As topic ..I would like to see more gundam modeling photo. Thanks ~

Posted by: 207 Jul 2 2008, 10:11 AM
then i shall reply your request with my only model. the model is badly painted when compared to any other dedicated modelers. also the camera was sh&% so the resolution isnt the best.
had to paint this much cause it came with blue/greyish plastic
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/9876/smallimgofblitzfrontsn1.jpg
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/3614/smallimgofblitzback1ah1.jpg

with the purple paint and fine paint brush and got this getter result
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/1746/repaintedblitzback2ux4.jpg
http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs129&d=08273&f=repainted_blitz_front225.jpg

the first 2 show no purple bc i thought it would make it look ok. then added purple but it came out pink then added the grey to get a better tone of purple. and its been like that ever since.

edit: do you have any tips on how to safely remove dried paint from the models? i messed up thered on sheild really badly. the paint was a bit too thin and i thought it wouldnt make much difference. clear spots showed up and i just patched them up. now it looks a desert of blood with dunes and hollows.

do u know Tamiya Shop ? Toy City - Tamiya .
u try search from there or the place that selling gundam's paint , u try to ask them got paint remover ? something like that i think.. it can remove ur paint from the models.

But u need to slow slow do if not ur model will get in more terrible =.=''

Btw nice gundam u have... its 1/144 right ?

Posted by: 207 Jul 2 2008, 06:53 PM
ty, yes its 144 but it sure doesnt go far in the mobility of the limbs sad.gif. i cant say i've heard about tamiya, i dont know if montreal even has it. the only paint removed i have is some varsal but i doubt its very model-friendly. the only time i used it was to remove some grey when the purple got too dark. i did cheat a bit to get the model to look that way. some red decals were falling off, so i used paint instead. the only decals on the model atm are 4 on the face: grey, red chin and 2 eyes. and that triangle between the yellow V

What tip do you guys use for panel lines? I bought a 0.3 Fine tip art pen, it works fine on my HG Exia, but I couldnt get to some parts of it (arms and hands).

Gundam Marker, fine tip, grey. I don't recommend using a black one because then the panel lines look way too dark and cartoony. A nice grey is dark enough to accentuate the line and light enough to not look silly.

I've been posting in the modeller's thread, but since this one is only for Gundams I think I'll post some of mine in here.

Woo. Will be building Deathscythe Hell Custom first, because I'll be giving it as a gift to my sister (it's her favorite Gundam).

Hey Nomake thats the 1/144 Exia that comes with the GN Arms according to reviews its slightly more detailed and more articulate than the regular high grade.

Yep, Testors works pretty nicely for me, so I've stuck with it. They have a pretty good selection as far as color goes. It's a lot easier for me to find enamels as opposed to acrylics, and they tend to be cheaper too since they come in a smaller bottle. Also, I have a lot less thinner for acrylics. :/ Check out my collection:

I snagged a whole bunch of acrylic Testors from a yard sale at like 10 cents a bottle, and they threw in the neat little carousel for free. :3

I suppose I'll post the boxes for my models too. I never throw them away it seems.

The Hygog was purely in Japanese, so I had to guess on some parts as to the color and the arrangement since I can't read it. tongue.gif I think it turned out alright despite that. I think the Tallgeese is in Japanese too, but it has that silly English choking hazard sticker defacing the cover. Blegh.

Wrong version. This one runs on a micronized fusion reactor powered by garbage. whistling.gif Awesome on the Testors though, that was my first paint back when I used to do Star Wars and Star Trek ships. I'm way more familiar with it, so I'll be using it when I go to do some of my gunpla.

Kyishi: As Legend said not all MG Gundam models come with the stand but most the new ones are beginning to roll out with one these days. If you really want a stand you can consider getting the action base stands they should be at your hobby shop they have ones sized ideally for 1/100 and MG lines and a smaller version for the 1/144 and SD Range.

Tiger: Yep painting is essential makes the building process more enjoyable too.

In general im an enamel paint user as well but I use Tamiya because its what most the hobby stores stock here in Sydney.

You'll notice theres different decals on the left shoulder this is because when I was putting on the faith feather design whatever it is the decal rubbed off and left an ugly residue on the paintwork i had to respray the shoulder. I had some left over after market water decals from the MG Freedom so I put a Zaft logo on that shoulder instead.

The first one that begun my gundam collection MG Wing Zero Custom

Holy crap, you painted the nuts out of that Destiny! For a second I thought it was an "Extra Finish Version," but then I remembered that the "Wings of Light" version Destiny didn't have extra finish except on the joints/hands! I'm not a fan of the whole shiny finish thing--I actually prefer the standard colors with the "Wings of Light"--but you did an AMAZING job on it. Congratulations.

nice blend of metallics and gloss paints there and it seems like they got a darker transparent red for the Unicorn's destroy mode! That a really good find Nomake!

The secret behind the MG Destiny is simple its all in the matte black undercoat without it all metallic paint schemes would look way too fake and glossy. The black not only darkens the colour and kills some sheen it also highlights all the panel groovings giving it a realistic mechanic appearance.

Posted by: Nomake Wan Jul 12 2008, 04:03 AM
So you're all up on airbrushing, eh? That seems to be what like... 90% of the gunpla community uses. It makes me feel silly. unsure.gif

Posted by: Metamorphic Jul 12 2008, 05:34 AM
^ No not at all you'll be surprised at the amount of people that just build their gundams straight from the box the number of kits that are left unpainted far exceed painted kits. This is because the majority of people that buy gunpla are anime fans not actual modellers.

That's no surprise... If it was the other way around then I would be surprised...

Anyhow, how did you guys learn how to do the painting stuff so nicely? Any tips on where to start?

Posted by: Metamorphic Jul 12 2008, 03:36 PM
Nomake: Man I have a bad habit of misinterpreting things these days.... tongue.gif

Airbrushing is what most modellers choose because it covers a broad surface area and is consistant. hand painting is less favoured because you neeed to have a steady hand and often you would find that theres brush strokes left on your paintwork.

I leave large surface areas to airbrushing and paint all the minor details on myself

Tips in general for people starting to airbrush hmmm

1. Dont buy a real airbrush yet get a feel for the spraying process and buy paint cans like Tamiya cans and Gundam Spray to begin with. Work with the standard semi gloss. Spraying wise the most important thing is thant you keep your distance and spray beyond the surface area you want to paint. This would minimising paint welts at the end of the plastic and thick bubbles.

2. When yu are confident with controlling the can, try working on a different paint scheme like matte and metallic. If you are confident you can do that as well then upgrade to the airbrush.

But yeah its actually harder than it seems and like most things takes practice you wouldnt believe how many kits I have screwed up before

EDIT: I remember Kyishi saying that he couldnt distinguish between the MG and 1/100 in an earlier thread. This is the MG from my nooby days!! the most I did was detail painting and spraying the black parts in (the first time I used spray)...VERY DODGY

Personally I believe my MG would have looked beter if I built it out of the box at the time. The merit I give to MG lines is that they are great for displaying even straight from the box they are perfect for anime fans that want something detailed but dont want to paint it.

You will notice alot of my shots are taken in the bathroom this is because the heater lights give awesome lighting for the camera and the second reason is under the strong heater light I can see any mistakes in the paintwork that i may have missed.

That's what I do. I feel it makes a more personalized finish that makes it stand out from airbrushed models. :3 That and I'm too cheap to buy an airbrush. >_>

Posted by: Kelvin Jul 12 2008, 08:10 PM
Just curious, what camera did you use to take those shots?

Posted by: Metamorphic Jul 12 2008, 08:13 PM
The majority of them are taken with the Sony DSC-H3, semi pro camera with 8.1 Mp sensor, 10x optical zoom and lens adaptor for tele and wide lens conversion

Some may have been taken with the Sony DSC-T5 and I know the MG Freedom was taken with my first digi cam forgot the model number as I lost that one on the train.

Posted by: Kelvin Jul 12 2008, 08:47 PM
Wow I'm sorry for that.

Do we have to wash the runners with running tape water before assembling? I read from a Gundam thread that it is needed. But why?

Posted by: Metamorphic Jul 12 2008, 08:55 PM
its recommended in case theres still excess dye thats on the plastic. If you spray on top of that excess dye it mixes with the paint your using and ruins your paint job.

Posted by: Kelvin Jul 13 2008, 11:35 PM
Meta: How do you do panel lines? Do u do them while they're still on runners or you do them when u remove the individual pieces out? Some lines are really a pain to get in.

Axl: dude u could have asked me over MSN! Its prodominantly matte but for an extra highlighting effect the blues were treated with semi gloss. The rail cannons are pearl metallics treated with a matte top spray.

Kyishi: Panel lines are done in mid construction eg when he head is completed ill do the head. Its too hard doing it on the runner. I just use the gundam marker but i guess it comes with experience all i do is hook the tip of the pen in and gently push the plastic along

Ah yeah since Nomake showed me the custom Unicorn I went out to buy my own to do a custom colour so look out for that when its done!

Posted by: TigerZai Jul 14 2008, 08:27 AM
ooh.. depends lor ... sometime will broke the parts but i dont use super glue to stick them back because the glue will spoil the model and normally i use the glue ( i think ) its wont seem like we had broken the piece be4 ... but i donno where to get it . i borrow from my frd hahaa

I don't suggest using plastic cement on Gunpla. I did that once on Deathscythe Hell's beam scythe and it actually melted the plastic. Never again. pinch2.gif

Metamorphic: How long have you been building kits for? What kind of cutters are you using? Is there any kit you'd recommend for starters? Fwiw, I'd like to make a UC kit, but not sure if i'd just want to build one first, or save myself the hassle and just get a fix instead.

My glue actually melts the parts too, but I think it kinda fuses the plastic together as it glues to them. It's that non-toxic Testor's brand in the blue metal tube.

Kyishi: I have fond memories of breaking stuff! In the manual theres a parts order option thats only available in Japan. I fortunately have a Japanese friend with family over there so whenever I need to get new parts I ask her.

Akira: I started making Gundams since I was twelve but didnt take it as a serious hobby until I was 20 Im turning 24 this year so Ill say three years and a bit of experience. As for starter kits try some 1/144 kits hmmmm if UC tickles your fancy try the HGUC range. Nearly any mobile suit u can think of from UC is in their selection. As for tools I use the nipper that Ban Dai promotes to cut the parts off, conventional nail clippers to remove the stubbs and fine sandpaper to smooth the surface.

With the common topic of cement I will be surprised if it doesnt melt your plastic how the stuff works is that it melts the plastic so that the plastic can bond together. in general u wont be needing cement for gundam kits. But I use it for minor repairs. a general tip is just apply a little bit to the mending surface and stick it together promptly. If you start wriggling it melted plastic will accumulate into a mush at the gaps and itll look fugly as for the brand I dont look further than Tamiya

Anyway guys this is the site I look at for my information and purchase decisions. With current kits they have really helpful images of the trees so u know what your expecting, the whole manual and the colour guide for buying paint.

Okay, finally finished the first of the Gunpla I bought this year. I had to finish it because it's not actually mine; it's a gift for my sister. Deathscythe Hell Custom is her favorite Gundam of all time. She kinda hinted at that she just wanted me to build it to the best of my ability (AKA don't try your paints/markers/whatever on MY GUNDAM), so it's straight out-of-box with only decals applied. I'm actually pretty shocked at how decent it looks in that condition. I really wanna panel line the thing, but... oh well. Here's pics.

There were three really annoying design-related problems I ran into, and one problem that was of my own creation. Here we go, Builder's Log.

-Those red 'vents' on the side of the head? Not red. Gray like the rest of the plastic. I was wondering how the hell they got a box model to have red vents... well, it's two RIDICULOUSLY tiny decals. I actually broke the one on the left side, which you can just barely tell (bottom vent slightly shorter). These decals were easily the most annoying things I've ever done with gunpla. I wish I could've just painted the freaking things but orders are orders. On that note I really hate that Bandai stopped using gold plastic for the V-fins on Gunpla. I want to paint the V-fin SOOOOO BAD. >_< NEEDS TO BE GOLD.

-One of the arms had a polycap hole that was actually misformed. It took lots of filing, patience, and some choice curse words before I actually got the arm piece to snap together correctly. That's just a pain. Oh well, it's a HG...

-The post on the left side of the torso refused to snap together like the rest of the torso. I checked and re-checked the alignment multiple times to make sure it was aligned, and it was... it just wouldn't snap together. I totally forgot about it until I went to attach the left arm and it wouldn't go on. Ended up holding it together with one hand while finagling the arm on with the other. Finally it went on and held the damn post together.

As for the problem of my own creation... I got down to final assembly and realized that I had forgotten to put the chin piece into the head. And you can't put that on without disassembling the whole head...which I had already put decals on, etc. That was a good ten minutes, trying to get it apart without breaking/ruining it, putting the chin in, and then reassembling. Bah.

On the other hand, it was a lot of fun to make, and was good practice for the ones I get to use my own paint on! I'm actually shocked at how good the HG looks right out of the box. I wasn't expecting much.

Hahaha. The shit behind DHC--save for the Haruhi and Da Capo figure--are actually all very, very old. As in, over a year ago I got them old. Misuzu I got at AX2007, in fact. The rest are even older.

I do spend lots of money on gunpla and figures, though. I'm trying to cut back because I have a PS3 now, and games are pricey... I wanna fill out my game collection--and finish building the gunpla I have!--before getting any others. Though it's very tempting to just go and buy a 1/100 Gundam X and Gundam F90V... hahaha.

FYI I have about $300 saved in the bank right now. Next paycheck that'll bump up nicely because we bonused and I'm working extra hours covering others' shifts. Should get up to $600 if I'm lucky. We'll see in a week from now. happy.gif

I see that for a few of the kits posted, there's a few gaps. Is there any way to minimize them? Also, am I supposed to cut the little things that hold the pieces together on a slight angle so that they come apart easier? Oh, and one more, how well do the gundam markers work?

I used the Gundam markers to do the panel lines around the models surface. Meta and N1 can help you with painting smile.gif

What I use to take them off the frame is wirecutters. I find it usually makes them pretty flush if you do it right. Sometimes it gets a bit rough though so I either use a really light file or my trusty X-Acto in case the plastic gets mashed up or uneven.

Posted by: MzdaspD Jul 17 2008, 07:42 AM
I think I'm going to buy a wing zero soon =)

Use a wirecutter or nail clipper to cut it off from the frame and then just use a file and sand off the excess. That's what I do for all my models

I wonder how does those anti-ship swords damage the ships as seen in anime. The swords look inferior when compare to sabers.

Oh wow, that Strike Rouge looks good! What grade is that? Master?

Anyway, I was in my local Gundam addict shop (J-Style in Mitsuwa Marketplace of Costa Mesa), 'cause the guy there told me they were getting a new shipment in when I bought Deathscythe Hell Custom. Sure enough, they had some new stuff... The one that caught my eye was MG Unicorn Gundam for $60 even. Cheaper than online, I was pretty amazed (usually their MG and PGs are way more expensive than online). Tempted, but I've already got Gunpla to finish and my wallet's crying from my PS3 spending habits. laugh.gif

Im guessing its 1/144 because their isnt a MG Rouge IWSP kit available yet. But yeah big improvement Kyishi perhaps you can try some detail painting on your next model!

Not much activity happening with my unicorn still removing the parts from the tree sanding down the gates and mounting them on individual sticks for airbrushing.

Word of advice... when you build and pose the wings, pose them once. Strike Freedom and Strike Freedom Full Burst both have a problem in which the plastic system controlling the wing angles will wear down and stop functioning after as little as one movement of the wings. So rather than relying on the built-in system, you reduce stress on the part by moving all the wings at once by hand rather than trying to move one wing to move them all.

It's something about the gold they injected into those parts causing it to weaken and rub away. Here's a pic. Really too bad they never fixed it, but if you're careful you can avoid it.

Pic of the part when the wings are apart:

The Overflag was based on Graham's Custom FLAG, with the addition of a new Linear Rifle. Essentially, they're the same.

Now, Graham's Flag from episode 25? DO FUKKEN WANT. That shit was AWESOME.

Oh, by the way... Bandai announced they're releasing a special edition transparent MG Strike Freedom. Now, I don't give a crap about the model itself... but since they're using different colors (that is, they're doing it transparent) that means they'll be changing materials. I wonder if the "Clear Version" wing joints will be stronger than their gold counterparts? I'd collect parts from them just to replace the ones on a normal Strike Freedom, you know?

While I don't have anything new to share, I saw this scene in Gundam ZZ the other day and found it highly appropriate. I laughed, anyway. But don't worry, I'm still building. happy.gif

Gloss-injection kits are special-edition kits which literally have gloss plastic as parts. They should look shinier than normal kits due to the different plastic. If you think it looks good, then go for it. For those who paint Gunpla, though, gloss injection kits are going to be a waste. It's going to be painted anyway, so why pay more?

Here's a comparison pic. Gloss-injection on the right, normal on the left.

nice description their Kyishi basically there are four paint schemes that modellers would choose to use

1. Matte
2. Semi gloss
3. Full gloss
4. Metallic

all gundam models by default are semi gloss.

theres no clear answer which ones is better because its all based on personal preference eg I like mattes and metallics

Posted by: Nomake Wan Aug 2 2008, 02:16 AM
Okay, I just got a look at the "clear version" MG Strike Freedom. Damn. They're using the same internal parts and only making the external ones transparent. Meaning the same internal wing gears, and the same wear-down when you attempt to adjust them.

I don't see why they wouldn't. It's still ABS plastic. If you're really worried, then use the marker and then spray on top coat to seal it.

Such a thing as Double Zeta Gundam or such a thing as getting B& from /m/? laugh.gif

Exia and Dynames are neat and all, but I think that for what it costs to get a 1/100 you get more of your money's worth with Virtue... since it's pretty much two MS in one... I think if I were going for a second, I'd get Kyrios instead.

As for where I buy my Gunpla, it depends. If a local shop has a model I want for a reasonable price, I buy it locally (1/60 Wing Zero, 1/60 Exia, 1/100 Virtue, MG Freedom, MG Zeta 2.0). If it's rare or local shops are charging way too much, I get it online (1/60 F91, Powered GM, Blue Destiny Unit 3, Gundam Double X).

If you find a shop that charges roughly the same price as the kit is in Japan (Say the kit is 4300 yen and the shop charges $45 for it), that's actually a great deal. It's when the kit is 5000 yen and the shop charges $80 that I roll my eyes and head online.

Right here, though so far just for panel lines. I do have a silver and a gold marker for larger detail work, but I also have silver and gold enamel paints... so I've been kinda on the edge on deciding which I want to use for things like the V-Fins. I think I'll try one on F91 and the other on Exia, see which one is better.

QUOTE (mazdaspec @ Today at 10:30 PM)
I might get some for the eyes. I hate the eyes.

There's a couple of methods for eyes, with differing amounts of difficulty involved.

1.) Fine-pointed tweezers. Seriously, I had no idea what a godsend these things were until I went to build Deathscythe Hell Custom and used them to place the eyes. I remembered well the old days where I did everything from taking parts from trees to applying decals by hand... and tweezers just made it a lot easier to do.

2.) Trick I saw on youtube once to make neat eyes, but looked kinda tricky: use a scalpel to cut out the green parts, then place the black part of the sticker onto the green plastic piece. Shines through more clearly, but personally I think that's really tedious work. I prefer this alternate method I thought of when I watched it...

3.) Use markers or a really fine brush (read: toothpick?) to paint black onto the green plastic piece. Use the decal as a guide, and just paint around where the eyes would be. While it would take a little bit of doing, it sure beats trying to place a tiny little sticker on there, and I think it would look better as well.

Good question... it's really up to you. It doesn't really hinder posability, so I'd say it depends on what pose you intend to display it in. If it happens to look cool in the pose you had in mind for display, slap it on.

Action Bases for 1/100 and 1/144 kits:

http://gundamstoreandmore.com/ban948215.html
http://www.hobbywave.com/modeling_supplies/display-base/gundam_display_stand_action_base_gray_2.html

I haven't dealt personally with Hobbywave (yet; I will be soon since they have some good rare models), but Gundam Store and More I can vouch for; they're amazing. They ship pretty quickly, and once when they mixed up my Gundam Marker order, all it took was a single short phone call and they sent me the marker I had ordered without any fussing. Amazing customer support, and will continue to do business with them. If only they had some of the kits I was looking for!

There are lots of other places, I'm sure, but those two are the ones I go to first when checking for Gunpla stuff.

oic, wow stands are pretty expensive IMO. I'm going to get another gundam tomorrow or this weekend. Apparently the store manager said they had new stock in yesterday

Just bought the stargazer with a stand for $8 and some markers.

My next upcoming model, Stargazer, won't be made as fast as the crossbone because now, I'll be taking the time to paint and detail some of the parts on the model. I also might be breaking each part from my previous models and start painting them. I'm not sure whether or not that will be the best idea but I'll think about it when I'm done my stargazer

haha, what? they come not colorerd?

Alot of lower grades come premoulded in a selected number of colours sometiems youll find parts that have two or more colours moulded in one single colour.

The SD Exia has to be a case of severe cost cutitng the whole chest piece is blue you have to paint the white rim paint the sides in grey and the lower torso in red.

The GN Sword shield, the two GN Swords and the standard shield were premoulded in blue as well the whites had to be painted on too.

Just started my HGUC Powered GM, skipping the 1/60 F91 for now because it requires a lot more paint than I anticipated and I don't have time right now for major painting.

I can't wait to do my 1/100 and 1/60 scale models though... panel lining the 1/144s is a BIIIIIIITCH. I had no idea how annoying it was until I tried. Holy crap, what a major pain in the ass. laugh.gif

I'm probably going to do Virtue after I finish the Powered GM just to keep my sanity doing a 1/100, hahahaha.

Needs more spinning sphere of death.

EDIT: I just finished building my Powered GM. Good lord, I really dread the Blue Destiny Unit 3 now. I freaking hate HGUC with a passion now. 1/144 scale suck my you-know-what!!! Oh my god this was annoying. But the result is pretty cool, I think.

user posted image

I did most of the panel line work while the parts were on the trees, except for parts that were really hard to get to or parts that didn't actually have panel lines until built (the shield and backpack, for instance, suddenly have panel lines when you build them). HUGE thanks to my friend Delta for suggesting using grey panel-lines for the main body and black for the weapons and dark parts... this looks so much better, to me, than the all-black panel lines on the Dalong-built kits. It looks much more realistic, I think.

My main gripe, aside from how difficult it is to accurately panel-line a 1/144 scale, is how difficult it was to pose it with weapons. The hands are not articulated, and there's one hand for the beam saber and another for the bazooka and machinegun. Posing with the machinegun is easy because it's a small, light piece... but the bazooka has to be posed just right. And to get that pose, you have to fit the handle into the palm just right, then build the thumb around it (yes, the thumb is a separate piece from the hand). It literally took me 30 minutes to get the bazooka to stay like that without either the hand falling apart or just coming out of the polycap entirely. Definitely worth it, though; I really love that pose.

With that, though, comes my other gripe; there's only one left hand and it's open, so you can't do anything with it. Meaning I couldn't pose the Powered GM in my old RPG character's traditional layout, with the bazooka draped down over the left arm behind the shield and the machinegun in the right hand. The whole reason I bought the Powered GM and BD-3 were because they were MS for my old RPG character, so that's really disappointing. And to make matters worse, while the model has the accurate peg-holes on the side skirts for attaching weapons, the weapons themselves do not have pegs to fit in those holes! I can't even attach the machinegun to the side skirt! WTF! Why have the holes if you can't use them!?!?

I'll take more pics tomorrow when the sun comes out; the lighting in my room is sub-par for proper photo taking. Now I have to figure out where I'm gonna put him, though.

Next up I'm either doing my 1/60 Exia or my 1/100 Virtue. If there's one you'd like me to do over the other, let me know! I'm all for voting, after all. wink2.gif I'm gonna put off doing my three other 1/144 models as long as I can (two of them are pre-HGUC 1/144s and thus need tons of paint; BD-3 will just be a pain since it's 1/144), as well as doing models that I really need to use proper paint on (1/100 Serpent Custom, 1/60 Wing Zero, 1/60 Gundam F91).

As for my two Master Grade models, I'm putting those off for a while as well since they'll no doubt take three times the time as my HG models to build and panel-line. I love Freedom and Zeta, but I just don't have the time in my life to start them. Heck, it took me about a week to finish the Powered GM, and it's just an HGUC!

Man, I'd love a job where I get paid a lot and don't have to work as much. More time for Gunpla! shifty2.gif

Posted by: megamonkey@hotmail Sep 15 2008, 12:44 AM
do the 1/60 exia, posing with the 1/100 virtue is tiresome as well, the hands are a bit big so the GN bazooka moves around and won't point straight :\

Posted by: Metamorphic Sep 15 2008, 02:06 AM
I was given the challenge by a friend to make a SD with the same attention I would put into my MG kits. So the natural choice to drive me to do so is the Strike Freedom im up to the legs now just need to finish them off and the wings.

This one set a new standard for my MG lines for later on. Instead of spraying each cut out piece by bulk I took my time and sprayed the parts that were needed to make one individual part. So if I was going to work on the head only the head pieces will be cut out.

I found that limiting the pieces gives time to work on the individual parts with more care. Theres the painting phase. Followed by that I went to hand paint the small extra details on some parts could only be painted with a toothpick.

And of course a part of the painstaking process of building MGs is putting on the decals in an exact manner I increased the difficulty by using water decals instead of the standard sratch transfer type.

heres a teaser shot for the time being. Will upload the completed model as soon as I can! This model will be mounted on a SD stand sprayed in matte black. The stand will have a piece of black cardboard attached to it as background. On the surface there will be randomly spread red glitter pieces glued ont it to mimick Lacus Dust.

Posted by: Nomake Wan Sep 17 2008, 03:26 PM
Dang it all! Just opened up all the Exia parts and got down to deciding how I wanted to begin what I thought was minor paint work. The GN Sword needs paint (I was gonna go for a silver/grey scheme) and the yellow parts obviously need to be gold... but I thought that was pretty much it, save for panel lining. Well... maybe not.

All the parts that should be grey are, in fact, closer to black. Much closer to black. There are a few white parts which they provide stickers for to make grey, but that's just it; the stickers are the proper grey color, whereas the surrounding 'grey' parts are actually blackish. They don't match at all. Here's an example from Dalong:

user posted image

The hip part in grey is a sticker. The leg joint is the plastic. Note that they're not even remotely the same color.

So now I'm in a bit of a quandary. Should I paint the parts that have stickers (there are only three places; hip, middle of arm, and a chest piece) to match the blackish plastic, or go all-out and paint every single blackish piece to grey? If I do the latter, it'll cost more (I don't have a grey paint, and that's a LOT of parts to do) and will take a lot more time (I started this because I figured it'd be fairly straightforward; I don't have a lot of time in my week for serious painting), but might come out better. If I go for the former, it'll take a lot less time, cost a lot less, and be done faster. I'm really leaning towards the former.

Figured I'd just post it up here, see what people think. Now I'm off to work.

Made a decision just now based on scenes from the BluRay release of Gundam 00, comparing parts and how they look in the series compared to one another. It would seem that the chest and hip parts are supposed to be the same color as the main body (which I'll be making blackish; doesn't seem to be any issue with doing that), whereas the addon parts (shield, GN sword, GN vulcans) are to be grey... so I'll probably end up painting those as well. More than I really wanted to paint, but it should come out looking pretty nice.

Stay tuned, my next big day off is Sunday.

If you enjoy the Musou series (AKA Dynasty Warriors) of games, then you'll probably enjoy Gundam Musou (AKA Dynasty Warriors Gundam). I find the games to be horrible, boring, and repetetive with a complete lack of requisite skill. I will admit that when I first tried out Gundam Musou, I enjoyed it. For about two levels, then it was repetetive. Failing the last mission (apparently for getting too far ahead) and forcing me to start from Mission 1 was the final straw, and I haven't played the game since.

It's a terrible, horrible game.

In better news, I have two days off this week! Maybe some progress, now that I have masking tape. Just gotta find the best way to do my paint mixing. Been a long-ass time since I've painted models!!! Almost a decade!! laugh.gif

Depends on what you want. If you want a perfectly realistic one (with the core block system and everything), get the http://dalong.net/review/mg/m111/m111_p.htm. If you want one that looks damn sexy but doesn't have the Core Block System, I'd personally go for the http://dalong.net/review/mg/mly/mly_p.htm OYW Edition.

Well although the first grade of the 00 line is better than the first grade of SEED line, I wouldn't recommend it due to lack of articulation and incomplete accessories. And they need insane painting.

The HG 1/144 and 1/100 would be a nice deal.

Gunpla question: What does those Ver. Ka models? Do they differ from their MG counterparts besides the boxart?

Um, what the heck are you talking about? "Ver.Ka" refers to "Katoki Hajime Version," and as far as I can tell is only used for a select few models...all of which are Master Grade. I don't think the "Ver.Ka" moniker was even used on the Gundam Wing Endless Waltz HGs or the Wing Zero Custom PG.

I think you're confused.

Posted by: Metamorphic Nov 11 2008, 12:37 AM
Version KA stands for Katoki... Katoki kits are basically kits reflecting alternate designs. They might differ in colour, have additional parts, or be a design that was popular amongst the design crew but didnt make the final cut to be in the show like the katoki mg wing zero.

The only similiarity they share are that they are designed by Katoki Hajime

No. For instance, there is no MG Wing Gundam release. The only "Ver.Ka" Wing Gundam release is a MG.

The only Crossbone Gundam release is a Ver.Ka.

The only Unicorn Gundam release is a Ver.Ka.

The mecha designer for Unicorn Gundam (the one in the series itself) was Katoki Hajime, thus the "Ver.Ka" moniker.

I'm trying to say that you have your terms confused. "Ver.Ka" is not a special edition. It is just a distinction to show that Katoki Hajime was the person who designed the suit (whereas the other suits in the MG line were designed by Kunio Okawara).

1.) No, Extreme Blast Mode Destiny is NOT shiny like in Meta's photo. It's easy to mistake it, though! I myself had to go make sure that it wasn't, because he did such a damn fine job making it look clean. Sadly, there has been no official "Extra Finish" release for Destiny, so if you prefer the original colors, that's all there is. Here is a link with a review for Extreme Blast Mode Gundam Destiny:

http://dalong.net/review/mg/mg101s/mg101s_p.htm

2.) Full Burst Mode Strike Freedom also has extra-finished joints; that is, lots of the dull gold parts from the original MG were coated to give it a shiny gold finish. However, unless you really like Strike Freedom (I don't, personally) I would advise against it. There is a known issue with the MG Strike Freedom (any release) where the wing joints will wear down and break, thus making the wings no longer poseable. So I guess if you only intend to pose it once, it's fine... but if you intend to change the wing position frequently, you might want to stay away. Sadly it doesn't look like they plan to fix it any time soon. Also, the 'shiny gold' parts on the Full Burst Mode Strike Freedom suffer from the same problem as most other 'shiny' releases; when you cut them from the trees, the section cut from the tree will be black instead of whatever shiny color it's supposed to be. Somewhat distracting.

Here is a review of Full Burst Mode Strike Freedom, which compares it to the original MG. Enjoy.

Probably Strike Noir or Rx78 Anime color.

hey Kelvin Ill go for Strike Noir! Im very biased about the anime colour because I like the OYW more.

These days im really tempted to get MG Zeta 2.0 and have it posed in wave rider mode. But i need to finish all the boxes i have on hand first. Decided not to buy anymore until I finish them

Any tips on building MG? I need help on water decals.

Posted by: Metamorphic Dec 14 2008, 03:54 AM
All the MG decals that come in the kits are scratch transfer decals or peel off decals

To put on a scratch transfer decal cut out the decal you want mount the decal onto a piece of sticky tape and apply it to the model piece you want the decal to go on. Get something solid like a coin and lightly scratch it on you are pretty much set and safe to assume the decal has transferred onto the plastic once the transparent film piece becomes faded in appearance.

If you are buying water decals (after market type) cut the decal out leave enough cardboard so that you can grab it with tweezers and soak in water. After a while take the decal out of the water and splash a small amount of water onto the model plastic.

Slowly slide the decal onto the plastic and set in place. Use a cotton bud to iron out the decal and remove excess bubbles under the decal but be sure to use top coat to seal the decals in when you finish the project because water decals can slide off if they werent put in place properly.

eyes and certain markings are normal peel off decals

The warning signs and little circles look like scratch transfer decals but they are actually ones that you can peel off.

If you have any other issues you want to know about feel free to ask!

is that regular lancelot?or is that the royal coating colors?
im planning to get lancelot albion or the Type-02 Guren SEITEN Eight Elements Type
when it comes out
i have like 17 gundams models but most of them are 1/144s and a few 1/100s
i lost a few MGs due to cousin smashing it to the floor and trying to cover them up by dumping it somewhere.

Posted by: Metamorphic Dec 15 2008, 12:33 AM
Its the regular Lancelot I got it for my bday from friends. Yeah I wouldnt mind getting the Guren Seiten Hakkoushiki and the Lancfelot Albion as well may as well convert my Lancelot into CC's pink one later on.

What scale is your Lancelot model? The Code Geass has different scaling when compare to Gunpla right?

Posted by: Metamorphic Dec 15 2008, 01:58 AM
Thats right Code Geass mecha are way shorter than Gundams. All the code geass kits are 1/35

Hrmmm, so the the 0-Riser fits perfectly onto the MG 00?

Posted by: Godot Dec 15 2008, 03:00 PM
i think they're making an o raiser so it would work with the mg model
cause then the 1/144 model would be too small for the mg 00

Posted by: Metamorphic Dec 16 2008, 03:00 AM
I think i caused some confusion there I was mentioning that I was going to only buy the 0 Raiser for the time being and wait for MG 00 Gundam and use kitbashing techniques to put the 0 Riser parts on permanantly..

hehehe lots of remoulding, drilling and tiny screws!

But in the end I wasnt bothered waiting for a MG 00 to be announced just going for the 1/100 special kit... I just picked up my MG Infinite Justice I waited a whole three years for it!

I don't think so either. It wasn't particularly popular, especially compared against the likes of Destiny, Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice. Bringing an MG Legend would be like... bringing an MG Akatsuki.

Anyway! So I just woke up, 'cause the mailman was very loud banging on my door. But I forgave his loudness, for he delivered wonderful justice from JA-PAN to me. grin2.gif

Thanks!

Bout the MG RX-78, I think I'll go with OYW the version. The box art itself is worth it  grin2.gif The color of the anime version is lighter than the movie version though.

I picked up the HGUC Kampfer today, will start assembling after I buy new nippers.

I know this is an old post, but I have something to add! XD

I've seen many many custom paintjobs on the OYW RX-78, but my favorite by far was one that reflected the original colors best, as opposed to the washed out "realistic look" that it sports out of the box, with lighter panel lines. The OYW is posable enough that it really is superior to the 2.0. Especially since the 2.0 really looks like it's been done in a retro fashion. Damn thing looks like it jumped right out of 0079.

btw, PICS ARE KEY:

Wow that MG OYW Gundam looks amazing! I've seen many but that one is definitely the best by far!the lighter matte colours match really well and the subtle panel lining has a nice touch to it.

Posted by: Akira Jan 4 2009, 02:15 PM
Yeah it's great!
That's how I plan on doing most of my kits from now on!

I have a GM vs. Zaku II diorama that I plan to use that technique on first, or maybe my GP02A.

Either way I never liked the colors used on the OYW right out of the box, I liked what they were aiming for but the faded blues and reds? Yuck..

Yeah I paint as I go. I paint in small batches and each part is treated individually. The parts get cut out when I need them. It puts more care into the building process and paint supplies last longer than a mass spray

As some of you who have seen last Friday's pre-Eronight special on the radio, I received a very nice gift from Nomake Wan - a MG Gundam SEED Launcher/Sword Strike Gundam.

I pretty much JIZZED IN MY PANTS and proceeded to work on it. It even has the standard Strike parts (shield and beam rifle), and me being the person I am, decided to combine EVERYTHING for lulz.

Now I haven't put the decals on it yet, but these are the results biggrin.gif

Gundam Marker. Use grey on light colors (white especially) and black on dark colors (like the gunmetal of weapons, MG internal frames, etc). Nice thing about the gundam markers is that if you mess up, no biggie, just wipe the area lightly with a napkin and all that'll be left is a nice panel line.

Oh man, I'm such an idiot. Last night I went to build Exia TransAm colors, since my experiment to test melting the plastic didn't work out. I figured, I'll just straight-build it. Well, I got to the third piece... E23... and as I was trimming the leftover gate material from it, I noticed that the trim didn't look flush. I thought that was odd, since I was sure I trimmed it squarely.

Then, to my horror, I realized I'd trimmed a peg right off. sad.gif

Holy crap, stop making me want to build my MG Freedom! laugh.gif That looks really good, even if it's just basic panel line stuff.

And no, I didn't get the HG Exia, I got the 1/100 for Christmas a while back. I'm not sure how it's holding up because after breaking that piece I stopped building. I'll get back to it when the replacement shows up.

Yeah, I saw that 00 Raiser Trans-AM Colors mod on Ngee Khiong and freaking loved it. I wish mine would look that good, but I'd have to learn airbrushing and stuff to pull off that sort of effect on my 00 Raiser. I don't have the patience, time or cash to do that, so I'll just do minor mods and such. happy.gif

Just one thing you have to be careful about, and that's that Unicorn is very delicate, and doesn't have very good poseability by default. However, you'll find many a thread on places like HobbyFanatics which will walk you through making simple modifications to the frame to allow for more poseability, especially in the knees.

Still, it's a pretty badass model.

The last of my Strike Freedom, Infinite Justice set I had a long thought about it... originally I stuffed up construction on the right hand so the rifle was cemented onto it so that it had weaponary. A'ight, I have some progress made! The part from Bandai showed up the other day so I started on it. This is how far I got before stopping for the night.

user posted image

As you can see, I skipped assembly of the torso and moved on to the arms. Reason? I wasn't aware how much modding would be required to do the LED-related stuff I have planned for this build. I need a dremel so I can cut out the whole center dome part (a clear plastic piece goes over it anyway, so removing it won't affect looks once the LED is set up), and I need to probably drill some holes in the back piece for the GN Drive (again, there's a center opaque plastic piece that has a clear part over it; removing the opaque part won't affect it much). So until I've done the modifications to the torso, it'll stay apart. I'm moving on to the arms, legs and weapons since those aren't lighted. At least I don't have to modify the head as much as the torso.

I'm gonna set up the whole LED thing in a way that'll make the battery easy to replace and allow me to switch it on/off.

Are you lighting up all the GN Condensors or just the chest? if its just the chest forsake the wiring and use a light box sytem similiar to the ones presently used for lighting the eyes for various 1/60 kits.

If you are thinking of lighting up the whole body I'll recommend a system similiar to the 1/60 Strike Freedom Lightning Edition (oops forgot to add that to my list I dont display it on my shelve because of its noobish craftmanship).

The wiring connects together in the skirt armour and has connection pins to attach to the stand where the batteries and switch are located. Here's a copy of the manual from 1999 a complete wiring plan for your disposal haha. If you need larger pics of the manual dont hesitate to PM me or request for t here

Holy crap Meta, don't link all those things from Hobby Search! Talk about bandwidth/page rape! laugh.gif

I'm basing my build upon the series. In the series, if you look closely (easy to do since I have the 1080p raws), you'll notice that the only glowing parts are the main condenser, GN Drive, and head. The GN Condensers on the arms and legs and weapons do not glow in TRANSAM. As such, only the chest/back and head will be lighted.

If you have suggestions or wanna talk ideas back and forth, hop onto IM or something, let's talk! Personally, from looking at the chest, a light box isn't gonna fit; it's a 1/100, not a 1/60. But then again, I have to mod it anyway to get light to show through for the chest parts, so we'll see.

ooh! MG God Gundam Ive been meaning to buy that kit for a while.

God Gundam is a pretty nice looking kit, but be warned that it's a HUGE pain to build. Definitely the least fun build I've done, screws all over the place and only the one in the center of the torso goes through a nut. It's a cool idea in theory, for really tight joints, but honestly it just made me terrified of stripping them out and the joints end up just feeling awful. It's pretty poseable (i like how the chest presses back into the upper body slightly so it can cross its arms) but it's definitely not something you're going to want to try to pose any more than you have to tongue.gif

If we're doing wishlists, that new G-Fighter MG is absolutely blowing my mind. Dying to get my hands on one of those with the RX78 2.0 smile.gif

Aside from that, waiting to hear more about that White Glint model that's coming out...though that's not gundam.

Posted by: Metamorphic Feb 16 2009, 12:33 AM
lol im fine with kits with screws.. the biggest biatch to build is the MG Nu Gundam hehehe. Screws left right and centre for joints and die cast metal parts for the waist and ankles for support. LOL in the end of all that all it can do is stand up straight (very well too!) the Nu Gundam isnt very poseable not that being able to stand up is a bad thing lesson learnt dont get the full burst strike freedom the chrome parts that they used for the ankles dont hold up the models weight well the plastic parts used in the regular release would have been a better option.

CRAPPY PHONE PICTURES TIEM!!!
I'm a noob to the whole Model making thing, and just got my first models in 4 days ago.
I've finished two, Both HGUC 1/144th scale: The Guncannon, and the Cold Climates Type GM

My problem is that I don't have an X-Acto knife or plastic nippers, so I have to snap the pieces off the trees, then live with the plastic pulls until I become anal enough to sand them off.

Awesome stuff there r3d$unz!! Im planning to get myself the new PG 1/100 Gundam Astray Red Frame as my first and last Perfect Grade (its hella expensive so there is no way I'm buying another one of these laugh.gif). Hopefully I'll post it up by summer (if or when I get it)

Posted by: r3d$unz Mar 17 2009, 10:53 AM
PGs are real expensive, but from what I hear totally worth the cash, The PG Astray lookes awesome, but I think i'll wait till I get a larger collection of MGs before I aim for a PG

Posted by: K3vin Mar 17 2009, 01:35 PM
Thats what I hear also, the reason why I want to try a PG is because the owner of the local anime store I go to has display cases set up with some of his models that he makes in his free time and I saw a custom painted PG Strike and I just kept looking at it (size, detail, etc..)...So yea I'll wait till I earn enough money during summer and then I'll get it

Posted by: r3d$unz Mar 18 2009, 03:54 PM
OK, here we go, Im not sure how many photos I took during the making of it, but I'm pretty sure I may have to double post, please dont warn me ermm2.gif

So we'll start right from the beginning, with the runners happy.gif

user posted image

I always put them inorder first before I start, easy access and all

Now we start with the torso

user posted image

I use the the "shaving" technique, basically I cut the parts off the tree using a specialised cutters, then using an exacto knife, I would "shave" the rest of that the left over stubble off

Adding the different colour parts to the chest and neck, I am really liking the "designer" colours they've used here, its a nicer shade of blue, and the yellow is pretty faded compared to the original colours

user posted image

Heres the entire upper chest area complete (arms, chest, head) and my first (of two) negatives: The stickers used on the "V" on the gindams head is ridiculously difficult to put on, and doesn't look good (I'm still not too confident with painting my Gundams)

user posted image

a closer look

user posted image

A closer look at the arms, unlike the antenae, the stickers used in the joint work pretty well with the clear plastic, the clear plastic parts are also somewhat magnified, so it makes the stickers undeneath look pretty cool

user posted image

The same deal with the legs, I would have been nice if the grey area on the side of the legs were seperate grey parts rather than stickers, but its to be expected of a HG, also the ankle joints are very cool, the amount of articulation in them alone is worth the money I paid for this model whistling.gif

user posted image

Heres a closer look at the legs, I like the "ball" joint at the top, it alows you to roatate the leg 360 degrees without much effort, or worries that it'll wear the joint out.

user posted image

Hmmmmm....I can't be too sure....but I think something's missing......laugh.gif

Here's 00 (minus GN drives) in all its 1/144 glory

with the GN drives on

The other negative thing is that during jet mode, 0 riaser's wings can barely stay on the 0 raiser's body, so more dynamic poses with the seperately will be difficult.

PHEW! long post is long, sorry for the huuuge amount of info I just put up, hope you enjoyed it, depemding on feedback I may do one on my MG unicorn.....but only if I get good feedback tongue.gif

Nice! Are you going to add panel lines? It should look a lot better.

Posted by: Nomake Wan Mar 19 2009, 12:35 AM
Agreed on the panel lining. All I did to my Powered GM HGUC was panel line it, and it made a HUGE difference (my brother straight-built his Powered GM years ago, so I knew what it looked like without any lines). It really brings the model to life. Even if you don't do any other painting or modding, the lines should be scribed. wink2.gif

Also, perhaps try adding some material to the inside of the holes where the 0 Raiser's wings go. Like, thin felt/cloth that's adhesive on the back. Cut it to size and put it in there, just to make the link tighter. That way you can do the TRANSAM RAISER pose.

Posted by: lance Mar 19 2009, 04:00 AM
i find doing gundam models, lines ARE A MUST!
but that 0 raiser looks pretty nice. I havnt built a model in years, cant belive how nice these 1/144 models are these days, really want to get my hands on a burstmode MG destiny, but its so expensive sad.gif

Posted by: r3d$unz Mar 19 2009, 09:03 AM
I've actually lightly line panelled the 00 Raiser, I guess you can barely see it in those pics, it was a light gray, so I may use a darker colour since I still have to add decals.

N1: thats a pretty good idea! I was thinking of destroying a few wire hangers I have to pose 00 raiser in the middle of docking mode I'll update soon if I do it or not =P

I am! I want to get my first PG and after hearing that the Red Frame is coming out (well its out now) I settled on getting it. Now I'm just waiting to get my tax return and then I'll be able to get it (damn recession! pinch2.gif). I just hope building PG aren't too hard...

I've heard that the PG Red Astray was an easy build compared to other PG models, so hopefully you'll find it easy

I've been busy and haven't touched Gunpla lately, but I finally completed my MG Strike E. I haven't done anything with the IWSP unit though. I'll finished them off this few days since my training has come to an end.
