Looks gewd! ♥ Don't forget to rip it & do a comparison with the Funimation releases to see which one's better! 仲間レインさんよぅ~ ✌️ |

There are no Japanese HD masters for anything besides Third Stage, Fifth Stage and Final Stage. The HD release in Japan for First, Second and Fourth Stage was simply an upscaled and warpsharped version of the SD masters. |

Meteor is right, and that's sad. Still, it's good to know they are promoting Initial D again. |

They could've gotten the master animation directly from OB Planning no? --- --- --- Edit: As in ... re-mastered just for France? (highly doubtful) Still, do a comparison or up it to nyaa to see how it fares Rainx0rz-kun ? |

I will post screenshots once i received it. I asked them if they will release the 3rd and 4th stage in HD, 5th and Final Stage. Plus, if they will finish the manga to the 48th volume. I just received "it's was planned", but for the manga or the anime ? |

No. Ignoring the fact that OB Planning is simply a production company rather than an anime studio and is also possibly dead at this point (they haven't been credited with anything Initial D in years), the original film masters for First Stage have simply been lost to time. They were either thrown out to clear up space in some building somewhere, or they're sitting alongside a bunch of other film masters that people have lost track of. If Avex had any sort of access to the film masters, they would've simply scanned those for the Japanese BD release instead of going with that horrendously ugly upscale. Also, Second Stage was a fully digital production and was not shot onto film. As with every other TV anime from the SD digital animation era, an HD master was literally never made. |

This. Exactly this. Funimation wasn't able to even get the original sound mix for First Stage because it was lost/destroyed, hence they had to add their own BGM in certain places. Dubbing the series and syncing music and SFX had to be done pretty much from scratch. |

★ naruhodooo~ This reminds me of the story of an old anime blogger who went dumpster diving at the old Sunrise production building and found gems upon gems of Gundam memorabilia → [Link] Seems once anime companies go the way of the dodo, not even the most ardent licensing will resuscitate 'em from the grave. So the original Initial D animation is just lost in the sands of time & this French release will just be an upscale like the rest ... dang. Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 600. I'm not convinced that film masters for these series ever actually existed. Lots of series from the era were mastered onto VHS instead. While some higher-budget shows would film on 35mm and then master to VHS (Star Trek: The Next Generation), animation like Initial D is a digital/analog composite and most likely the digital bits were lost a long time ago and the analog bits, well, who knows. Essentially you'd have to recreate the whole thing from scratch and that won't happen, so it's likely that VHS masters are the only thing Avex had to work with. |

I'm just regurgitating what Funi customer service told me years ago. You're probably right about actual film masters never existing in the first place. |

Hey Rain197 I have question you get blu-ray version from your country. and how look this is better than japanese PIT1? |

So the film masters being lost explains everything. Well, let's just hope that France can release Third Stage in Blu-Ray glory as well! |
