Much like Initial D 4th Stage, Wangan Midnight will also be produced by OB Planning and have Keiichi Tsuchiya serve as an editorial supervisor. The show will begin broadcast on Animax (2007-06-08) and SKY PerfecTV! (2007-06-15) respectively, and will be Pay-Per-View. Two episodes are scheduled to air per month. It is currently confirmed that the series will span a total of 26 episodes.

Please check here first for any updates regarding releases of the anime in both RAW and fansubbed form. This first post and thread will be updated as more episodes are released along with further news and information regarding the show.

I strongly urge everybody, to please, be patient and allow a suitable amount of time for the release of the raws and/or subs before asking for their whereabouts. Raws tend to be uploaded within a few days after an episode has aired, where as the release of a subbed episode can range anywhere between a couple of days to months after the episodes initial air date. So once again, I ask of you to please be patient and refrain yourselves as much as possible while waiting for the release of the raws and/or subs. This thread and post will be updated ASAP to notify you of any episode releases.

NOTE that this is an anime only thread. Discussion of any manga events yet to be aired in the anime should be done so inside spoiler tags. Further and in-depth manga discussions should instead be posted https://idforums.net/index.php?showtopic=20274&st=0 in the relevant https://idforums.net/index.php?showtopic=20274&st=0.

lol at Google translation.

[Anime] Newsflash! Kusunoki Michiharu [Wangan Midnight] Anime adaptation set for next spring! It's announced in this week's issue of Young Magazine. The details in the announcement are sketchy.

Nothing the first article didn't mention, it was just to emphasize it by linking to a more credible source.

I haven't read the manga either, but from the summary it sounds cool. Hopefully they will have some good music to go with it. Hopefully Eurobeat. tongue.gif

I wonder if they're going to use the 2nd Stage-ish animation style they used for the intro of the PS2 game, or if they're going to do something completely original... man, I can't wait to see! =^-^=

Yay!! finally they are making an anime! smile.gif I have super high hopes for this anime for some odd reason rolleyes.gif . Im dying to see Reina whistling.gif

Just hope that when it comes out for US distribution that its not gonna be TOKYOPOP owned! mad.gif

I hope they have some of Yuzo's music in it, and *crosses fingers* the anime will help cause the manga's to be translated officially in the US. As long as its like the manga, I don't care if the cars are 3d, animated, etc.

Posted by: Orochi Kyouichi Nov 8 2006, 02:09 PM
I am happy that there is going to be a Wangan Midnight anime soon. I just hope they have great voice actors to go along with it.

Of course, I'll be happy seeing Akio and Reina again (except when seeing their appearances from the first few volumes of the manga. I cannot stand Akio's weird face and Reina's ugly curly hair. Luckily the later volumes did their appearances justice. For those who read the Japanese manga and/or played stages 41-50 in the WMMT2 game, you'll know what I mean.)

Other than that, I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

What I'm wondering about though is what the voices are going to sound like, I half-expect Tatsuya to sound like Ryousuke

Posted by: DKW Nov 11 2006, 09:04 AM
I don't think Tokyopop is going to go for this one because they don't own any WM-related properties (PS3 game, arcade game, movies, etc.), so there isn't really any way for them to hype this. This doesn't sound like the kind of property they go for anyway...too straighforward, too down to earth, highly unsexy. Nonetheless, something this big and anticipated, it's almost inevitable that someone will take a chance on it.

And I'm pumped up for this like you wouldn't believe. I'll be blunt...it's been forever since I've given a damn about anime at all, and a lot of it has to do with how the industry sledgehammers EVERYTHING into its preset molds. I can't imagine the kind of hack job required to turn Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura into the most depressing, glacially-paced slogs imaginable (and don't get me started on Fist of the North Star). WM, however, is about racing, and that's pretty much all it's about, so I can forgive a little "personality enhancement". As long as the basic principles are adhered to...it's fast, it's dangerous, and there's only those who race and those who quit...I'll enjoy it. Hell, I'll relish it.

I'm going to have this. I'll import if I have to. This is just too cool, too radical, hell, too different to miss out on.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 11 2006, 09:07 AM
That, and Tokyopop is almost completely out of the licensing of anime, their last being Initial D.

Fist of the North Star is an overly tragic cheese fest, it's the bottom of the shonen tar pit, it's just so stupid and ridiculous that it makes me laugh... it's cartoon nonsense, and I love it... it's Kazuo Koike for high schoolers, some people like it, most people don't. If you're talking about the way it was handled in the US, I couldn't agree more.

Let's hope it's a faithfull adaptation of the manga. The first studio I'm banking/hoping on is OB Planning. Production IG could be an option, but to be honest I would prefer Sunrise over them. It'd be good if the got the guy who directed Third Stage too.

QUOTE (awdrifter)
Hopefully Eurobeat.

It all depends if they work with Avex, but even if they do, I'd prefer music akin to the arcade. WM and Eurobeat just don't mix in my eyes.

Posted by: bROCKoLEE Nov 11 2006, 02:55 PM
lol, can't believe i've been misreading the title of the all this time! Rather than anime, i thought it said manga lol =P
I don't know much bout Wangan apart that it's bout Highway racing, but i'm still looking forward to it though. Hopefully it can live up to all this hype you guys make it out to be tongue.gif

Posted by: Chidoki Nov 11 2006, 03:23 PM
Well the best part about Wangan is the fact that we know the manga has been around the same length of time Initial D manga has been around, shown by the same shonen weekly manga publishers, and with the same amount of manga chapters both of them near the 500 chapter mark.

With that thought alone we know there should be a lot of story. If we should be of any worry is if the anime is going to be not the same as the manga story but altered (or worst, butchered) which I hope won't ever happen.

Posted by: 71m07hySm17h Nov 11 2006, 03:56 PM
Well, techinically WM came first and has made the most advancements(made in 1993), cause in the manga I believe it is 2005(?), and in Initial D its like 1999.

Posted by: Godigy Nov 11 2006, 04:57 PM

That uses a bunch of recycled animation from the opening to the PS2 game, actually.

Posted by: 71m07hySm17h Nov 12 2006, 04:23 PM
You sure? Reina looks an awful lot different, and the characters that flash up when the Devil Z zooms by.

Posted by: Nomake Wan Nov 12 2006, 04:40 PM
I'm sure, because I've seen the PS2 intro a bunch of times... the images that flash up with the cars are definitely straight from that video. Especially the scene of Black Bird shifting gears... straight from the PS2 intro.

So maybe the CG is better (hard to tell from that low-quality capture), but the 2D is the same as the PS2.

EDIT: I don't mean that the PS3 intro IS the PS2 intro. I just mean that they recycled a lot of 2D stuff from the PS2 intro to make the PS3 one.

Posted by: 71m07hySm17h Nov 12 2006, 08:01 PM
Yea the blackbird shifting was badass in both vids though, but I hope we get to see all the characters animated, hopefully that deeply.

Posted by: DKW Nov 15 2006, 11:23 PM
I'm not concerned by how it'll be handled, because, quite frankly, this isn't the kind of story that lends itself to butchery. By far the worst excesses I've seen are 1. Ramrodding the characters into preset anime archtypes, 2. screwing with the story so much that it's practically an entirely new story altogether, 3. being way, way too dark/serious/heavy/intense, and 4. making up all kinds of personal dynamics, especially when they involve characters not in the manga. The personalities are pretty ruidmentary, so #1 and #4 aren't a concern, there's really no point to #2, and this isn't a bright or funny series by any means, minimizing the risk of #3.

This is a story about street racers and street racing, period. The anime machine, for all its flaws, knows how to do that.

I'm actually kinda interested to see what everyone's going to look like, particularly RGO Yamanaka and the like. Is there an anime artist who knows how to do pinhole eyes? smile.gif

^ I was thinking about character design butchery also. I don't doubt that the story will remain faithful, but http://ikimashou.net/2006/11/08/wangan-midnight-anime-announced/ can't get past the art. I like the way the characters are drawn, it's part of what makes Wangan what it is... if Akio ends up looking like standard protagonist number 50 just to please some of the fans, Wangan wouldn't feel right. But yeah, the personalities and mood of the story don't easily lend themselves to be tampered with. So pointless concern on my behalf tongue.gif

And getting a little off topic, but you mentioned that there's nothing really worth watching lately. I just remembered about a title set for release next year, it's Yoshiaki Kawajiri's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTX6o4gnoME. Nothing car related, but besides Wangan I'd keep a close eye on it.

Posted by: 71m07hySm17h Nov 16 2006, 09:21 AM
Wow, I don't see how anyone can call WM character art ugly, I like it almost more than ID, but I love the cars and racing in WM more. But I really hope they don't go butchering it because this is one of those few anime series I really care about.

Is that supposed to mean that there are idiots who will go down the highway at over excess speeds in their "Blackbird"?

Posted by: DKW Dec 3 2006, 06:12 PM
Re. the artwork, I've noticed that manga artists who draw lots of complex vehicles, machinery, weapons, etc. have very simple, almost generic character designs (n.b. anything by Kenichi Sonoda). Just a matter of priorities, I guess. I'm not sure how an anime adaptation would hurt them; if anything, some of them might look better. Imagine a tough-looking R200 Club or a sexy Reina (she's supposed to a pop idol, fer cryin' out loud).

Real-life freeway incidents? I wouldn't worry. The things that get copied the most are the cool-looking stunts that might actually be doable. I haven't heard of a single incident about someone driving down a freeway backwards or jumping off a ramp onto a boat. What's more, the kind of cars you see in WM are expensive, especially with the modifications required to get them to 600HP. This is simply too rich for your typical noodlebrain-with-a-car's blood.

i too, am eagerly waiting for wangan midnight. What worries me, aformentioned by the previous posters, is the eventual increase in racing around the freeways. Lord knows we need more devil Z wannabes on the so.cal freeways.

Posted by: DKW Dec 17 2006, 11:25 PM
Have you seen The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift? The one thing that really stood out was that nearly every car that raced in it was destroyed. Even the ones that didn't crash took a heavy beating. The street racing was portrayed as extremely dangerous and very likely to end in disaster. Wangan Midnight is very much the same; I doubt even 20% of the races don't have a blowout or wreck. And the hero, Akio, begins his racing career with MULTIPLE smashups.

When Takumi Fujiwara executes a flawless gutter turn and Kai Kogashiwa makes effortless Irohazaka jumps, there's a danger that some dolt will get the wrong idea. When someone in an 800 HP beast slams into the guardrail or spins into an approaching semi, tearing down the freeway at over three times the speed limit all of a sudden doesn't seem so attractive anymore.

So I wouldn't worry. And besides, where the hell are you going to get an S30, let alone one that's that freakin' fast?

(Man, I could use some updates. Production schedule, early stills, voice actors, anything. This is too cool to leave hanging.)

Posted by: Phantom_R32 Dec 17 2006, 11:32 PM
I wouldn't want an S30.. laugh.gif I'd be more of afraid of that thing breaking down than anything. My aunt had one when she was in college and she's like 53 now I think. xD They look nice.. but not my cup of tea if I want to cruise(I said cruise not speed! tongue.gif)on the expressway.

Yeah, that would be cool, but it'll be the new craze! Replicating Takumi's AE86 will be history and the next generation of repicas/ricer replicas will be a bunch of Z sports cars crashing on highways worldwide! As if we needed to lose any more.....

j/k

I hated the Initial D art until I started liking cars and discovered Initial D. I then slowly got accustomed to the characters looks. For those of you who don't like the characters, we'll probably slowly grow to like it.

Dam, that post sucked.....

Posted by: Takumi Trueno Dec 26 2006, 06:12 PM
I somewhat doubt there will be a craze to get the 240Z. Finding one in great condition isn't as easy as the AE86. The car is 35 years old after all.

Posted by: bROCKoLEE Dec 29 2006, 08:01 PM
True, but i still reckon the Z is still gonna get a price hike anyway from wangan, just like what Initial D did to the 86... =/

Nope, I am assuming it's from a lack of general interest from mainstream anime fans and news sites.

Anime News Network doesn't even have an entry for the anime yet.

Oh well, it is filled with "ugly manga people" (a reference to an IGN review of the Wangan game). tongue.gif j/k

Ippo has similar character designs to Wangan Midnight--I doubt that's why it isn't getting any coverage. laugh.gif

Posted by: BOZZ Feb 6 2007, 12:49 PM
ROFL... I was kidding about the character design, but I don't think many of the more well known sites (i.e. ANN, ANS) really care about Wangan Midnight.

Posted by: YoruichiSan Feb 10 2007, 10:39 PM
I can't say that the pictures and characters look silly. But with car racing animes. Effort is put into the cars not the characters. Have you actually tried to imagine a guy that looked like sasuke drive a car 0_0?

Arigato.

Well, just because it's a car anime doesn't necessarily mean the character art is going to not be as good as others. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

no wangan midnight doesn't be like ID because the race and cars view in WM is totally different from ID.
In WM power is the more important fact whereas in initial D power is not essential.

Yep, Tsuchiya's also going to be the technical supervisor for WM. Awesome. I think the two people to the right are Akio and Reina's VAs.

News like this just keeps getting better and better. Now you know I've been thinking about the type of songs they will use in Wangan Midnight...if they will be just like the arcades or a soundtrack in par with the insane amount that Initial D has. Oh whatever, even if there was no soundtrack I'd still love the show.

Posted by: BOZZ Mar 27 2007, 12:18 AM
I wonder what the cast will be like... ><

Posted by: Soran Mar 27 2007, 12:42 AM
The biggest problem with a Wangan Midnight anime would be the very revolving-door cast of characters, since most of the story consist of different people trying to take down the Devil Z and Blackbird (and failing at it). Dont expect too much in character development...

Posted by: fuji_tak Mar 27 2007, 12:47 AM
There are more girls in wangan midnight tan in ID.
Storyline and characters are more important in WM than in ID.

http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wngankisyahapprouca6.jpg

the old men with Tsuchiya is the producer of initial D : Ren Usami.
And the youg man and woman are Shun Oguri and Reiko Suho (japanese idole). I know that Oguri is a popular drama actor (Hana yori dango, densha otoko, gokusen etc..). I thing these two made voices in the anime.

Posted by: BOZZ Mar 27 2007, 11:49 AM
You could be right fuji_tak... About them voicing characters in Wangan...

Posted by: DKW Mar 27 2007, 11:33 PM
Disposable characters are nothing unusual for most shonen manga, and a few long-running series have literally dozens of them (ever hear of Ranma 1/2?). The important ones are Akio Asakura, Tatsuya Shima, Reina Akikawa, Jun Takami, Koh Tominaga, Takayuki Kuroki, and Koichi Kijima. I personally don't give a damn if the studio janitor does Kochan or Harada.

WM may have more females, but when not a single one ever wears anthing except a long skirt or pants, I doubt that sex appeal is going to sell this.

Music? Somehow I doubt eurobeat's going to cut the mustard. I'm thinking either speed metal, the kind Kozo Nakamura does (a.k.a. "Guilty Gear music"), or the kind of techno with lots of instruments. And we gotta hear a rendition of the Reina song ("I've got to run, run after it") at some point.

And I may be the minority here (no, really?), but I don't see any conflict of interests with Initial D. Initial D is about being a racer. Wangan Midnight is about driving a really fast, expensive car. Some overlap, but not quite the same.

This is going to be awesome. Someone come up with preliminary screenshots sometime, all right?

Car Fairlady Z looks pretty well done :

here interview of Usami, Tsuchiya and Oguri at the Tokyo Anime fair show 2007 (March 23). If someone could translate it. They spoke about difference between intial D and wangan midnight in animation, how they did to made it more realistic, high speed (over 300 Km/h for the cars) etc...

Tried Google translating the thing. Cleaned it up slightly to make it just a bit easier to understand. The translation isn't perfect, and there are some bits I can't correct.

QUOTE (A crappy translation)
First one word Oguri: "Today, being able to look at up-to-date images for
the first time, it does, but the appearance being good enormously, it
has been excited enormously with it keeps making from now onundefined

"The one
which is done: ""Wangan midnight "it is the unknown world for me, but
when the book is read, it may be sucked by that world being, whether
how it keeps becoming from now on Tsuchiya who is the pleasure": "In"
Initial D "it is the continuation, but this time, with" Initial D ",
we would like to keep relating to the world of the speed per hour 300
kilometers per hour which it is not possible and image and sound and the part of
that which have force. "

Usami: "You have been surprised to so many
people getting together. We would like to make the work which does not
betray this degree of attention. "

As for the opportunity which you tried to animation to convert
this work?

Usami: "7 and 8 years it is" Initial D ", doing for a long
time, now, it reached the point where it can do the kind of work which
finally it can be satisfied. As for "Initial D" what you think that we
would like to make the story of the people who attracted in charm of
the car vis-a-vis being the work which puts emphasis on technique of
the driver, is "Wangan Midnight". The bewitchment which the car itself
has we would like to see we would like to express the thing as visual,
is.

When this work to animation being converted, some kind of charm is
expressed, probably will be?

Usami: "With" Initial D ", it was the
world of over 110 km/h, pass, but when you mention 300km/h
from now on, it keeps entering to the world where it does not have
either Tetsu. In the world of 300km/h being some charm? Because as for
most people as for the worldwide impression you do not understand,
when to visual it could convert around that, you think that is.

When doing this work of the question ≫ to ≪ Oguri is decided, as
for thought?

Oguri: "We like me myself, the car, but you do not know
the world of speed. Reading the original, because you were charmed
very, you tried probably to persevere. "

Concerning the part, Asakura Akio

Oguri: "It is taciturn
part enormously, but while as strength of the core that to make
thinking important, among those, you are charmed in Z, we would like
to do, is. "

When doing this work of the question ≫ to the one which the
≪ is done is decided, as for thought?

The one which it does: Because
you thought, that "we would like to do absolutely, when being decided,
it was delightful truly, is. And, the partner hearing Oguri, all the
more you were glad. There are lines of the script which is
transferred, because you felt, that there is a part where the place
where feeling is thrown enormously has been similar to me when we
would like to do absolutely, is. "

The one which is done Akikawa Reina 奈 with concerning the part
which is said: "Because Reina Akikawa is more seductive than me, in order
to be able to put out amorousness, you intend to intensively train
(laughing)"

The question ≫ to ≪ Tsuchiya concrete supervision?
Tsuchiya: "There is many a detailed thing, the small mother-in-law we
would like to see it is work. For example, when the car of 300
horsepower and 500 horsepower departs with 1st gear, because method of
catching the torque is different, method of sinking the rear is
different when, as for the corner which I saw vis-a-vis image it can
go with 4th gear not to be 3rd gear when, such a clean guardrail it is
not that, is small, is. It is hateful part (laughing)"

As for such small place it is important in the fan in "Wangan
Midnight", don't you think??

Usami: "That with the liver of this work,
even with" Initial D "so being to be, it does, but the person who
knows the car truly seeing, in order to make the kind of work which
does not have strange feeling we have requested the supervision to the
small place in Tsuchiya. "

Tsuchiya: "Everyone as for the speed which bodily sensation it
is possible 150? With 200km/h, us as for the speed which bodily
sensation it is possible with race/lace 340km/h. Method of flying the
light, with "Initial D" the speed impression and sound and the
vibration which of 8000 revolutions which are clear with 6 fast gears
cannot be displayed, expression of the world where it exceeds 300km/h
is difficult, is, but, we would like to keep making kind of those
where 2 people of the leading part can shine is. "

It's ironic that Wangan Midnight was actually meant to be a highway racing that does not contain any form of drifting, only grip. Of course, that's what I observed in the manga. The 'drifts' in the manga are actually near spin outs or absolute loss of control.

It's ironic that Wangan Midnight was actually meant to be a highway racing that does not contain any form of drifting, only grip. Of course, that's what I observed in the manga. The 'drifts' in the manga are actually near spin outs or absolute loss of control.

Even the Shutokou Battle Series, which the original WM game was based on, was about grip racing. As for the sounds, I hope they get them right, especially the engine note of an air-cooled flat-6.

The series will be produced by OB Planning, the same studio behind the production of the Initial D anime series.[1] Keiichi Tsuchiya (土屋圭市) will be help with editorial supervision on this series as well.

well well. If the same team that made Initial D's anime version is gonna do this plus technical supervision from Tsuchiya Keiichi himself, then I'll definitely be expecting big things from this anime. biggrin.gif

Seeing the 3DCG model of the Devil Z was enough to excite me about this already. lol

I doubt we'll be expecting something similar to Maximum Tune though since I've heard from a friend of mine who actually read the manga that Akio loves crashing the Devil Z after almost every race he's been. sad.gif

Posted by: Hatch Guy Apr 9 2007, 03:00 PM
It would be interesting if they put a special guest appearance of Tsuchiya in Wangan Midnight anime like they do in Initial D First Stage and Shutokou Battle Movies. pinch2.gif

Posted by: HashiriyaR32 Apr 10 2007, 10:52 AM
Tsuchiya a MAIN character (not just a cameo) in SKT2 & 5 IIRC.

Posted by: mark4000 Apr 13 2007, 04:39 PM
I just realized this but does anyone know what kind of soundtrack will we be hearing in the anime. I know the same guys who did initial D will make this but it doesn't exactly mean that we'll also be hearing more Eurobeat right?

Or are they going to use more Trance music created by Yuzo Koshiro?

Soundtrack similar to the console versions?

or maybe they're going to do something totally original? (i highly doubt it and it'll probably suck if they did >_> )

Posted by: Hatch Guy Apr 13 2007, 07:23 PM
happy.gif I would hope they used trance or techno, since its more fast paced.

They probably will, considering it's the kind of music they use in the games, right?

Hmmm, interestingly enough the team that is listed as doing the 3D CG is the production house that did all of Initial D with the exception of Fourth Stage.

Posted by: mark4000 Apr 14 2007, 03:33 PM
I guess the production team won't be having too much of a hard time with this one unlike in initial D when it comes to the CG animations since Wangan Midnight races aren't as "flashy" as ID races. Cars in Wangan almost always keep running on straight roads afterall.

I hope they keep building on the storyline and dont lose it like ID did.

I only mentioned it because it's the most boring track in the game lol

Posted by: Ramaj May 6 2007, 08:52 PM
well they will probably have to show stuff in other places, i mean.. imagine if initial d all the races were on akina for the whole series.. it would be boring..

now granted, they can get around this if they not only show the racing aspect, but go into the peoples lives as well, like have akio get in a car accident and be taken to the hospital and there is the doctor and akio is like "YOU!!!!" and the doctor be like "god damnit kid, i knew you were gonna crash again" and then they go race or something..

i mean they have to branch out otherwise it will stale and fail as a series..

but they can show other highways like when people take their cars out for test runs go on like C1 and have akio like going to visit his cousin in the country and wind up racing some guy down hakone... things like that...

have like wangan be the home track but other stuff happening elsewhere also.

Posted by: DKW May 7 2007, 12:42 AM
The biggest problems with making this "story-based" is that the principal characters...well, besides racing, they hardly have any story. Not only that, but none of the easy templates...ferocious rivalry, love triangle, unrequited crush, scrappy underdog beating increasingly tougher challenges...are present here.

The main issue, IMO, is that this basic premise is almost a complete 180 from the standard shonen model. The young hero receives the ultimate weapon/tool/item/ability almost from the very beginning. From that point, he not only instantly ceases to be an underdog, he becomes the man to beat, and everyone knows it and is out to get him because of that. The established, well-known, universally respected sempai figure (Tatsuya Shima) not only is the best at what he does and initially much better than the young hero, he always remains at or near the top, never giving way. In other words, even if an anime company wanted to invent a plot or character out of whole cloth, it'd be a massive challenge just fitting it into this model.

As long as the race scenes are convincing (lots of traffic, tremendous speed, nerves constantly on edge, and big wrecks) and there's a reasonable amount of non-racing plot, I'm happy. Still no reason not to look forward to this.

And yes, Reina does look pretty. Can't wait to see Rikako. No offense, but she's practically mannish in the manga.

Posted by: mark4000 May 7 2007, 12:47 AM
the only stories I see in the manga were when they introduce characters. A few volumes after those....well........nada...none.....zip.....dry.gif

Well, they hired the same director of 4th Stage, so that pretty much leaves any hopes of character development out. But let's not kid ourselves, they're making this show for the same audience who read the manga. 20 something year old Japanese guys that probably spend more time at Denny's than at 2ch. Not exactly anime fans per se, but that's precisely why we're looking forward to this. Cut the emotions and snip the melodrama; just give me unabashed mechanic jargon, high speed trance, and two cocky protagonists. Isn't that why we like Wangan in the first place.

Posted by: MAD MAX May 7 2007, 04:24 PM
As long as I see good/realistic racing and Akio working on his car, I'm happy. Wangan Midnight is a technical racing manga and I hope its going to be the same with the anime.

As for the storyline, I think they will focus on Akio and his Z. They will probably show different opponents practicing and tuning their cars to beat Akio or Tetsuya on the expressways.

Posted by: Akira May 7 2007, 07:17 PM
The cell-shading MUST be done by the guys that did the stuff in ID, looks like it jumped out of the same anime. XD

Posted by: Dflowen May 7 2007, 07:39 PM
Akio better lose in his races or it will be like Initial D where Takumi wins every races against an advanced car. Hope it's not a predictable anime ...."Oh look Akio can't lose he's the main character..." Or maybe Takumi and D Appear on the highway or crossover hahaahah.

Animation cars in wangan it's great but the music is not like eurobeat. I don't like it. And link i thank, in wangan there isn't a lot technic like in initial D. always more power...

Well, I took notice some familiar cars in the episode that were cameos.

-Ferrari Testarossa (Spotted for a split second)
-Subaru SVX (Spotted as a scrap car. The same friggin colour that was continuously haunting in Initial D as well)
-Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE86) [Was spotted for a split second)
-Toyota Corolla Levin (AE86)
-Mini Cooper
-Ford Cosworth (?)

Well other than the usuals....yeah...

You spotted the SVX too!!!!! laugh.gif

I spotted two more nice cars though (Loved the Sierra Cosworth):
-1991 Subaru Legacy SS (NICE!!!!)
-198X Toyota Celica XX

Dude, this Anime is AWESOME for car cameos!!!! I can only hope that as the show progresses we get more!!!!!!

That said... @#^*&^&(*! CAN'T END THAT WAY!!!! NEED EPISODE 2 NOW!!!!! pinch2.gif

The only problem I have with it is the music. The music wasn't bad but it could have definitely used a Trance/Progressive soundtrack like MaxiTune. I don't think Eurobeat would work on the Wangan line as well as it did on the mountain passes in ID. Everything else was simply awesome. I didn't hear the Devil Z's cool BOV sund though, or does Akio install it later?

Oh snap... This is going to be some interesting tidbit for you all...

The show was previewed on Animax yesterday, but will only really start airing next Saturday on pay-per-view, where the plan is to show two episodes per month. I’ll give it a few more episodes at least.

Use Bittornado its like I think the opposite of bittorrent

Some people use bittorent cuz it works for their comptuer

And some use Bittornado cuz that works for their computer

My computer is more better at using bittorent than bittornado.Or unless are you talking about those episode where you right click and save I dunno about those.

Just watched the raw. Quality is great as expected from OB planning. I dont know about you guys but I think the music actually fits the racing scenes because the races here aren't as dynamic as the ones in Initial D so I feel that it's a good thing they didnt use fast paced eurobeat tunes.

Fortunately for me, the script is similar to the manga most of the time so I just watched the thing while reading the manga lol. However, it seems they added a few scenes as well as alter and delete some that where in the manga. (i.e. Eriko wasnt with Tatsuya during the race at the end of the episode)

Anyways. It looks like this'll be a good anime to look forward to but I guess not much to get too excited about unless you really like Wangan Midnight alot.

Hopefully, I wont get to see major alterations to the story when it reaches the later episodes like in Initial D but this is just a personal preference more than anything else.

WTH at lookalike of Tohru's Roadster?

And anyone notice that the first time Akio starts the engine and gooses the gas a few times, the BOV sound is the same as Nakazato's R32?

Do anyone of you feel like the making of the CG animations on this anime is probably abit easier and faster than the ones in Initial D? I dunno... After watching 4th stage then this, it just crossed my mind all of a sudden.

Posted by: DXPetti Jun 11 2007, 02:25 AM
The dark music that played when the Porsche turned up was great. Just set the mood perfectly. I do see many similarities with Initial D but I am thanking god the lead character doesn't sound anything like Takumi (that would be horrid).

Looking forward to ep2 (and subs for ep1)

EDIT: That was a preview episode ohmy.gif That sounds about right. IIRC the main character totals his first car (300zx?) and thats when he picks up the Devil Z? (corrent me if I am wrong)

yeah the music is really good. I wanted to ask, the second music just after the intro; does anyone know it.

QUOTE

i dont think so. He never recked the 300ZX. He was just outrunned by the BlackBird and went out looking for upgrades the next day but instead, spots the S30Z in the scrapyard. The same happened in the manga.

Posted by: Sanae Jun 11 2007, 02:43 AM
Finished watching the raw last night and, asides the fact that I actually understood a fair bit of it, I like the way it feels a lot like the Fourth Stage of Initial D. It's highly reassuring to see the same level of quality in the animation and the fact that they've improved a lot the manga's character design which, I confess, it kind of put me off reading it in the first place.

I hope they keep it up!

but I am thanking god the lead character doesn't sound anything like Takumi (that would be horrid).

Probably won't happen since Akio crashes quite a few times while trying to tame the Z's power, but he always manages to walk away with minor scrapes and blood injuries.

Posted by: Ramaj Jun 11 2007, 03:53 AM
I didn't even see reina except for like in the opening and it wasn't a good enough look to judge since I was paying more attention to the animation style than the actual character at the time.

although akio looks pretty good. if he got the surgery he'd be fair game.

anyways, I like the animation and like the story, and even though it's in japanese I already know what goes on in this part so it's fun to know the story but not the exact lines and just make up new lines that still follow the same plot and story.

Hey, I didn't mean it in THAT sense but hey, while we're at it, Akio sure looks much better in the anime than he does in the manga. Can't wait to see how they carry on with the story. So far, it looks like they're sticking quite closely to the manga and I'm only too happy that they are.

Posted by: mark4000 Jun 11 2007, 05:16 AM
lol. Dont get me wrong. I'm just glad that they didnt stick to that aweful early 90s look. Although I have to admit that the characters look quite dull compared to the ones in 4th stage IMHO.

Posted by: Xtreme Drifter Jun 11 2007, 05:28 AM
Anyone knows where I can download the wangan midnight in manga?

The animation is good, like initial D. I think the Wangan Midnight looks almost like Initial D. The best friend of Akio reacts like Itsuki, Akio has the same spirit of Takumi, however... Shimo looks like Bunta, but it has Takumi's voice, ( laugh.gif ) maybe Ryosuke voice would be better with Shimo, but it's ok.

At the final, I liked the first episode of Wangan Midnight, and I am waiting to see what will happen next, since I never read/saw the manga of the Wangan Midnight.

GENTLEMEN, BEHOLD!

http://a.scarywater.net/omfg/%5BOMFG%5D_Wangan_Midnight_-_01_%5B7DC7CD86%5D.avi.torrent

I spent about four hours this morning and actually managed to finish subbing the whole episode in one sitting. That said, there's absolutely no fancy-ness in the subs, I didn't do any karaoke, I didn't translate newspaper clippings in annoying kanji, and honestly the encode could be better.

But right now... I doubt any of that matters. For the moment the release is bittorrent-only as it's just barely too large for SendSpace. I'll see what I can do about getting the filesize down.

Until next time,
