Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Initial D General Discussion > Shigeno working on another new series

Posted by: BOZZ May 23 2015, 08:57 AM
Looks like Shigeno is working on another new work after having finished his first post-Initial D work after 2 volumes (Takane no Hana) back in Decemeber.

The new series is apparently about a fashionista who has an amazing right arm who joins a woman's baseball team. A pretty big departure from his previous works to be sure...

Unfortunately, he don't give shit about cars anymore sad.gif

I wouldn't either if I wrote a declining series for over a decade.

Posted by: kyonpalm May 24 2015, 07:57 AM
Guess he got the itch for action again already. Shonen is in the man's blood, after all.

Posted by: Tessou May 24 2015, 10:44 AM
Main character ejected for illegal substance on arm. Unfair advantage. Series cancelled.

Posted by: kyonpalm May 24 2015, 02:41 PM
I wonder if he'll try to rip off Adachi Mitsuru, since he's also playing the romance angle with his other new series.

Posted by: BOZZ May 25 2015, 04:10 PM
I wonder how long this one will last, his other new work clearly didn't last very long...

Posted by: CharlieParker May 31 2015, 02:16 PM
It's pretty simple to me....

A post touge / project d Manga.

Takumi and keiskes life and new challenges in the pro world and how all they learned from ryuske and the streets helps them in the pro world.

We need more Bunta and way more itsuki and all the speed star characters.

We need the side stories and the friendships.

There is your money and there is your next ten years

Thing is Shigeno clearly got tired and bored of Initial D many many years ago just before the final story arc focusing on Kanagawa (although some might argue he got bored and stopped caring long before that).

Posted by: Wanadrift Jun 21 2015, 04:24 PM
There is A LOT he could expand on if he really wanted to.

-A prequel featuring Bunta and Takumi's mother.

-Impact Blue and Iketani's relationship.

-Release Keisuke's races from the 4th stage and the what about the races that were never even included in the Anime.

Maybe slightly less work re-release the entire thing in HD lol

I feel like anyone could continue Initial D from this point. Considering stage 5 and final stage were weak apart from the first episode in stage 5 which i enjoyed a lot biggrin.gif

They could continue the series in so many ways but as always, everything that i love is never "popular"....instead we get endless episodes of Naruto >__<

In North America, they need to make the cars be Iphones to make the series catch on haha biggrin.gif

His new series seems to be still going, I kind of wonder how sales are and whether it'll last longer than the other one he did.

Posted by: Tessou Sep 30 2015, 09:18 AM
Unremarkable sales and will last a long time in obscurity, are my guesses.

Wait for the inevitable post where I'm told that I don't know Japan and should shut up.

He's going through new manga like pairs of underwear. Third time's the charm?

It's almost like after two flops he gave up trying to do something original and figured going back to racing stories would do the trick.

Posted by: Tessou Mar 30 2017, 11:22 AM
Sounds like a dumb concept for a new manga anyway. "This guy is a pro racer coming back to a country where self-driving cars are the norm." WHAT IS THE POINT?

Well at least this time he can mess around with timelines and not worry about introducing cars that don't match up with the presumed date.

Posted by: The Sixth Element Mar 30 2017, 04:07 PM
Shigeno finally realized that most of viewers wanted matchup of *such vs. such* cars. : )

The point is in this timeline the MC is a particularly rare breed. It's an interesting enough idea, I am curious to see how Shigeno builds around it. It could be trash, it could be cool. This will only be his third racing-oriented series.

Hopefully it turns out as good as the other two, although you could argue that at least one of his one shots (from before Initial D) was tangentially car-related.

But... who the hell will he race against if nobody in Japan knows how to drive? It's a neat concept, albeit absurd.

It's going to be interesting to see how this pans out. I'm looking forward to Initial D fans pouting because it's about cars but not a sequel, no Takumi, no real cars, etc.

I've got a good one biggrin.gif :

It's the story of a boy called "Carrera w00t2.gif Makoto" (Carrera = Birth Name, Makoto = Given Name)
who comes to a club where people racing Modelcars on miniature Racetracks.

He tries hard and after a while he becomes No. 1 in the Club.
Than he competes with members of other Clubs in his Prefecture and sone he becomes No. 1 there.
Than he competes with members of other Clubs in whole Japan and becomes No. 1 in Japan.
After that he competes with members of Clubs in the whole World and becomes Worldchampion.

All through the Manga our Hero must face different Opponents with different Modelcars, bring his own potential and that of his Car in every Race to the Max and deal with problems with his girlfriend.

I would call the Manga "Slot Racer" thumbsup.gif

I don't know if a Manga (or Anime) like this already exists, but if not Shigeno-san (or anyone else) you're free to use my idea.

Sounds good. People, myself included, want him to just get back & start writing more stories about Takumi. That's his baby, so to speak, so he'll be forever linked with Shigeno like Goku is linked to Toriyama, granted on a much lesser scale.

I'm happy that he's drawing more stuff about cars tho' ~ hopefully he doesn't take it too Sci-Fi & start throwing in some iRobot kind of shiz ~ laugh.gif

If it gets animated that'll be a plus too ~ clover.gif

I know there is a steady stream of new DB projects, but has Toriyama gone back to the manga after he finished it to continue it? The only person I can think of who is linked to one particular series and gone back to it is the guy who did the Rurouni Kenshin manga, he's done a short series on it and is starting up a whole new manga in that series.

That's a very interesting observation though ~ that very few manga artists return to their magnum opus. Even Rumiko Takahashi or Inoue from Slam Dunk never did that, aside from probably a couple of doujin style one-shots. ohmy.gif

Why did not let other people draw Initial D (or Spinoff) Manga ?

For example look at Neon Genesis Evangelion
There are the following Manga available in english (I don't know if there's more in Japan):
"Neon Genesis Evangelion"
"Neon Genisis Evangelion - The Shinji Ikari Raising Project"
"Neon Genesis Evangelion - Campus Apocalypse"
"Neon Genesis Evangelion - The Shinji Ikari Detective Diary"
and new in May 2017
"Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Legend of Piko Piko Middle School Students"

It's always "Neon Genesis Evangelion" with the "Original Neon Gensis Evangelion Charakters" but in different situations and drawn by different people.

So why did not do the same with Initial D ?

Very good to see Shigeno-sensei return to motoring manga!

Sailor Ace didn't seem to be that big hit since it wasn't showing in manga selling charts, but made it to 6 tankobons, much more than Amazing Hana's 2 and I was getting afraid it might be popular enough to continue for several next years. So, bring it on, MF Ghost! Here are hopes it won't be that sloooow paced like Initial D ending!

Also interesting is that Kusunoki-sensei is back at Monthly Young Jump (after Big Comic Spirits affair called Ginkai no Speed Star and collaboration manga project Kami-sama no Joker) with yet another Wangan Midnight sequel called Shutoko SPL -Silver Ash Speedster-, telling a story of 42 years old tuner rediscovering his passion for shutoko racing.

Does anyone know if there are any other car/motorbike manga than those nowasays? The only other one I know is Toppu GP just recently relased in west by Kodansha. Others like Capeta and Countach ended long time ago.

But knowing Shigeno and how popular is Initial D among car enthusiasts in Japan, I'm sure we'll see some nostalgic cameos happy.gif

Now, looking at this ad posted by Rain197:

It may well be the silhouette of a Toyota GT86, and it says it'll take place in year 202X, too (remember the beginning of Initial D manga... 199X wink2.gif ) so the ZN6 could be 10+ years old by then derp.gif

Not quite, actually. I mean if we take the current GT-R (2017), and this takes place in 202X, then it's between 3-12 years old. The AE86 started in '83 and ended in '87, so driving it in the 90s means it'd be between 3-16 years old depending on the MY and the actual year.

And neither is anywhere near the far-fetched hyperbolic shot at equivalency you made at the end of the post. wink2.gif

Personally, the only thing that bugs me--and always has--is the parallel-universe-effect of Initial D, where we just conveniently ignore what cars existed when in order to shoehorn neat/new things into the story because there's such a huge gap between production start/stop that the author forgot where his own story took place. It's less a car being old that bothers me--if that did, I wouldn't like Initial D at all--and more cars being present in Initial D that shouldn't have even been there in the first place.

Thankfully, this isn't Initial D, so Shigeno can do whatever the fuck he wants. If his only sin thusfar is having a car a mere 3-12 years old be the hero car, then I'd say he's off to a good start.

After how everything newer than Fourth Stage and Extra Stage 2 just failed to get the racing action right most of the time, I'm not optimistic about a good racing anime getting produced anymore. Most of the CG animators that are actually good at animating cars seemingly either left the industry or moved to studios that are too expensive/too busy for Avex, and there doesn't seem to be a director around who actually understands how to make car racing scenes work anymore either.

Maybe the manga itself will be passable if Shigeno avoids some of the dumb decisions of Kanagawa-arc Initial D though. Won't expect it to be half as good as early Initial D, but it could at least compare to the racing manga that aren't Initial D, Wangan Midnight and its offshoots, Over Rev, or Capeta.

Posted by: Tessou Aug 29 2017, 09:50 AM
Don't expect much out of the manga either if his latest works are any indication of his (lack of) writing ability. Shigeno's talent flamed out somewhere in 05-06 and never came back.

They all went to the video game industry ~ there's no money left in anime nowadays. That's why most of the stuff that's come out over the last decade looks homogeneous & blasé.

Considering Shinji & Takumi were teleporting by the end of Final Stage and wings sprout out of the AE86 .. I have absolutely NO faith that Shigeno will make MFG one iota realistic or technical. laugh.gif

But I'll be damned if that race queen holding up the round cards with Takumi's face doesn't look hot!

Character design is hideous. The man is regressing.

Posted by: Meteor Aug 31 2017, 09:55 AM
It's less that he's regressing, and more that he's been trying too hard to attain a more semi-realistic style. And when you're experimenting with semi-realistic styles, things can start entering uncanny valley fast.
Either way, someone needs to tell him to go for looser and more streamlined styles again. I don't find that artwork posted above to be horrendously ugly, but it's definitely not as good looking as early Initial D's character art.

And yes xiao, {citation needed} tongue.gif
Entry-level animators get paid slave wages, but the industry itself is raking in more money than ever, especially with American and Chinese streaming sites paying to stream tons of anime every season (not an inconsequential amount of money, even if it's not where their main profits are coming from). Heck, Chinese investors have even been trying to break into the market themselves, the same way some American companies have been trying to get onto production committees for potential hits recently (if not funding them outright). The reason for this drop in quality you're perceiving has a lot less to do with money, and a lot more to do with time and manpower.

(Oh, and you possibly neglecting to look out for the shows that have actual animation talent thrown in, or making the typical mistake of conflating good animation with pretty pictures tongue.gif).

Lots of shows are getting made each year, but fewer and fewer animators are joining the industry because work conditions suck so much, so there aren't enough skilled animators to go around for all of these shows. Some studios just have to make do with whoever they can find, and some animators have to work on several shows at the same time, and so you inevitably get some shows where they just couldn't look as good as they wanted to. A good example of this would be ufotable's God Eater, which Bandai Namco forced them to make while they were already busy with Unlimited Blade Works. Both shows had more than enough money, but the later episodes of UBW couldn't match up to the earlier ones because their animators could no longer just focus on one show, and God Eater ended up with numerous missed air dates because they couldn't get enough done in pre-production. Meanwhile, One Punch Man is an example of stellar animation being done on a completely average budget, and that was all down to the animation director knowing tons of good animators and the production schedule never hitting a hitch.

... And that still has nothing to do with CG, or why CG animators would be leaving the industry entirely. On the whole, CG animators aren't nearly as underpaid as the entry-level animators that draw inbetween frames for the 2D stuff, and generally have fewer issues with scheduling unless they're working on Berserk 2017 (where the production schedule went to absolute hell before the first ep was even made).

Sounds like regression from his original style, which wasn't trying to be realistic until around 08 when everybody got too uncanny looking (and identical).

This is terrifying.

Arguing? No. The problem is that you made a completely unsubstantiated claim about how the industry actually works, and phrased it as if it were objective fact. This is something you do constantly and have no remorse whatsoever doing. So I'm calling you out on it, because there are people here who may not know enough to know when you're pulling 'facts' out of your ass.

Ok, MF Ghost probably won't have that good storytelling and Shigeno's human artwork is getting a little strange, but I'm certainly looking forward to his magnificient car and landscape artwork, and I hope I am not alone. I am very curious where the story will be set and what other cars than that pictured Nismo GT-R will play out the main roles. Concerning the Nismo, interesting bit is that it is apparently more expensive machine than any Initial D car (with $175 000 stock car price tag)!

The backgrounds in Initial D (and likely all his serialized manga) were actually handled by a separate artist, as is commonly the case for weekly manga where one artist can't reasonably be expected to draw everything. An omake in an Initial D manga volume even gives a little look into the people behind the manga and says who does what.

But yes, his car artwork is definitely going to be as great as ever.

The North Korean guy wouldn't nuke the racetrack. He'd just have all the better racers kidnapped as instructors for the Best Korea Racing Program, where they would be "encouraged" to tell the world that they came to NK on their own, that they're being treated well, and that South Korea really really sucks.

I'm glad because at least we all have something to talk about, looking forward to see how it progresses.

It will progress poorly.

Look at how this is going already. The promise of an actual race at the end of the conga line of time trials. Main character aloof as fuck and not so subtly being pushed as the dark horse that will beat everybody despite not going through the usual paces (not participating in the time trials, or at least not until the end) and cutting to the head of the line by default.

Why even read this drivel? You know what's going to happen. The only racer so far that has been given a personality is the first guy with the GT-R. Guess who will be MC's rival? Main character hasn't shown one frame of ability but the plot synopsis already guaranteed that he'll be a genius "beyond level" racer. He's going to cause an upset in the rankings, beat the GT-R (or whoever is at the top), and that'll be it, because the plot demands a long ass series of time trial qualifiers to get to the next actual race. Are you really going to invest in months of this buildup for a finish you already know is going to happen?

The usual rabble is already frothing at the mouth as this being the sequel to Initial D, forgetting that the series ended on such a sour and disappointing note after three years of a slow, agonizing, uneventful death. You wanted more of Shigeno in his post Purple Shadow "creativity"? Here's more. It's a bucket of shit. Bon appetit.

This is very true. Isn't it the way manga (in fact almost all hero comics, books, movies etc.) usually goes? From the beggining you know that main hero will triumph in the end, but you still read or watch the story to see how it is going to develop. All right, Kanata will eventually stand on the top position with his tuned GT86, but I'm still excited to see how the story goes.

Posted by: Tessou Sep 17 2017, 02:12 PM
That's an incredibly vague look at how shonen storytelling works. The first chapters are almost as a rule supposed to have more of a hook to them in order to increase readership. The main character does not have to win in the end. Some of the more fascinating series' actually had the protagonist giving it his/her all and ultimately failing... which made the story more interesting because it broke the mold.

Death Note. Technolyze. Wolf's Rain. Trigun (Knives wasn't the real bad guy). Berserk. Hellsing. Silent Mobius. Elfen Lied (anime at least). I can go on.

I'd rather have the MC end up in the top 10. Not #1. But it's going to happen, because Shigeno put too much into the initial PR for this series. He telegraphed everything.

I understand umu's point, but if there's no substance to the journey, what are we really getting out of the destination? Shigeno lost his touch years upon years ago and this board was full of people complaining about it. Him bringing out a new series isn't going to magically turn his skill around. The guy is very obviously burned out.

Posted by: The Sixth Element Sep 18 2017, 09:31 PM
I just saw the manga release and .....the line up of JDM and EDM cars mixed up is what I wanted to see IN INITIAL D NOT MF GHOST!!!! Why did shigeno just make a story basically around the concept of the nuremburing time trials? Even in Initial D manga, the manga didn't cared about the time record because it is only to develop a point about takumi and how fast he is. Its a means to an end, and once you used that mean to create a good story, it usually doesn't work.

I am still delighted that Shigeno-sensei returned to car manga, but as I am looking through first chapters I have a problem with two things:

- I don't really see why the 202X people would use selection of top 2017 supercars for racing, they could as well use 202X's electric supercars from the same manufacturers, which would play the role equally good. Especially considering the sterile style of their racing (maximal safety, no people around track, viewed only through drone footage). I think even the "real cars that needs skilled drivers" factor doesn't hold, since cars like R8 or 488GTB are doing half of the work themselves.

- When watching Initial D in early 2000s, man could feel some sort of connection between manga/anime and reality. Many of us had some old and not so fast car, but felt motivated by the story, worked on our driving skills, tried various Inital D driving techniques etc. But MF Ghost is pure fantasy story about pro racers with most of the cars being outrageously expensive (ok, Kanata will probably use GT86 which isn't that expensive).

The MF Ghost race is labeled as a "vintage" race series since regular cars on the road in this timeline are all self-driving and unable to take part in racing. Who knows how Shigeno will explain how auto manufacturing suddenly shifted entirely to autonomous vehicles, if ever. "Ryo Takahashi did it."

The answer to that has already been given. The whole concept is that the MFG is a historic racing series, using older cars instead of the electrics and self-driving cars that dominate the story's version of 202X.
(Speaking of which: I don't really see electrics taking over anytime before 2030. I doubt there's enough lithium in the world to make all the batteries required for that)
So yeah, it's just Shigeno's way of getting around the 199X problem of Initial D. He's setting the series years into the future, and giving it a reason to only focus on present-day cars regardless.

Edit: Tessou beat me to it.
