I have a 4.5 year old, who likes cars and cartoons. I just recently have rekindled my love for Initial D. I just purchased the Funimation set, previously owning all Toykopop DVDs (I know, I know...) as well as a subtitled bootleg of Stages 1-3. Stage 4 was just coming out when I stopped watching (wasn't for any reason in particular, just fell off the radar).

I've also recently become obsessed with buying a Version 1, 2, or 3 arcade game, so if anyone knows of one for sale (near Denver preferred, will consider others though), please let me know!

Any ways, I remember there are a few adult themes mixed here and there (Mogi's occupation, Mako's proposition to Ikentai, and the beach/water slide/shower scenes), but there is no way that my kid would understand any of that yet. So my question to you guys is has anyone introduced Initial D to a child, and what age?

Congrats on the 4½ y/o little kiddo happy.gif ~ my ex gf's around the Denver area close to Aurora she works for Coke & says the sheer amount of EDM shows every month is just mind-blowing haha laugh.gif ♪ ♫

I think it's never too early to start young kids in the slow descent into anime & all things otaku ~ you might just be tuning his little brain for a future career as an audio/visual artist or both ... particularly in the otakusphere ~ so that's always a great thing in my opinion. Who knows he might also like formula or rally racing as a result & be the next Schumacher or Colin McRae! ohmy.gif

The only thing I'd never intentionally show a child is straight-up hentai or doujinshi ... I mean kids are supposed to discover that shiz by themselves & having a parent push cartoon-boobies would be just as weird as trying to get 'em to smoke the wacky tobacky with you laugh.gif derp.gif ~

So yeah welcome to the forum. Initial D's an underrated franchise ~ there's nothing wrong with letting a kid see it ... just like letting 'em watch John Wick 2 or some rated R flick. It's not triple-x softcore Playboy, just entertainment. If you show your little tyke your own passion for Initial D and all of the themes in the anime ~ like cars, music, racing technique, Japan, etc etc ... I think he'll learn from your own example, rather than whatever an anime says.

If his dad's a nice upstanding geek that's into anime ~ most likely he'll also grow-up to be a nice upstanding geek that's into anime too! online2long.gif

Probably not the right time to go on the xiao tangent. There's saying what needs to be said but in a comical way, and then there's going off topic and inserting personal stuff to make an irrelevant point. Come on man, I know you're better than that.

Initial D is for teens and thus, regarding the anime or manga, should best be left to kids 12+ in my opinion. Younger kids wont have the patience for it as well I think.
Too many words, not enough action.

The arcade games are fine if you're able to get hold of a used cabinet.

Theres plenty of other ways to introduce kids to cars, case in point, the movie Cars.
If its specifically Japanese cars, watch old D1GP drifting footage together. Colorful cars and big rooster tails, that will blow their minds.

I also forwarded the thread to our very own Honda_GC2, who works as a teacher and has probably introduced ID to some kids, albeit much older. Her opinion would be nice here.

Ditto on Honda's input on the thread, a secondary educator's insight would be highly interesting! ohmy.gif

Aw you guys remember that I exist! That's sweet of you.

Like sensation! and xiao mentioned, I work at a high school. Last year during student work time and breaks I'd play a little eurobeat here and there. One of my kids recognized it and silently acknowledged that I was a huge loser. We had a brief conversation about Initial D and how cool cars were. But I wasn't the one who showed him. He found it by himself recently while browsing Youtube or Netflix. This year I have a kid who occasionally wears shirts with the Nismo logo or an R32. I always comment on the shirt and the first time I saw it, I mentioned that I had a friend who owned one and that I've ridden in one before. Needless to say, he was jealous.

Currently I drive a Subaru Impreza with RedSuns decals on the sides reminiscent of the cars in the show. I teach physics and while doing my thermodynamics unit I talk about cars and their engines as heat systems and mechanics. Very interesting stuff as my students get way into it. It all culminates into us taking a field trip to the parking lot to look at engine bays and the different configurations of various cars. I had a few students this year recognize the decal and they snapped a couple of pictures of the car to show their other dorky friends.

All in all, I think Initial D is definitely something a teen would be into. It just fits into the timeline of adolescent development where cars are cool machines that they are in the presence of every day, but they can't OPERATE them just yet. Is a neat commodity that they don't have access to and those teens who can drive are viewed as gods and harbingers of fast food and rides to the mall. I don't think there are enough raw action scenes for a 4.5 year old to be interested in, but then again I don't know the child personally and I've seen kids who are into nature documentaries at the young age of 3. It's great if your kid is into Initial D but it would be a good idea to remind them that street racing like the events depicted in the show are totally illegal and driving like that anywhere is an incredibly bad idea.

About the student wearing the NISMO shirt ~ I find anecdotes like that super interesting Honda! ohmy.gif

You're totally right, someone really young doesn't know that driving like that is illegal & dangerous and might get you in trouble with the law let alone injure somebody.

And yeah ~ maybe another anime might be more suitable for a 4½ year old. I mean I've showed 4th & 3rd Stage to my little cousins that are around 8 y/o ... and they all think it's extremely boring & would rather watch One Piece or Tokyo Ghoul haha derp.gif

This was a while ago but one of them, Eden the lil gurl & smartest of the bunch, mentioned that the music was like Skrillex but she still didn't like it laugh.gif ... I guess Initial D would range somewhere in the younger spectrum of the Seinen age category.

But I find that student that spoke about the R32 interesting cause I tend to strike conversations with random strangers when I overhear someone talking about anything drift related. 2 weeks ago before Umu came down to where I live, I was buying little rose earrings at Walmart ... and two of the guys stocking jewelry were saying something about S13's and tires and YouTube and good RWD cars. Me being the dumb guy that can't shut his mouth or mind his own business ~ politely asked the one with the long hair "You guys like drifting...? ohmy.gif" Immediately the employee's face lit up & we started talking drifting.

I started the convo with Go Pro's and 60 fps for YouTube then veered it to more hardcore things like left foot breaking/heel & toe/and obscure chassis codes like the S15 & the FN2. And surprisingly we hit it off & had a sweet conversation. These kids were about 18/19 and were just barely starting their own YT channel & were basically brainstorming ideas about what cool angles & locations to do drift-takes...

When I brought up Initial D at towards the end of the conversation. I could see them physically holding themselves from face-palming & just wanting to leave ... if I'd brought up Eurobeat ~ they might've just all out ROLF'd & actually left. So I ended the conversation & told the 1st guy to send me an e-mail once the YT channel is up & going so I could sub. & they were pretty thrilled ~ laugh.gif

But yeah sorry about the tangent ~ you find closet drift and/or anime/car enthusiasts everywhere lol ohmy.gif

Thanks for the inputs. I was thinking more along the lines of "will he like it" vs. "is it too mature for him", but I guess like Honda says, that's case by case. I was just hoping someone on here had tried it and could post up results.

I too drive a WRX, a 2017 that I custom ordered last summer (one of the first '17s off the line). I thought about nicknaming it Bunta, but it's the wrong generation, wrong color, too many doors, and not an STi...lol. I previously have owned a Evo IX. That thing was stupid fast. 412hp to the wheels, ran 11's in our thin atmosphere. Could 4 wheel drift around corners. It was hilarious. I briefly debated putting an Emperor sticker on it, but it was bright friggen red, so it already didn't match their cars.

On the R-32 GT-R thing, I swore to myself that in 2014 I would buy one of the first 89's 100% legally imported to America. I stalled a bit, thinking the initial price surge would drop down. Well, it hasn't. For the price of a decent standard GT-R now, I could've bought a nice NISMO back then. Prices are still going up, and I don't understand it! Every year there are more cars to choose from, and yet the demand seems to be increasing faster than that (law of supply and demand). I just don't get it. At this point, I'm debating on waiting for an R-34, but who knows how much those will go for...

I've test driven a IX before ... I wanted to toss that thing around traffic lights just by how peppy it felt laugh.gif but alas the salesman was sitting shotgun & I'm not that carzy train lol derp.gif

If it wasn't for the way its boxy aesthetic looked ~ that'd totally be my dream-car instead of the BRZed / FR-S wub.gif

haha laugh.gif ~

I think the BRZed STi in the AU parallax dimensional thread of reality should be 4WD | 1500 lbs | RR layout | have a Porsché emblem | be 100% carbon fiber | make 555 bhp | and cost 1500 USD user posted image ...

Some say this is an Initial Dream awesome.gif ~

I wish I'd had CG2 as one of my physics teachers.

Anyway, I think 4.5 years old might be a little too young for Initial D. As relatively clean as the content is, it still revolves around illegal street racing, and things would probably get a little weird too when you get to the scene of Takumi and Itsuki seeing under Natsuki's skirt. It focuses a lot on technical stuff as well, and as mentioned, it also takes a while for things to happen in that show - stuff that may or may not put off some kids.
I don't think I'd personally introduce Initial D to a kid that young, but if you think your kid's ready for all that, then go for it.

As for whether he'd like it: I remember getting into Initial D in my early teens and seeing a few eps of Fourth Stage on youtube with two other kids, one of them younger than me (thinking 7 or older).
The young one wasn't that into the early eps because the racing in Initial D is relatively subdued (no huge jumps and nitrous boosts and cars constantly ramming into each other), but he thought the blind attack in the race against Tomoyuki was awesome. And that's as far as we watched on the crappy internet available here back then.
If your kid doesn't need his racing action to look like a Hotwheels game, then he probably would like some of it.

To be fair, the anime severely waters these parts down. You could just fast forward briefly when Mako blatantly tells Iketani about giving her virginity to him and nothing of value would be lost. It's not like he cashes in on the deal.

I've had Initial D running in the background when younger relatives came to the house, and they liked the racing scenes but not the talking scenes (which is most of the series). Don't expect anybody below the teenage years to care much about it, unless they've been raised to really like cars. Kids like flashy stuff and catchy music, so maybe Battle Stage is a good way to introduce them to the series while skipping all the "boring stuff".

I have AAA stickers on my truck because I'm not on a racing team and am 30. awesome.gif
