To be honest, I feel that the Facebook chat was as limiting as IRC. That is, not every member of IDW has a Facebook and/or checks regularly, and not everyone bothers to log on IRC. Having a localized chat feature on IDW assures that 100% of IDW-ers fill the IDW chat, just as it should be.
