lol okay i blew my VG30ET a ringland let go and left me with 0 compression and a sh!t load of blow by.

i will never work with another VG again to make power.

so concerns are reliability needs to be able to make about 600hp or more on stock internals AND be reliable. remember this is going to be a daily driven engine yes wear is a concern as well but im not going to be going 500hp all day LOL but not so little either.

both motors need to have availability for parts i can go to the j yard for another 2jz i cant for a rb26.

expense BOTH motors are expensive both because of the "supra" and "GT-R" tax.

this is going to be a budget and wont happen over night. a full 2jz swap with everything i need will run me around 2,000 for a full swap, rb = 2,888 or 3k sometimes 2,500 either way it doesnt come with the transmission i need.

weight of each engine fully dressed and powerband and how well it can make power as well, both are VERY efficient motors.

what is everyones opinion on this. this will go in the Z but please look past the "oh a toyota in a nissan" please and look at the shear performance of each engine.

this has been asked before on google but always on a toyota forum or nissan forum, i want completely unbiased opinions on this.

2J.

Lots of available parts, both stock and aftermarket, and quite easy to make a ton of power with.

if you dont pay for someone to do the work they're not that expensive.

also, OP, LS1.

YEESSSSS I was looking for one but so many different variations i dont know which to pick. if i go ls1 it will be boosted (twin turbos, single turbo, s/c some form of boost) some range from 1-5k. then again i dont need like a billion hp LOL

is the 2j reliable? i hear some people go through them like nothing will only be aiming for 500hp

So the entire point of the thread has become moot?

There are MkIV Supra drivers laughing right now at how little power your 2J is making.

I'm going to go with either the Elephant, or a BMW M10. If they're good enough for Don Prudhomme and Nelson Piquet respectively, they're good enough for anybody.

But seriously, power isn't everything. I'd recommend you pick up an engine that's got sufficient parts availability, but is by no means a common swap. Do something that would be a conversation piece, and revel in the attention you'll get at car shows. Instead of LS1 (which is a pretty easy swap, hell, somebody probably makes a kit for your car) why not do a Honda F20C, or perhaps an Infiniti V8?

Don't know of applicable to this scenario, but a buddy of mine is putting an Aristo 2J in a Cressida. Total is around $8k. A Supra's 2J would have been more expensive for him. Just some facts bro.

You're talking about the VK series engines they had back in the Q45 and up? I don't think they have a very decent aftermarket scene, and it's the same story with the Toyota UZ engines found 1996 and up.

It's a V8, there are plenty of ways to boost power with or without a big aftermarket. But really, does anybody need 500+ horsepower? If you're not racing, I don't think power is really that important. Having something cool is a much bigger priority, and if a vk bolts to a readily available tranny that fits a Z, it suddenly makes a lot more sense.

i knoow but it worrys me a little though, you know streetfigter he pushes 800hp he's gone through 5 2jz's so that kind of worrys me a bit of the reliablity of a 2j, i wont make 800hp only 500 but im curious as to that.

Where the hell did I suggest doing anything even close to that? I said make the car interesting, not homosex* it.

You want big power? Drop in a big Cummins turbodiesel, crank up the boost till you melt the pistons, then rebuild it, dial the boost back 3psi, and add a small water/methanol injection system. Put an electronic dump on it and enjoy a huge smoke screen whenever you want one.

*"Stance" autocorrects to homosex. No offense to LGBT's, huge offense to people who think poke is a good look.

I agree that a ls1 is the best choice especially if you live in the states and want cheap power and reliablity. With that said a 2j engine isnt exactly a bad choice either just expect to pay more.

Depends on how you define 'cheap' and 'power'. Depending on how much 'power' you're talking about, 'cheap reliability' would actually favor something like a Ford 302, wouldn't it? awesome.gif

What? The LS1 is superior to the 5.0 in almost everyway, it is very easy to get 400-500 hp out of a LS1 with just a few grands worth of bolt on parts like a blower, ect. The 5.0 would need a lot more work to get that kind of power. Not only that but the LS1 is lighter and has way more aftermarket parts

I think you missed the entire point of my post. Nowhere in your response did I see you compare the costs of a Ford 302 versus your LS1. smile.gif I specifically focused on the 'cheap' part of 'cheap, reliable power'. Last I checked one could acquire a Mustang 302 for around 600 bucks. How about an LS1?

I'm actually asking, by the way. I haven't looked into the costs of an LS1, but seeing as they're a Corvette engine, it makes me think that they would cost significantly more. Please come back with some numbers to satisfy my curiosity.

If not more, what I was trying to say is the OP wants 500hp out of his car and although the LS1 is more pricey to buy its very easy to get those numbers cheaply compared to the 302.

How about you go to a junkyard and pull a v10 out of a truck. It worked for Dodge...

Not just a Corvette motor, was originally put in the Camaro. ...and that's just the LS1.

The other motors in the LS series were put in everything from Impala's to pickup trucks. So like the 302 and 350, they're fucking everywhere.
