My main tool is using PT SAI with a Bamboo tablet. Each comission does take a while [1-5 days, depending on my schedule] but each piece is made just for you! ^^

what do you do to keep up your talent?

do draw random things? or have you been drawign a series of anyhting?

Currently I have Midnight Drifter giving me a bunch of requests. The last 2 dudes I drew were for him. I previously done work on different types of things, like hot girls in quicksand/damsels in distress and all that jazz, and several action poses, and automobiles. :3
Pretty much, what I do to keep up my skill? I keep drawing and experimenting with coloring with different art programs. I've got a Wacom Bamboo tablet that I use to draw on the computer, and sometimes I even do little sketches and doodles on paper. All I do is practice more. ^^

ive wanted one of those since i started working at bestbuy 2 years ago, that and a racing wheel for video games.

non-mine money issues cancled both dreams. sucks cause those pads arent too expensive.

What, the Bamboo? I like them, it's just a shame their stylus pens are fockin' balls expensive. ;;;
Sometime down the road I would like to get either a bigger one, or an actual DESK to do all of my work at.
Thinking about it, the Bamboo Craft does seem appealing, simply for the 'hands on' factor. I don't like having to alternate between tablet and laptop touchpad to move images around.

If you can spare the cost at any given point, skip the Bamboo and go straight on to the Intuos.

Seriously.

I've had an Intuos2 6x8 since 2004 - closing in on 7 years - and have only replaced the pen once. It's still going strong, and is STILL more sensitive and feature-packed than a Bamboo.

The Intuos series tablet is a device that you only retire after you've accidentally destroyed it. If you've never tried one... DOOOOO EEEEET

What do you think of the new Intuos4 series? Worth the extra price premium over the 3 series?

I'm still on the Intuos2 and have dabbled with the Intuos3 with GREAT SUCCESS. Not yet had a chance to play with a 4 as no one seems to want to buy one. Whether that's due to the recession or, as you say, price premium...who knows.

Myself I'd love to upgrade to an Intuos3 at work, keep my old 2 at home for art... an Intuos4 would be even better but beggars can't be choosers IMO the main features of the Intuos sit right in the middle of the comfort zone of any skilled or professional user; you'll never feel the need to upgrade aside from sensitivity alone. Finding someone able to find limitations in it as a tablet will be a challenge.

And the commonly-held idea that 'I don't need an Intuos because I'm not a professional user, just an artist' is bollocks. I do both; and I abuse the I2 far, FAR more when doing art as opposed to graphic design.

So as far as a regular user is concerned, you'd recommend an Intuos3?

I'd even go as far as to say, if you can get a second-hand Intuos2 in good condition with all its extras, do it. You will probably need a new pen though, which they still manufacture - the nibs are getting on for 7 years old now, and can become unreliable. Fixed with new stylus. A bargain would be to get a tablet where the owner has farked or lost the pen, as that + new pen will be cheaper than an Intuos3.

However if you like new things, the Intuos3 is twice as sensitive as the 2 and you won't outgrow it. So there are the options - second-hand 2, or new 3 (which are still sold).

Only if you're feeling flash would you need an Intuos4.

Whatever Intuos you purchase you won't regret it, is all I can say. Any choice is a safe choice.

Furthermore: if you are simply replacing your mouse (tablets can help if you get RSI), you only really need a 4x5. They are very portable. If you're doing art or design, of any kind, you'll be happier with a 6x8 as you have the real-estate to do bigger drags.

I was looking at a 8 x 11, but basically wanted to confirm where the point of "you get what you pay for" ends realistically for an average user. Thanks for all your input.

8x11... holy crikey. Do you do CAD drawings or something technical as a job?

The 'average user' has no real use for a huge tablet, so I'm guessing you're not actually an 'average' user?

That would be the main application, to be honest.

I can see why you were questioning the value of the 4 vs the 3. The smaller ones it's a 'meh', but if you're looking at a football field of a tablet...by crikey, yeah, the price difference is going to be astronomical. You'll derive no major benefit from getting the newer one there I suspect.
