QUOTE (Tessou @ Apr 24 2015, 05:30 PM)
That's still fat for a Miata. MazdaFord lost it with the third gen when it came to what a Miata is.

The misinformation in this thread is appalling. The NA was 2100 pounds. The NB was 2350 pounds, and is considered the best generation of Miata. The ND, being 2300, is not fat at all.

Track cars are lucky if they can get under 2500 pounds, and that's if they strip out everything (every unneeded nut, every piece under the dash, carpeting, seats, etc.). A car which weighs under 2500 pounds with full interior and trim, with today's modern requirements for crumple zones and safety, is pretty damn good.

For reference, full interior stock cars:
Mini Cooper S weighs 2700 lbs
Honda S2000 weighs 2800 lbs
Toyota GT86 weighs 2800 lbs
Porsche Boxster weighs 3000 lbs

And these cars are all considered light.

Coming in at 2300 with full interior, the ND is anything but fat.

I don't care if it's "light". That wasn't my point in the post you misread. All of the electronic assists and garbage features completely detract from what the car was designed to be.

Also, pig ugly.

That will be the problem for most cars post-2000 (or earlier) in my opinion. Don't get me wrong: they're nice when they work as desired, but there's something awesome about direct, mechanical systems... again, when they work as desired. Both have their pros and cons, which I won't get into here.

At the end of the day, appearance and driving preferences are subjective.

Meanwhile, 2800 makes this Miata a big fat pig.

Rudy Posted on Apr 24 2015, 04:50 PM
What? The BRZ is 2,800... the Miata is 2,300.

... how am I misreading anything? I see no mention of any assists or electronics. All that you mentioned was weight, to which I pointed out that this is far from "a big fat pig"

I'm sure your prejudice against things like electric steering would change if you actually got to drive it. The 991 is still as engaging as the 997.

IIRC cars are required to have those controls these days, so I don't see your point. I'm sure they can be turned off in the case of the MX-5.

You misread the last one where I was clearly deriding the NC as the death of the model. Lookit all dem unnecessary features! Yes, Ford no longer controls Mazda production, but the results are still there. This is a hideous mess of a car. I don't see this and think MX5.

Please continue attempting to argue against an opinion. I love watching members waste time for no reward.

That and we were talking about the NC, and suddenly a certain someone brings up the ND instead...

Can't turn off electric steering or drive by wire

Sure. There was no mention of the NC by the time you posted. Using that argument, you could have been talking about any Miata. Considering how the thread was about the ND, a normal person would infer that you were calling the ND a fat pig, and therefore knew nothing about cars.

Would you like me to copy your tactic of listing semi exotic cars I've driven as a show of bragging and knowledge?

Clearly said THIRD GEN. awesome.gif

THIRD gen... on the SECOND post. AFTER you called "this Miata" a big fat pig, erroneously quoting weight awesome.gif

Perhaps you should learn how to structure arguments chronologically while I learn how to read.
My point was purely to weight. You called "this miata" a big fat pig. I called you a big fat idiot for thinking 2300 is a big fat pig.

This thread is like the current generation of Miata: deviating.

We all struggle sometimes with reading comprehension. Even if you disagree with the interpretation, it's best to just shrug it off on trivial things like this. On this particular subject, I think we can all agree that the NC doesn't really live up to its predecessors. It's still a capable car, but it lost some of its defining character.

Again you misconstrued things. Weight was regarding the ND. Mazda losing their way was for the NC forward.

What else can I say except "learn how to read"? I can shoehorn a rule akin to Rudy's "sarcasm indicator" to help the less fortunate be able to follow a topic, but that would just be as silly as this topic is becoming.

Next post on this tangent gets a crimson candy. Back to the Miata and its merits / faults.

On topic it is!

I like the car. Its devilishly light, and looks interesting/decent to me. It def doesnt look like a "miata" to me, but i still like the overall look. Im quite curious to see how it actually performs when it comes out.

Having an under-powered engine isn't exactly a great selling point. 155 hp isn't a lot: we expect around as much power in modern econoboxes. I wouldn't want any less. XD

I just wish we could get the 1.4. Part of what made the original miata so charming was how underpowered it was; you really had to be smart about how you drove to keep your speed up and couldn't depend on the engine to fix your mistakes.

No. Just no.

I understand that "small and light" is a selling point for this particular model, but I don't think any salesperson would have an easy day selling the 1.5L model ND over the standard 2.0 in the US market, unless it was sold at a really low price.

To wit, I have a small, light car in mind that would have better performance and fuel mileage than the 1.5 ND that I can drive off the showroom floor for only 20 grand. As a fake online salesman and self proclaimed expert, sell me that 1.5L engine in the ND when I'm armed with that knowledge and that other car is across the street at another dealership. Base ND pricing is expected to be in the $25,000 range.

You might be able to convince me to get a smaller engine is if it had forced induction vs naturally aspirated making around the same power (ie like Ford's 1.0L ecoboost vs. the 1.6L NA).

Won't be 20 grand even if smaller engine stripper model came up. You pay for the brand name. $23000. BECAUSE of the better fuel mileage.

At that point I could probably haggle down a base BRZ to that price, as well.

Used BRZ's can be found for under $20k, and they didn't come out too long ago so you still get many of the advantages of having a new car. I don't see much of a point in paying for a new one, unless you're dead set on being the first owner.

On topic, I don't think the fuel economy difference would really be that significant. I mean, when you're having fun with the car, fuel economy isn't much of a concern. When you're commuting in NJ, chances are you're either sitting in traffic a lot or have a very short commute. I also don't think the Miata would make for a very good long road trip car.
