Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Initial D Merchandise > Initial D "Uncut" R1 DVD Still Edited

Posted by: Orin_Quon Aug 13 2003, 10:40 AM
Hi, i'm the guy that started the Initial D petition long ago (The_Shape aka Orin_Quon).

Just letting you know that the R1 DVD is still messed up. Read the review:

http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/alt_reviews/923.php

By the way, i wonder if Tokyocrap's also going to get the live-action Initial D and call them "Tak" and re-edit? Hahaha...

http://www.kungfucinema.com/news/2003-07-28-04.htm

"he also plans to make another 'effects' movie entitled Initial D. This will be an adaptation of a Japanese manga title of the same name."

Let them know how you feel (that is, if you still care):

well Tokyopop (aka tokyocrap, tokyochop) really did it now, when they said they were gonna leave an "original" version on the DVD, boy was that a bunch of BS, just by reading the review u can tell they the whole thing "has been FUBAR'd".

FUBAR, gotta love that acronym

Posted by: IntegraToast Aug 13 2003, 03:27 PM
i hate tokyochop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i hope they die who says we once again plan to burn down the damn headquaters...i think imma make a call to customer service too!

booo-urns

'tricked out' version, what a heap of shit.

I can imagine the ricer exhaust noises they have used also.

God dammit, who makes these descisions! Who decides that a ricer exhaust sounds cooler than a real one, I would like to acutally meet the person who decided this, not JUST to kick him in the nuts, but to question his bizare reasoning!

Posted by: driftFD Aug 16 2003, 04:17 PM
DAMN YOU TOKYOCHOP!!!

Posted by: Alex Aug 16 2003, 09:15 PM
if i were to learn about Initial D at the time T.P.(lol, TokyoPop/Toilet Paper) released the butchered manga and knew about the original, i would of found the original with the correct names etc much more interesting! and why ONLY Initial D??? Chobits and everything else TokyoPop has is still produced as the original and as it was made. why target a great one? why not go target some shitty one no one likes???? why the hell target any manga/anime at all???

Posted by: S15-guy Aug 16 2003, 09:37 PM
lets storm the tokyopop headquaters and tar-and-feather the people responsible.

tar and feather is the best punishment!

tokyopop sucks and they f**ked up intial d BUT dont you think this is some what of a good thing as well? the creators of intial d gets money for sending it over here even thought they buthcered it and all the lil kids are gonna think they can drift and everything and ish dumb but they creators are gonna get mad money therefore MORE intial D dont u think so?

Posted by: Ryoga Aug 21 2003, 07:54 PM
I was actually gonna wait for Tokyopop to release this but after seeing the review, I'm gonna go ahead and buy the HK DVDs from eBay instead.

Posted by: karasac Aug 21 2003, 11:43 PM
yes, i think everyone should tell everyone interested in buying Initial D to buy the HK version and not the tokyocrap version

Posted by: w0nXt0nXb0iX Aug 23 2003, 11:12 AM
I think this fourm should buy a wholesale of all the initial d dvds and disrubute the hk version over here and the fourms could make some money and everone on the fourm can be like dont buy the tokyopop version go to the site or something.

Dude, i didn't even know there was sex and prostitution and stuff in Initial D because i was reading the TOKYOPOP mangas!

Man...this sux. Won't really be worth it to buy the japanese manga's since i can't read it...

BTW: i wanna get the DVD's off ebay from HK, do ppl own these? are they good quality? are the subs decent? I mean, sometimes they take the japanese, sub it into chinese, then use the chinese subs to sub into english, so it gets changed and confused. Are the subs understandable?

Posted by: Evolution Aug 26 2003, 05:19 AM
You don't have to get off ebay you can also get ID dvds at iloveasiandvds.com.

Posted by: 4g63T Aug 26 2003, 04:11 PM
its just sad how they chopped it all up (tak? iggy? i mean come the hell on), but not like it wasent expected i dont touch dubs theyre just not right. but with something like initial d its just a damn shame and if you wana tar and feather go for it ill be the getaway driver.....

hey jlo Mein--

check out http://www.jackadeal.com for HIGH QUALITY dvds of Initial D - i thought i was getting jacked but i was pleasantly surprised about the hi-qual stuff i got from them...

btw - i realize that there's quite a bit of backlash against TokyoPoop's b@st@rdiz@tion of the characters and ID storyline in their release set for October. I've been a fan of Initial D for approximately 6 days (August 24). I literally just finished watching Stages 1, 2, Extra, and 3. I enjoyed every minute of it. I can say I'm addicted...

But my question is: How many of you who dislike TokyoPop's edits will refuse to watch the Americanize version of the show? Maybe i'll start a poll on that if no one has already...

Have fun... laugh.gif

Tokyopop screws up again, what else is new.

thats not the point. Have you actually watched the butchered english dub!? Its not just an insult to the series, but all anime! Americanizing any anime is an insult to the fans especially since a good percentage of anime fans are young adults that do understand the original story line. By americanizing it, they're insulting your intelligence as a fan.

agreed Ry (Ryousuke) and KT (Keisuke) just sounds gay, even americans dont call each other by those gay nick names. especially Tak (Takumi), how retarded is that?

Posted by: TheTofuGuy Jan 6 2005, 12:50 AM
there is two words for those "tricked out" race scenes on their DVD's its call, ON DRUGS. the main reason i watch initial D was cause the story line wasnt the same as the crap we call cartoons like disney, Initial D story line its more mature and more down to earth than other anime, and to try to make it more kiddie friendly there is no excuse, cuz for that the kiddies got pokkemon. And for the more mature and racing fan like us, thats why Initial D was created for, so leave it alone.

Actually one of my TAs for Chemistry's name is Takeshi but his co-workers call him Tak (Takumi)... so go figure...

Posted by: Akira Mar 11 2005, 03:00 PM
Yeah, I know people named Tak (Takumi).. The "popped" stuff seemed a lot less wierd after that but.. KT? Isn't that a little stereotypical california surfer? and Ry (Ryousuke)? Uh.. retard.. I wouldn't mind the names so much if they left the anime be on it's own.

Aw, c'mon! It was a riot the first time my brother heard that awful "'Nitialiiiiiiiize!" on the english dub. I got them mostly for the jp dub, but when Crappy Movie Night comes up, I can just switch to the "Tricked Out" version and let the laughs begin.

Posted by: Tessou Sep 13 2005, 08:11 PM
That's odd. None of my DVDs had that label.

Then again, I bought all of mine used, so I didn't get the "joy" of shrink wrapping on the case.

You can bet that they'll have the license soon, though. They're currently working on (butchering) 3rd Stage.

Oh well, at least they make good 5.1 tracks for both languages on their DVDs.

I have to admit that i watched TP version first n i thought what was every1 complaining about. Then i saw the fansubs, "now i get it". And also the manga, i bought the first TP volume and felt somethin wasnt quite rite and sure enough wen i saw the scanned ones i was like dry.gif .
I dnt think butchered is a strong enough word. I think instead of taking the tym to do it properly they just shi#ed in the presses.
Thats just me im a purist wen it comes to anime(especially ID). rant.gif

Posted by: Haku Nov 11 2005, 02:30 PM
I remember buying the TP Initial D DVDs two years ago, to start off my understanding of Initial D. I was aware of the name changes, but I NEVER expected them to change the music. After I bought the 2nd volume, I thought to myself "wtf was I thinking? Since when do they use recycled teen slang? And since when does Itsuki talk like a wannabe thug?". Bah! I think you get the point! I was disgusted at that moment. I sold both volumes to my local Gamestop and bought the HK ones at Ebay. The only TP DVD anime I have are the entire GTO series.

Of all american anime companies, why Tokyopop? I think ADV Films, Urban Vision, or especially Geneon Entertainment, should translate Initial D. At least those companies are kind to their anime. Now if only the entire series were re-dubbed by one of these companies. That would be pretty cool, wouldn't it? We would have the original names, original car sounds, original story arc, original music, original everything. But all in all, just wishful thinking. In short, F**K TOKYOPOP!!!! Peace!

Posted by: Tessou Nov 12 2005, 12:17 AM
The TP DVDs are worthwhile only because of the fan-friggin-tastic Japanese 5.1 dub they included. It's MUCH better than the echoey dubs I've heard on other versions.

Plus, a few of the extras are somewhat entertaining, albeit a little stupid.

i was thinkin of gettin the new collectors box. Its all of 1st Stage + sym collectors thingy for $100 aus, is it worth it?

Posted by: Tessou Nov 13 2005, 05:59 PM
In the US, they released a collectors box set that only included dvds 1-5 (about half of first stage) along with a few worthless items.

If the box set you're talking about is different, then I'd shy away from it when you can just get the dvds for a much better price.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 13 2005, 06:51 PM
Hmmm... I read someone saying they are butchering 3rd Stage right now... They probably did that already 2-3 years ago when they showed a dubbed version at the Big Apple Anime Fest in New York City...

Posted by: Haku Nov 15 2005, 06:02 PM
awww weak!!!! not to say i didnt know they were gonna butcher it....but still...thats just f*cking weak! i wonder what kind of crap music they came up with for the movie. i bet its more of those craptastic rappers and rock bands doing the songs for the racing scenes.

like on my last post, i'll say it again...of all american anime companies, why tokyopop?

Posted by: Slade Nov 16 2005, 12:47 PM

Right, I finally bit the bullet and decided to purchase my first Tokyopop Initial D DVD, just to test out the quality, since i've been watching the HK copies for years and am fed up with the sound quality. Right, to compare

Picture - This is a bit of a let down. I was expecting a much crisper steadier picture. All the shaking about that you get in the HKDVDs is still apparent and still frustrating. Sure enough the picture quality is better, but it's marginal.
6/10

Sound - This is so much better (just to remind you i'm talking about the CLASSIC version) I can finally listen to the car sounds and Eurobeat music in 5.1 and not have the whole thing sound like it has been recorded in a Hall. This to me would be the biggest reason for buying the rest. 9/10

Subtitles - Ok, this is a tough one. Although the subtitles are much more accurately timed so we know who is talking and are somewhat correct. We are faced with a flaw with missing adult plotlines. For the quality and timing of the subs I can just about let this go and will give it 8/10

Presentation - The DVD box itself lacks any interesting artwork. I would have loved some of the manga artwork to be in place as the boxart, since we missed out in the manga itself. The menus of the disc are nice but nothing special. 6/10

Tricked out version - Why oh why? I was hearing many rumours of how bad this would be and thought many people were overreacting but sure enough, they weren't! The new songs do not fit in with the characters at all, especially when we open on the first episode to a song that would define Takumi as teenager with street cred and a moody underlining but not the dopey-bean-jam-bun-munching-sleepy-headed-couldn't-care-less tofu guy that we know and love. In terms of the music video style editing. It has made the race scenes unwatchable. Want to see Ryosuke twin drift with keisuke? nope we have to see them mirrored into a butterfly effect making it impossible to see just how close they are....pointless 2/10 (1 for effort and 1 for comedy value) I would consider that generous

So at the end of it all, if you have the HK bootlegs and are thinking about getting the Tokyopop versions I have only this to say. Only do it if you have a 5.1 setup to make the most of the great sounds that you can come to expect from the anime and/or if you find the subtitles are frustrating and you can't understand what people are saying in your current copies. Otherwise don't expect much else to surprise you. I will probably look into purchasing a full boxset only if it happens to come down in price to something more reasonable in the future. hope this helps a few of you out.

Posted by: TakumiUK Feb 24 2006, 12:47 PM
You ever get the feeling your listing to half a conversation.

Ok, no ridicule if you please... living in the UK even hearing about decent anime is difficult, let alone getting hold of some so I've only seen the Tokyopop releases of Stages 1&2, correct the Tricked Out version is garbage, but how much has been altered for the classic version from the original.

I thought the classic version is pretty decent, well timed subtitles, decent audio track... even the 'subsitized dating' sub plot is in there.

So my question is this...

What am I missing out on and where can I get it from

I think we're all in unison that the TP Dubs are horrible. KT should never have to hang with Tak (Takumi) (Takumi) and do "wicked" drifts.

um...i'm pretty sure i didn't type in (Takumi). Did the forum do that? Man, i gotta lay off the gasoline.

Posted by: dark_hero_zero Oct 14 2006, 02:14 PM
Well Tokyopop's initial d tricked aint that bad. The voices actors are not bad. Putting back the names of some people doesnt really bug me. The greatest reason I see it that its crap is the missing Eurobeat. Eurobeat made every single race so intense that its a shame they took it out. Hopefully one day a hero will be upon us and present us the real initial d English version.

Posted by: EddieNanakase Jan 20 2007, 05:30 PM
[B]I bought the Initial D Stage 1, 2, and extra stage DVD's from Tokyopop and I thought it was awsome!! If you have at least two speakers and a subwoofer, the sound is incredible! I swear, the subwoofer is like having an actual exhaust pipe coming out off your tv!! When I bought my first Initial D DVD, I started watching the classic version right off the back. After I bought the fourth volume, it ocurred to me to watch the Tricked Out version. I swear, I'm not exaggerating, I was only able to watch five seconds of it because I was twitching so bad that I immediately pressed the stop button on the remote control. Itsuki sounded like an 11 year old kid that was trying too hard to look as they say "cool". I have a better example, the characters seemed like they were trying to educate teenagers through a commercial about how it's not "cool" to use drugs. In other words, the people that dubbed the tricked out version were "trying" to add their version of what they think is "hip" and "cool" ( lol ) to the young crowed. I didn't get to see if they use eurobeat music because I think I might get a heart attack if I try watching the Tricked Out version again. So I don't know how much of the original do they show on the Classic version. I have seen subtitled episodes from the internet, and I do agree that the Tokyopop Classic version in Initial D is a lot more accurate to the translations. So for those people talking crap about Initial D from Tokyopop, I highly suggest you get the Tokyopop Initial D DVD's, get a cheap surround sound that at least has two front speakers and a subwoofer because the sound does make a HUGE difference! I bought my 5.1 surrounf system from Aldi for $40, and it sounds great!! Another place that I saw had nice cheap surround sound systems was microcenter (in Chicago), check their website for store locations or just look for big computer stores. I don't think they edited anything at all from the Classic version from the Tokyopop DVD's. They even play the original intros, credits and the Eurobeat music!! For those that don't know what I'm talking about, the Tokyopop Initial D DVD's have two versions to watch the episodes, Classic (subtitles with original Japanese voice characters) and Tricked Out (dubbed episodes with English voices).

Posted by: LANSD Feb 10 2007, 04:16 PM
I downloaded ripped HKDVDs, and the subs were all fine. They cheated and took ALL the subs from the fansubs, right down to "not for sale or rent." Timing was off on some of the subs, but it was still perfectly watchable. As for sound, I dont know, there's an echo on some eps, but I dont really mind it.

I'd not buy the Tokyopop DVDs. I'd rather go support some guy in China with bootlegs than Tokyopop to make more shitty ID dubs.

The only thing that really frustrates me is the manga. The manga I wanna buy and read so bad, but it seems so butchered.

Sure, there's scanlations, but I have trouble reading over like a chapter with them, and they appear small on my computer, due to a 800x600 monitor. Plus, the main reason I buy manga is to read it on the go, but I cant take my desktop with me. Sure, I could invest in a laptop, but I also like mangas so I can read them during a power outage, and laptops dont work too long during a power outage. You cant charge them by shaking them, you know?
