Others turbo sound like FC,FD R32,S13..sounds like very "course" Evo3 mis-firing system seems to be the noisiest but i was used in rally.. so.. can anyone tell me what type of turbo-charger.. the name and the specs used in LEVIN 86 in stage 2? (dun tell me it's 4A-GEU... that's the engine model..but i wanna know bout the bolt-on turbo) Hopes that if anyone can answer my questions... thankx a million |

Thats NORMALLY ASPIRATED
Did they ever do a turbo charged levin ? I think you might find that they only did supercharger kits for that engine, hence why a supercharger would have different sound - superchargers run off a pulley and due to the SC belt spinning at high RPM the belts whine ! Any highly tuned turbo engine will sound course compared to a tightly tuned NA application. The difference is you will always hear an NA engine above the exhaust. On a turbo charged engine you will always hear the exhaust over the engine. I dont think you can say that any of those engines are corse either, especially the RX-7's which have a gorgeous smooth almost melodic thrum to them.
Dont get a miss fire confused with the popping and banging you get from turbo charged cars with free flowing exhaust and high fuel delivery. Miss fire means the car is hesitating and wouldnt perform properly. Popping and banging is petrol igniting in the exhaust system, fuel delivery is so high that some petrol dosnt even get burnt in the cylinder and is thown through the engine into the exhaust system where it ignites on the hot exhaust manifold ! My turbo pops and bangs like a bitch, thanks to a free flowing exhaust and high fuel delivery - this is also the reason why my car will shoot flames on hard runs (not becasue its broken as somone told me once) Regards Bullwinkle

IDW Senior Member Group: Members Posts: 89 Member No.: 55 Joined: Oct 22nd 2002 Location: Update Profile | The misfiring system used in the Lan Evo (causes a great deal of turbo damage) is very similar to the ones of the WRC, but in the WRC, the turbo is changed after every stage which is around 5-10 mins. But when you are running the car rich (more fuel than air in fuel/air ratio) the turbo wont really be affected. On the other hand, the exaust will shoot fire because excess gas is dripped into the exaust manifold and there might be a chance you get exaust or header damage |

I am a initial D fans and very admire Trueno and Levin... anyhow.. i wish to get a Levin but i wanna modify exactly like the Turbo-charged Levin in Last 2 episodes in Stage 2.. it's a turbocharger instead of supercharger.. although in the cartoon.. it displays the bolt-on turbo on and off with some number written on the unit.. but i dun think i can find that kinda turbo here in malaysia cause i believe it's oredi outdated and old.. all i want is to get a turbo car with that kinda noise.. in the cartoon... I know the Mazda Rx7 sounds great.. but somehow i dun like the "coarse" noise of R32 and S13.. i want the sound of "phee".... "phee"... like in that LEVIN 86.. Can anyone recommend me how to get those? I also noticed that the LEVIN Turbo blast at the pressure of 1.5bar... wat does that mean? does that mean the low bar pressure turbo will emit the "phee".. "phee" sound more often? (like the one in stage 2)... Takumi drv a Trueno with 4A-GE TRD engine.. Natural Aspiration.. i wonder how to get it also? For your information... we have 50 customers on the waitting list to import a Trueno 86 from Japan... second hand price around USD7200 (Ringgit Malaysia 30 000).. I wonder whether it worth the price or not becoz AE92 also sell around that price also.. Really enjoy learning from you all.. thankx and hope that some1 can hlp me again.. |

IDW Senior Member Group: Members Posts: 89 Member No.: 55 Joined: Oct 22nd 2002 Location: Update Profile | the phe phee sound that u speak of usually comes form the belt drives of superchargers. if the sound is all u really want, turbo wont produce that sound. any way, the TRD A- spec racing engine in the former "86" prolly doesnt exist nemore considering it was built in the 80s racing circut. 1.5 is the psi the turbo is set to spool at, it can be altered depending when u want it to spool and the amount of lag u get. |

You could get this engine, but you need to know people and the cost is so ridiculous. And the best sound in the whole show is the downshift on Nakazato's Skyline, I love that sound |

Why buntai wanna cut it? In 3rd stage... the guy who drv FD said that the TRD engine is a "funny" engine.. used in Recreational MUV car.. not available to the market but somehow someone manage to get it.. (I thought TRD still market 4 troter engine til now...) Another doubt.. why that the Supercharged LEVIN 86 has to sway around after the turbo blast..? The FD guy explained but i still dun understand.. I only sway my car to slow down in a straight road.... does it mean that LEVIN 86 wanna slow down in the race also? |

Like an eagle! Group: SITE OWNER Posts: 8,014 Member No.: 1 Joined: Sep 15th 2002 Location: San Leandro, California | The Turbo Levin 86 sway after the corner because the driver doesn't want to slow down, instead he steps all the way down on the gas pedal without even giving the car a break to regain traction after the turn. So he sway the car a little and try to gain some traction. By doing so he doesn't lose as much time as if he slows down. It's my understanding from what Ryousuke said. So it might be wrong from the actual explanation. |

At least I think thats why. But how does swaying back and forth help keep is RPMs up? Anyone know the answer to this question? |

FD guy also added that... he sways becoz he want to return to original speed..and something like to cover the turbo lag weakness of his car.. Anyhow... i didnt know that's a supercharger..becoz both the Japanese and HongKong version... the FD and FC brothers said it's "te guan" turbo (in Chinese words.. it means paroxysmal/sudden turbo) they think it's a outdated product also.. Hmm... i wonder why they say that... |

tofu boy, sorry i dont have a clue what your talking about ? Mis Fire is a bad thing, it means that the car isnt running properly, this would cause it to lurch and splutter - rally cars DO NOT run this (what ever you think it is) If you are talking about anti lag then yes this does cause the car to shoot flames but this DOSNT affect the turbo in the slightest - it also ISNT fitted to road going EVO's. WRC cars also have stand alone wastegates which vent excess boost through a seperate pipe to the exhaust away from the turbo - no damage will happen to the car the engine or the turbo, this is simply what i expalined above hot exhaust and high fuel being ignited in the exhaust system. Also WRC turbo's dont change their turbo's every stage, 95% of the stages are run in sucession. They are also only allowed 1 service in the whole days rallying. Thats why rallying is so great as its mans machine standing up to amazing abuse.
cheevoon, 1.5 bar is alot of pressure for a road going turbo charged car, that Pee Pee, is proably a dump valve. The HKS SSQV will produce this exact sound.
Takumi_Fujiwara, quite a common conversion in the UK and Europe, normally found on alot of A11 MR2's however it isnt very well regarded comared to other methods and is very hard to set up properly.
Still waiting to watch this, but from the sounds of it he is trying to perform a scandinavian flick - a rally driving move used to upset the car to get it to slid through a bend. Basically swing away from the turn then swing in, this forces the rear tail to break loose under power. Regards Bullwinkle

IDW Expert Member Group: Members Posts: 117 Member No.: 57 Joined: Oct 23rd 2002 Location: Update Profile | thankx for ur experience knowledge and advice to clear my doubt... HKS SSQV is it a turbo charger or supercharger?... one day i will get that.. but at the moment.. to u hv any cheap options that produce the same sound like LEVIN 86? cause i wanna modify my Nissan Sentra generation (N13, which look like Levin a bit) a to produce that kinda sound.. Please kindly advice me on how to do this... When I drove my AE71... that car was heavily modified NA with a rather big and noisy exhaust pipe.. eversince then... my AE92 and N13... i juz put in a standard pipe coz i wan my car to be quiet in order to overtake my rival unexpectedly.. how much power diffrence a car with a big and a standard pipe..? thankx a lot... |

The HKS SSQV is a dump valve. It is somthing that is fitted to cars to vent excess boost out of the intake system when the throttle plate is closed. Without this then excess boost has nowhere to go but back the way it came usually back into the turbo compressor. This is bad as this can actually shatter the compressor blades. This is the part that you want to fit to your car if you want that Pee Pee sound, obviously you will need a turbo charged car to run one. Also another consideration is that you CANNOT use this if you have a car that uses an air flow meter. Here is a dump valave ... but it aint cheap. http://www.hksusa.com/products/?id=792 In regards to your question, any sutible turbo will give you the boost needed to make a pee pee using that BOV. Obviosuly if your car dosnt have a turbo then you have alot of work and trouble on your hands.
A decent exhaust makes alot of difference especially on turbo charged cars, less so on normally aspirated cars. Standard means quiet, but it also means restricted flow, which dosnt help power. Depending on the make and layout of the system you could get anything from -4bhp to +14bhp or more ! Yopu ideally need to source a decent one from a respected tuning company, like HKS, BLITZ who have proven products.
