Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Initial D General Discussion > What did Initial D do for you?

Posted by: iconoklast Oct 23 2008, 03:47 PM
The 1st time I saw Initial D, I was 18, and a total anime feend. A buddy of mine had downloaded bad rips of the show off the net before Torrents were around, and I found myself enjoying the show a fair bit. The thing was I was not a car guy, so the show really broke my brain at 1st. I found myself asking what the hell all the chasie codes, engine codes, and cars in general were as I watched it. I had to take a lot of time online studying cars and asking people who knew better. Almost 10 years later I find myself heavily involved in the automotive scene, tuning multiple cars, and racing every chance I get. All because of this one anime.

I was just curious how many other people on here either got into cars cause of this series, or got into anime as a result of it. I know a lot of car dudes who didn't know shit about anime till they began watching this show.

iD got me into the car culture.

At first Initial D got me into car's and drifting with technique, and not the e-brake

But as I started catching up with the story (both Anime and Manga versions) and updates came out slower, I started exploring other Manga's with car's or just interesting stories, like Full Metal Alchemist (which actually got me into anime later on)

Werd. Bought two FCs and two FDs because of ID, not I'm a full blown rotary fanatic...

Made me appreciate lesser powered cars.

Got me into watching non english-dubbed anime. In fact, the first full episode of ID I watched was a Cantonese dub of S1 EP16. And it of course got me into cars.

Before Initial D, I thought of racing only as a simple contest. Whoever had the faster car won, you know? But then I got the manga, and I was amazed at how much I was missing. Techniques...ever since I read Initial D, my racing ability on driving games has improved at an alarming rate, as well as my real life driving.

Posted by: Spaz Oct 24 2008, 10:12 AM
Well, I'd been into drifting for a few years, casually (or as casual as it can get) on public roads. I'd always been into racing games and cars and wanted to get more into car-related media, so I picked up ID.

Well, I learned about a lot of concepts (in name only, of course, taking ID seriously on driving is pretty stupid), and did more research into them, and began to practice.

This past summer, I used motorsports (autox specifically) as a base for my car purchase. In autox, I've used multiple techniques that I was introduced to by ID, including heel-toe and LFB.

ID has done a lot for me...

It made me realize why people like subs over dubs.

It made me not only appreciate lesser powered cars, but Japanese cars a lot more. I used to be a Mustang fanboy but now I won't touch an American car.

It influenced me to buy my Celica.

It made me realize power isn't everything and suspension and braking are just as important.

I liked cars before but I really love cars now. I've taken the time to understand how engines, turbochargers, suspension settings, superchargers work, I'm going to learn more.

To add on to the previous one, I'm going to buy some older cars with engines that need major work to understand how rotary and cylinder engines work. Maybe one day I'll be able to have my own mechanic shop. And even if I don't, I believe Wataru was right that every road racer should have a basic knowledge of this stuff.

I bought a stick shift car despite my dad telling me it was too hard for me to learn. He's now jealous because I'm getting the hang of it and he doesn't know how to drive it.

It has made me check out mountain passes when before my only interest was freeways.

For awhile I wore a bandana on my head like Kyoichi.

It introduced the "Lonely Driver/ROAD RACERS DON'T NEED GIRLS!" concept to me and it's one I live by. I seriously don't want to ever get married because if I don't I'll have more money for my cars and I can do whatever I want!

I'm sure there's more but these are the big ones.

Posted by: TakFR Oct 24 2008, 03:22 PM
It made me appreciate sleepers and 80's Japanese cars which are now my favorite type of cars (the S13 in particular)

Posted by: iconoklast Oct 25 2008, 09:21 AM
Its interesting a little anime about a boy who delivers tofu on a mountain pass and races in the evening has had this much of an impact on people.

ID has had quite a profound affect on me. A lot of people here are gonna moan but I found that the live action movie was quite inspiring and having just finished watching the first stage of the anime its made me appreciate Jap cars more.

I'm part of the VAG car scene (i.e VW's, Audi's etc) and am spending thousands of £'s on my car. But after I finish modding my current project I'm tempted to go Jap for my next car seeing as they are the best to drift in. Also I'm gonna kick things up a notch community-wise as far as organising racing events go but, for obvious reasons, I'm gonna remain tight-lipped about my plans.

Posted by: loki700 Oct 25 2008, 01:52 PM
Provided me with entertainment about something i liked, but from reading racing theory books and stuff it didn't really introduce me to anything new, just gave me something to watch in 6th grade along with ruroni kenshin, both of which my brother had fansubs of.

And septic, they aren't the best for drifting, i don't know where you got that idea. Hell, people were drifting in ferraris way before they were in japanese cars.

Posted by: twitchykun Oct 25 2008, 02:15 PM
I could've sworn this topic was done before, but i'll bite.

I was 18 years old back in 2001. After getting into Para Para Paradise, a friend of mine told me about Eurobeat music in general. I was also a bit of a gearhead, and an anime fan, and she told me about initial D.

I first saw episode 15, "Angry Takumi's Maniacal Drive", and that sealed the deal. It's still my favorite episode to this day.

Posted by: iconoklast Oct 26 2008, 01:39 AM
Septic its cool it got you looking into other cars. But one thing you gotta realize is most people drift japanese because they tend to offer one of the cheapest balanced rear wheel drive layouts needed for drifting. Aero cars are just as suited if not better in a lot of areas. And lets not forget that some of the top tier Formula D cars out there right now are a mustang, a viper, and a pontiac solstice. Its just about finding an adequately balanced car with enough power to get those rear wheels spinnin.

Posted by: Septic Oct 26 2008, 06:25 AM
Yeah I understand that but Jap cars tend to also have the best rear-wheel drive layouts. A lot of the cars us dubbers drive are either too heavy or front wheel drive and are a ightmare as far as understeer is concerned.

Jap cars such as for e.g, the Nissan Z250 on the other hand have a ridiculously low understeer rating.

We're lacking the power stakes although I do know people running MkI Golfs that can beat your average supercar. Time will tell really once I finish my current project but regardless, the impact iD has had on many of its fans is a testament to its brilliance.

lol same hear. When I was 16 I was really into sports bikes. Back in high school I really never knew what drifting really was or really into cars, untill my friend introduced me to Initial D and got me into the car culture and drifting.

ID had a huge impact on me. It greatly changed the way I look at driving. It began to become more to me than an "everyday" thing. I began to concentrate on my driving, trying to feel the car and what is happening and trying to understand whats going on.
I would even dare say it actually made me a better driver.

It also made me appreciate "rice burners" :-)
In fact I'd love to owe one myself, but unfortunately I lack the necessary money for a new car.

While most of my friends would probaly choose a Porsche or Ferrari if they had to, I would choose a R34 GT-R any time.

It even made me think of going pro, but thats kinda far away for me right now.
But I began to love racing games because of ID. Man I became all excited when they announced the AE86 for NfS Underground 2 :-)

And last but not least - it brought me to Eurobeat :-)

I had a lot of fun with ID and I still love it.

Posted by: broccoli Oct 26 2008, 02:28 PM
Initial D? It introduced me to the fantastic genre of Eurobeat, end of story! Besides the lame introductory statement, it also got me into cars, got me way interested in anime (I used to think anime was lame) and of course, hope for tomboys like Kyoko

this boy is a different man now.... because of the D.

Posted by: Holland Close Oct 26 2008, 02:54 PM
Eurobeat. A bit of cars. Maybe a bit of physics related to racing. But mostly Eurobeat.

Posted by: Gruppe 5 Oct 26 2008, 06:37 PM
It entertained me. That's about it. I can also say it got me more into Touge and helped to influence my love of my car and the importance of light weight.

I remember the time when I was playing GT3 (didn't know ID yet) i can't over take that junk car (86 4th stage ver) hehehe...

Then after watching the series, it had a huge impact on me permanently... Thats the time i bought my car on my avatar... its the closiest thing to an 86...

I started to upgrade my engine to a 4age etc etc... It made me appreciate under powered RWD 80's car Toyotas...

I started to join some carclubs in our area then every Friday nights we hangout with our oldschool car parked just like in ID

Take a good Euro car and it can beat any japanese car, even if both are doing proper four wheel drifts. Japanese cars just offer close to the same handling at a much cheaper price, but you still can't fairly compare the two.

Posted by: Todeshornisse Oct 28 2008, 02:19 PM
Initial D got me interessed in cars and especially asian cars and it brought me to eurobeat.

Also it is still one of the best anime shows ever. But I watched other animes before D, so this point goes to other serials.

Posted by: iconoklast Oct 28 2008, 06:31 PM
Gruppe, that is a sick bmw you got there. I had a 1989 325i Special Edition I was trying to tune. But getting parts for it was a b*tch, and eventually the cost of maintaining it got to be too much, so I sold it and got a 1989 civic lol. What all is done to it???

Oh yea, I totally forgot about mentioning how much Eurobeat rocks. Initial D would not be Initial D without the Eurobeat.

Why exactly is it called Eurobeat if its something which is not widely distributed outside of Japan anyway??

Posted by: A l X Nov 3 2008, 06:23 AM
For me, watching Initial D again has got me even more wanting to get my license as soon as possible...

I used to be a guy who would be lazy to get a license because i think driving a car is gonna be difficult to learn...However, watching initial D again has reignited my memories of why i love cars so much...and it makes me determined to get a license as soon as possible...

haha...in my country, you have to take some basic tests before you can learn how to drive(idk whether it's the same for everyone)...and call me naive or dumb but i decided to learn about how to start a car before i even went for this tests...When i have nothing to do,i imagine the clutch and stuff under my feet and pretend on how to start a car and stuff...

Euro-beat rocks!

Ah really? The newer euro cars tend to be much heavier and so difficult to really drift in.

Take my Polo for example; its slammed to the ground on sports coilovers but the understeer on the thing is ridiculous. I dunno...Euro cars have more soul but for some reason Jap cars seem to be the way to go when it comes to power and drifting.

Once I finish my current project I'll see what I get. Can't wait cool.gif

Seriously,i was a bit a car guy before i first watched initial d and got addicted to it by the first minute.
it made me discover eurobeat and i now listen only eurobeat with a bit of muse
it made me discover the real way of tuning car thats mean all go no show.
It made me want to go further in car industry and now i want to become a aerodynamician.
It also always made me happy when something was going bad in my life, well now its top gear also who keep me happy with initial d.
and also takumi teached me that you have to never listen to what people are saying

Well to take a similar note out Initial D, I've actually been driving on the roads since I was fifteen mostly just country back roads and I never really understood the thrill of driving like my friends did.

I first saw Initial D when I was seventeen and I never really got into it, I didn't like anime at the time and although I watched up to the end of the First Stage I never bothered watching the rest but I did start listening to Eurobeats because of Initial D.

That was how it was until about six months ago. I stumbled across an anime I did remember liking, Evangelion.

So suddenly I started tracking down what anime I could remember and those I thought looked good and about three months ago I brought all the Initial D DVDs and watched them in the space of about two weeks after work and on my days off.

And I love it. Before I saw Initial D again I only saw my car as a means of getting around but like my brother we always drive fast regardless of the road.

My car is a 2006 Ford XR6 sedan.

user posted image

I can't say I've done anything extreme in it, I only drive fast, that's all. I'm not like all my idiot friends who go off and tear up the gravel roads (I live up one and I'm sick of the damage it does) or just generally drive like a dickhead; thinking they're the next big thing.

I wouldn't call it a "drift" car, it's pretty heavy but very stable. If it had to be used for any racing style, it would be grip driving.

I always thought my next car would be a FPV GT-P (a BA or a BF like my XR6) but after seeing Initial D again, I wouldn't mind a "ricer" whistling.gif

The Sileighty from Initial D has me smitten at the moment but I think it would be a bit hard to get the parts in Australia to make one like the one from Initial D.

Posted by: wiseman443 Nov 13 2008, 10:42 AM
Initial D made me buy a Merkur XR4TI ( RWD ) because it's the closest thing to a real drifter and to a AE86, and also because it's a Ford. i swapped the motor for a 2.0 Duratec HE running 290 HP whistling.gif ... big step from the original SOHC 4 banger motor. it's a very good car but very underrated. fear2.gif

also ID made me love Super eurobeat. before that i was listening to other garbage techno songs grin2.gif

Initial D taught me to specialize in something and become the best at it that I can be. The real life version of Initial D would have to be Michael Phelps and I thought Tom Brady would be a good example but he failed to win in the Super Bowl. This specialization usually applies in the field of athletics where a person who excels at a given sport and becomes no. 1 in their field can be quite famous such as Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher etc.. The story of Initial D is really the story of what it is like to be a famous athlete who becomes no. 1. Also I once spotted a white AE 86 Trueno in Toronto on Queens Quay at the foot of Jarvis St. that had black Japanese lettering on the side and I thought "cool a fan of Initial D", then I thought "naw I must be hallucinating". So if there is a phantom AE 86 driver out there who lives in Toronto please post a picture of your ride.

Well, I already told my story 2 years ago, and i´m going to teel it again.

In the 90´, my aunt from France gived me a call and told me taht she wanted to give me a car - I was about 18 years old, or something...
With only 2 months of license, I drived across Europe with that car - all alone.

Crashed it 3 months later. Payed a hell of a bill to fix it - in my own way, of course...

I really love that car.

I was a big fan of anime in that time - but I just found out that there was an anime about cars... after seeing a cover from the movie Initial D ( weird, heim?!)

Saw the movie, and wanted to see more... found the anime - 4 season... than I saw the first season, then the second, then the third and agin the 4th... and watched all over again... and again...

I really felt that "this was the best anime" ´cause I could see me in Takumi´s role - in real life. I started to make crazy things with my car - got a bad reputation back home because of that - got persecuted by other racers, and latelly by cops too...

But I had to stop. That was not the kind of life I wanted to have.

Got married.

Both a house.

Got a dog.

Both another car.

And I still have my first car in the garage.

Late at night, I go to the hill near my house and start to remember the old days, making that car coming back to "life", burning ruber, drifting down hill, braking the silence of the night with the rear wheels...

I´m still known to be a reckless driver, and got me a bad reputation again in the new country I work in now.

Got me a job were I drive other cars, new cars and test it off road - 4wd.

So you can say that it had a good influence over me.

Can wait to see Extra Stage 2 - ´cause were I´m in the internet dosent have a good speed connection, so I told my wife to start downloading it, so when I get back in Christmas, I can kill a little of my "saudades" !

See´ya.

P.S. - didn´t post anything for almost 2 and a half years... 2nd post today after a looooonnnnngggg break......

ID got me seriously interested in cars. I was originally gonna settle on an old 80's civic sedan, but then I saw the show back in 2003 and wanted an FC real bad.

By the time I finally had the money to get a car (years of saving later), there were no decent FCs in the area, so I plunked down half my savings on an old '86 MR2 N/A. Good times, but it just couldn't fit the bill for me since I intended to actually carry shit in it. laugh.gif

Eventually I stumbled upon the most beautiful car in the world, traded the MR2 in, and now Zeta and I are inseparable companions on the road. smile.gif

I was a car guy before Initial D, but it was all American iron from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. Big power and straight line acceleration, basically. After getting into Initial D I began to appreciate cornering abilities, and my car horizon broadened. After a while my front wheel drive Saturn Ion just wasn't what I wanted it to be, and I chanced into test driving a '95 Mazda Miata. I was sold on small, light cars with rear wheel drive and high-revving engines at that point, and soon ended up with my '01 Miata. I also pushed my anime boundaries from Cowboy Bebop to include numerous other shows, especially Wangan Midnight.

a lot. iniD is actually the first anime that i got really, really interested in. i mean, i watched anime way long before iniD but nothing that got me REALLY hooked. i don't know anything bout cars before this (yeah i'm a girl) and i can't tell a FC from a mercedes or anything like that. well maybe not that bad. i got interested in driving after watching it and i passed my driving test on my first attempt which my driving instructor considered to be impossible for me since i'm the "worst driver" he had ever come across and the night before my test i just watched iniD esp ryosuke so i passsed the next day

I was practicing 1 handed driving in an FF Ford Focus for a wile on our mountain pass. What I came to learn was that while it has a practical application, you really need to set the vehicle up well to accomodate for the driving style. You can't just get in a car and do it, unless it has the steering lock set up a certain way. Might not work too good on an FF layout either. I was always trying to learn that one 2 foot driving technique that dude from the Night Kids who drove the EG6 would do. That shit is f**king haaard!

Thanks to Extreme Stage I think my next car will be a Lancer Evolution IX.

I got to drive one a few weeks back after a friend of mine in the navy came home with one of his mates who had one. I told him I'd love to have a crack in a real one and I got to drive it back from the next town over - through a mountain pass.

Great fun.

Well, I have been into cars since I was 12. Anything relating to cars I collected and loved. When I discovered Initial D, I fell in love with it. The first contact was anime, later I discovered the manga. Before Initial D I mostly molded cars by my self. I didn't hang out or go cruising. After I watched a few episodes I decided that I wanted to associate with other auto enthusiasts. I like the excitement that the Speed Stars have about cars and crews. Now, I try to get a few car peps together for a "wash day" or BBQ. I have had some really great times hanging out since Initial D.

Complemented my intereste in sports cars, was a "gateway" to watching other animes and eventually dramas. Plus it's part of the reason I bought my current car.

Initial D got me into the fascination of drifting and also the upbeat Eurobeat songs!

Posted by: Dan Mar 21 2009, 04:42 AM
What got me into it is the computer generated race scenes.
I got amazed with that unlike traditional animation like Cyber Formula,...... [speaking of that] (Goes to "Things Initial D Characters would never say" thread)

Anyways,

As I watched the series, It got me hooked.
Coupled w/ upbeat Eurobeat music, and it gave me basic stock knowledge about cars, technical mojos, performance, and race skills, including drifting.

It also got me into cars further, being my favorite in the anime are Evos, STis, and RX-7's.

Well, I've been into cars since I was little. I guess the main thing that Initial D did for me, was just getting to know more about the Japanese cars like the AE86, and the cars in the series, and the different names that they refer them by, like EG6. As well as getting to know more about touges.

It's also made me appreciate more of the manga part as well. I've never read one before, and right now I'm reading all the scanlations of Initial D, and it's making me love it even more. I want to go out and get the manga's, but I've read some scans of the Tokyopop versions around volume 10-15, and the name changes are a big turnoff to me. I guess Initial D has made me disappointed in Tokyopop.

In one way, Initial D has actually put me in a new perspective at what cars can do and also some of the theories of racing in mountain passes and touge racing. I have played the Initial D game since I was 15 years old, and it became the only thing that actually solved all of my problems that I had to deal with in the real world. School, drama, all that stuff.

In some way, I am thankful that they introduced Initial D here in the U.S. and has also brought me to buy a Honda Civic EG6. And hopefully one day, I might pull a Shingo on the mountain pass here in the U.S.

Initial D has made me spend almost 800 dollar of my hard earn money in total in arcade machine in few months (during V2 and V3 booming).

And almost fail on few of my course because of spending to much time in the arcade, watching the anime not to mention browsing on internet for the initial D scanlated manga on the web (at that time was rather hard).

Luckily I quit on early V3 era because they make the GC8V weaker and shift stick failure due to too many abuse (eraser was "cool" that time).

Think it back . . . Initial D had never bring me any good thing apart from meeting a new friends that share the same miserable life (well you know..., we want to go drive fast with real car but have no skill and could not afford the real car and end up with arcade machine )

ID really made my appreciate some things in my life even more.

Before I learned about intitial D, I was already autocrossing and driving on the racetrack (HPDE) with a Japanese FR car. I also had a Japanese wife and had been to Japan a few times.

Initial D made me appreciate the motorsports hobby even more and also got me more into Japanese culture which brings me closer to my wife. Watching the episodes has also added more words to my Japanese vocabulary.

It's also given me a desire to buy an AE86 or an FC or FD smile.gif

Posted by: Trasher_54 Jan 29 2010, 05:47 PM
Initial D. made me more interested in Japanese tuners than the American and European cars. It also gave me information about the cars, the driving techniques and the mechanical stuff.

It got me hooked to IDAS which is still the best arcade game ever. And my love for the S2000 grew.

And until now, it is still the number 1 anime and manga for me. biggrin.gif

Drift = Japanese cars are the number one.

Drag = American cars are the number one.

Circuit = European cars are the number one.

It really comes down to the type of racing.
Generally European cars are superior in most aspects, mainly because their cars are technologically bred from Formula One circuit racing... Benz, Ferrari, etc...

Japanese do tend to be better in Drift because they originated the sport of drifting. But then you have to be realistic, 'cause we don't live in a world filled with drift courses.
The road and streets out there are not always drift courses. Fast highways for example do tend to suit European and American cars better.

Initial D made me into an anime fiend. I was already doing things similar to drift in the rallyx world... mostly because i was too slow.

I think it is awesome the way there are anime for everyone to relate to. Ex ID or maybe slamdunk! for basketball fans.

it would be cool if USA cartoons would take a cue in this aspect.

Initial D brought me BACK to cars. I was into cars, and rally back in the day. I loved the Impreza back in 1998 when it first came out. I actually still remember the first time I saw one in a commercial where it was driving through mud and the paint flickered between the consumer version and the rally version. Sometime after that I kinda didn't care about cars in that way anymore. I just thought "get a reliable truck that you can carry lots of sh!t in." Then I saw Initial D and it slapped me in the face for thinking such stupid thoughts. Now I'm much happier, poorer, but happier. Having blown money on buying an AE86, fixing the rust, buying a few carbon fibre, JDM body parts, coilovers, (bumbers, taillights, carbon fenders to replace the rusty ones.) and that's just gonna keep going until I die, but it fills me with joy.

I was already into cars because of Tokyo Xtreme Racer when I discovered Initial D. The series basically made me dump my auto 4-door that i thought was fast and get a 5-speed two door that I could make even faster not only on straights but corners. Plus, Initial d always had factual information which really made me a follower and it turned me on to eurobeat even though some eurobeat is not that great. laugh.gif

Initial D gave me the technical insight of everything i could possibly understand about cars than i ever did before. It built me up to be a fanatic of cars once more, and of course there was Version 3 out in arcades just for the sake of initial d cards. i learnt different things about drift and grip, but the real mentor was Ryosuke, for i had watched 4th stage before watching anything before that. if that makes sense. I know alot about cars than almost everyone i know, plus my family's background has a taste for street racing, no mountains in london though lol.

I had little to no interest in cars before, seeing them as mere means to get around faster than walking.

Initial D made me notice them, and even read up on mechanical data as a whole. Given, I'm still no expert, but I know way more about their inner workings now than I did before.

IDAS3 was also my first real racing game, since the only one I used to play at home only had Mini-4WD cars in it (Let's & Go Eternal Wings).

Freaking both! hahaha. I was getting bored of the new animes so I tried initial d for a change because I have never seen it. The only thing initial d i've seen before was the live action so I didn't think it could be that good. but holy cow the anime is so much better. Plus it got me into cars because Takumi beats the crap out of all the newer cars with a 27 year old car. LMAO.

Before Initial D, I never knew there was such a thing as drifting. I had grown up as a NASCAR guy before then, still am today. I like all(except drag) forms of racing, with drifting being my newest one and the coolest.

It also got into Eurobeat music, which was another thing I didn't know about until then. I was into techno but was becoming bored with it because of its lack of vocals and creativeness and that I was also looking for something that I could consider real racing music instead of rock and hip-hop. Then, when I first heard Dave Rogers "Space Boy" on the opening episode of Initial D, my first thought was "That's real racing music!". Eurobeat music really captures the thrill of racing in almost any form. Rock and Hip-Hop just don't cut it.

And it inspired me to write my fanfic Race of Infinity: The White Eagle 1st Stage(they'll be more as time goes on) a few years later because when I first started reading the manga during high school, I started imagining myself going down the mountain pass Banner Grade near my hometown of Julian in my white 1994 Plymouth Acclaim at full speed, along with drifting down it. First car I ever drove, miss it even more every day! Wish my dad had just given me the car instead of having it traded in for a Suburbon! Well, it had 300k miles on it so it propably had to go anyway.

And the most recent thing it did for me that it caused my imagination to create ACARL, in which Race of Infinity is the prequel to. In my mind, I potray ACARL has being the perfect combination of traditional track and mountain/touge/drift racing.

Growing up with Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero and Pokemon + Digimon, I had been exposed to both anime and tuning cars... not to mention I have sketched cars since I was 2... This anime brought me into the car drifting scene. Before this anime, I knew what drifting was, but after this anime (I have yet to read the manga, planning on it) I got more into how drifting worked and how to go fast... becoming connected with your car and all that. laugh.gif

My experience with Eurobeat is actually very odd. I had randomly found an instrumental dj edit of Running in the 90's by Max Coveri on Youtube. Then, I downloaded a bunch of Eurobeat off the internet from eurobeat.se because I googeled "Eurobeat" (that came from me wondering what it was, since I thought I heard the word before one day.) VERY shortly after, I started watching Initial D (these three former events are unrelated, which scares me! *unamused* ) Then my blood got cold once I noticed that "Running in the 90's" was playing in the background.... ... ... ...That was when I came to full realization that Eurobeat would be something that I would try to get to the bottom of, but never find the end to. Oh yeah, I noticed something, Eurobeat Flash Vol. 20 Disc 2 (the J-euro euroflash hits disc) is the #1 CD to listen to while drifting/ playing racing games/ racing in real life. This is true, and I've listened to A LOT of eurobeat. I would put anything in the Hi-NRG/ Maraharaja catagory in second choice for racing songs. wink2.gif

Oh yeah, this anime has helped me fight against porn... however unrelated this may sound, it became my diversion. This diversion that I would not let go of! ^-^ Thank you God for Initial D (or as the commercial guy says: "INIH-SHAAAL-DEE") awesome.gif

Initial D will be my #1 car thing for a VERY long time~ happy.gif

My favorite car before Initial D: Toyota Supra TT

My favorite car after Initial D: a tie between Toyota Supra TT and AE86

Initial D introduced me to throttle-blipping/heel-and-toe. Spent a few years trying to master it.

More importantly, it galvanized the lesson that racing is not always about the car. Most of the time it's all about the driver. I took that to heart when I started going to trackdays in 2009, spending money on seat time and practice instead of car mods. Soon enough I was beating more powerful cars around Subic International Raceway with an underpowered grocery getter.

A car can rust, break down or get into an accident, and it'll depreciate and eventually run out of miles to run. However, driving skills stay with you as you swap cars and they don't get dull or worn out the more you use them.

Now that makes me want to downgrade my car. awesome.gif

I almost forgot about that lesson since I was always on Go Karts, which were always had even performance characteristics. More or less.

I guess it kind of helped that I was always surrounded by an Evo or an STi when I was at the track in my dinky little 1.6, so I suppose a little bit of the spirit of having an inferior car rubbed off. Not nearly as much as your experiences, I would imagine.

Initial D opened my eyes to cars. It kept me from becoming a ricer. It officially introduced me to Subaru. It influenced my decision in buying a real life Impreza. It pointed me towards Gunma-Prefecture, Japan when I was applying to come, live and work in Japan. I've lived here for 3 years. Initial D caused me to buy Kaido Battle 2, where I first learned about Subaru Vivio RX-R. In that event it caused me to buy a real life RX-R in Japan. Initial D helped me get through a complete white-out fog at night on real Haruna Mountain the first night I went up there with my RX-R, because I knew the road already. Thanks to Initial D I met my current girlfriend also from Gunma. Thanks to Initial D I became a better driver (imo). It taught me how to push a slower car to go faster.

Thanks to Initial D I've made so many Japanese friends in Gunma Prefecture.

Thanks to Initial D, I'll always have a second home, and friends as close to me as family, living in Gunma prefecture Japan.

Thanks to Initial D, I can speak, read and write Japanese. Thanks to Initial D I am aware of Japanese culture.

Thanks to Initial D, I've grown a lot as a person.

Thanks Initial D.

ID introduced me to cars, yes. Before this I had neither interest nor knowledge in anything automotive-related. I'm still a noob now, but at least I did learn a lot.

Never played anything past IDAS3, would like to try V6 someday though. But first I'll have to get a card...... preferably a white FC tongue.gif

All in all, ID is still my #1 anime up to now, and will always be. I've watched more than a hundred series so far, but none of them will ever be better than ID.

ID changed my life in more ways than one smile.gif

Initial D (along with TFATF) got me into cars when I was young. Before ID and TFATF, I only liked European and American cars. Then it got me into Japanese cars. Now I'm an automotive otaku. Fun...

Initial D got me into old Japanese sport cars from the 80 & 90 era. Never thought I would one day admire the look of an AE86, it indeed looked pretty silly idea when I first known of Initial D.

Others thing that Initial D taught me was if u have a strong enthusiasm and stick with it, u will undoubtedly gain the respect of other people and be as happy as well no matter how mess up the others part of your life is. Take Takumi as an example, he finished highschool and instead of aiming for Uni then find a good salary job and settle down, he stopped and work as a delivery guy which probably doesn't earn much but then at night turn into the infamous downhill ace of Project D.

It became the source of my motoring (and other) wisdom and greatly influenced my lifestyle.

The best thing about it is that with every upgrade of my car or every new car I drive through my local passes, I am appreciating it even more. Good example is the "4WD slump" Takumi fell into during the Impreza arc. When I drived Impreza STi for the first time, it was also a bit rough. Now I am over it though and I trust in my lightweight NA hatch! laugh.gif

Initial D also got me into EuroBeat, and m.o.v.e. which greatly expanded my music library, I was into a bit of EuroBeat before but the soundtrack of Inital D really gave me insight into how great of a genre EuroBeat really is. I've always liked anime, and I loved cars ever since I was a little boy. So naturally, when I saw this the first time I loved it. I consider myself a great driver, but like the character Keisuke, I need to hone my skills as a driver to be better. I guess that is what made me click even more with this show.

I drive a lot of Gran Turismo 5 online with a wheel and I drive with other individuals that take street cars with street tires and race on custom made tracks to create a touge scene. The people there including myself are good so if you guys have the game and want to play with us look it up at GTPlanet.net and go to forums>online competitions>clubs & leagues>"legend of the streets." We are constantly looking for people that like Initial D and touge. LOL, sorry for the advertise but just want to meet new people that are a challenge.

Anyway, I love this show because I was getting better as a driver by watching the anime and learning the techniques that they show. Plus lets not forget its just an awesome show happy.gif

Oh no, it actually happened, after shifting at most at around 4000 RPM a little too often lol. The engine is 24 years old, sat for 2 years, and most of the miles traveled were in the city, so it was bound to happen. But I've had the head rebuilt and I can shift at redline no problem laugh.gif .

ID made me even more of a car fan. Before that, I was a ricer TFATF fanboy. I learned you can drive a fast car with skill without having the neon lights and the huge GT wings. Then it got me into liking imports even more. I have briefly experimented with the European cars and now I'm slowly coming back to the Japanese brands. So yeah its been a huge part of my life (along with Wangan Midnight and Top Gear UK lol).

Initial D was my first REAL anime I ever watched...and for me it's the best possible anime! I already loved japanese cars from 80' & 90' so watching it was so much fun for me, because I could watch cars that I always loved.
What was new for me it was eurobeat...it's just magical music that can' stop listening to. I can listen all the track from ID and even more all the time! Im addicted!

I watched the whole series sooo many times that I stopped counting after 10 series marathons smile.gif Someone could say, that it's probably boring watching the same anime so many time...but I would say NO! Every time I'm watching it I'm felling like I'm watching it for the first time. During every battle Ive got goose bumps and my heart is pumping faster. I can laugh all the time from Itsuki and also fell sad with him when he was dumped by girls, fell respect for Ryousuke Takahashi and of course...Takumi!

ID it's not just an anime...it's a pure art for me.
I watched it many times and I will watch it even more times! biggrin.gif

And now...I'm still waiting for 5th Stage...

This is going to sound tremendously lame, but it is completely true. Back in my early high school days, I took Initial D Arcade (Particularly Versions 2 and 3) incredibly seriously and just absolutely loved it. Loved competing, loved getting faster times and studying to improve, loved meeting people and becoming part of the tight-knit, super niche community.

But the main thing that happened was that it boosted my confidence tremendously. I had honestly never put so much time and dedication into one thing before playing Initial D. But after a while, I got pretty darn good at it. I would compete for Canadian records in the arcades and for world records on special stage, the PS2 port. It made me understand that, if I tried hard enough at something for a long enough time, I could legitimately compete with the best.

That lesson sort of stuck with me going through higher education and at work - that constant effort pays off and that you shouldn't be afraid to be ambitious and work towards being the best at what you love to do.

It helped me appreciate lots of the cars below 90's. I never really realized that these are what revolutionized the great cars we got on the 90's but then the go-green-movement cars on 2000... ermm2.gif

Especially japanese cars ranging from 70-80s, those are pure art in my opinion. happy.gif

I'm not interested in mechanics, but always loved the rx7 FC3S without even knowing who called him so, hehehe. But Ryousuke showed me another way to be myself, say, in the games. I play Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 and managed to record with my FC, I use the name of Takahashi Ryousuke to pay homage to the character and my results are a tribute to him. Shortly before the official website of Genki break, I could put my name first, in time attack, downhill, Akagi night with my FC and it was really cool. When I run, I try to act like it and the car games such as GT4 and TOCA 3, were much more interesting. In TXRD2 my results are due to preparations made by me, so I did not understand the mechanics, and today I can balance my FC in the game and I thank the Initial D, so. Still want to have a real FC, but I know that here in Brazil, I think it will be impossible, but who knows ...

Eh, I got back into racing really because of Initial D lol. I raced loads in high school and stuff, but kinda got a bit deep into the underworld part of it and well, yeah. Then, a few years later I checked the manga out and started watching the anime and it reminded me of how fun it was and got back into racing hard. So there's that.

Nowadays I watch Hot Version and sometimes Initial D.
I play IDSS, IDES and GT5 on my PS3

Initial D did a fairly decent job of documenting my exploits while living in Japan in the late 90's. That's right! I am Fujiwara Takumi! What a twist.

Initial D revitalized my interest in small displacement motors and imports(american here). Years ago I owned a couple different 240's(fastback 90 and 89) that I absolutely loved. Eventually I moved back into the V8's I grew up on and have owned a few mustangs since(currently a 91 GT, Vert, basic mods). After getting into ID, I've got a serious itch to pick up another 240, or ideally an RX7(Dad had an 83 GSL that was quite fun.)

That's very strange! I don't think I've ever heard of an Initial D fan who got into it through eurobeat. Normally, it's the other way around. Of course, most people who got into eurobeat through things other than Initial D do still know about Initial D, but I don't think there are any who are fans of the series.

^If I remember correctly: twitchykun was also a fan of Eurobeat before he knew Initial D even existed. Then someone told him about the show and he d/l'ed one of the First Stage eps.

It's amazing what reading these stories due to ID. I remember when it first came out I believe I was 7 or 8 and I remember going to the library and picking up the DVD's or the Manga books. Now I am 21 turning 22 and I know because of Initial D since I was a little kid (which is still act like one) has gotten me into cars and the racing scene. I don't race at the streets, I just can't risk losing my car over a dumb race on the road but I do race at our local track "Miller Motorsport park" with my 2006 WRX track car. and currently I work at a shop called "Innovative Garage." You should look it up on Facebook biggrin.gif I work on sports car usually that are getting ready to head to the track and local cars as well. I have been going to school to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Pretty just saying that due to Initial D i know it's the reason why I am in love with working on cars.

It all started with a simple flash game for me, a game called "Streets of Fire".

Loved the song the moment it came on and it said it came from Initial D, that is when I started watching it.

From there, Initial D pretty much got me into everything: Eurobeat, Cars etc. Amazing, which in turn, got me into Super Eurobeat and checking on things eurobeat related. In between that, is when I joined IDW smile.gif

haha i'm sure it wasn't all due to INITIAL D. wink2.gif

Engine only has a few upgrades and i'm happy with the speed I have. Don't really plan on adding any more engine upgrades till I upgrade to a better block. I only have been upgrading handling/suspension and coolant and what not such as better brake system etc but here are the important items.

Engine upgrades:
16g Turbo
STI TMIC
1000 cc injectors
Cobb Stage 3 tune
Cobb Up/down pipe
Moshimoto radiator
Mocal oil cooler is coming in next soon!!

Suspension:
BC BR racing coilovers
kartboy bushings
Whiteline lateral links

My next major thing i'll do to my subie is taking out the rest of the interior and adding a roll cage. Been trying to make my front bumper a quick release to be able to put on the flat bed. Also adding Canards soon.

It made me respect Japanese cars a lot more, and made me realise why so many people pay so much for true JDM cars even though it can get ridiculously expensive sometimes. ie I seen an old civic type r on craigslist for $15k and nice 10+ year old R34s for the same price as slightly used R35s.

Initial D entertained me, and taught me the real importance of a short wheelbase. Go figure.

Posted by: jon360x Aug 27 2012, 04:06 AM
TL;DR : From a young local racer to a regional racer ( this is kinda like a blog story so ignore if you want >_>). Initial D made me enjoy arcade games and have experience that I can't get with normal computer games. and. EUROBEAT. Also my unconditional love for the Trueno >_>

Well it all started when i was just grade 6 (12 years old)2005 in a backwater town in Malaysia where my mall had D3(Arcade Stage). that time D4 wasn't even out yet.

So i went there every weekend.. listening to the pros who'd come and play there and trying to imitate them. I had no internet and no what so ever source to learn D3 from. so I learned all the advanced stuff from the pros there.. and then, the story of me a young kid just beating local rookie driver began.. lol.. so as every other usual initial d arcade player. I have my friends. I wasn't the best around.. I always had someone in my team which was better than me.. and of course.. younger than me.. lol.. imagine a smaller kid than a kid which is better.. damn.. so we had fun.. I traded cards back then.. selling my old cars and buying new ones... so i had a fair amount of experiences with all D3 cars.. lol then the end of grade 6 came.. it was the holidays...
my dad awarded me with a ps2 for getting good results that time.. and then I discovered SPECIAL STAGE. That was when I just stayed away from the arcade and practice at home.. surprisingly the game physics of Special Stage(D2) was similar to (D3) so i had a huge performance increase while i was gone. The usual continued, practicing at home and going to the arcade to port my console skills to the wheel.

-somewhere in between 12-15-
I often go to the "big city" of my country where my brother works and stays during the holiday. That was when I watched all stage 1-4 on DVD at home. It was fun and I made my D4 card while staying there. it made me had interest in eurobeat alot.
-end of somewhere between 12-15-

Then I left, when i was form 3(highschool 15 years old) from the a northern backwater place to the south of Malaysia. A less "backwater" place than the north because it was modernizing. So my local mall there had D4. I played D4 without knowing the techniques and all (I can say that D4 was my shittiest gameplay ever)
I had no friends here back then when I was a new transfer student. so I normally hang around at home and play D4 on weekends. and then (16 years old) I found no more interest in this. I stopped for nearly 2 years. Since I discovered, yes this is stupid. THE INTERNET. I finally have a PC with internet at home when i was 15 so I spent more of my time on the internet rather than playing Initial D.

-1 year later-
at the end of Form 5 (17 years old)2010,
After my final year of highschool with my exams, a week later. While freely strolling around the mall, bored, looking for something to do, I saw D5. I quickly made a card and played a few rounds. (I had alot of cash stocked up in my wallet back then because I was spending on nothing for 2 years while living on the freedom of the internet lol). Then I went home and researched a ton of videos on YouTube about D5.. and then i discovered this forum! although i joined later in 2011.. So while on holiday break for months. I went to the arcade and practice occasionally. My skills were still below average back then. I only hit like 3'16-3'17 on Akina DH Dry instead of 3'08'xxx now. and that I consider as still below average.

YEAR 2011!
I had some months before my results for my exam come out and then I can go off into college. So while waiting. I wasted my days continuing D5 without improvement.. facepalm.gif
and then off i went to college when results came out.
I joined the forum. met alot of players.. asked alot of questions.. gain more knowledge about arcade stage series.. but I didn't know actual racing knowledge could be applied to a game. well with all that racing line and braking point and all that. D6 was awesome to play while living in the big city during college. But I kinda hated it at first.

I came back during december and I trained my ass off in D5 to get into the records. and well.. I succeeded! Not to mention having alot of in-store battles with players there. Thus, the legend of the young old me deceiving players into thinking a kid can't be this good was reborn again.. derp.gif (no bragging just saying)

2012
and well i still go back to that place i shifted too when i was 15 and still play D5 and continue to train there every holiday. Its a great thing because I get to disappear and come back once in awhile again. So people tend to forget who I am awesome.gif

Hmmm, come to think of it, I model alot of my life around initial d; bought and restored an fc which is now my daily driver, own an extensive collection of super eurobeat, wear v neck sweaters and new balance, and practice driving techniques everyday. the art of driving becomes a much much deeper thing to someone when they look at it from the initial d perspective.

Always room for more 7s around here. smile.gif

Driving becomes a part of your life for sure. There's hardly a light that I stop for that I'm not downshifting and engine braking, I casually heel-toe into corners that need light braking... it's just something that you pick up and it becomes part of your normal routines.

And then on the track, it all comes together. cool.gif

But once I heard that a 5th stage came out my excitement was through the roof grin2.gif Initial D has grown my love for cars, and this so a lot without it I honestly don't know what I would be doing in my spare time.

I won a couple of Drift Races.
Also I lofve playing Forza now even more, Downhill with the AE86 while listening to Initial D Music. I even beat Class A Cars with my small Class C AE86

I was into cars since the moment I was born. I used to think Initial D was very childish but then one night out of boredom decided to watch the first episode and see what the show is about after all. I got hooked immediately and I still remember that excitement watching the first season with no idea whats going to happen. Although barely, I still remember the feeling I had when I started watching Intial D. My life pretty much sucked back then but I just wish I could experience same feelings I did when I watched Initial D for the first time. Many years have gone by, back then I was young and didn't even has legal age to have licence.

Initial D has gotten me into Touge, eurobeat and just overall attitude in the show have kinda influenced my personality, at least my view on car culture. I just love to spend nights driving on curvy roads and taking a small breaks and having small talks and smoking cigarettes and drinking energy drinks and so on it just gives you that special feeling. Just driving until the sunset when you are exhausted from trying to drive fast and trying not to crash your rust piece when the morning comes and streets are empty and son is shining... I guess I got a little bit too excited. Unfortunately no one is into cars in my friend list as much as I am and those who are kinda into cars are lazy fuks and don't have licence yet.

I just love driving at nights more than anything. There is special feeling to it. Just pushing your car on curvy empty roads feel so good.

I love cars and I'm saving up. Getting GC8 GT by the end of the june/beginning of july. Want to save up for GDB STi or S2000 but that would take awfully lot of time and I'm tired from waiting. Maybe next year if I'm doing well with the money. Currently drive a car that Jeremy Clarkson called the most boring car ever but I enjoy it. I think a true car enthusiast enjoys to drive nearly any car.

edit:
Although I was into cars before Initial D, Initial D made me appreciate and enjoy car culture even more and change general view on it.

Posted by: darkmist Apr 14 2013, 07:37 PM
Any other GC8 here????? omg havent post in a while...lonnnnnng time lurker here..

Initial D definitely got me into cars more, even tho i had a passion for car at very young age(before ID).. such as RC cars. Used to modified them to function better? I also used to collect toy cars, that you can built, and upgrade(NOT RC). They had motor upgrades(rpms), suspension upgrades(spring rates), and wheels and tires. .This was in HongKong.. if you lived there, and are into cars, you know what im talking about..

ID also "inform and educated" about the dynamic of the car. Balance, braking, power and controls. Make me go research and applied what i learn. Got mentored by an experience racer to how to handle a car better.

Got my first car.. in dec of 2000... 2000 impreza RS.. Had alot of mods.. some are stupid, i admit.. we all had that stage in life. 4 years later, spun the bearing after a track event. Purchase a 94 impreza, swap wiring from the 00 into the 94, Plus some heavy upgrades. hint... entire car from the jdm land. I still drive the car today, modded the way i liked.

Im in college for my phd(ME), and i am involved in the school's FSAE forumla racing team. Met awesome people who shared the same interest while i was in undergrad(ID 4th stage was airing at that time)... Some of those people i still talk and kept in touch with. So car is pretty much passion and my life... with ID as bonus. I cant forget about the music.. its so energetic.. blasting it at 8am in the morning in slow moving traffic definitely get the day going.

I've had this discussion a few times with both my fiancee, and some other friends.

I was already a car freak from an early age (my father was into cars, Formula One, and other motor-racing). I also learned to drive from a fairly early age--I spent some time living in Brazil when I was younger, and everyone there learns fairly early, like 12-13, sometimes younger). I also did karting as a kid. But, I wound up for a long time not caring as much about cars as I did when I was young, even though I was still casually interested in them. Then when I got back into the car scene in my early 20s, I discovered Initial D. I'd already grown up with anime/manga (in addition to being part-Brazilian, part of my family is from Japan as well), so I'd heard of it before, but hadn't really paid it that much mind. We were already big fans of shows like Top Gear and Fifth Gear...

I was already sociable with a big part of my local Impreza WRX/STI scene but, Initial D took things to a new level. Both my fiancee and I liked it instantly. I wound up having to teach my fiancee how to drive manual, too. We got rid of our crossover (we bought it for the explicit purpose of hauling band equipment), got a sportier car--couldn't really afford anything too outrageous, like an STI, sadly--and immediately started tuning that car. Our next project is getting an S2k to turn into our main outlet for tuning and hooning.

Now a huge part of our lives is hanging out with other bonkers car nerds, going to local meets, checking out autoX events, the like. Initial D singlehandedly changed the entire circle of friends we hung around. It literally transformed our lives!

Posted by: OkamiWind Apr 28 2013, 07:57 AM
Hm, well I was a car freak when I was young. So I guess one thing Initial D did for me was expand my horizons on various car makes (Nissan lover here).

It got me into touge racing and the whole drifting thing.

Part of my GT5 garage is now devoted to Initial D cars... shrug.gif

ID has done a lot for me...

It made me not only appreciate lesser powered cars, but Japanese cars a lot more. I used to be a Mustang fanboy but now I won't touch an American car.

It made me realize power isn't everything and suspension and braking are just as important.

I liked cars before but I really love cars now. I've taken the time to understand how engines, turbochargers, suspension settings, superchargers work, I'm going to learn more.

It has made me check out mountain passes when before my only interest was freeways.

^ Exactly what happened to me, I used just to drive around Daytona (obviously in a videogame) with really high powered cars, the rest being left stock, it introduced me to drifting, japanese cars, technical terms and a large etcetera. Also eurobeat. happy.gif

It basically opened my eyes.

Initial D has definitely fueled my love for cars. Not just a certain type of car but all cars in general. Any performance built car is just amazing. Whether it's a station wagon doing low 10s on the strip or a fox body mustang tearing up the track with high drift angles. I guess Initial D has taught me that everything has potential, you just got to see it and be willing to work for it.

Initial D got me - # 1. To appreciate the car racing culture, motorcycles were more interesting to me back then # 2 and foremost: It got me to fall in love with an anime/manga character by the name of Ryosuke Takahashi (I know it's strange but it's my business w00t2.gif!)

Initial D didnt exactly get me anything but did help me better understand racing lines in general, helping me improve on other games, but the number one thing I can say that I pulled away from ID was all of the many friendships I have today because of it and for that Im forever grateful happy.gif

Didn't know about the series until Tokyopop version had like 2 or 3 dvds out at the time. My cousin and I saw it at a Gamestop or a EB games store and was a little baffled by the find. We come from a heavy car fanatic family. My cousin and I were already into anime thanks to stuff like speed racer, voltron, and dragonball z. At the time we didn't think about watching it in the SUB version so we had to put up with the $*!## music and the horrid video effects of the "Tricked Out Version". *vomits* It probably would have killed our interest in the series if they didn't leave almost each dvd on a cliffhanger. Thankfully, soon after we got the wonders of non-dial up internet and looked up the rest of the series at the time. We thought the music was a little funky but was definitely more appropriate to the show then the ear-bleeding DUB.

It kinda dragged us into the JDM scene, Option Video, JDM Insider, Hot Version, Touge videos, Keiichi Tsuchiya, etc. After close to 10 years we still can't get enough of it. I've got my FC, and he's looking for another 240sx (preferably an S14 chassis), since he got screwed out of his old one while he was deployed overseas.

There is nothing I hate about the original version of this series. Hell, aside from the occasional screw up in the Funimation DUB version and the "toned down" SUBS they did, I kinda like that one too. I've bought the whole series from them to show support for the show in hopes they bring over 5th Stage after it's done airing.

Oh, and I can't play GT5 without my Eurobeat playing as the BGM. XD

Initial D inspired has inspired me in many ways. Many years ago a made a homepage with the projectD name where i would put up pictures of car stuff i was working with (im a gearhead). And now many years later Fifth Stage came out and i actually got inspired to do the same again only with a bit of a different twist, my homepage is now named Fifthstage too smile.gif

Well it kinda kept me going in car culture. I had been into cars as a kid since the late 80s. But, at the time I started watching, I had an 86 Camry as my first car and didn't know much so I was thinking it was an 86 Corolla with FWD. Started where a lot of people did: not knowing enough and becoming a ricer. Later that year I started my first batch of actually going to auto repair tech school and I learned how wrong I was. ID kept me interested, along with NFS games and Gran Turismo. Never really liked the ID music, or the story really, but I liked watching the races. And it was an outlet because I never was interested in USDM cars for the most part. It was a good introduction to amazing cars that I had never seen, and taught me some basic driving principles.

Now, most of my life is working on or around cars, and I still can't get enough. But to this day, it doesn't feel like eurobeat or whatever it is fits racing or car culture. Not for me anyway. To me, cars feel more at home around slow, grungy, hard rock or bass heavy electronic music. Things that sound mechanical and metallic. And that always kinda threw me off about the show.

I was always extremely interested in cars, so when I found out there was a manga about cars, I just HAD to start reading tongue.gif
and then I got hooked on playing the arcade/PSP game, and I also started watching the anime. Initial D is also what got me interested in canyon carving/touge and making my car handle better instead of just wanting to go drag racing like all my other buddies

Found it just after I had purchased my 1989 ae92 sr5. I was already liking driving fast and was very quick to pick things up. More than anything it showed me Eurobeats, I listened to a lot of Club and Dance music on the radio at the time, and I loved the sound. Early on people who knew me well understood that turning the Eurobeats up made me drive faster, something to do with the fast beat of the music.

I learned a couple small things from the show mostly the turning your headlights off at night to sneak by someone with more power than you. I drove a 91 hp 2300 lbs car so I really related to Takumi's struggles in each race. I figured I had to be somewhat decent as I kept beating out car with much more power than mine. I learned every time someone decided they should race me just because I loved that car and was about to do anything in my power to not let it lose, I figured they can have all the power in the world but if I go into and out of that corner faster than them I can catch up.

The show also helped explain things I had picked up accidentally, such as one handed steering for example. I had a very basic knowledge of cars when I got my Corolla. I had no idea how to put into words what or how I was doing those things. I tended to get told I was a liar when I talked about things I did regardless of how many people had seen it or been there with me. It always came back to the fact I drove a 91 hp corolla lol, so again I could relate. The show pushed me into a direction of taking time to figure out how I could do those things and look at how to make it better before actually getting into the car and driving my heart out, oddly enough anger always made me drive the fastest.. got rid of that safety margin I always left there. Funny enough though because of that I hit my first very big wall in getting better. I understood what was going on with the car as I entered and exited the corner, things like what the tires and engine were going through, and I suddenly because that person who thought there is no way the car could do this. Got over that on my own lol.

It's the reason I looked at an ae86, I have driven a few over the years and they feel very much like an ae92 oddly enough, and it's the reason I usually can't afford one lol.

It made me drive less carefully :-)

Posted by: ditn May 20 2013, 09:43 AM
Forgot my old nickname and password so i made a new one smile.gif
the anime got me back into ae86's.
I used to watch them alot here in belgium in the rally, they were really popular and the people driving them were very good.
I then said that i wanted the same car when i was older.
Forgot about the ae86 since they were not used so much anymore since they are not homologated these days.

Then when i was chosing a car for driving on track someone suggested the anime and the light was enflamed once more.
And now i have a track ae86 and this year im rebuilding it as a huge project !

The very first time I heard about Initial D was over 10 years ago, but I never really delved into the culture of cars or vehicles in general, despite enjoying driving games of various genres (Mario Kart 64/Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed). One day, I randomly downloaded Niko's Night of Fire and M.O.V.E's Over Drive songs and liked them a lot, but never really pursued those artists or sub-culture associated with them (ie. eurobeats/racing).

Years later and with the enjoyment of anime and car culture increasing continually during that time, in a random stroke of luck my brother-in-law lent me 4th Stage 4 months ago and I was immediately hooked. Since then, I've watched all of the episodes and am in my 3rd run through the entire series (thanks to Funimation streaming them and this site).

What has it done for me?

I appreciate car/racing culture a lot more, learning about the mechanics of cars and pretty much anything related to them. I've been learning how to drive recently (extremely late, but I never really 'needed' to drive and was perfectly happy with public transportation) and while I'm not surprised that I'm a safe driver and fast learner, Initial D makes me appreciate the experience a little more. In a strange way, my own experience feels similar to Takumi's as I was never really interested in real driving, but am finding it relatively gratifying, despite still not needing it in my life.

It also reinforces how great anime can be when compared to western animations that almost look childish in comparison. The exceptional attention to detail and the distillation of the enjoyment of an experience into a nice compact and consumable form, which is often what I find most satisfying about some great animes. There's also plenty of self-awareness and perhaps even self-depreciation in it, which is a nice expression of humility, rather than a lot of today's/western entertainment that just bombards you with cool things or essentially spoon feeds you characterizations and plot, neglecting any sort of depth that would actually benefit anyone ("Independence Day" syndrome).

It makes me appreciate Japanese culture even more, especially their art and the aesthetic or ideals they strive for, which permeates their society in a unique and fascinating ways.

Very much similar to their other sports or competition type anime shows, where the same level of detail and passion can be seen. Another show I recently got into is Big Windup!, which is a baseball anime. It's not perfect, but the level of care is in there and clearly expresses the same sort of passion that the Japanese seem to have over baseball.

Also, 'Stage One'+Stage Two > Stage Five and Four (maybe Stage Three too, but it's somewhat difficult to remember for me still).

I'm actually debating whether or not to purchase a Logitech G27 Wheel for PC racing games. It coincides more with my learning of real-world driving, but Initial D is definitely motivating me a little more.

It got me to want a car even more. I wasn't a car person until I watched this anime. It got me to like old cars better than all those Lambos and Porsches. ID got me to force my brother to take me to the arcade just so I could play one game.

I love Ryosuke's FC just because of the anime. First time I saw Ryosuke drifting with Keisuke I was like "Dang, that white car is so flawless," and my brother looks at me like he just achieved something. I should thank him for sharing the anime.

I'm now even a bigger Initial D fan than my brother. It both got us into racing games and racing videos. Drift or grip, we'll watch/play it.

I crashed my 1st Saturn SC1 1997 Coupe in a 90° degree turn near some high school while going to a varsity match (I used to ref HS b-ball games) in the rain cause I thought I could drift and/or do a pendulum-swing like the Drift King Tsuchiya ~ after "studying" the Drift Bible ~ in an under-powered overweight FF vehicle going 25 mph into a fire hydrant to the laughing stock of a neighborhood of old ladies laugh.gif crying2.gif derp.gif ~

My experience was similar: I totaled my 1st Nissan Quest 1999 minivan in a 90 degree turn near my high school while going to my high school in the rain cause I had cut in front of a truck within a few yards from the intersection and didn't want to slow down too much, which would be annoying for him. I crashed into the pole of a street light in what was just some unexciting understeering and my drifting dreams died that day along with the minivan.

Perhaps the most exciting crash was when I was heading home at night on the tollway. There was a bumper in the middle of the road which I didn't see until I was again within a few yards from it. I actually swerved around it, and managed to drift a little. Things were under control, except I actually pulled off an inertial drift, which I wasn't expecting. The car swung around the other way, and I didn't put enough into compensating for it, so I slammed sideways into the side of the tollway. Someone behind me actually pulled up, stopped, gave me a compliment on what I did, and then drove off. Unfortunately, nobody took responsibility for the bumper in the middle of the road, and according to the law, it's my fault, so I had to bite the bullet and pay the monies to repair the car. That was the only time in my life I drifted, and it ended badly.

Then, there was one time that I just rear-ended someone in heavy traffic. I guess I can't blame Initial D for that one.

Reignited my interest in cars for sure. Also really makes me want to go to the Touge just to see them driving up and down orderly :-)

Made me appreciate cars more (and their physics), as well as influencing their music as one of my all time favorites (even the new movie music), taught me a bit of Japanese driving laws in an entertaining way, gave a resurgence in diecast car interest, to name a few.

Their music is what I listen to when I go to places (not if I wanna drive, though, as often!), and the mass variety of songs used in the anime make the whole "rival of the saga" much more replayable in value compared to, say, Sailor Moon or Pokemon, where the exact same songs are used every episode (ID does this too, but is tolerable in comparison). The cast is one of my favorites in anime as well, and it's a cool refresher from the regular cast where there's the annoying girl sidekick or at least the high-pitched character who bosses the protagonist around. A mostly male core cast seems to fare well for me, in short.

I could go on talking about it, but these are only a few examples of the franchise's influence.

To be completely honest. Initial D made it damn near impossible to buy a 1986 Corolla without paying out of your ass LOL

But before when I first began to watch it, I have to admit it did help the bite from the car bug spread it's venom faster. It wasn't the start of the automotive addiction for me, but it was a big help. It made me appreciate driving more than just a fast car. It was always obvious a car could only do so much, but the true skill was always dependent on the driver.

So true. I think those 25 year old cars are so expensive and sought after purely because of Initial D's influence.

Due to Initial D, my car value perspective got totally flipped upside down. Before Initial D, I didn't particularly care for GTRs, RX-7s, Lan Evos, Imprezas, and definitely not Corollas (and hatchbacks on top of that). For me, it was Dodge Viper or the usual supercars (Ferraris and Lamborghinis), and maybe Toyota Supra.

Looking on the bright side, a GTR or RX-7 is a whole lot less expensive than a Ferrari or Lamborghini, so because of Initial D, it is now cheaper for me to be happy?

That leaves me more money and time to be happier with other things?

So... it's a good thing. Yup.

The import will not only be cheaper to purchase, but also cheaper to maintain and probably a lot more reliable hahaha
