Well, I had been cooped up with my laptop for a while, and I thought it's time for me to get myself a desktop, preferably customised. The last time I had a customised desktop, it was a Pentium III 700mhz, and had lasted me from 2002 till 2008, where I handed it down to my younger sis. (Yes, that old desktop is still running as of now. No viruses, no BSODs, not even a hint of breaking down, except for the slow loading times.)

Now, since I'm expecting some gaming on the computer, what specs do you think I should get? I would be expecting that's of the bare minimum... Here's some criterias that I would want to meet...

-Only Intel based processors (Personal reasons)
-Only Nvidia based GPUs (Personal reasons)
-Would not cost me a bomb. My budget is around S$400 (That's about US$260. Not much, but my father is happy to back me up if the budget goes over it.)

It may feel and sound ridiculous based on my budget, but mind you, I'm from a family still paying up bank debts...

Do guide me on what I should get. Even if the suggestions are over the budget, I'll be happy to see what I can do about it. A part time job would not hurt me this time round; it's close to my month-long school break.

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

That's a build I did in 2007. That one is still doing me pretty fine right now. Runs all my games and all the new games quite well.

MAIN RIG
BOARD:eVGA 122-CK-NF68 - CPU:Core2 E6400 - RAM:6Gb DDR2 800MHz (OCZ+PATRIOT)- HDD:2x400Gb, 1x200Gb (SEAGATE+MAXTOR)- LCD:AOC LM729 - PSU:ULTRA X-FINITY 500W ATX DUAL RAIL SLI PSU - ODD:LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H - LG DVDRW GSA-H10A - GPU:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB DDR3 (G92 Chipset) - CASE:PT PLANET SERIES Foxconn CAS-WT502E4PS

That's all if it basically. I'm sure a gaming rig going cost you more than your budget, but that machine 2 years old should give you an idea of what you're working with.

Since you live in Singapore, it might be tough to pick out parts for you as prices do vary different countries. $260 is also a really low budget; If you're going from the ground up it'll be practically impossible to build a gaming computer for that low of a price. If you're reusing some parts from your old computer then it might be a little easier.

260$ US for a gaming rig? Forget it. Save up your pennies for this one.

EDIT

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 65nm 2.4 GHz
4GB RAM @ 800MHz DDR2
Gigabyte/Asus mainboard
NVidia GeForce 260
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
550Watt PSU

Without monitor, this would cost ~900US.

So yeah, save da pennies.

Not sure about the prices in Singapore, but here's what I can come up with for $260.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116072 E5200 $69
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131350 Asus P5KPL $49
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820211188 A-Data 4GB $39
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814127362 MSI 9600GT $89
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817709011 Sunbeam 580w PSU $23

Assuming you can re-use your HDD, DVD drive and case, the total is $269. If you can spend more you should get a better PSU though, something like a Corsair 450w or Antec 500w.

I was not aware of the drastic price differences between the US and Singapore's, until I calculated your suggested parts, awdrifter.

However, I did my own search through the net, where sales from the famous IT mall in Singapore; Sim Lim Square, can be found in the internet. And well... I'm stumped when I found a link to one of the shops in that mall itself.

Main webpage...
http://www.sigmatrad.com/

All prices are of SG$ Dollars
The price list of their bundle sets...

http://www.sigmatrad.com/files/37.pdf

And the pricelist

I might have a look and drop by to this shop and see if it's true. The prices does make me a bit stumped. What do all of you think?

(Here's a bit of help for you should you need a currency converter)

Well, looking at the price list, you can get the P5KPL-AM for S$95 (I'm assuming the first number is the price). If you don't plan to oc a lot get two stick of the Kingston 6400 2GB ram S$36 each ($72). Leadtek 9600GT $156. For PSU, the FSP 450w ($50) should be enough. So that's S$373. I don't see the E5200 listed on the price list, so you'll go over the S$400 budget depend on how much that is. Another cheaper alternative would be the E4500 or E2220.

I'm sure anything with a Dual core will change his experience from what he has now. Though with $260 USD, that's a low number to work with. I would have sold you my old MSI P35 Platinum, 1.8GHz Intel Dual Core (E2160), and 1 GB of DDR2-800 for $150, that is IF I hadn't sold it already.
