So, I didn't do much shooting last year, and I want to change that for this year, and have so far gotten off to a decent start. Therefore, I'm making a thread where I can dump the highlights from meets and whatnot. A few local enthusiast groups share a weekly Wednesday meet that I drag my camera to as well. I shot at last week's and this week's meets: 3/15: Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7209/6837964904_28e64f2853_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. These look amazing! What camera set up do you use? |
Posted by: Spaz Mar 21 2012, 10:20 PM
Thank you! And the setup is the best part. All of these shots were taken using a 4-year-old Canon Rebel XS with the kit lens. My next upgrade is going to be a faster lens, anything with an f-number below 2 will be ideal to help contrast the background from the subject. |

Ahh, the holy trinity that is the RX-7 family. The RX-8 is the retarded 2nd cousin. |
Posted by: THE_HONDA_CG2 Apr 4 2012, 09:15 PM |
Woah. What are those two things popping out of the hood of that car? |
Posted by: Wanderer Apr 4 2012, 09:21 PM
They're called blowers, if I've got my vocab right. What you're seeing is basically where the engine get its oxygen from. A nose of sorts. When it revs, those two covers flip, allowing oxygen into the engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roots_type_supercharger

Grimmspeed STi, Gold BBS on Legacy, fap fap fap |
Posted by: Spaz Apr 5 2012, 06:37 AM
That Leggy belongs to that chick who used to have the Bugeye wagon. The car with the GrimmSpeed vinyl isn't a shop car, the dude's just got a ton of their parts on it and figured "why not?" It's a WRX with an STi motor, all sorts of loud and fun. As for the Vette, that's an enormous carb with forward facing intake/throttle plates (I'm not sure what they're called exactly, I only know EFI). It's only called a blower when there's actually a blower (supercharger) there. From what I hear, it's an old funny car motor, a 623, detuned for pump gas and street use, capable of 1800hp. |

I've taken a single photography class, and I learned very little in it. As with cars and computers, I'm mostly self-taught. And thanks for the votes of confidence, guys. I really appreciate it. If you saw the shots disappear a bit this morning, and noticed the ones that came back were a bit different... I made the mistake of processing these on my laptop last night, where the screen is far too bright, so I lost a stop of exposure on every shot. Current ones are fixed. Also, figured I'd post a pic for Tessou: Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5117/7070948499_f7f77e3739_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. Sexy shots, Spaz! I'm loving that white RX7. Now I kinda want to start a thread of my own. |
Posted by: Möbius Apr 12 2012, 04:38 PM
Go for it, man. |
Posted by: Spaz Apr 12 2012, 07:33 PM
Do it! Also, my buddy's FB is awesome. S4 13B, twin side-draft carb (don't remember the brand, but it's Italian) into a Racing Beat intake, Racing Beat cat-delete downpipe, stock catback, S4 trans, 4.78 LSD rear end, ridiculous sway bars, and Koni yellows. Stupid cheap build, and I'm damn certain it would pull ever so slowly on a stock Evo, as I need 15psi just to keep up. I'm still surprised he managed to get his hands on that spoiler though, $60 for a rare factory option that usually goes for multiple hundreds. He's also got the removable roof panel, which was rare on the GS models. In short, that car is my motivation to pay off the Evo and pick up an FB project. |
Posted by: backalleyracer Apr 13 2012, 12:57 AM |
FB's are so cheap - its a joke. Speaking off.. I plan on picking up a FB myself pretty quick here... I have a spare TII block that needs a home |

Really greats shots Spaz and great thread to start. I don't know why but I really like the 03-05 STi in black. Always thought it looked best in that color. |

I must be the only person in this thread infatuated with that convertible pickup. It looks sexah. |

Posted by: Spaz Apr 29 2012, 07:29 AM |
No sir. It's equipped with a shorter VIN and everything. The registration runs out on it tomorrow and the state's being a real stickler about getting it retitled and registered due to it not having been brought into the country legally by the guy who sold it to him. |
Posted by: Fast May 6 2012, 01:01 PM |
Thats a real sexy shot of that Grand National, always loved those cars. And of course, that JDM GC8 is just . |
Posted by: Rudy May 6 2012, 01:06 PM
Time to find a wrecked Craigslist Impreza coupe with a title and pull off a little vin swap. :3 |
Posted by: Spaz May 6 2012, 09:20 PM
We keep telling him to do that, but he's too paranoid because of how much he's badgered the state about the car. They were supposed to have a talk on Friday between them, an officer, and the dealer that sold it, but the owner of the dealer (that no longer exists, big surprise) flaked out. Tuesday is the new day, but we'll see what happens. I met the guy before and wanted to lay him out after about 5 minutes of conversation, he's such a toolbag. |
Posted by: Spaz May 9 2012, 10:06 PM |

I love the 'FUC* YOU' sticker. This is quite possibly the most creative thing I've seen with the silhouette of the state of Minnesota ever. I wonder if California has anything like this... |
Posted by: Spaz May 9 2012, 10:45 PM |
LOL! That sticker is amazing, you see so many of them at meets around here. |
Posted by: THE_HONDA_CG2 May 9 2012, 10:56 PM |
Can you hook me up with one? Or is it only limited to Minnesotans? I'll trade you one for an In-N-Out bumper sticker like the one that's on my laptop! |
Posted by: Spaz May 10 2012, 09:20 AM |
I'll try to remember to pick one up, a buddy of mine cuts them. |

Well then... It looks like it is high time for me to make another stop by In-N-Out University to pick me up a few more of those bumper stickers. Oh! I know! Everyone who attends the AX meet can sign a couple and I can mail them out to the winners of the forum awards! |

What are you talking about? I like to graffiti my name all over items of value to give to people all the time. I don't think it's a big deal signing things, in fact; signatures make it even more special! Don't you want a In-N-Out bumper sticker signed by Perry, Tessou, me and the others? Because I do. |

Another awesome batch of pics sir! I'm really digging the white S2000! Are these from Texas? Or will we be getting a huge post of those in the near future? |
Posted by: Spaz Jun 9 2012, 12:21 AM
Nope, these are from this past Wednesday's Sonic meet. I didn't take a ton at MOD in Texas, the event was nowhere near as big as I expected it to be. I'm glad the main reason I went down there was eating, drinking, and shenans, because if it had been for MOD specifically I'd have been unhappy with the trip. Those pics are processed but have yet to be uploaded. They're all daytime pics, so with my lack of lenses and filters they're kinda whatever which is why I've been lazy about them. I'll get them up in the next couple days. |
Posted by: backalleyracer Jun 9 2012, 05:47 AM |
photo's are slowly getting better do you do any touch up work on them or just post them as is? |
Posted by: Spaz Jun 9 2012, 09:36 AM
I do plenty of touch-up on them. Things are at a point where I genuinely feel that it's a waste of my time to play around with camera settings between shots, when it's so much easier to set the aperture for desired depth of field and let the camera pick a shutter speed, since I have so many adjustments I can make to the RAW data after dumping the photos to the computer. All of them get 4-point lighting-based adjustments, from highlights to shadows, then most get color saturation adjustments as well. Nothing crazy, and nothing that couldn't be done on film with knowledge and skill. As a result, it allows me to focus largely on composing the image instead of worrying about metering exposures and doing maths. |
Posted by: backalleyracer Jun 9 2012, 02:11 PM |
I use a similar approach (great, now I sound super hipster) but I find I tend to take multiple shots at the same angle with different settings and then see which one I like best - then further enhance it later at home |
Posted by: Spaz Jun 11 2012, 01:59 PM
Shooting RAW does a pretty good job of eliminating the need for multiple shots in my mind. That's not to say I don't know how to meter and properly expose a photo on the camera side though, I just think it's easier and better worth my time post-processing. And with that, the few MOD photos I published: This one belongs to Pirana, it's a fairly well known car in the community: Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/7177951685_14980a7fb8_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. Pirana looks hot. These are from the meet in Texas right? Did you get to see any of these guys in action? If so did you manage to take a video of them? If so are you going to post them? |

Yep, those're from Texas. Only car I really got to see in action was the Graphite Gray X MR whose front end is visible in the pic of the Cobb booth. Car makes 416whp on their Mustang dyno. I'll get some vids of quick Evos from MAP Proving Grounds later this month. |

How the heck does that truck get over speed bumps? Or how does it get over dips, or pot holes, or how does it drive over anything that isn't a flat surface? |

Well, the average person can't hand-hold anything under 1/50th without it blurry, as a friend of mine demonstrated when she stole my camera for like 10 minutes last night, none of the shots came out and all were under that speed. Damn near everything I took before the sun went down was lower shutter and came out fine, I don't know how I pulled it off in all honesty. Surgeon's hands from all the caffeine maybe? Regardless, I still need lighting equipment and better lenses. That's what's holding me back right now. |

Yeah, my buddy Mark's Talon 'vert is awesome. He needs to finish up with some bodywork on it, it was in storage for 11 years before he dropped a motor in it and put the Talon panels on this spring. He bought it new in '98 and was the first person to ever swap the AWD drivetrain into a Spyder. That car's got one hell of history. The motor let go on the dyno though, he pulled it apart yesterday and figures it a total loss, rods are bent, bearings are toast, so out goes an 8 year old built motor that was in 4 of his cars and who knows what's next. |

MSRA was there in force this year: Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8512/8548873536_9ff0e533b2_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. Jeep had a fairly amusing ride along exhibit: Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8367/8569511707_0a613d4938_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. Mercedes had a pretty good looking concept that will never turn into anything near as good looking: Scion had a test drive set up outside the Convention Center, and I did that as well... And I'm glad I did. I have to say, I felt right at home behind the wheel of the FRS, I was needlessly impressed with the car. I kind of really want one for a daily now. |

Get a FRS as a daily! Just do eet spaz! You know you want one in midnight blue or something. Anyhow I'm sure you have a lot more pictures to post up so I'll wait for those before calling on a favorite. [ Post made via Mobile Device ] |

Oh my freaking god, I LOVE the throwback Evolution sticker on the rear. If I owned or built a Lan Evo, that's EXACTLY what I'd put on the trunk! |

Okay, so about that Evo I mentioned. I'll start out by clarifying that if you don't understand it, it's not a big deal. Not everyone will. That's part of what makes it special. There's a reason there's a waiting list of over 200 people for 11 cars, because there will be an aggressive weed-out interview process. But some people just can't get over the fact that it's $49k for an Evo. So, I'll start from the beginning. Ryan Gates is a name you may have heard before. You may not have. All the same, he single-handedly proved to the world that the Evo X was a very competent and competitive platform, that it could hang with (and run circles around) the proven pillars in the time attack world like its nine other siblings. He went undefeated in the Redline Time Attack series for a year and a half on street tires with a stock motor, until the motor failed catastrophically on-course, setting the car aflame and forcing a complete rebuild from the ground up. This is that car now: Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8233/8548863332_195985c0bd_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8093/8547616615_c83af9ed23_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. Mumphrey was there hanging out too, and he's seen better days, but you would too if you'd jumped out of a car window at over 120mph. Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8524/8548815608_c63f7e8e13_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. So that's where it all started... Ryan finished off what was left of his second season, winning and setting even more records, and after that decided that racing series were too constricting, that he wanted to race where he wanted, when he wanted, and without the chains of fair classification. So he retired and did just that. In his downtime, he managed to source and acquire an '09 Evo X... A model year that never existed. It was a Mitsubishi development car, and he had plans for it. He built a street car for the track, he made it his own, added little touches here and there, and then did a pre-reveal out in California; He called the car the 311RS, 311 for his life-long racing number, RS to symbolize the track-ready status of the car, as used by Mitsubishi on previous Evo generations. He will build 11 of them, installing the package himself, by hand, in a warehouse unit here in Minneapolis. Each will be ready to lap out of the box, but still capable of daily driving. The prototype car went 20,000 TRACK miles and god knows how many on the street, and after such a successful display, Mitsubishi agreed to provide a FULL FACTORY WARRANTY for all 11 cars. Specs and stuff I don't want to be overly boring with here: http://www.311rs.com/ So on 3/11, Ryan officially unveiled and delivered the first 311RS to its owner at the Minneapolis Auto Show. I visited the show twice this year, and spent around 40 minutes chatting with Ryan both times. Knowing the man allows me a very unique window into what the car is, what it means, and a deep understanding of the small touches and their significance. The car is in effect a reflection of Ryan himself, his knowledge and experience, his passion, and his overall love for Evos. He built these cars to be driven, to be beaten on, to have rubber plastered on the skirts. That's the point of these cars, from stock to fully built, and he built the 311RS to channel and fuel that spirit. Image size reduced, original size: 800 x 534. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8111/8569551767_1a1d6e243c_c.jpg to view the image in its original dimension. The Mitsubishi display actually received a trophy as well for Ryan's lighting, further proof of his striving for perfection in what he does: As I said, not everyone will understand. It's $49k for an Evo. Sure, it comes with an orientation day at the road course of your choice, but it's still $49k, for an Evo. But that's not the point, it's never been the point. And some people will never see past that. But for those of us that do, it's something incredibly special that the pioneer and champion of the Evo X is doing... Not for money, or recognition and fame, but from the bottom of his heart, to give back to a community and brand that has been such a huge part of his life. And I want one. |

Spazzy my dear friend, I have the power of telekinesis so I can read minds and see what you see. Bullshit aside. Midnight blue FRSesessseses look amazing, I can totally see you rolling around in one. And I'm calling a favorite now! All those pictures of the 311RS are amazing. Don't tell me you're on the waiting list for one of these guys. |

As many times on Sunday as I mentioned to Ryan needing to talk to my credit union, no, sadly, I am not. |

Nice pictures of that legendary evo. I don't think you should get a FR-S/BR-Z, you'll start by using it as a DD, but hell will break loose and next thing you know it'll be a full on track car |
Posted by: Spaz Mar 27 2013, 06:24 PM
I don't think I'd have issues. The idea, (and I know it's blasphemous) for a DD would be to get whatever I get in an automatic so I'm even less tempted to fuck with it. I have a car that's GREAT to fuck with, and it will continue to be so in the future. I don't need to end up with two cars that could serve the same purpose. So anyway, there was a last showing of the 311RS in the form of a meet-and-greet at a local Mitsu dealer before it heads off to the NY Auto Show and then to its new owner. Seeing as I knew quite a number of attendees, I didn't spend a ton of time talking to Ryan, but when I left I did further discuss logistics on having my steering wheel leather removed and wrapped in the motorsport spec suede used on the 311RS wheel, considering it needs it, and beyond that he mentioned the possibility of an exclusive party at the warehouse over the summer when the other 10 cars are in there being torn down. Much excite. |

Bump for fall shoots. Did a test run of a couple spots with the Evo with only one usable pic, then hit it up again with Grappler and a couple other buddies tonight. Going out again on Saturday with the Evo again, along with a ZL1 and a Supra! The past few years have been shit for fall colors but the rain we got this spring was PERFECT setup for this. Well, it's been a while since I did any shooting of anything, but Euroworks was yesterday, and this was my first time ever going. had a great time, got to catch up with a few people and got a chance to play with the camera a bit more. As is customary, highlights followed by a link to everything in high res. Enjoy! I asked, and no, it won't fit an Evo. So, the AWD Army dyno day was at Boostin Performance in Chicago this past weekend (that and being super busy at work and with the car can be attributed to my recent lack of activity) and I did some photography for the event since I'm on staff for AWD Army anyway. Didn't get as many photos as I would have liked in hindsight, but I got some decent ones. Some may have noticed I disappeared for a bit, and the reason is VEGAS! Specifically SEMA and the Optima OUSCI, and while I unfortunately didn't get an invite to race, I had plenty of fun hanging out and turning wrenches, helping with strategy, etc. We ended up having to replace a wheel bearing on our 3rd place finisher, and we swapped turbos (well, half of them, we moved the compressor and center sections and left the hotsides in their respective cars) from our 9th place car to our at the time 4th place car, which turned it into a 2nd place car. Not a single dull moment with us, I tell you. Out of 125 possible points for the weekend, the spread between P1 and P3 was 1.8 points. That's ONE POINT EIGHT. That's how close this was, and how close we came to taking this home. Next year it's game on, and I fully intend to get my own invite as well. Anyway, here are my OUSCI photos. I'll get SEMA stuff edited and posted in a few days here. There's bonus IDW member meetup stuff in there as well! I'll be staring at this one longingly for months... Now the real question is... where's that pic of Spaz, Sideways, and Starion getting smashed inside the Evo with 50 shades of German beer!? |
Posted by: Spaz Nov 13 2015, 01:42 PM
Thanks! That STi is about at the limit of what a top mount can handle so that's the solution to keeping intake temps cool. It's surprisingly effective. And there was no Starion present, unfortunately... Nor any content with my car, which stayed home. There is a pic of me, Grappler, and Sensation! though that I have yet to edit. There's also a pic taken by Sensation! of me and Sideways. And I have to say it's rare for me to be able to sit down with anyone and talk tech to the level that we did for as long as we did, both are awesome guys. I'm glad I had the chance to meet up with them, it had really been a long time coming. |
Posted by: xiao Nov 14 2015, 12:03 AM
You guys seriously need to make a couple of one-off videos shooting the breeze a'la Top Gear, with nothing but tech-talk man. First episode... 'Replacing a cast-iron exhaust for some 9000 decibel headers + oil pan melting aluminium pipes + canon mufflers + scrapping those stock cats for, well... nothing~ huh, what's emissions!?' Does Matt still have his Rolla? You'll have to excuse me, I was AFK for approx 5 years. xD |
Posted by: Sensation! Nov 14 2015, 10:45 AM
We certainly talked cars alright. It's confirmed without any shadow of a doubt that Spazzy is what the IDW auto section needs and deserves. He's floh without being a big meanie. And yes, Matt does indeed still own his corolla, however it's been out of commission for a few years now due to a mishap involving an acquaintance. As for the pictures, well...I actually don't have my main phone at the moment, it's being used as a benchmark tool. Pictures of our very VERY late night dinner will be up as soon as I get my phone back in a week. |

Haha. I'm pretty sure he does, but I'll admit, as connected of a life as I try to live, it's pretty hard to keep track of people who keep deactivating their Facebook. In other news, the wifi chip in my Surface Pro 3 seems to have shit the bed (SP2 OP) so I'll need to move everything off of that in prep to ship it to MS for service, and that's going to take priority over getting more photos edited. I have all the RAWs on my desktop but it's just finding time around everything else (especially FO4) that's a bitch. |
Posted by: xiao Nov 14 2015, 01:30 PM
That better not have been involving any sort of Trigun cosplay with a real life Mateba!?
Y'all need to just switch to WhatsApp. That way you can spend 3/4ths of your work day texting nothing but |
Posted by: Spaz Nov 15 2015, 09:34 AM
I totally missed this, something about hitting reply and then doing other stuff at work before actually replying... Our meeting up was such a long time coming that a few more days won't kill anyone, ha. And I'm honestly honored to have you compare me to Floh. Even with him having stepped away from racing entirely and taking up snowboarding for the past few years, the dude is still head and shoulders above me, both as a driver and as a knowledge base. But to be considered among the same company, I'll certainly take it, but I can't help but be humble about it. |
Posted by: xiao Nov 15 2015, 03:27 PM |
^ We just need to enlist you as an AF tech for the next couple of years, move you to Japan, then Germany, have you rebuild a couple of SR20DET's in the middle of the street with nothing Deutschland brew, put you on the Nürb after a long hazzy night in Paris with nothing but a scratchy copy of Cowboys From Hell, and we're all set! Seriously though, you do rock Spaz~ when I came back and saw you post, I'd thought Matt had changed his username, but then I saw you in the Evo & said, oh cool! Another oldie but goodie is Sobaer~ I wonder what happened to him... having a kid must've taken up quite a bit of time; but he was a pretty hands on techie guy. I think he lives somewhere around Arizona, so I should probably organize a southwest meet or something & include the IDW ppls in SoCal while we're at it... Bubs too, but I've no clue where he lives; last post I saw from him he was going sideways on the dirt like a true rally art Bob Ross~ But yeah, we're really blessed to have someone that knows his Brembos from his Bilsteins in Spaz! |
Posted by: Spaz Nov 19 2015, 10:32 AM |
The military doesn't want me due to reasons of mental fitness, specifically ADHD, so getting shipped all over to turn wrenches (and play with cars in my free time) was never an option, though I did consider it. Sobaer did indeed disappear, haven't seen him around in a long time. Bubs is indeed living the rally life, or as close to it as he can. He and I keep in touch via FB. He's in the Northeast, so if I end up racing in NJ this year I'll try to convince him to come hang out. Should be a pretty empty (and double points as a result) event so it may actually be worth the trek on those merits alone. |

haha oh god hahaha!
It's more or less the attitude and passion. Flohs downside of course seemed that he was blinded by it and refused to consider cars as hobby other than going out and setting fast lap times. Aesthetics? blah! 5 years ago, I would've agreed with him, but my POV now is that ANYTHING involving non-collector cars as a hobby is a huge waste of time and money. And therein comes the passion. Going out, working on your car, studying the mechanics and the physics, then taking that knowledge as a sum and putting it to the test you better yourself as a driver? That's top notch stuff. Spending money on it and doing it proper with the knowledge that it might never net you monetary wealth? Even more hardcore, that's real passion. That's where the respect comes from. Since you're nicer in floh, you've probably surpassed him in some ways. Its important to lead people into the right direction when it comes to this industry/hobby, there's a huge difference between people who like cars and people who are passionate about them. You're easily the latter, and we could use more of the latter, less of the former. Granted, I don't think I thought much of cmspaz back when he owned a DSM. But ever since that 2nd evo? It's a total 180. Take that knowledge, lead some of the younger people into the right direction if they wanna be into cars, just as it was done to me. While the aftermarket is not where I want to be, I seriously can't imagine myself not working with cars. The friendly local guy willing to share knowledge is the best start for anyone willing to set foot into this world. |
Posted by: xiao Dec 2 2015, 05:37 AM
Bonus points if you include your kuro neko with ya in the next pic~!
That's the difference between a professional and a hobbyist. I've never seen a video of a professional driver, engineer, designer, mechanic, race queen unwilling to share their secrets of the trade to us the next generation. Most hobbyists you see strutting their stuff in big-time boards like RX-7 and Foot~Hachi Club have their e-personas so far up their butt, they act like movie stars. But those lucky few putting bread on the table with their professional nine-to-five jobs they... well they're secure enough in their passion, that even showing a newbie the ropes on how to change their oil is a joy for them. Spaz is definitely a diamond in the rough, with the heart of a pro ☆ |
Posted by: Spaz Dec 2 2015, 02:04 PM |
Thanks guys, really. The best way I've found to put it is that among all those stacks of tires, I found a slice of humble pie. I don't think much of who I was as an enthusiast back when I owned my DSM or my first Evo, either, for the record. Not that I wasn't a nice guy, but I had a chip on my shoulder with no real experience and little knowledge to back it up. I'd never competed above 60mph in a parking lot. I didn't know how actual racing worked, or how actual prepped cars came together from a blank canvas. I would even now argue that I still don't have a complete picture. My deflated ego and fresh reboot were what opened me up to learn all that I have, however. Year after year I made stupid mistakes and never learned because I never wanted to listen, not that there was anybody there to do more than make off-handed comments. Not until recently were people willing to sit me down and drill into me that I was indeed being stupid. I just want to be able to make sure others don't repeat my mistakes. The funny part is that it's always the little, one or two line trivial things you learn from those more accomplished than yourself that stand out the most, regardless of how much all of it sinks in. Then again, anyone that I get into this hobby is repeating my biggest mistake; getting into this hobby. |

So, over the weekend I was sent on an adventure... I was flown down to Arizona, tasked with taking delivery of a friend's new to him S2000 and driving it back to Minnesota. 3 hours in a plane, 25 in a car, and a total of 6 hours of sleep for the 48 the trip accounted for. I'm felling a bit sick, I'll admit, because I'm not as young as I like to pretend that I am most of the time, but it was a ton of fun and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I left from Phoenix and headed north toward Flagstaff, hoping for a good opportunity to get a shot of the car with the mountains just north of there, but after cruising around Flagstaff for a bit and running out of time to waste, I gave up on it, there were no good stopping points. I did manage to spend some time on Historic Route 66, however, so it wasn't a complete waste. As my dad put it on Facebook; "Driving Route 66 with the top down in February. A dream come true." And outside of only being sunburned on the right half of my body, I'll agree! I did make a stop off the 40 for fuel and found a spot for a few quick shots. Continued on after that, and noticed the sun starting to dip near the horizon as I made the climb out of Albuquerque. Frantically scanning the exits for the next few minutes, I spotted a gas station with a clear view of the western horizon and dipped across two lanes to make the exit. Managed this one out of it. From there, I made my way east, than started northward before entering Texas, through the tip of Oklahoma (just the tip), and made my stop for the night in Liberal, KS, a name that describes the owner of this car way more accurately than it could ever describe any singular location in Kansas. Slept for 3 hours and jumped back on the road before sun up. The sun began to come up around 2 hours later, and I was able to again find a great spot to stop off the highway. From there, the goal was minimal stops, I wanted to be home for another friend's Super Bowl party, where I would deliver the car to its owner. I have no more photos from here forward. However, the car had midway through the previous day developed a misfire under load in the higher gears, but it was starting to get worse and I was toying with the idea of stopping and finding plugs. I called the owner and informed him, and he went and picked up a set up here so we could do them when I arrived. However, the car had other plans. North of Des Moines, it began to misfire while just cruising at speed. That was the mail in the coffin. I called ahead to Ames, and the O'Reilly there had the plugs I needed, so I swung in there and changed the plugs in the parking lot. 1, 2, and 3 all came out looking used, but read just fine, no problems there. I pulled #4, and as that plug came out oil splattered everywhere across the valve cover... The plug was literally dripping. Looking down the plug well, it was clear that the valve cover gasket was shot and leaking down onto the plug... Great. So I threw new plugs in and made the push for home. About halfway, it started missing again under load in 5th and 6th gear, so I just limped it the rest of the way. Oh, and never drive a car with bald summers in the snow. Ever. The last 15 miles were the most grueling 15 miles I've ever spent behind the wheel of a car, it was that bad. And that's my story. Why is February important? Nice pics! It's a good thing you know what you're doing. I would have been seriously anxious and pissed if I were to discover an engine misfire soon after purchasing the car. |

Because it's usually too cold to drive it with the top down, I'd imagine. |

Thanks! I was getting codes for more than just cylinder 4, so I assumed old or poorly gapped plugs and rolled with it until I felt I couldn't anymore. It seemed like revving it out was making it worse, so the leak was likely not too bad to begin with but in having a bit of fun with the car it progressively got worse. I mean, you have to admit, 1700 miles is PLENTY for a small leak to turn into a big leak. I also compiled a list of probably around 10 items that need addressing or at least looking into on the car, but even so, my buddy still got the deal of the century on this thing.
That. |

Been a while since I've bumped this, as I don't spend much time behind the lens anymore, but I got out to enjoy the fall colors with the https://www.facebook.com/MattDeReusRacing Street Modified E46 M3 today. I said I'd bump it, so I'm bumping it. Bunch of random shots in the order they were taken. The Treg. I'm gonna miss this thing, but it needed to go to make room for what I really need; a pickup. I don't think I ever officially posted the shots of the current livery on the car: Image size reduced, original size: 1024 x 683. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/976/41965434781_b48df8bf46_b.jpg to view the image in its original dimension.
