We've got the people who only know anime, are big fans of Eurobeat, and those who know cars better than the back of their hand. Since you want to learn more about cars, you should definitely check out our Automotive section. Automotive Discussion is where you'll find build/maintenance threads of our members (including myself) and just general discussion of what's going on in the automotive world. Technical Discussion are for the more specific questions you may have. If you have a car to work on, you'll be able to absorb things more quickly. I'm a full time college student as well with a part time job, so I know how fast it can deplete your wallet. Still, if you're truly interested in learning, you have to get your hands dirty and make the sacrifices. A good place to start is, like you said, maintenance. Fluid changes, tires, wheel alignment... As a car owner, you'll see these things a lot. Maintenance is what keeps your car from breaking down as often; skimp on this, and it can get costly. After that, choose a focus to start out with. Since car modifications can get costly, what I'm currently working on is my driving skills, specifically braking. Too many people believe they're the greatest driver on the road. As soon as you go to the track and try out autocross, drifting, or another automotive event, you'll find that there are many holes in your ability to control a car. That's about all that I can say. Again, welcome to IDW, and enjoy your time here. This post has been edited by Kiroshino on Jan 3 2011, 07:17 AM |

Nonsense, I did plenty of learning in the years before I bought my own car. You just have to go out and drive a bunch of stuff to find something you really like. And when you drive that car you'll know. Trust me.

Ditto. Take your time. Don't be like me who bought a car out of impatience. Find a car you like, join the community (if it exists), and do some research. If after all that you still like the car and have a decent idea of what you'd be getting into, make the leap. Something to consider: a car with a decent aftermarket and supporting community makes things much easier to find and deal with.

There is a forum for just about every model (and generation) of popular car out there. I wouldn't have purchased my original MR2 or 300ZX Z32 without doing some research and asking questions to the communities that know the cars. |

But at the same time, you can get lucky. My old Talon was a great example of that, I technically made that purchase from 200 miles away without seeing the car in person after someone else checked it out for me. But I still knew it was what I wanted after months of research

^This. I shot myself in the foot when I bought the XT6, but does that mean I can't enjoy it? No. It just means I have to fag a part (or parts) if I wanted to turbocharge it or such. Like they said: Something reasonably sturdy with a nice aftermarket and community range.
