Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Computers and Technologies > autorun.inf.vir?

So I was checking out my My Computer folder, and I swear I never seen this before. Does the .vir mean it's a virus?

I followed these steps:

1. Go to command prompt.
2. Type CD\ in drive C to go the root directory
3. Type DIR /AH and press ENTER key. This will display all hidden files in your drive C
4. If you see a file AUTORUN.INF and a folder Recycled, then your system is infected.
5. Try doing this to your USB drive and check if your USB stick contains the same folder and AUTORUN.INF, if it does then your system is really infected..

Nothing came up in my command prompt. So does that mean I'm safe?

Wouldn't it be a .exe if it was an executable file though?

Wut.

I pray those instructions had variations for other versions of Windows because that is wholly inaccurate. For instance, while that may be a cause for concern in Vista or 7 (because those files are foreign to those OS), in XP such a result would be normal. Not to mention you can view such hidden files without any command prompt trickery by just setting your folder view settings to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and unticking "Hide protected operating system files."

I'm not sure what exactly those instructions were for bit it sounds...off.
