Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Music and Radio Broadcast > IDW Official Dub-Over Project

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 01:44 AM
This is the deal: I would love to have the http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5HYD8MD0 of Initial D with a dub-over made by some of the wonderful members of this forums. After hearing the songs by the fabulous group formed by Nomake, Pikachu, Ryosuke, Jake and Yosuke, (YoNoPiJaRyo for short) I think we could really do something epic.

Character List:

Yuuichi Tachibana - Pikachu Fragger
Itsuki Takeuchi - Alastair
Takumi Fujiwara - SgtXDNX
Natsuki Mogi - Nomake Wan
Papa - Alastair
Koichiro Iketani - Ryosuke63
Bunta Fujiwara - Saint
Kenji - JZX100
Keisuke Takahashi - Tesso
Hiroshi Fumihiro - Kiroshino
Ryosuke Takahashi - Ayako Watanabe
Narrator - Yosuke
Random voices (Akina Speed Stars and Red Suns members) - FC3SSavannaIII

Script:

Going by what the poll is currently saying, the majority wants a crack-filled script so that's what we're going to do. Each of the actors can help write up the script including as many funnies as they want. Once the script is ready, we'll need to record the lines maybe using Skype for when there are interactions between the characters. Only then we'll work on the editing/re-encoding, et al. The script will be kept a secret from anyone not directly involved, this way it'd be a surprise for everyone when they see the finished product.

Distribution:

The final product might also be posted on streaming sites such as YouTube but, it should get posted here first so that IDWF members can see it before anyone else. And yes, the "premiere" will be done through the TV stream, for those who were curious about it!

Media:
SPOILER

Future Projects:

As per people who didn't get the chance to be part of this, we can always dub other episodes. This is just the pilot, many epic things can happen from now on!

Posted by: Nomake Wan Nov 14 2009, 01:46 AM
I'm so in. If we don't get any real girls to take care of Natsuki's part, I'd be more than happy to offer my FAAAAAABULOUS services. Otherwise shiz, I'd love a lulzy character like Kenji, Itsuki or Iketani.

As for SFX, ahahaha. I bet HashiriyaR32 could dig up SFX for every single car in the show ever if need be.

Posted by: Pikachu_Fragger Nov 14 2009, 01:47 AM
You don't need to ask me, I'm down for it as well. XD

As for who to voice, well, I could be the gas station manager. That man's hillarious.

His name is "Yuuichi," which I find to be highly ironic considering some of your side-plots.

I can put some clips of myself trying out some lines of characters together. Heck, might even do that now.

Kou-chan, I thought we could start with that one but it's not a limit....

That said, do you want to take part in this? Other than Natsuki, I think that there were a few Ryosuke-groupies who could be your cup of tea. tongue.gif

Posted by: Godot Nov 14 2009, 02:22 AM
Guess Ill be playing the RedSuns Racers or the spectators since they all sound somewhat the same.

Posted by: SgtXDNX Nov 14 2009, 03:02 AM
Well, I'm definitely in for this. Any male voice is fine, I guess. laugh.gif

huhu thanks for asking, but no i can't speak english sad.gif

as for the female redsuns fans who just scream "ryosuke-sama!!!!!!" in the background, that would suit me more, but that doesn't come until episode 3 laugh.gif

Sounds nice and I'd love to be a part of it (I admire Bunta and Toshiya). But too bad, my Internet speed is too embarrassing. Lol.

Anyway, exactly how is that going to be done? Any remuneration of any sort as well?

Your internet speed has nothing to do with it, really. You'd get a script with lines and record yourself saying them, then send the recordings in to be dubbed into the video. wink2.gif

Posted by: Saint Nov 14 2009, 05:31 AM
Cool, let's do it. smile.gif When?

Edit: If I'm 'hired', that is... rolleyes.gif

I had the impression that it's done over the radio, or something like that which requires streaming (considering this thread being in Broadcast section).

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 06:18 AM
Saint, you joking about the remuneration right? tongue.gif

This is done for the Love of Bunta and for the lulz that will be had because, I should have mentioned this earlier, the dub-over is probably going to be full of crack unless everyone involved prefer otherwise. I think it's a lot more fun of we can come up with our own script instead of repeating the original dialog and for this, I'm honestly hoping Tesso will want to give us a hand, not to mention the fact that, I think, he'd be an awesome Keisuke.

Anyway, I've edited the first post with the names of the speaking characters, pick the one you want to play so we can start completing the cast.

Once we have that and the script, like Nomake said, the "actors" will need to record themselves saying the lines and send them over to the person who will be in charge of putting the sound together so that it can be encoded with the video. If Hashi can help with the SFX that would be awesome too. Alternatively, I would like to know if it's at all possible to somehow keep the soundtrack while removing the voices.

To everyone who's up for it: huge thanks!! grin2.gif

Posted by: Saint Nov 14 2009, 06:41 AM

Let's do it. I want Bunta; can I? Lol.

Oh shoot that's right. I don't have the kareoke, so if someone can give me a link to DL the single, that'd be great!

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 07:40 AM
Since I fail and I don't have the song myself, I posted a request at the Music Section thread for m.o.v.e.

Hopefully someone will want to help us out there! tongue.gif

Posted by: Kiroshino Nov 14 2009, 07:43 AM
Sounds like an interesting project. To everyone who is/becomes involved in this, best of luck. happy.gif

If you ever become really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really desperate for another male voice, let me know. I've always wanted to try something like this, but I probably have the dumbest sounding voice out of all of you, especially when recorded.

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 07:48 AM
Kiro-kun, would you be really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really interested and play either Kenji or Fumihiro?

They don't really have heaps of lines in that episode so you should be fine.

So, want me to update the cast list? (y/y?) tongue.gif

Posted by: Kiroshino Nov 14 2009, 07:52 AM
Seems like I'll have to rewatch Initial D. I don't remember who these characters are. XD

Put me down for Hiroshi Fumihiro for now 'cause he drives a MR2. biggrin.gif

Done.

Minna-san, we still need Itsuki, Kenji and Ryosuke. Who is up for it?

Also, here's the actual episode, in Japanese with Eng Subs:

I'd be him, but he doesn't really have any lines in that ep IIRC.

Sorry guys, but I don't exactly have the resources nor the audio mixing skills to work on that part. I'll try if I can, but I'll let my college midterms pass before I think about it.

He does! It's when he claims that the Red Suns will become a Kanto no densetsu! I think it's one of the coolest, most expressive lines he has in the whole series.....

And, Hashi, don't worry about it, I'm sure we can somehow keep the soundtrack. We're all busy so we don't want this to take too much time from our schedules!

That said, I'm off to *finish* making dinner. tongue.gif

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 11:35 AM
@ Ayako: I'm booking you for Ryosuke then.

@ JZX100: You could do Kenji, he doesn't really have that many lines.

@ Alastair: Asides from the fact that several people want you to play Papa, you could also do Itsuki if you feel like it.

Regarding voices, I don't know what the others think but, in my opinion it's not so much whether your voice sounds like the original but, rather, what your acting abilities are like, remember that the lines have to be acted, not merely read out loud. That also means being able to modulate your voice a little so it sounds different than usual.

Regarding the editing, encoding, et al, I think we could take care of that later. First of all, we need a script, then, everyone will definitely need sometime to practice a bit and record their lines. Then we'll work on the actual video which, hopefully will be uploaded here and/or streaming sites.

For now, I'll just complete the tentative cast. happy.gif

Come to think of it, should the dubs be more close related to the original, or be done in a hilarious matter?

Posted by: kyonpalm Nov 14 2009, 01:04 PM
I think we should make it a poll. By the end of the week we'll see what we should do, but keep in mind a funny script would take time to write.

Oh my god, this sounds like so much fun.

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 01:34 PM
Okay guys, here's the ORIGINAL script taken from the subtitle file. I've kept the timings of each sentence so we know how long we need to speak without being out of synch as well as added the name of the person speaking so that we know exactly how many lines each character has.

I'll try and get a poll added so we know what the people want (original script vs funny one) like Ryo-chan said, a crack-filled one will take time to write up so it's just a matter of how fast we want to get this done vs the amount of lulz we want to have.

@ Alastair, blame the bunch of guys who were at the chat during Nom's show, the instant I suggested doing this, it was an unanimous opinion that you would make the perfect Papa. If I were you, I'd take it as a compliment so that you don't lose sleep over it. tongue.gif

Posted by: Nomake Wan Nov 14 2009, 01:58 PM
Now that Tessou's on-board, he'll probably be willing to write up a lulz script for us. I'm totally in on having it re-written.

Al: You as Papa came up after I suggested myself as Natsuki. Apparently the chat agrees. laugh.gif

Now I gotta go practice to find the best tone and such. ermm2.gif

Posted by: Möbius Nov 14 2009, 02:18 PM

But there is no "both"option? ( j/k tongue.gif )

Posted by: Sanae Nov 14 2009, 02:27 PM
Well, I guess we could have an "Original Eng Lulz" option with people reading the actual lines in a weird/cracked up way for the lulz. tongue.gif

I voted lulz, because I've no idea how the original script can be spoken in a lulzy way. Lol. Unless we make funny accents/pronunciations.

Btw what format of recording is required? Mp3, wav, aac, or we can use whatever format convenient to us, since I believe most guys here are expert in converting things anyway.

Regarding the script, I think most people (including myself) would like to see it done in a crack-filled sort of way. That said, can we count on you (Tesso) to help with it? If so, how fast do you think you could come up with a first draft? And do you want anyone to help/provide with ideas? Saint's one was funny.

Moving on to the script, in order to speed things up and since Tesso is a very busy man, I think it's best if everyone who is involved in this project gets to contribute with their own ideas. For this purpose, here's the list of the IDW Official Dub Over Project Team:

Ryosuke63 (Iketani)
Saint (Bunta)
JZX100 (Kenji)
Tesso (Keisuke)
Kiroshino (Fumihiro)
Ayako Watanabe (Ryosuke)

Now, what we should do is, from the script you can ALSO find in this post, pick your own lines and tweak them around to make them funny/insane/whatever. Don't worry though, if you need help/ideas, get in touch with one of the other members, I'm sure we'll all be happy to help. Also, if you have suggestions for any of the characters you aren't playing, let the member who is playing him/her know so that he can tell you what he thinks/be forever grateful for your contribution.

Once we have a draft put together, we should meet up in AIM or IRC to talk about how to get this done. Skype will also be helpful to record conversations so they flow more naturally. At any rate, from now on, any script issues should be kept within the group as to not spoil the surprise for everyone else, okay? PM any of the members if you guys need an opinion on what you've come up with, ok?

To Nomake and Ryo-chan: using Audacity, I managed to remove the vocals from the opening theme: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4B17MT57.

It's not perfect but it can be used as a base. Also, I've applied the same process to the actual episode's soundtrack and it works quite well, the voices are mostly gone and most of the SFX are still there. Unfortunately, it also removes the vocals in the two insert songs. If anyone here knows any trick on how to do this better, please let me know!

I'll be posting the links to the actual Japanese audio track from the entire episode plus the one where I removed the voices and the audio-less video in the https://idforums.net/index.php?showtopic=39633# so people can start playing around with them to see what's the best solution for when we'll need to do the final encoding.

Hashi:

Import your stereo file into Audacity.
Open the track menu (click the arrow next to the track title), and choose “Split Stereo Track.”
Select the lower track (the right channel) by clicking it in the area around the mute/solo buttons.
Choose “Invert” from the Effects menu.
Using the track menus, change each track to “Mono.”
Select All and Export as WAV or MP3

Before I begin, I'd like to know what theme we're writing about: racing, sexual anxiety, etc.?

For my one scene, I need Keisuke (Tesso) and Iketani (Ryosuke63). Let me know what you guys want to "discuss" during this scene via PM:

Iketani - We've got visitors.
- 00:13:15,888 --> 00:13:16,912
Iketani - <i>The Red Suns? </i>
- 00:13:17,556 --> 00:13:20,047
Iketani - <i>Are they the Red Suns, </i>
- <i>the fastest drivers in Akagi? </i>
- 00:13:53,959 --> 00:13:57,486
Keisuke - We're the members
- of the Akagi Red Suns Team.
- 00:13:58,297 --> 00:14:00,197
Keisuke - I don't want to be rude but...
- 00:14:00,599 --> 00:14:05,195
Keisuke - Who's the fastest team, or driver,
- on this mountain? Please tell us.
- 00:14:05,804 --> 00:14:07,135
Random - What do they want?
- - We're the fastest.
- 00:14:08,073 --> 00:14:11,600
Iketani - We're the Akina Speed Stars Team.
- 00:14:11,844 --> 00:14:13,539
Iketani - We consider
- ourselves the fastest here.
- 00:14:15,514 --> 00:14:16,913
Keisuke - Then we've found
- what we're looking for!
- 00:14:17,416 --> 00:14:19,281
Keisuke - Would you like to hold
- a practice session...
- 00:14:19,385 --> 00:14:21,751
Keisuke - ...with our team, the Akagi Red Suns,
- here at Mt. Akina?
- 00:14:26,659 --> 00:14:29,719
Iketani - Eh??
Itsuki - Wow! What a great turn of events!
- 00:14:30,763 --> 00:14:32,128
Fumihiro - What do you think?
- 00:14:32,264 --> 00:14:34,232
Fumihiro - Since we usually only run
- with people we know...
- 00:14:34,333 --> 00:14:35,698
Fumihiro - ...it's becoming routine.
- 00:14:35,868 --> 00:14:38,996
Fumihiro - Running against other teams
- gives us a new challenge.
- 00:14:39,438 --> 00:14:41,929
Fumihiro - We can make new friends
- and exchange knowledge.
- 00:14:42,141 --> 00:14:43,972
Fumihiro - And it improves our skills too.
- 00:14:44,076 --> 00:14:45,043
Fumihiro - At first...
- 00:14:45,177 --> 00:14:46,337
Fumihiro - ...we can run together.
- 00:14:46,445 --> 00:14:48,106
Fumihiro - Then each team will be
- represented by one driver...
- 00:14:48,213 --> 00:14:49,737
Fumihiro - ...to compete in both
- uphill and downhill.
- 00:14:50,049 --> 00:14:51,880
Fumihiro - We aren't concerned
- about winning or losing.
- 00:14:51,984 --> 00:14:54,475
Fumihiro - We only seek to develop
- friendship between the teams.
- 00:14:54,653 --> 00:14:55,620
Fumihiro - What do you think?
- 00:14:56,522 --> 00:14:58,820
Iketani - If you put it that way,
- how can we refuse?
- 00:14:58,924 --> 00:14:59,891
Kenji - Okay.
- 00:15:00,559 --> 00:15:03,687
Fumihiro - How about next
- Saturday at 10 o'clock?
- 00:15:03,829 --> 00:15:05,091
Iketani - Okay, fine.
- 00:15:05,731 --> 00:15:09,030
Keisuke - Today we'll just take it easy.
- 00:15:09,401 --> 00:15:11,494

Probably going to have to work from scratch on the audio if we want SFX and our own music. The voiceless track is fantastic, no doubt, but if we go that way it should be to make a serious dub on top of the funny one.

This is perfect Tesso! If we apply the same tweaks to the actual audio track I think we'd have the perfect base for the "serious" version of the episode. For the parody one we can just do what you suggested earlier and work with the audio-less video to create our own soundtrack.

Uh... you guys do realize there was an instrumental of AROUND THE WORLD featured on the Initial D Vocal Album, right? Track 3? Yes, it has to be trimmed down to be 1:30 like the intro, but that should be WAY easier than editing out vocals, am I right?

EDIT: Link removed because I just realized that Tessou did EXACTLY what I just suggested to create his file, therefore it's superior. f**k YEAR.

PROTIP: I have every Initial D CD ever. For serious. wink2.gif

EDIT: Ayako, I recommend http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ since it's free. The only thing you have to be careful about is that by default, it's set to record in mono. If you can't figure out how to set it to Stereo, let one of us know and we can help you out.

Shh. That's for me to know and for you to be in awe of.

EDIT: Just tried to edit some lines in the Papa/Natsuki scene and came across something I should've realized earlier. The subtitle script is not going to be easy to work with, since the English translations aren't close to the actual "lip-flap" syllable count (which is based on the Japanese syllable count, not the translation).

We'd be better off with a script that uses the Tokyopop Dub, if anyone's willing to give it a shot. I have the DVDs, but they only have subtitles for the Japanese version, like the fansubs. sad.gif

Posted by: Sanae Nov 16 2009, 03:21 AM
I see what you mean and, I took some time to re-write the script while listening to the TokyoPop dub and now my brain hurts. pinch2.gif

I'm really sorry to say this but, the music, the voices and the way some of the sentences sounded made me want to throw myself down the nearest cliff. I had heard it was pretty bad but, seriously, I wasn't expecting it to be this atrocious! They make Bunta sound like a low-level thug....*runs to a corner to cry*

At any rate, if any of you feels like doing a quick proofreading and/or quality check just to make sure I didn't miss anything/understood the heavy US slang correctly, I'll be forever and ever grateful. There's one word Itsuki says that I didn't understand at all, you'll see it's followed by three asterisks.

*is off to re-watch the episode in Japanese* tongue.gif

PS: If we do use this version, can we possibly keep the original names? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

There should be two versions:

One the "serious" English one using either the TokyoPop dub or an adaptation from the subtitle file (since it doesn't lip-synch well); the other one will be the crack-filled script you guys will come up with.

EDIT: There's no deadline for when you guys need to record everything but, of course, the earlier get them done, the better. For that purpose, I think you guys should really make a final decison on whether you want to use the TokyoPop script or the subtitle one.

As per the crack-filled one, I think you could use either one as a base, just make sure you keep the words as similar-sounding as possible to the original ones so that we don't mess up with the lip-synch.

So, to the Team: please come up with a decision as soon as possible so that you can all get things started, okay?

Posted by: Kiroshino Nov 16 2009, 06:40 AM
Well, like I said, I don't mind either way. I'll start recording using the Tokyo Pop dub seeing as we don't have to work together for that one.

Posted by: Tessou Nov 16 2009, 10:54 AM
Okay, let me teach you all something about ADR and scriptwriting. Tokyopop's lines are following a design that scriptwriters for anime created a long time ago. In simplest terms, it's simplification to fit the lip flaps. You have the literal line translation in English, the number of lip flaps, and a thesaurus on hand to complete this task.

LITERAL: I was delivering tofu for the last seven years. (14 syllables)
LIP FLAPS: 10
ADAPTATION: I've been running tofu for seven years.

It's not difficult. You don't have to run from the existing Tokyopop script. You can just take the generally faithful subs and adapt them from there to match the flaps.

Tessou and Sanae: When I said to use the dub, it was strictly for syllable count. No way do I want to use the TP names or anything. My only thought was, those of us who don't have immediate access to the episode itself (to synch along to the video) would be able to write lines that match the 'flaps if we had an English script that already did.

That's it. I've got the DVDs so again, doesn't bother me too much either way. Was just thinking in general.

Back to perverting this script~

Posted by: Sanae Nov 16 2009, 12:40 PM
Nomake, it does make sense if we use the TP one but changing the names to the original ones. That said, let's wait for all of you to express your opinion and then go with what the majority wants to do.

Judging by what some of you guys have told me via PM, the general preference is to use the TokyoPop one with the original Japanese names so, I'd say you can all start recording using that one.

For that purpose, Pikachu has given me a really good idea: let's have a naming convention for the audio files audio files, "EP1_00_03_18_21.mp3", this, as you can see, uses the first timestamp of the sentence you're recording. That way it'll be easier to look for a specific timestamp for the people who will do the mixing.

SCRIPT - CRACK VERSION:

The time limit for this one should be pretty soon. I'd say we should aim to have something ready for next weekend. If you guys need more time/ideas, please let one of us know, okay?

Once again, thanks to all for your help! happy.gif

A little look at what I'm writing for the lulz version.

QUOTE
Keisuke - We're all up in it with the Akagi Blue Ballaz.
- 00:13:58,297 --> 00:14:00,197
Keisuke - And since we like to ball on fools like crazy...
- 00:14:00,599 --> 00:14:05,195
Keisuke - Any of you retards have any skill on the streets?
- 00:14:05,804 --> 00:14:07,135
Random - What do they want?
  - - We're the fastest.
- 00:14:08,073 --> 00:14:11,600
Iketani - (We're the Akina Speed Stars Team.)
- 00:14:11,844 --> 00:14:13,539
Iketani - (We consider
- ourselves the fastest here.)
- 00:14:15,514 --> 00:14:16,913
Keisuke - Shiiiiit, son. That S13 ain't worth enough paper to wipe my ass with...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks Keisuke WAS actually thinking that while he was talking to them. I-LOVE-IT. laugh.gif

I think I needa buy a Microphone to start recording. Dont think my laptop can handle it. After that dilemma is done, Ill start on the Lulzy one then the serious one.

So Tokyopop (instead of the fansubbed) version and the crack version both?

I'm fine with the Tokyopop version if that's what the majority wants. But when I first watched the TP version last night, it sounded horrible. They talk ghetto. Lol.

A suggestion: if we're making both versions, lets make the video dual language that we can switch, if possible. You know, like we can switch between English and Japanese audio in mkv and ogm? I think it'll be really great. Completing the series would make it even greater and every ID fan would probably wanna watch it like another anime series. Lol. (Hope we don't get sued for copyright, though...)

Nice, Tesso. I think I know where to start now on the "lulz" version. Will definitely start doing my part by this weekend and might have everything done by next Monday, including recordings for both versions.

No, what you guys should do is what a lot of abridged redubs do; have some disclaimer about for some whack tokyopop line in the middle of all the new dialog.

Posted by: Sanae Nov 18 2009, 01:21 AM
A disclaimer WILL be added along with the credits. Not that it makes what we're doing in any way legal but, as long as we don't make a profit out of it, we should be fine.

Saint: The idea was to have the double audio track encoded with the video track in an ogm or mkv file. This way we can easily switch from the serious one to the lulz version without having to change file.

My only question is this: what formats are currently supported by IDW TV?

Everything. IDW TV merely rebroadcasts what you have on your screen. You can do anything you want. (Keep in mind, I use it to broadcast erogame playthroughs)

Splendid!

I better hurry up. Lol.

I'm doffing the plan to read the amount of lipflaps. It's ridiculously hard and tedious and it will never be done in time if we want to have this done by the weekend. All I'm doing now is matching the audio time for time. If Keisuke talks for 5 seconds, I'm talking for 5 seconds. Watch the "Juggernaut B*tch" videos and you'll see that this can still be hilarious without even attempting to match flaps.

Can anyone help me come up with lines for Kenji that sounds good? ermm2.gif

Super-pathetic attempt coming up:

SPOILER

Anyway, someone here will very likely have a better idea.

Nomake: great to hear we'll be able to broadcast this. All we need now is to find a free slot for the "premiere".

... Sanae, you're a lifesaver. laugh.gif

Edit: My mike stopped working >_<

Since I've basically been away from my laptop most of the weekend, I thought I'd ask what's everyone's status so that we all know how forward/behind schedule we are.

@ JZX100: is the mike still non-functional? pinch2.gif

I got a Rock Band mic to work. laugh.gif Did you get the PM?

Posted by: Sanae Nov 23 2009, 10:18 AM
Brilliant. And yes, I did get the PM, I'm saving all the audio files you guys send me so that when he have them all, we can start working on the editing.

Posted by: Alastair Nov 23 2009, 10:36 AM
i have been sick with a really really bad cold. I think tonight if don or jake are on skype we will go over lines n whatever smile.gif

Posted by: Kiroshino Nov 23 2009, 11:10 AM
I'll try to record it now and send you the audio file for the Tokyo Dub version. Still need to work with others to finish up the script for the lulz version.

Edit: Voice sounded really tired so I deleted the recordings. Next time I get a chance to record will be Wednesday.

Edit 2: Sorry for wasting everyone's time, but I really don't feel comfortable/confident doing this at all. If anyone doesn't have a part but wants one, they can have mine. Thanks for giving me the opportunity, but I can't follow through with it like I originally intended. Sorry.

Posted by: Sanae Dec 23 2009, 05:17 AM
@ Kiro-kun, it's fine if you don't feel like doing this. I appreciate your honesty! happy.gif

To the rest of the team: sorry for dropping this for so long but I got busy with my writing again so I haven't had the time to coordinate this properly. That said, what do you guys say if we try and pick it up after the holidays?
