ummm juz wanted to know y almost every character in initial d wears a new balance shoe.. does new balance really make great racing shoes? or are they sponsors of initial d? or mayb new balance sneakers are popular in japan? i cant help but notice since im kinda a shoe fanatic..
Posted by: babba-r32 Jun 6 2005, 05:10 AM
| i think its shigeno's preferance.
BTW, new balance are awsome. have two pairs.
Posted by: an2w3r Jun 6 2005, 05:18 AM

Posted by: 4WD Jun 6 2005, 09:26 AM
I prefer Kyoichi-style boots
Posted by: BOZZ Jun 6 2005, 10:31 AM
I am not sure if it is preference or not, but at least in the anime I think the shoes were based on sponsorships from the shoe company, it's why we see Nikes in Third Stage...
Posted by: WRX Jun 6 2005, 10:51 AM
I got 2 pairs of new balance.I use them for running and stuff. It's comfortable and light for me.
Posted by: Type R Jun 6 2005, 12:44 PM
yea if u watch the 1st stage episodes u see the N emblem on the side of the shoe. I wear them as well, not because they're in the show, but because they're really comfortable and i can easily feel the clutch when i drive.
Posted by: sideways Jun 6 2005, 12:48 PM
I used to wear steel toed shoes (steel insert on the inside) but for driving i have to wear something else, cant feel the pedals as well- and since the bottom is really thick its hard to heel-toe properly at all. SO my other shoes be vans. Im not picky about shoes really, theyve always been black- black shoes go with anything.
Posted by: MAD MAX Jun 6 2005, 02:58 PM
I have a nice pair of NB 574. They're damn great. Comfortable, well-made and beautiful.
Posted by: Noy Jun 6 2005, 05:37 PM
I own a pair of New Balance shoes too, they're great for driving and walking long distances, not to mention jogging or running... However, once you've tried specially designed racing shoes for driving, the kind that you see on those Best Motoring Videos, its totally different, once you've used them, you can't use anything less...
Posted by: MyName Jun 6 2005, 07:49 PM
Can I get a link for a picture of those shoes?
Posted by: Sexy_Knights Jun 6 2005, 08:43 PM

Posted by: KodamaSpirit Jun 6 2005, 09:31 PM

Posted by: Kerxn Jun 6 2005, 09:38 PM

Posted by: Culverin Jun 30 2005, 04:15 PM
| i actually sell footwear as my job.
we carry quite a few new balance shoes.
in my professional opinion. they are good shoes, good cushion. but they're general foot model they base most of their shoes on doesn't seem to fit us asians very well. Vancouver has soooo many of us.
it's best to go to the local New Balance store to find the perfect width for fore-foot and heel.
but Asics are better.
best shoes i've ever owned. and i own a pair of $160 new balance shoes...
Posted by: Leke Jun 30 2005, 04:32 PM
| Can you people really tell which brand of shoes those cartoon characters wear?
Im amased. Must be pretty useful information..
Posted by: city_hunter Jul 2 2005, 07:27 AM
I'm impressed by u guys... able to notice the type of shoes the characters wear... Sneakers seem to be a better option coz they portray a "street racer" image... I wonder what kind of footwear professional racers put on......
Posted by: Gold_Ultima Jul 2 2005, 06:11 PM
It's pretty obvious what they wear. With all the foot shots when they accel, brake and shift you see the feet a lot. It's also hard to miss the big N on the side of every shoe in the show practicly.
Posted by: driftheory Jul 2 2005, 06:14 PM
| yeah even bunta wears new balance. i take a screenshot for you to see.
this is in Episode 24 of First stage when he is driving with Yuichi

Posted by: 2501 Jul 12 2005, 08:24 PM
Thats funny... I never noticed that. I wear newbalance because I have 15's and my feet are too damn big.
Posted by: statikjolt Jul 13 2005, 12:19 AM
Lol...I have one pair of those, one in red, and one in gray. They are great driving shoes if you don't have aftermarket pedals with holes in them. Otherwise, the bottom of the New balances get caught and its harder to switch feet. . So I decided to get some speedwells instead http://www.speedwellfootwear.com/store/pro...&cat=249&page=1
Posted by: EA99 Jul 13 2005, 03:54 AM

| New Balance shoes are great i have a pair for jogging +
I'm pretty sure they're the only running shoes made in america.
Why would an american shoe company use product placement in a japaneese TV show?
Posted by: Nakzters Aug 17 2005, 10:15 AM
I usualy use converse sneakers or old scool vans theyr very light and comfy when driving

Posted by: Civicnote Apr 26 2008, 08:50 PM
I wear a very similar pair, just different material.
I've tried many shoes over the years, from Adidas, to Reebok, to Vans, and now to New Balance. I never really liked Nike shoes (or their company for the matter). The New Balances' are by far the most comfy shoes i've had. And yes, you can feel the clutch great with them. And yea, i have noticed how the characters in Initial D have different NB shoes. My next set are brown.
The only ones i've really noticed were Takumi's (White/Black, Panda colored!), Bunta (Orange), Daiki (Brown), and i want to say Kenta had Red ones in First Stage. But don't quote me on that, i'm not sure.
Posted by: Cappuccino, 2 sugars Apr 27 2008, 12:14 AM
yeah i must admit i wear these too. they are great for running and driving...point A to point B shoes lol

Way to revive a three-year-old thread. :kyon: Shoes for the win, I guess. So, do you drift better with them on?
Posted by: Tessou Apr 27 2008, 01:25 AM
| It's a known fact that wearing shoes like the ones in the series will give you a +10hp bonus. FACT.
Also, this is stupid.
Posted by: BOZZ Apr 27 2008, 05:39 AM
Funny that someone necro'd this thread, when I was going to post up elsewhere that I got myself a pair of NBs too... They're damn comfortable!
Posted by: bROCKoLEE Apr 27 2008, 09:47 PM
Don't forget that red ones go faster too. Red NBs = Double the boost! lol =P
Posted by: Nomake Wan Apr 27 2008, 10:12 PM
WRONG! Jeez, how can you be a mod of Anime and not know that red makes you THREE TIMES AS FAST?
Posted by: BOZZ May 2 2008, 08:43 PM
Ha ha... I wouldn't have caught that had I not seen the keyword there haha...
Man, maybe I should have gotten myself a pair that were red rather than green (lime greenish) and white...
Posted by: Mishiro May 9 2008, 08:03 AM
Good day Natsushima here! I quite notice that... I even talk to my friends about wearing New Balance when we go out for ID, they envy it ; and YES it is comfortable, even if my butt is so sore sitting for hours, my feet are still good to go.
Posted by: wangan_sti May 19 2008, 02:20 AM
I know 574 r great driving shoes ( i mean it), but r dunks gud as well. I saw Tak (Takumi) wearing them in third stage. Yeah i know there heavy, but r they still gud at least.
Posted by: djmisio85 May 19 2008, 06:55 PM
Yep pumas are the best, I have 2 pairs
Flameproof, and go with my car (ok its not a 7 but still an evo)
Posted by: wangan_sti May 19 2008, 10:18 PM
| ^ dont forget goodyear addidas
anyway u think dunks r gud as well, well Tak (Takumi) wore them in 3rd stage right?

its all about japanese streetwear culture, new balances were big back in the day
not to mention street wear and street racing go hand in hand ie the sneakers
ya thats right
i just necroed this thread
Posted by: Trasher_54 Dec 21 2009, 05:38 PM
| Takumi and Bunta were the only characters that I know wearing the NB shoes. And their shoes suit them well.
I have yet to find the orange ones that Bunta wears in the first stage.
Posted by: RSanYon Dec 31 2009, 06:02 PM
Didn't Mako Sato wear New Balances as her "racing shoes" in First Stage? Yeah I sport some NBs, 1 pair, but I mainly buy Vans (shoes).
Posted by: stormfox Dec 31 2009, 06:47 PM
| Takumi wears New Balance too...
actually i like New Balance shoes... somehow the sole design fits me better than Nike, Reebok and the likes...
Posted by: zerosktz Apr 10 2010, 08:24 PM
| this is the closest I've been able to find to Takumi's shoe in First Stage
other than the black laces, it's pretty spot on. and if you're really hardcore for the authentic takumi look, all you'd have to do is buy some spare white laces and put them on.
here's an image from 1st stage (from the intro) for reference
these are new balance classics 525s. the thing is this color scheme seems kinda rare too find now a days. good luck guys.
Posted by: TruenoJoe Jun 25 2010, 11:13 PM
wow i didn't notice that either! wtf? I used to hate new balance cuz I thought they were crappy brands. I better start wearing them. haha.
Posted by: touge_rider Sep 25 2011, 10:06 PM
Get a load of this:
Looks similar to Takumi's shoes form Fourth Stage:

I like the Nike Air Prestige III, really nice shoes. Very similar to Initial D type of style
Posted by: BOZZ Nov 24 2011, 07:42 PM
I wonder what the model of New Balance that Takumi wore in the series.
Posted by: Banken Jan 6 2012, 07:23 AM
| Silly noobs, none of the characters actually used New Balances. They simply changed it from Nike's in the manga to (at the time) a generic "N," which probably wasn't even meant to appear be New Balances at the time. Just like all the fake sponsors on Ryosuke an Keisuke's cars.
I'm almost certainly the resemblance to the New Balance 574 is a coincidence. They have only been in Japan since 1989. Nine years. This is probably why they changed back to Nike's in Stage Three, which had a much bigger budget.
That said, I bought a pair forever and ever ago because of Initial D....hehe
Posted by: BOZZ Jan 12 2012, 08:59 PM
I think they might be inspired by them and there are quite a few New Balance shows with a simple N on them.
The fake sponsors on the cars are due to the animation studios not wanting to waste money to get the license to use them in their series.
Posted by: Banken Jan 15 2012, 01:52 AM
If they weren't going to put Greddy, Trueno, Monster etc, and all those other brand names, I'm pretty sure they aren't going to use New Balance on purpose.
Posted by: sprinter_tsuchiya Jan 15 2012, 01:24 PM
But the fact is that New Balance shoes are very popular in Japan.
Posted by: Lonely_Driver Jan 15 2012, 04:18 PM
wow, i'm looking for a new pair of sneakers, guess i'll look around for the 525's!
Posted by: Banken Jan 16 2012, 02:32 AM
| I havent seen that many people wearing NBs in Japan. Most runners wear Asics since its a Japanese brand. That, or one of the big brands. Nike, Adidas, etc.
Dunlop sells more shoes than NB does here, hehe.
Posted by: sprinter_tsuchiya Jan 19 2012, 03:03 PM
| Well, now I'm shocked. I recall quite people wearing New Balance shoes around the streets of Japan during my trip last summer.
I also noticed most of the sports stores were selling them, I asked to some employee of some ABC Mart and they even had some limited models for Japan of that brand. I know it because my friend bought ones.
Maybe it has to do with some specific regions or something...
Posted by: Banken Jan 22 2012, 04:41 PM
| At the very least I have never specifically noticed anyone wearing them.
They do sell them, but they are $$$$ here. Like, 575's cost over $100.
Posted by: Lonely_Driver Jun 16 2012, 02:01 PM
| I bought Bunta's shoes

Hello, guys. What shoes are these?
Posted by: Spaz Aug 5 2013, 07:06 AM
They very well may be, Asics use that kind of design on the side quite frequently from what I've seen. I've got a pair, super comfortable, but with the gel sole trying to drive in them was rough for the first week. I can heel-toe no problem even in slip-on dress shoes, and the Asics were a bitch to get used to. I love them now, but the first week was rough while the sole wore in.
Posted by: kyonpalm Aug 5 2013, 08:29 AM
I Iew Balance.
Posted by: RedsunsF1 Aug 5 2013, 08:43 AM
| I have never heard of new balance. As for racing I have been wanting to buy OMP which I have heard are very comfortable and great for racing.
Posted by: kyonpalm Aug 5 2013, 08:46 AM
Where do you live? Not being sarcastic, I'm honestly curious.
Posted by: RedsunsF1 Aug 5 2013, 08:53 AM
| It's cool.
I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. I might have heard it before I just don't remember.
Posted by: KRT94 Aug 5 2013, 10:33 PM
I think Takumi's shoes in Fifth Stage are Asics Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Black.
Posted by: kkullar Aug 19 2013, 04:03 PM
They look like an Adidas but with only 2 strips, maybe someone else can find a closer shoe to whats shown?
Oh right, might have to get a pair!
Looks very similar, well spotted
Posted by: Spaz Aug 21 2013, 08:44 AM
They're super comfy, but yeah, not cool in the car for a week or two initially.
I honestly haven't found anything I can't heel-toe my car in though, but I can't say I've ever tried barefoot. I blame the pedal layout for said unwarranted global success.
Posted by: kkullar Aug 21 2013, 03:38 PM
I've been doing more looking around and maybe there some sort of "Gola" shoe they use the 2 strips.

I know this is old but I don't really care. I think Takumi wears the NB 576 sneakers
Posted by: xiao May 4 2019, 09:30 PM
New Balance is a company that makes new sneakers ever year, whatever model Takumi & Bunta wore in the 90's, it's out of production in both the international & Japanese markets.
They continually remake shoes that look like their classic sneakers, so chances of finding a pair that looks like Takumi or Bunta's shoes is actually pretty good.
However, we'd have to personally ask Shigeno what the inspiration for their shoes was to know exactly what model sneaker it was.

I know this is old, but actually New Balance is pretty popular in Japan! Even they have official stores unlike other countries who New Balance is considered low quality brand.
At the end of the day is a trend...
