the fronts if needed.

2nd place in Championship points right now, 19 points behind 1st (A first place finish is 30 points). Having a ton of fun! Starting to get a bit attached to this car. wub.gif

Seriously, I set to work and had both rear struts completely out of the car in fifteen minutes. This thing could not be simpler to work on.

Best part about ideal rally cars.

We did pads and struts all around, front rotors, one rear wheel bearing (just the bearing assembly), plugs, and shift arm bushings on a buddy's Evo in 3 hours with 4 of us.

My thoughts exactly.

Can of black spraypaint to the tune of 99 cents and a half hour of my time really freshens up the car's appearance. Not perfect by any means, but it passes the five-foot rule so I'm happy with it!

Hey you! Yes, you! I started a website of sorts on Tumblr, you should follow it and tell all your friends and their dogs to check it out!

I am working on catching it up to present day and then it'll be updates on my rallying adventures!

In other news, the Sentra is all ready for Bradford Faigrounds. I am currently 2nd place in championship points with a reasonable shot at first, so we'll see how the rest of the season plays out!

As I sold the Versa and the Sentra is now my daily driver, I finally got myself some street tires so I can stop wearing out my dirt tires. Got them for cheap on Craigslist and changed them in a Wal-Mart parking lot, which went well! Aside from endlessly filing away corrosion on the hub holes so the wheels would fit. tongue.gif

I then drove up north for http://www.onalimbracing.com/photos/2011_New_England_Forest_Rally/, where I volunteered as a Spectator Marshal for the Saturday stages. This involved me driving my Sentra up a rally stage, which was neat! I put 400 miles on the car between Friday night and Saturday without it breaking a sweat.

Since I will be driving to Rhode Island for a Rallycross in September, I am doing some preventative maintenance on the car this coming week, including front wheel bearings. In two weeks I am racing at the "Racing Against Leukemia" weekend, during which all of the different SCCA programs put on events, with the proceeds going to charity. The two events I am competing in are the "DoubleCross", which will be two Solo AutoX runs on street tires, then two RallyX runs the next morning on dirt tires. Times from all four runs added together, lowest time wins. Immediately proceeding those RallyX runs will be the Rallycross Against Leukemia event, which is our regular points event.

The Sentra will continue until the 2011 Championship's end in December. Starting in September, I am setting to work on my new project on the side. This will become my permanent daily driver / rallycross vehicle, where I will be starting in Stock AWD for the 2012 NER Rallycross season. Unless I somehow destroy the Sentra, at that time I am hoping to sell it to someone else who wants to get started in Rallycross. It's been a fantastic car for it! I just want more competition in the form of a much higher attendance in the Stock AWD class, and the fact of the matter is that I want a Subaru again.

It's not about "wishing to get going," it's all about motivation and Bubs has it in spades. He's out there with a piece of poop and getting after it, which is the heart of amateur motorsports (getting out on the weekend and throwing down) and also one of the best ways to learn. Forget about what you have on hand, get out there and get seat time. Spending time in the garage tinkering with stuff that you have no idea will affect the car's performance is a waste of time.

Nope, but you can do what Bubs is doing and live within your means. I lived with a very tiny budget for years when I was in the military, probably on a budget worse than Bubs'.

As far as time goes, if I can make time for motorsports being a senior engineer in charge of several department of defense projects, anyone can. I am monstrously busy all the time and my job is 100% travel (monday morning through friday evening I'm at a remote site and no where near home), so that means the only chance I have to work on the kart is either an off weekend or on the eve of raceday. You'll be hard pressed to find someone more busy than myself. Hell, for the National Championship I'm shipping one kart out ahead of time to a worksite I'm at so I can do last minute changes to it, all while having my backup chassis brought to the championship site by a friend.

Racing Against Leukemia is a weekend-long charity event with all SCCA Programs hosting events, with all of the proceeds going toward research to find a cure. If you are able to help donate to a great cause, check out the above link! Thank you so much.

As for current progress, I'm looking forward to a great weekend coming up. New wheel bearings are going on the car today as preventative maintenance.

RAL Weekend starts on Friday, when I start my first ever TSD Road Rally. I managed to find a lady friend to be my navigator; neither of us have any experience in TSD Rallies so this ought to be hilarious!

RAL Weekend continues on Saturday with the DoubleCross. The DoubleX combines Solo(Autocross) and Rallycross with two runs of each discipline. Times for all runs are combined, lowest total time wins! Competitors can either find a co-driver and share a prepared Solo car / RallyX car for each, or just put some street tires on their Rallycross car as I'm doing. These will be my first ever paved competition run, looking forward to it!

Sunday morning is my regularly scheduled Rallycross points event!

They put in some good times; they came out with an entire crew. All younger guys, apparently they are preparing it for stage rally. But, I was some 10+ seconds ahead of them by the lunch break and they couldn't recover.

Just bouncing this off you Bubs, Imo that Sentra needs.... Racing stripes! The're not rice if the car has ACTUALLY raced, right?

Posted by: Bubs Aug 23 2011, 02:14 PM
Since I sold the Versa, the Sentra has been my daily driver. I am currently first in championship points for the 2011 NER Rallycross Championship in Stock FWD, two more events this season so let's see if I can hang onto that lead!

The Sentra should hold up just fine for the final races, and at that point I am hoping to sell it to another person who wants to start Rallycross, or even sell it to a 24 Hours of LeMons team for $500 ($300 if they will let me be a driver for an event!). I just want the car to stay in motorsport; to be honest I would rather see it get smashed up at a LeMons race than sell it to some random person who will scrap it the morning it fails to start.

Know any LeMons teams looking for a car? wink2.gif

Looks like once the Sentra is done with Rallycross duty after December's event, a team of NER Rallycross drivers (myself included) will be stripping the car of what little extra weight it has, and taking it to compete in at least one 24 Hours of LeMons race. More info once details are worked out further. - canceled due to different priorities for other drivers

I would much rather see it get messed up in a LeMons race than sell it to some schmuck who'll junk it the first time it doesn't start!

Thanks! It was a really fun site, the lot was a lot longer than usual sites, so it was more of a slalom course than the usual tight corners we get. Good times, one more event for the Sentra, and for 2011! Still working out who I am selling the Sentra to, and still working on picking up my new Subaru!

Ran through the mud for eight slippery runs on a beautiful, sunny day on a mountain top farm in Vermont! Finished with a clean 2nd place, a sweet Wolf trophy and a secured my spot as 2011 Stock FWD Champion!

The Sentra is sold to a gentleman who wants to get started in Rallycross - and went to school with my hero - Wyatt Knox! So he will be back next month running the car in Stock Front again, which will be very cool!

Rumor has it that our own MattW will be there as well, running his Volvo. thumbsup.gif
Stafford Springs, Connecticut (At the race track) will be a two-day event, as it was last year. Believe it is the third week of January 2012.

Updates on this to come soon! Already got all my new graphics in, waiting to repair the quarter panel rust before I get started on the livery. Who knows how I will do in Stock AWD as far as competition is concerned, but I will definitely have fun and that's the most important thing. Time and funds allowing, I will also be driving out to Tulsa, OK in October 2012 to try my hand at the National Championship!

Here's the latest update from this weekend:

I volunteered to work checkpoints at Frost Heaves Road Rally on Saturday, and Slip-N-Slide Rallycross was on Sunday. I dual-registered for the Rallycross, in SA with my car, and in Modified FWD in a Dodge Neon (with a 2:1 steering quickener, but more on that later!) which was shared with a fellow driver. Figured it would be fun to drive a modified car for the first time!
user posted image
Working checkpoints was a very interesting learning experience that went much more smoothly than expected. Glad I was able to help out, I was the only dedicated checkpoint worker at the event, any checkpoints I couldn't cover were run by "run workers", rallyists who stop to work a checkpoint. The route covered 160 miles of eastern New Hampshire and western Maine, with plenty of scenic paved roads and exciting dirt roads, made very challenging by the mud and severe ruts. Glad I was able to help out!
user posted image
This was the second checkpoint I ran, which was a closed checkpoint on a one-lane, ice-covered dirt road. Rallyists drove over the timing hose, and continued on their way. For this one, I simply had to see their number as they went by, and record their leg time.
user posted image
Checkpoint #10

I then went to the finishing point and hung out with everyone for their awards, since a good portion of the guys running the TSD Rally were also fellow Rallycross drivers. I met a couple of people at Frost Heaves that actually came out and competed at the next day's Rallycross, and few more future Rallycross addicts who hope to come out to the next one!

After driving all over New Hampshire and Maine, I made my way back to my town, washed the mud off my car so I could use my camera mount on the outside at the race, topped off my fuel and washer fluid, then proceeded to pull out onto the road...and Dennis sputtered to a halt. Turned the key, no fuel pump noise. Fuel pump had given up. Unfortunately 10PM on a Saturday night did not give much hope for finding a new one, so I had to throw in the towel. Really hoping to not have to miss my race in Stock AWD, and since I was also running in M2, I found backup transport in the form of one of the work vans from my job, a lower-resale-value-purple Caravan, and headed out bright and early (losing an extra hour of sleep due to DST, dammit!) to New England Dragway in Epping, not knowing if I would even find anyone willing to let me use their car. I just figured, head on down and make the best of it, and I'm sure everything would work out. Considering how far away from home I was all day, it really worked out the best it could, since the failure happened right as I got back into town. A good samaritan with a pickup truck helped me get my car home with the help of my tow strap. The price of the new fuel pump is nothing compared to the tow fees I would've had, if it had happened 100 miles from home. I really should invest in a AAA membership, as I have been telling myself for the past few years!

I got to the event bright and early on Sunday morning, and seeing the smiling faces of my fellow Rallycrossers helped me forget that I needed to sort out my car trouble the next day. Nice thing about Rallycross is that it's kind of my positive escape from the stresses of day-to-day life. Everybody is very positive and friendly, and you can't help but have an awesome time no matter what. I started talking to my fellow SA drivers, and got a few offers to be able to borrow cars, at least for a run or two. Then, I ended up talking to Paul, who drives a black '99 2.5RS - not only was he more than happy to let me drive his car and be able to race, but he let me use his car all day! Paul, I've already said this to you countless times, but thanks again for saving the day and allowing me to compete in my class. You're a gentleman and a scholar.

A very muddy course awaited all 70 competitors, more muddy and slick than I have ever seen before. Slip-N-Slide truly lived up to its name this time. A slalom over the one section of hard gravel was the main place to make time, after that it was a game of keeping momentum - even AWD cars were struggling. Quite a few cars got stuck, including a Subaru, thankfully we have multiple drivers who compete in trucks that helped pull stuck vehicles out of the muck. Very challenging and difficult to remain consistent, but as much fun as always and I managed a comfortable 4th place finish in the borrowed 2.5RS. I would have been pretty happy with that place, even if I was in my own car!

Here is the Modified FWD Dodge Neon I also drove, and what a blast this car is! Modified FWD is a very fast and ultra-close class with a bunch of very skilled drivers. With the 2:1 steering quickener, steering was pinpoint-control like a go kart, which made the slalom sections insanely fast and exciting! I was very glad that David Dennis offered for me to play in Modified FWD with his car, and riding shotgun with him at the wheel was a hell of a rush, and a great learning experience watching his expert left-foot braking.user posted image

So that wraps up a very hectic, but fun and memorable weekend! Staying positive and making the best of a less-than-optimal situation, I had a blast, did pretty well in Stock AWD and had a great taste of Modified FWD to boot. If I ever move to a non-stock class, a steering quickener would be an invaluable upgrade. Thanks again to Paul for letting me use his car, to David for letting me play with the Neon, and to everyone who organizes and participates in our excellent Rallycross program and makes it such a great place to be.
In other news, after a while of trying to find one, and then confirming that the non-functional hood scoop won't put me in any issues with stock class, I was actually gifted a RS / OBS hood, that even happens to be the matching color, by Modified AWD competitor Ryan Wilcox (sharkattack). He saw that I was looking for an OBS hood, and he just happened to have this one laying around, collecting dust, and was nice enough to bring it to Slip-N-Slide and give it to me free of charge! Looking forward to putting this on after Dennis gets running again. Thanks again, Ryan!

The fuel pump issue is being worked on currently, have a new one on order and should be all done within a few days, whenever the part arrives. So glad you don't need to drop the gas tank to access it in these cars.

I also have decided to help New England Region SCCA by running a tent at New England Forest Rally 2012, in the "Rally Village", to help promote SCCA Rallycross. It is a go, and I am really looking forward to helping get even more people to come out to events! I am planning to run a similar deal at Wicked Big Meet, and so I have started working on a display plan. At NEFR at least, there will be a tent with my car under it, and it's pretty simple. Basically, just myself, Dennis, and a table. Some posters with information, photos, trophies, SCCA membership forms and information, and my laptop playing videos. Should be great!

Here is draft #1 of the toaster poster ideas.
