Its like why enforce us to disable adblock? I get that they make money from ad revenue but wouldn't doing things such as closing off sites for those with it enabled or prevent a video from loading would just stray people away from that website? I personally don't want to be bombarded with ads and don't care if they make me wait an extra minute just cause I have it, whats your intake on websites enforcing you to disable adblock?

I usually work around the problem site. There are ways to accomplish the same result without tripping an Adblock detection scheme.

Also this belongs in the computer forum.

Nonake, I've only encountered this situation once in my lifetime, but what workarounds would you be talking about?

You can actually block addresses at the DNS level. It's how I use 'adblock' on my phone, for instance.

You could also use straight-up AdBlockPlus if you're running Android.

I can confirm that. Most sites don't even notice it

I can also use it on my iPhone (hah!) but there are certain mobile sites that block you for doing so, so I've switched to a DNS-based approach instead.

Is it an app, or?

I'm not sure what 'it' you're referring to. However, either one will require that your iPhone be jailbroken as you need to have root access to the device.

If you own an iDevice and it's not jailbroken...then I can't really help you. I don't like Apple telling me what I can and cannot do with their lovely piece of kit. derp.gif

We here in the iDevice community don't use 'custom ROMs' because there's really nothing wrong with the OS in and of itself. We simply release the restrictions on the OS that prevent us from having root access. See, iOS is really just a port of Mac OSX which is just a UNIX flavor...so if we have root access then we can do whatever we want.

If you're asking about DNS-level blocking on a computer though, then go look up custom HOSTS files. There are people who essentially do AdBlock's job except apply it to a HOSTS file that you can use. This way when the browser tries to load a known ad address it instead gets nothing. It's blocked at the moment of domain name resolution rather than being blocked after-the-fact by the browser.

Regarding the original topic of the thread, I have ads blocked at all times. If a site tries to strongarm me by refusing to run if my method of defeating ads is detected, I simply don't go to that site anymore. I don't really consider the host's revenue from advertising as a moral decision. Puppies and kittens are not murdered if I don't contribute half of a penny to somebody's coffers via seeing an ad on a webpage.

Fuck you, Hulu.

This.
Hulu; more like people paying for ad's and wonky player blackscreens that force you to rewatch a minute of ads.

Hulu isnt even trying considering its just an alternative to cable TV that really isnt any different from cable tv. Especially when you consider TV networks will let you stream episodes once you provide them with your cable subscription account.

The moment south park moved to Hulu for the NA area, I torrented the episodes instead.

Hulu is probably one of the worst pay service deals on the internet. I refuse to give that company traffic.

Check out Stan's Dad if you're tired of South Park constantly moving episodes behind paywalls and/or forced advertisements. Bookmark that shit! w00t2.gif
