I'm not sure if this affects all cars, but this could be the lash adjusters/ tappets. With old oil clogging them up, it often makes a tapping noise.

When was the last time you changed your oil?

Failing that, ive heard that injectors also make tapping/clicking noises...

Haha, nice try, but FAIL, mitsubishi lancers are famous for noisy / ticking tappets and impreza turbos are famous for noisy / clicky injectors.... wink2.gif

(as for rust, that depends on what country your in and if they use salt on the roads or not)

You need to adjust your valve's tightness, and part of the problem here is that you need a Volvo dealer for the adjusting kit.
Slight ticking is better than none however as then you will be burning your valves which is not good tongue.gif

Last time I saw that kit for sale it had a hefty price and I had free access to another provided I did the job myself so it was easy to fix in my case.

The ticking could either be noisy/failing lifters, or your car being starved of oil either due to failing oil pump or crappy oil. My Hyundai was ticking noticeably shortly before the timing belt failed. whistling.gif

Maybe your cam gears or the chain that drives them (if your motor is oldschool like that) is bad, but yead definetly on the cylinder head holmes, take that shit appart and port it!!!!

If it wasn't my only form of transportation, and I had a garage, I would.

It isn't hazardous for your Volvo yet though, but you should adjust those valves like I said.
You will increase the wear on them and lose some power in present condition, but they are solid and keep on going tongue.gif
B230 motors can take quite a licking and keep on ticking just like the old B20 motors.
