For those of you who don't know what it is, you won't be able to solve my problem but apparently it makes a miniscule change to the rate at which audio plays to force a video to play at a rate that more closely matches your LCD monitor. As a result, video plays back incredibly smoothly. Shockingly smoothly. So smoothly that I don't want to ever turn Reclock off. Except for the annoying little bit where enabling Reclock causes static to appear in the audio. It's a very low-level, it's not like it's super-loud or the only thing in the audio stream is static. In loud music situations it's pretty much un-noticeable. However, in quieter scenes it's more obvious. Until I figure out what's up with it, I can't use this!! I tried googling and all I got were problems where the only output people got was static--that is, they didn't hear anything but static. I couldn't find any reference to the problem I'm experiencing. I can't fathom that it's just a perception thing. To make sure I flipped between one player with Reclock enabled and another with it blocked and it was definitely only present in the Reclock-enabled player. So it's not my imagination... Anyway, anybody here use Reclock and have a clue? Perhaps ran into this issue and fixed it somehow? I'm kind of tempted to uninstall all my video stuff and start from scratch, but that's a good hour or two of messing around I'm not willing to do just yet. EDIT: It so far only seems to happen with MP3 and AAC audio formats. AC3 and FLAC appear unaffected. Also, it's less 'static' as it is a very quiet crackling noise. I turn the volume all the way up too! However, I don't really notice anything dramatically different. The playback is still as smooth as ever. |

Unless you're staring closely at the monitor at high-action scenes that usually have a frame of tearing or so, you probably won't notice it. For most things I've gotten so used to how they play on a PC monitor that I don't pay it much mind. Reclock does help a little bit, though, trying its best to alleviate the tearing in panning scenes. Anyway, good to know on the test. I'll probably end up doing a full uninstall/reinstall then. | ||

While investigating a wholly unrelated problem I noticed a new version of Reclock released recently and figured I'd give it a shot. I ran it through a few of the same videos I had tested before and didn't notice any of the low-level noise I had experienced before. For now I will leave it on and continue testing to see if I can reproduce the issue, but initial testing seems to suggest that between then and now the problem has been resolved. It's really too bad my monitor is an old crappy TN that can only do 60 Hz... Reclock only helps me with content that's 29.97, 30, 59.94 or 60 FPS. Most of what I watch is 23.967, 24 or 25... so for reclock to work on those I'd need a monitor that could display at 24 Hz. Sadly mine cannot, so reclock does nothing for those files. |
