Yeah, saw the BDMVs hit but no matter how much I love Eva, 30GB for a movie is excessive. Especially since I don't have BDRs laying around to burn onto anyway.

What I don't get is why a bunch of people released different versions of episode 1. Come on guys, the good stuff is in episode 2! Hurry it up! laugh2.gif

Did see a rip of the OP. I hope it's just a poor encode on the encoder's side, but the white balance seemed way off to me. Will wait until a proper group releases something to do a proper check.

Do you mean a bunch of different groups releasing episode 1 or a bunch of groups, releasing different versions of episode 1? If the former, it's probably just everyone scrambling for some of the spotlight. If the latter, maybe the different versions are the different versions included in the box set (TV broadcast version and original master transfer).

Why would they include an inferior version of something that was taken from the existing master on the disc?

The former, the former. As far as I can tell everyone's jumping on the very same BDMV and doing the exact same thing. They all got ep1 out SUPAFAHST but then...nothing.

When a new Evangelion release rears its head I always use Episode 2 to test with, so this is kinda irritating, haha.

2D4U have been the standard for the old DVD rips, and they're doing the BDs, so they might come out on top again.

Encode of EoE is out. Flipping through it before I leave for class, I notice some odd horizontal tearing. I really didn't want to download 30GB of BDMV but I might have to at this rate to see if the problem is on the source or encode end...

Would suck if the source had tearing. I mean this is supposed to be a film transfer so there shouldn't be any digital artifacts like that.

EDIT: Screenshots of an example below.

(You'll have to open both in a tab and flip between the tabs; stupid IDW's resize filter broke the ability to see them side by side)

EDIT 2: So after watching it some more, I ran across this interesting shot about the "Third Impact," or rather NERV's sensor data about the start of the Third Impact.

I guess they figured that back then no one would ever see this stuff...but it's 2015, and we totally did, so here's the actual game that the code shown here is from awesome.gif :

hahaha, nice catch! Guess now we know what Gainax was doing when they weren't working... I'm surprised given the individual members' background, they never made a little 'cade game or something. I mean, look at Anno and Sadamoto making Nadia shorts for Kenichi Sonoda's Chosen Ame doujin years ago.

Well, someone finally encoded Episode 2 in a not-hard-drive-destroying filesize so I gave it a look. For the most part I'm pretty pleased by the transfer. It seems they're using a new audio track, but I suppose it could be because it's been so many years since I saw the original that I don't remember all of these sound effects and background noises. Or it could be like the Nadesico BDs and I'm spot-on. I'd have to go back and check my DVDs but I don't have them on me at the moment.

The really good news is that it turns out the OP I watched earlier really was a shitty encode. The white balance in the OP of this episode is much closer to correct, so much so that it's obvious that the previous encoder went a little overboard with filters. In using almost no filtering, this time around it looks much, much better.

There are still a few things that bother me, like scenes that have quality drops unlike the rest of the sequence and bits where there seems to be a little bit of judder or tearing to my eye, but like I said...a mostly positive experience. Let's do some screenshots, starting off with one of the lackluster shots of the episode and moving on to some of the more impressive.
