They both drive Silvias.

I want Iketani to win, but I think Kenta is clearly better.

It's unfortunate that Iketani who is the only driver who has received Bunta's ( vague ) insight on the endless dedication required to become a great driver,

AND being one of the few who rode shotgun with Takumi, yet couldn't improve to a good level.

Iketani is persistent ( except with Mako laugh2.gif ), clearly has guts and the love of driving needed to constantly improve.

Even Itsuki improved his driving. Would have been nice if Iketani kept practicing hard, improving steadily, then he gets Bunta's attention who gives him a bit more insight, and he reaches a respectable level and beats Kenta. I can't picture Iketani beating Nakazato though, that would make Nakazato too pitiful lol

Iketani by the end of the series is actually pretty competent behind the wheel. I think he could beat Kenta.

There are 2 canon yet contradictory takes on Iketani's skills early in the series.

I remember the anime had a scene where Ryosuke complained that the Speed Stars sucked, and that their best driver Iketani couldn't even keep up with the Red Suns' 3rd driver.

But in the Legends movie, Iketani said he COULD keep up with the Red Suns' 3rd driver, albeit barely.

So if we go by the Legends' take, that at the onset of the series, Iketani was already as good as the 3rd best Red Sun, that would make him equal or better than Kenta, depending on how Kenta ranks in the Red Suns hierarchy. I thought the 3rd best driver was the guy in the red shirt that's pretty chummy with Ryosuke, but who knows.

So if Legends is canon, then Iketani vs Kenta was already 50/50 to start with, and if Iketani improved more than Kenta throughout the series, Iketani would win. Personally, in Legends timeline, I think end of series Iketani beats Kenta on Akina but loses on Akagi.

In anime/manga timeline, I think Kenta is better than Iketani. Kenta traveled with Project D, and seeing all those great races in person, and seeing other good drivers like Daiki, Godfoot etc, that probably motivated Kenta a lot to improve.

Legend is about as canon as Ryousuke installing a supercharger in the FC (sub-watchers managing to misunderstand a very simple bit of dialogue) and Bunta being an abusive drunkard (standard live-action anime being standard live-action anime). The movies had to take a few liberties to cram all of First Stage into three 1-hour installments.
And before someone jumps in here to defend Legend - I'm only talking about canonity, not quality.

Anyway, Iketani can drift pretty decently later in the series (minus the occasional spinout), but I'm not sure it's ever been made clear if he can actually go fast when serious. He did do decently against the S15, but he clearly still has a ways to go if he couldn't beat some loudmouth who can only yell CHOU REITO BUREIKINGU and go way too wide into corners. There are Red Suns below Keisuke who could've destroyed that guy, and I'm sure some of them have slower cars too.

But as for how a race between Iketani and Kenta would go, I can see Kenta letting Iketani take the lead due to hearing Keisuke talk about Ryousuke's strategy that one time. Then I can see him turning his lights off.

Then I can see the S13 coming out of a corner, followed by the sound of ABS brakes desperately slowing the S14 down to under 40 km/h, and then the sound of fender meeting guardrail.

Okay, let's assume that's not how it goes. Assuming the S13's engine is a CA18DET and the S14's engine is an SR20DET, and that neither engine has had any real work done to it, they're both at roughly similar power outputs. Kenta might take the lead because I'd expect the Red Suns to actually pay attention to proper launch technique, but if not, then the lead will probably go to whoever's on the inside for the first corner. And then...
...Honestly, maybe it's because I'm low on sleep right now, but at present I can't really see anything other than that first corner deciding who wins the race. If Iketani gets the lead, all he has to do is grip through corners on an okay line and never drift. Same goes for Kenta. At the moment, I can't see either of these two having much in the way of overtaking technique, so I can't see either Iketani or Kenta pulling late-braking overtakes on each other. Maybe they're just both equally likely to win.

Good point, Kenta wins hands down on a rainy night. I think training often in the rain might have improved Kenta's overall control of his vehicle too. We often view Kenta as a lowly henchman, but he went through some tough training.

Heh, I wonder if they alluded to that in the anime as well? I can't remember if they did.

I don't remember seeing that in the anime. I thought everyone was joking to make fun of Kenta.

Wow, so it's true. They definitely should have put that in the anime, that should be canon lol

Well, I re-watched that episode yesterday and they don't mention anything beyond Fumihiro apologizing for getting Keisuke to go since it's usually Kenta's job.
