The thing I really liked about RE:TAKE was that it left everything alone. It made no effort to change anything that happened during both the TV series and End of Evangelion. I feel like it spat right in Anno's face and said, "Go ahead, have your lore. All we'll do is conclude it better than you ever could."

That was just brilliant.

...Then again, I could just like it because Asuka's my favorite character. I can't help but feel that Asuka's eyepatch in 3.0 was at least a nod to Kimigabuchi's RE:TAKE series.

Preview for 2.0 at the end of 1.0 didn't entirely match up with the actual 2.0 film either (surprise, surprise, change of heart during production again then too). So I'm taking this 4.0 preview with a grain of salt really lol. Ever since the I saw the end of 2.0 I've had this strange tingly feeling that they don't really know what they're doing with the story anymore lol

That's kind of forgiveable though. The Shin Kyoto Arc was because it's from Misao's viewpoint, so it's skewed horrendously by both her childish mind and the fact that she wasn't actually present for a good deal of the action. So in that sense, it's acceptable that both the TV version and OVA version exist--they're just differing viewpoints of the same history. EDIT: You can kind of think of it like 'Do You Remember Love' the Nanoha movies. They're all canon even though they're 'retellings', because they're retellings from the perspective of characters within the universe itself.

Well to be honest...

The space battle stuff was hilarious. Not that it was inaccurate, but that back at a hobby fest forever ago they announced an EVA-02' figure which was the re-entry shield plus the sniper rifle... except EVA-08 had the rifle, not EVA-02'. So one has to wonder where exactly these ideas come from. On top of that, we're supposed to buy that those little disc things are all mass-produced Evangelions based on the EVA-04 project. On top of that, despite being Evangelions they're all Blood Type Blue? Which brings me to the other point, actually. Blood Type Blue is an Angel. Adam is an Angel. So the comment Asuka makes about the Mk.09 being the 'Adams' vessel' would seem to suggest that NERV's Evangelions since 2.22 have all been based on the sample of Adam Kaji stole and really are only 'EVAs' by external appearance. They're made to look like traditional EVAs but at heart they're closer to being Angels. The Mk.06 seems to reinforce this theory. However, it doesn't quite explain what's going on with Shinji. He apparently has a 0.0000% sync ratio with EVA-01, yet has no problem whatsoever piloting EVA-13 all by himself. Does that mean he's fundamentally changed? Can he only sync with an Adam-based Evangelion? If we're to believe the fact that Asuka refers to her fellow Wille as 'Lilin' being because she and Mari were both 'changed' by their EVAs too, then why do they seem to have no problem piloting EVA-02 and EVA-08 which seem to be based on the older EVA series?

Too many questions. EVA 4.0, please wrap this up properly. Please.

Le me watching Movie 3 in a nutshell:

the blue blood types and Adam relationship. One of my main beefs recently (and I guess this film amplified it even more) was that the EVA's were all starting to get a little too absurd with all the supernatural things they were able to do (growing jet packs, four arms, another beast mode... really?). In 2.22, when unit 2 went all beast mode, I'm sure many thought it was the coolest thing ever but I was just like "man, this ain't even eva anymore" (and speaking of which how the hell did Mari even pilot it in the first place? Isn't Askua's mum suppose to be in that thing, meaning she's the only one who can pilot it? Rebuild vs Original differences perhaps? I don't think it was ever specifically mentioned in Rebuild). That jet pack thing I could let go, since it was supposedly Adam's Vessel which means it's special or whatever. This blue blood type business and being based of Adam and thus being more angels in EVA armour helps me stomach things a little more. On your other points, Mari, Shinji and Asuka don't age because apparently that's the curse of all Eva Pilots (something to do with LCL perhaps? dunno lol maybe it's not even related to blue blood types at all), but I think that's where the similarities between them end. Shinji is a rather special outlier in this case since he went all third impact mode whilst the closest Asuka and Mari have been are just beast mode so synchronization contamination could be playing a part? Which reminds me, if unit 02 was really a Lilith based Eva (I'm assuming older models were based of Lilith, but I havn't doubled checked so could be wrong), it couldn't have gotten it's beast mode abilities in 2.22 from Adam's blue blood type... (3.33 maybe since we don't know what the hell they've been doing in that 14 year gap) which brings me back to my original beef of Eva's starting to do absurd things, and the blue blood type copout won't work in this case.... *sigh* Dammit Eva, why the hell u always so full of holes?

I gave it some thought actually, and it occurred to me...

I don't think Asuka's mom is in EVA-02 in the Rebuild continuity. In fact I don't think anyone's mom is in any of the EVAs with the exception of EVA-01. I believe that the whole Yui-is-in-EVA-01 is in fact a fluke--in the Rebuild continuity, the accident with Yui was why the Entry Plug and things like the concept of 'plug depth' were created in the first place. They were so that humans could pilot EVAs without the danger of fusing with its core and becoming a non-human existence. Therefore, anyone could theoretically pilot any EVA. That's why Mari is seen piloting no less than three completely different models (including one that wasn't even tuned properly) and Asuka pilots two. In the TV continuity, there was the 'mommy-factor' which was why Touji was the pilot of EVA-03. In the movies, it wouldn't make sense for NERV to test EVA-03 with Asuka as the pilot if Touji's mom is in the EVA. Therefore, I must conclude that the only EVA with a 'mommy-factor' is EVA-01. However, that of course brings up the question of why Shinji and EVA-01 have a 0% sync ratio, and why the entire bridge crew of the Wunder are able to successfully synchronize with it. As to your point about the 'Curse of EVA', you're forgetting about Asuka's run-in with EVA-03. That's what injured her so badly and that's why she has the eyepatch. EVA-03 was infected by an Angel and she got ridiculously close to it. So it could be said that Asuka is part Angel, thus the eye. It would also explain why she refers to her compatriots as 'Lilin' as if she isn't one of them. Shinji transcended humanity and then was 'rebuilt' out of nothingness in the core of EVA-01 (which had already absorbed the core of an Angel during Near Third Impact), so he's probably something else entirely too. Which leaves Mari, who didn't come into direct contact with any Angels at least as far as what's on screen. It's possible that she came into contact with one in the 14-year time gap between 2.22 and 3.33, or it's possible that the angel-contact part of their existence is in fact separate from the 'Curse of EVA'. Until someone explains what exactly that curse is we can only theorize. As for your issue with Beast Mode, it should actually be fairly simple to clear up. Similar to the nonsense EVA-01 exhibited while berserk (both in 1.11 and 2.22), there are some things about the Evangelions that NERV never disclosed. At least some of the explanations in the TV series seem to fit here too, namely that the 'armor' of the Evangelions is more a 'limiter' than actual armor plating. They restrict the Evangelion to being a 'giant robot' rather than a 'false god'. Mari purging the armor plating and releasing the physical limiters on EVA-02 gave her abilities that would normally be beyond simple 'giant robot' status, but those abilities were part of the Evangelion to begin with. They're not a 'pattern blue' effect, they were built into the design. If they weren't, the software in the entry plug wouldn't have any idea how to activate it. Yet, as both Mari and Asuka have shown, the control software knows full well how to purge those limiters. Those are my theories, anyway.

Your explanations help provide much needed rationale and clarification for me although I still preferred it when Berserker mode was the extent of EVA's 'bullshitness' (if that's even a word lol). Now it's just like DBZ power levels and super saiyan forms. Always gotta keep one upping themselves each time.

Shinji's 0% sync rate with Eva-01 is indeed perplexing but there's always the possibility that Ristsuko may have just flat out lied to him. The WILLE crew were all clearly wary of letting Shinji pilot Eva again in fear of him setting off another impact, so why even run the risk by telling him that he could still pilot? It didn't really seem like they were in possession of unit 01 for very long either, not long enough to have even tested out the unit-01 engine on the Wunder anyway so I guess there's the added possibility that test results were faulty. And Unit 01 definitely activated in the opening sequences of the film, so it's not like it was totally out of the picture (but again, that was pre-Wunder so things could be different now that unit 01 got incorporated into the Wunder). I think someone else in the film echoed this comment why Shinji had a 0% sync ration despite it activating in Space as well if memory serves me right, but I can't remember exactly where and who. I could just be twisting scenes and facts around in my head unknowingly though lol On the 'mommy factor' as you've dubbed it. If that doesn't exist in Rebuild anymore, then that pretty much takes away the sole purpose of why the kids were chosen and needed in the first place. Anyone could be piloting the Evas. So there has to be something else to it. Perhaps maybe this Curse of EVA thing is meant to be it? In either cases and on a slightly related tangent, I'm leaning on the Curse of EVA being something else entirely unrelated to how Angel or 'godlike' the pilot is. Which fits in with Mari being just a simple normal pilot. The thing I find kind of puzzling about Mari is if she was really working for SEELE then why the sudden change of heart to WILLE in 3.33? Her loyalty in 2.22 must not have been that strong to SEELE then in that case or something major must have happened in that time skip. Hell who am I kidding, major shit probably did occur. Just they didn't bother explaining any of it.... =/ Seriously they didn't even bother with Kaiji at all this time around and it was bad enough he got downgraded to watermelon man in 2.22 when Mari jacked his role in giving Shinji motivation to pilot again after the dummy plug incident. Kaworu having to wait an extra 14 years before meeting Shinji cracks me up a little though. Who knows how much longer he was waiting on the moon for before the events of Rebuild even took place. Mari singing during the space battle I found to be rather amusing too, Asuka telling her to shut up kinda seemed like a little jab at Macross to be honest lol

I considered the possibility of Ritsuko lying to him, and while it's still possible there's one thing about that scene which doesn't add up if she's lying. They put the DSS choker on him because he saved Asuka from the Mk.04 during reentry. While they could have just lied to him about that, immediately after saying he has a 0.000% sync rate Ritsuko specifically tells him that he and EVA-01 awakened for 12 seconds. Why bother to tell him that if you were lying about having a 0.000% sync rate? The possibility that the test results were faulty doesn't seem realistic--if you pay very close attention to the bridge of the Wunder during the first scene, you'll notice that in the background are the MAGI, which Wille stole from NERV HQ. So they've got the most powerful supercomputers in the entire world on board, as well as Ritsuko who is not someone to half-ass her research and development. After all, the Wunder wasn't built overnight--it's safe to assume they had the entire ship built well before securing the EVA-01 for use as its 'engine'. Once they had EVA-01 it was just a matter of putting it into place (the EVA-01 is seen almost entirely intact in Ritsuko's diagram of the engine, so we can assume it wasn't dismantled when installed). You bring up an interesting point about the Marduk reports. In the TV series, the Marduk Report was just an analysis of synchronization results between children of a certain age and their dead parents (who were in fact in the entry plug). In the movie we still have a reference to the Marduk reports (an actual folder from the report is seen in 1.11, and the writing on Shinji's foot in the beginning of 3.33 is also a reference to the Marduk institute), so we know that they still exist and are still a committee for choosing Evangelion pilots. What we don't know, as you bring up, is that now we have no way of knowing exact what criteria they're using to select pilots. A certain psychological profile, perhaps? Or, as you say, something about the 'curse of EVA' which remains a mystery. I don't think Mari is really as normal as we think she is. I'm not sure what exactly she is but I wouldn't use the word 'normal' to describe her. Sure she doesn't have an eyepatch and she didn't cause the Third Impact but her performance in 2.22 seems to suggest 'normal' isn't the right word. The sudden change of heart was actually foreshadowed in the beginning of 2.22--she basically does what she wants for the hell of it. She quite clearly has her own agenda (which she doesn't care to drag 'adults' into) and seems to be happy if she's able to pilot an EVA no matter what EVA it is. It's possible that NERV, in focusing on Shinji's awakening and the focus on Human Instrumentality a la SEELE, would have removed her from active piloting status since she was unnecessary. Wille may have provided a more juicy incentive to stick around. Fun fact: Mari singing was not in 3.0--it was added for 3.33. The fact that the production team felt that to be a necessary addition seems to point to it being an identifying trait of Mari's character. She's fun... and at the very least, I can thank 3.0/3.33 for a sudden inrush of Asuka/Mari yuri doujinshi.

I want to know why Mari isn't dead.

Thank goodness its ending before 4.0 comes out. Although being an Evangelion ending, I don't know what kind of fooked up ending while on drugs its going to be like within the next 2 months.

Fuyutski (sp?) mentioned to Shinji during the game of Shogi that Yui's maiden name was Ayanami. IIRC her maiden name alllll the way up until this point was Ikari, and that Gendo chaged his surname to hers after they married. The old series canon makes sense... Yui was Gendo's "world" thus taking her surname over his own crappy one is a given. Just changing the surname of Yui to Ayanami is too convenient to match the Rei clones.. someone must have had a derp day in GAINAX when doing 3.0 or a "screw it, we're making this round peg fit a square hole" Soryu-Shikinami yes I get because of Japanese destroyer naming Changing up the Angels in 2.0, yes I get as ep 8-18 were just fillers completely changing the ending from the series to rebuild, yes I get as the ending was somewhat lacking The Ikari-Ayanami surname change? Nope

So I just finished reading the last Evangelion manga chapter 95, unless there is another chapter 95 part 2 to be released. After 18 years of hiatus hell, glad its finally over. As for the ending. For the most part I had low expectations, but then again most things I see I go in with low expectations so not to be too disappointed with having too high expectations.

I am not sure how much of this new world is Shinji's ideal world but it sure is better than the crappy one in End of Evangelion. Although the idea that everyone else's memories were erased, the relics of the cross statues, and Shinji running into Asuka who has no memory of anything got me wanting to know more about what happens next in this version of the world, ugh, and by how much I already wanted this manga to end too. Although it really is mainly cuz I just want to see more Asuka. Though it is a bummer that Rei disappeared and left in chapter 94 I would have wanted to see a Rei version on this world, but at least her story has an end.

Good thing the ending is different from all the other endings like the TV series version, movie version, angelic days version and so on, so far now that gives me a bit of interest on the Rebuild of Evangelion ending. Although again I can't have high hopes for Rebuilds ending so I'll go in waiting for 4.0 with low expectations instead.

So they have finally released a date for the DVD/Blu Ray release of the third Evangelion movie, February 18th, 2014.
