For the series 1 the codes are either KS13 QS13 or JS13,depending on trim level.

and Keiichi, if you could elaborate on those trim levels that would be great.

I believe the Series 1's are the SA22C and the Series 2 and 3's are the FB3S. There was a discussion on this a loooooong time ago on the rx7club.com, and I've been trying to find it all morning for proof, but to no avail. Anyhow, the general concencis was what I said in the begining. However, some people said that it was mear personal prefference on when you switch from SA to FB, but there we're definitly both.

The first number of the three number set indicates the series, the following two numbers identifies the engine displacement. For example, a 325i is a 3 Series with a 2.5L engine.

Then the letters...
i - Fuel Injected
C - Coupe (always precedes the 'i')
c - Convertible (always follows the 'i')
A - Automatic Transmission
L - Long Wheelbase
x - 4 Wheel Drive
CSL - Coupe Sport Lightweight
ti -Touring International

d - Diesel Engine

The Z, X, and M ("Motorsport") models do not follow these rules, and neither do pre-1980 BMWs.

QUOTE (Wolfgang @ Mar 25 2004, 04:10 PM)
Would anyone happen to know the codes for a 1988 Camry, or a 1989 Celica (Conv., FF)?

Depends on what engine they have. The Camry had 5 different layouts in 1988.

SV21, SV25, VZV20, SV22, CV20

I believe the 1989 Celica Conv is still a ST183(same engine and layout). Probably a "C" after the # or some abbreviation to indicate its a conv.

The Camry has the 3S-FE, just like the Celica. Thanks for the help. smile.gif

Oh man, I knew this was comin. The Skyline itself needs its own thread of chassis codes. There are so many freakin Skyline variations its ridiculous!

Wow, I know EXACTLY what you mean. It's either a GTR, GS, etc... then it depends on what it is so it can either be RWD or AWD, then is it a VSpec or VSpec 2? Gah, I am looking for a list to comprise together.

Since there was no convertible variant on the first gens, I don't think the "3S"(which means coupe or hard top) part was added from what I have seen. I think "4S" is for Convertible models of the RX-7.

"Common" name code:
The first number of the three number set indicates the series, the following two numbers identifies the engine displacement. For example, a 325i is a 3 Series with a 2.5L engine.

Then the letters...
i - Fuel Injected
C - Coupe (always precedes the 'i')
c - Convertible (always follows the 'i')
A - Automatic Transmission
L - Long Wheelbase
x - 4 Wheel Drive
CSL - Coupe Sport Lightweight
ti -Touring International
tii - Touring International Injected
S - Sport Model (Not Sport Package)
sE or iE - Special Production
e - Economy Engine
T - Touring (Wagon) Model
td - TurboDiesel Engine
tds - Intercooled TurboDiesel Engine
d - Diesel Engine

The Z, X, and M ("Motorsport") models do not follow these rules, and neither do pre-1980 BMWs.

There's an E64 that is the Convertible version of the new 6 series.

In my magic book of Chassis codes, it doesnt have the Sierra in it. I think it might be that since the car is british and didnt sell in the country my book was made is the reason for that. Doesnt sound so magical now does it.

here are the basic chassis codes for the s13, dunno if its any useful but here they are:

S13 = Basic Engine code (w/ CA18DET engine)
Rxxx/ FB = Fastback chassis
K = Superhicas 4 wheel steering
P = SR20DET
H = KA24E
M = KA24DE

for example, the u.s. version of a '91 240sx fastback se edition code would be RMS13FB

just my 2 cents happy.gif

Posted by: RakeRon Nov 17 2004, 05:59 PM
RPS13 had the CA18DET, the S13 had the SR20DE/T (depending on the trim: K, Q, or J).

Posted by: roussakov Nov 17 2004, 07:25 PM
More to the Mazda list:

79 to 83 626 - CB22
83 to 88 626 - GC22
88 to 92 626 - GD22
92 to 97 626 - GE22
97 to 00 626 - GF22

88 to 92 MX6 - GD31
93 to 97 MX6 - GE31

The RS13 had the CA18DET, while the RPS13 had the SR20DET.

88-91 S13 was CA18DE/T J, Q, K
88-91 KS13 was CA18DET with HiCAS
89-91 RS13 was CA18DET
91-93 PS13 was SR20DE/T J, Q, K
91-98 RPS13 was SR20DE/T

Anything with P(Also after 91) means its SR20DE/T, non P means(Pre 91) CA18DE/T
The RPS13 had Different Trim levels, like the Type X which had a cool bodykit, while the Type S looked the same but ran the SR20DE.
There are other RPS13s with out the Type X kit.

Awesome list dude, definitely a good reference. After looking through the 3 pages on this post, I noticed that the 90-93 Honda/Acura Integra code wasn't on there (and I noticed as well that someone was asking about the '89 model as to whether or not it'd be a DC1 or not.) Well here's the chasis code:

'90 - '93 Honda/Acura Integra = DA9

As for the member who was speculating the code for the '89 teg, chances are it'd be a DA9 since new model year cars are generally released before the actual year is here (for example, car dealerships begin selling 2005 model year cars as early as the beginning of Fall '04). That's my take on things so hopefully I've been helpful.

1998- Mazda Miata NB8c
1999- Mazda Protégé BJFP
1999- Mazda Protégé 5 BJFW

you need to add to the Mazda list
79-82 RX-7 SA
83-85 RX-7 FB
Since there was no convertible variant on the first gens, I don't think the "3S"(which means coupe or hard top) part was added from what I have seen. I think "4S" is for Convertible models of the RX-7.

Almost correct, the convertibles of the RX-7 was if I remember correctly:
FC3C Convertible of the FC.

The SA22C is correct for the Japanese version of the first generation RX-7 HOWEVER in the US some VIN rules prevented them from using the Japanese style so Mazda named the car FB3S.
The difference between FB and SA22C is the mirrors, the FB has the mirrors at the door area while the SA22C has them on the hood.

I am sorry but I don't recall the VIN rules in the US that prevented them but I can check that up easily as RX7club had a lot of SA22C and FB talk.

The current legacy is BP...

and in the original post, all of the subarus are a little messed up.

The older impreza aren't allGC8- they're GC (sedan), GG(wagon) and GM(coupe non-turbo). 8 designates the engine in the wrx, the EJ20 dohc turbo.

the newer impreza isn't GSA, it's GD for all sedans, GF for all wagons, and depending on the engine and trim level can be GD6 (6designating the 2.5l sohc non-turbo), GDA or GDB.

forester are SF(older) and SG(newer)

basically, subaru chassis are named with two letters- the other numbers are simply trim levels or engine specifics.

so unless it's a WRX, it's not a GC8.

people get way too tied up in technicalities but the reason there's so much drama is because of misleading information like in this thread. a good place to go for easy reference is JapanParts.com- they list cars by chassis code and are more accurate than any other resource i've found.

So wait... Wouldn't this make the Subaru Impreza that Bunta drives a GM8, not a GC8? Or is that WRX coupes are also listed as GC8?

Posted by: gr2 Apr 24 2006, 07:47 PM
yes, WRX coupes are oddly listed as GC8... the reason i listed GM as 'coupe non-turbo'

however i'm pretty sure the only wrx coupes are sti type r's, which are an incredibly specialized trim level anyway. check http://www.j-garage.com/subaru/impreza/gc8/sti.htm, maybe you'll see something i don't.

i'm going to add the disclaimer that i've never been overseas and have never seen the VIN for a 2-door wrx, but this is what i've heard.

*1986.5 - 1992 GA70 (G = Motor Series at the time when an optional motor was offered the 1GG(T)E a 2.0L Inline 6, A70 = Chassis Code

*1990 - 1992 JZA70 (JZ = Motor Series when the 1JZG(T)E replaced the 7M series the 1JZ was a 2.5L Inline 6, 500cc smaller then the 2JZ, A70 = Chassis Code)

1982 - 1986 Celica Supra MA60 (M = Motor Series at the time when the 5MGE and the 6MGE were being used, A60 = Chassis Code)

In Japan the Celica Supra went under the Celica 2800XX but the chassis code should still remain the same.

*the 6MGE motor never made it stateside

I drive a MA70

On the VIN number plate. Which is located in the engine bay, left front corner of the windscreen, or on the doorjam sticker.

The '77 Firebird, and any Firebird for that matter, is classified as an "F-Body" same with the corresponding Camaro.

Outside of the US, it was never a FB. There wasn't a 'chasis' change, so it should remain SA22 on the list. As far as Convertibles, it doesn't change the chasis. It does say after the chasis code on the VIN if it was 'vert but it doesn't deem it a change.

Although, after looking at it, yes the RX8 should be 'SE3P'

Upon this list Mazda REPU (rotary engine powered pick-up) needs to be added, although it is a truck it is RWD, old school jdm, and has a rotary powered engine, this in itself earns a spot! perhaps also older Datsun trucks.

I also did not see Datsun 510's, but maybe I'm blind. Also older Toyota Starlet's (kp60, kp61, etc). I believe some older Toyota Cressida codes are missing also.

And one more off the top of my head, while someone (thankfully) mentioned the ever-great Suzuki Cappuccino, we cannot forget about the Suzuki Swift. I could also mention we need (older) Volkswagen codes also, because of the awesomeness of an old school super beetle, or gti's/rabbit's/golf's, but alas these are not jdm, and fo' sho this is a jdm dominated forum!

Posted by: MattW Aug 24 2009, 07:37 AM
Volvo's are easy as f**k, well, the older ones.

First number - Model (1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9)
Second number - Cylinders(usually) - (4, 5, 6)
Third number - Doors (4, 5)

For example, an 850 sedan was an 854, while a 240 coupe was a 242.

I found out during a round of trivia at a car show yesterday that the 3/S (3000GT/Stealth) codes are:

NA: Z11A
2G TT Stealth (non-AWS): Z15A
1G-2G TT (all others): Z16A

Starion's are in the thread 4x times already yo!

Anyone know what specific Volvo's get drifted quite a bit overseas in Europe, new zealand, etc. One time I found a bunch of videos, and it was a two door hatch chunky Volvo that was quite sexy, but I cannot find any information on what Volvo's get drifted (I maybe want to buy one). It was something like "Top XXX country cars used for drifting" and proceeded to have America, and other countries top #10-20 drifted cars, along with videos.

So that's pretty much the only one, no others? and maybe I'm mistaken but I thought it had a shorter back end, and different front. However, obviously you know your Volvo's better than I.

The only other hatchback Volvo built was the 480*, but that's front wheel drive.

This might be a stupid question, but would the 93 Eagle Talon have the same chassis code as the 1st Gen Eclipse. I am certain it should.

Yes, they would both share the D2xx base code.

What the last two digits would be depends on the trim level.

1.8L: D21A
2.0L NT: D22A
2.0L turbo: D22A
2.0L turbo AWD: D27A

I know this is an old thread, but in reference to the 89 Integra,
the 86-89 Integra was DA1-DA3
