Initial D World - Discussion Board / Forums > Main Site & Facebook Fanpage > Drift Spirits (Mobile Game)

Posted by: Initial D World Sep 5 2014, 12:21 AM
With the help of the hype surrounding the new Initial D movie, Bandai Namco recently released the Android version of their popular mobile game ドリフトスピリッツ (Drift Spirits) The iOS version was available since last year, but just recently been attracting some attentions. (Check out the TV commercial below)

The game features an impressive lineup of cars from six different manufactures. (Yes, AE86 is featured in this game, along with many other cars seen in Initial D.) Players can do story mode or VS mode and other interactive online mode. The reason why this game wasn't that well known before is because it is exclusively available in Japanese. There is no language option, so many die-hard Initial D fans who are not well versed in Japanese were intimidated to try it, not to mention you have to change the country/region for your App Store account to Japan before you can even download it.

Besides the non-obligatory in-game token purchase, the game is completely free of charge for both iOS and Android. The graphics are unmatched by many other mobile racing games. The gameplay is however, entirely depend on your ability to understand Japanese. All the controls and on-screen instructions are in Japanese. I mean sure, you can whip out your dictionary and translate the meaning, but it takes the whole experience out of it.

I went through the troubles to change my iPhone's country/region to Japan to download this game. I was not disappointed. The layouts and gameplays are both superb. It is what you would expect for a game that's attention to details. The images in this post are ACTUAL gameplay screenshots. Happy drifting!

P.S. Here is a simple tutorial to change the region/country on your iOS, by yours truly - http://imgur.com/a/au9rv

So this game has some tie in with the Initial D movie judging by that one screenshot you posted?

Posted by: Tessou Sep 5 2014, 05:59 PM
It refers to the Initial D mission or mode or whatever as a "collaboration event", so who knows.

Ah, for a second there I was confused... I'll try to get this via iTunes, it's times like these where I wished I had an Android device so I can easily download the game.

Oh no! My smurt phone is too old to download this. It seems really interesting though. Sometimes I wish I had a tablet to use since it doesn't look like I'm ableto upgrade my phone for another bagillion years.

Going to check this out on Android 4.4.4 but I need to figure my way around the region block.

edit: Anyone know if this is something I can do without rooting?

Posted by: Spaz Sep 10 2014, 09:13 AM
I've rooted every Android phone I've owned. Back it up and do it.

1. Download a .APK file for the game and put it on your phone
2. Go to settings and enable "Unknown Sources"
3. ???
4. Profit!

I haven't seen it in the play store. Just checked.

"Not available in your country."

Posted by: MzdaspD Apr 9 2015, 08:43 PM

So I got an .apk file because Android.

It's pretty fun for what it is. I'm currently at the 3rd set of opponents with an R32 and R33 without spending a penny. It's been 6 days.

Posted by: Seri May 7 2015, 08:37 PM
So I may have hit a paywall due to a bit of a difficulty spike near the end of the 3rd set of opponents. We'll find out tomorrow when I get my free rare car as a login bonus.

I also managed to download this game and I had some exposure from the Japanese version, glad to see what the story is now. You could wait until another event is open, since this is only the first month the game was released. Some events from the Japanese version raced increasingly powerful racers and you get tickets which acts like the Order Tickets but you get event specific cars. But it's up to you.

My username is the same as...my username.

Never mind. Got it thanks to getting a few Spirit drifts. Which I still don't know how I'm doing. tongue.gif

Anyway, I'll add you I guess. Free gas for me. I'll be Miyuki with a Tomomi avatar.

Edit: Apparently it's done by player ID, so... 51631.

Posted by: OkamiWind May 7 2015, 09:06 PM
Boom, request sent.

I think Spirits are completely random when you execute a Excellent...hell even in the Japanese version I was wishing for it at random times.

Says incompatible with all of my devices. I'm on Android 4.4.2. Well above required specs.

Thanks Namco.

Try setting your locale to Japan. I am not sure about your cellphone, but I fixed it on my android that way.

Why is there a fucking muscle car in this game?

Posted by: OkamiWind May 23 2015, 12:38 AM
Because why not? I dunno, the C3 was actually from an event back in the JPN version. So ask Namco why the hell they did that...same with the Mini Cooper.

EDIT: hate my phone's autocorrect and my spelling instinct.

Posted by: Seri May 23 2015, 04:52 AM
So I forgot to buy another R32 before I made it a rank 5 and now it'll cost a fortune to upgrade.

Actually, why not? They are all RWD so drifting with them makes perfect sense. Nobody had ever set a rule saying you should only drift with Japanese cars. Wangan Midnight prettymuch only had two "import" which is the Porsche and the Ferrari, unless you are talking about the fifth arcade, which had Corvettes, Audi R8s, and the SLS AMGs etc.

I'm just used to initial d being tuner imports exclusive. sad.gif

And? With the right amount of money into any car, you can do anything with it. There were vintage muscle cars at the last USCA that absolutely wasted any time that I put down, and I expect that to re-occur at every event throughout the series. Opens minds, gents.
