Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Announcement Board > Server Migration (2011-11-01)

Posted by: Perry Oct 25 2011, 11:14 PM
As some of you have probably heard, the plan to switch to a new host had been well underway for the past few months. Why are we changing server you ask? Well, forums activities had declined dramatically since mid-2010. There just aren't much traffic hitting the forums with this long drought of Initial D news. At $25 per month for server fee, our funding dries up rather quickly despite many of your generous donations. As a result, I approached our host thewird to negotiate for a better rate. However, that fell right through. The rate remained at $25/mo. despite the decline of bandwidth usage.

As a last resort, I started looking for a different host that offers the same service with a smaller price tag. At last I found it two months ago. At $15 per month, the new host offers the same service with unmetered webspace and bandwidth. The most important thing of all is that it includes a VPS all in the price of $15/mo. Having a VPS basically grant us access to have features such as the radio and TV server that you all enjoyed all these years.

With that said, Initial D World will end her https://idforums.net/index.php?showtopic=27846 with WDServer (thewird) Hosting come next Tuesday, November 1st, 2011. It had been a real pleasure to work alongside with thewird whenever there was a problem with the server. Here's to hope the new server will be as good as this one! I will keep you all posted on the server migration. Please check back for more info.

  • Tuesday November 1st, 2011 08:00 AM (Pacific Time) - DNS change initiated.
  • Wednesday November 2nd, 2011 11:00 PM (Pacific Time) - DNS propagation completed, forums re-open.

So I guess we'll all be in the FB or IRC chat bullshitting while this takes effect.

Will there be any new features or anything to come with the migration?

Will IDW be down during the migration? =(

Oops, I see the times at the bottom, nevermind. That's gonna suck, maybe its time I Facebook...

EDIT: For stooopidity.

forgive my lack of familiarity if this has already been covered but, have donations ever been requested? I wouldn't mind chipping in a few bucks. I suspect that if even a small percentage of the users here feel similarly it would be pretty easy to add some extra server funds. I realize this move is already set to happen but, it couldn't hurt to have the funds on hand for the future, especially if and when a fifth series of the anime starts to look more likely to release.

IDW has always accepted donations. We had a fundraiser earlier this year to help Perry out since he was down to paying for the site from his own pockets, but that money is getting close to drying up as well, so feel free to chip in with what you can. happy.gif

There will not be any new features unfortunately. The whole idea was to keep all the features we have when we move to a new server with cheaper price tag. I am grateful the new server lets us have radio and TV server. Though, one thing that needs to be mention is the radio server. It will be upgraded to SHOUTcast V2, which offers the far more superior audio AAC with less bandwidth / memories usage. DJ Panel will likely to be integrated in the User CP, for more streamlined DJ experience.

That's all I can think of right now. smile.gif

Having the DJ Panel integrated will be a huge step. Considering my username on the panel is not the same as on IDW, it could also have some hiccups.

I think it's great that we are getting a new server! But I have one question, after the transfer will the forum format change? Another board that I used to frequent years ago exchanged hands quite a few times while I was there and every single time they would get a new host the entire website would change. It annoyed the crap out of me so I left.

IDW hasn't changed the entire time I've been here. It's still the same old theme it's always been, with minor little changes here and there to makes things smoother. Don't worry about things changing--Perry's great with that sort of thing. happy.gif

I like how Perry mentioned the video stream when nobody has used it in ages. That shit is caked with dust, hidden in the back of a storage closet full of other forgotten relics like /idw/, the Triad, that AIM chat room, countless mod badge designs, TPS reports, and the 2011 IDW Semi-Annual Awards code.

Someone hasn't been around for Eronight the past few weeks. Come on man, I've done a bunch of reviews and am doing another next Friday! laugh.gif

You know I've been distracted. wink2.gif

$120 a year is significant savings, so moving the server is a good call.

Posted by: Saint Oct 31 2011, 08:10 AM
Looks like move is coming soon.

I'll be ronery till then... sad.gif

Posted by: Tessou Oct 31 2011, 09:11 AM
Join the damned facebook group, then! We're always looking for more conversations there.

Posted by: Saint Oct 31 2011, 09:51 AM
Already did.

Just that there's nothing much I can talk there. I enjoy the occasional hot girl pics, though. Lol.

DNS propagation varies from ISP to ISP. Looks like some of the major ISPs in California has already refreshed their DNS list and has started pointing to the new server. For the rest of the world, give it another 24 hours so everyone will be on the same page. smile.gif

Yeah, its back! And I'm in east coast Canada happy.gif.

Posted by: Meteor Nov 2 2011, 12:38 AM
Thought I'd have to wait around 24 hours or more from when the move began, but I'm already getting access. Didn't expect that, considering where I live.

Congrats on the move btw.

ETA for Radio Broadcast has been pushed back to tomorrow until I can reduce the memory footprint. There will be an update with this.

Posted by: Saint Nov 2 2011, 03:28 AM
Gee, that was fast.

Posted by: DigiBunny Nov 2 2011, 05:10 AM
And we're back! Here I was wondering if the URL would change.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled casual pace.

Posted by: Spaz Nov 2 2011, 06:23 AM
Anyone on Quest/CenturyLink or any of there subsidiaries should have access now.

Posted by: Tessou Nov 2 2011, 07:22 AM
I barely even noticed the changeover... was out at work all day, then out with Cecilia pretty much all night. By the time I woke up this morning, it was active again.

Posted by: THE_HONDA_CG2 Nov 2 2011, 10:45 PM
Wow that was pretty fast. I thought this was going to take a super long time! Good job Perry!

Posted by: Perry Nov 4 2011, 02:10 AM
The migration has been a success. We are still ironing out the kinks with the new server. For the most parts, the Radio Broadcast is back online! It is now running on SHOUTcast v2 with AAC streaming instead of MP3. Tune in and check out the superior audio quality today! smile.gif

Posted by: Nomake Wan Nov 4 2011, 02:13 AM
Thanks for all the hard work, Perry!

The TV server is also working, which is to be expected since it didn't undergo any changes.

We hope that in the near future, our new radio server will have even more wonderful features like automatic podcasting, album art, live lyrics and other fun things. For now, we do have it running without any problems, so that's good!

Once again, congratulations on a successful move! happy.gif
