Agreed. A Miata would never make a good "only" car. Unless you buy groceries weekly -and- don't ever plan on having a kid, it will always remain a toy. That and the two seater tax, although, funny enough, when I was shopping for an '06 Miata with about 65k on the clock, full insurance was cheaper than my mirage. Probably because the car would cost a lot less to write off though.

A buddy of mine has a first gen Miata that he uses as his only car, but he's definitely feeling the drawbacks of having one as an only car, still it's a very fun car though.

A two-seater is fine for an only car if you live alone and have no friends... no one should buy enough groceries for themselves in one trip that you can't fit them into a Miata.

If you ever need to travel, you just buy a bike rack and a luggage carrier.

Check and check. It's a perfect match! XD

Drove my MR2 to work today. I forgot how unforgiving the car is; got too complacent with my Accord. Bigger wheels/tires did make it a much more comfortable ride though.

But yeah, when I had friends, it was too small and uncomfortable for my passengers.

I do have to add one more caveat: If you have to do any work on your house, a small car isn't the greatest. At least with my Accord, I can fold down the back seats and fit plywood and whatnot through the trunk. This is impossible in the MR2, though I guess a roof rack or a small tow hitch would help. You have a few more options with a convertible.

If I was going to cut back to one car, I'm pretty sure it would be something hopelessly impractical. Consulier, panoz, Maxton roller skate, qvale, or something else you can't really get parts for very easily. I'd bike to work.

This. I guess that's why I never noticed while I had the SVX/S30. My local friends were almost entirely gearheads, and those who weren't at least had their own cars. laugh2.gif

I agree

That's what non-car people are for.

Rides.

When they ever ask:
"Why is your car always a piece of shit, in fact why do you always buy pieces of shit?"
Just smile and nod, you've reached the highest badge of honor.

respond with

"You just wont get it"

My MR2 has 17" Advans and coilovers, so.... oww.

What I want to know is how they squeezed such little power out of a DIRECT INJECTION 2.0L??

Most 90's 2.0L produce at least 200 hp. They must have engineered it specifically to reduce power.

Well, by the time I can own one, aftermarket turbos will solve the problem.

Still looks hideous. I don't care if it has 800hp and gets 60mpg stock. I would never buy that ugly thing.

Just curious, now that the new Miata seems to be out at dealerships, has anyone taken one out for a test drive or just driven one?

having a two seater car is doable but you have to accept that there will be days where in its impracticality will outshine its vanity.

-when your cute girlfriend would like her cuter girlfriend to come along

-when you have to buy groceries all of a sudden

-police officers tend to flag down two seaters more often, is it just me?

I've been in a two seater primary off and on for many years. Police only got me once when I was very blatantly speeding. There was nothing to suggest that they looked at me for any other reason than "you were going 84 in a 65".

I see cops pulling bikes (naturally) and trucks more often than anything else.
