So I've got something of a dilemma right now. See, back in February some fucking asshole slashed one of the tires on my car and ruined it. I put a placeholder tire on and it's getting me around, but having unmatched tires means that I can't rotate them like they really need to be (shittiest part was I had JUST rotated the tires and the slashed tire was one of the fresh ones). So I figured, I'll wait until I have dosh then replace the slashed tire. No big.

...Except apparently it's very big. Falken is no longer producing the ZE912 at all, so I cannot get a replacement. I was gonna buy two anyway, but now I can buy a total of zero. As such I'm looking at having to buy a full set of four to replace what's on the car (super shitty since there's still some good life left), and need some help deciding.

Falken's replacement for the ZE912 is the ZE950. I could just get that as a direct replacement, but it appears finding ZE950s in my size is an exercise in frustration. Falken does list them as being produced on their website, but I can't find any retailers actually stocking them nearby. So with Falken pretty much out, it's time to look elsewhere. Here are some of the options I now have:

195/50/15 Tires

Anybody have experience with any of these? Any help is appreciated!

Keep in mind that I'm in California, so snow is not a concern. Rain is occasional and the ZE912s did great. I imagine the 950s would be similar if I could get them.

So I'm really looking at summer tires, or really nice UHPA/Ss.

I've heard about the Potenzas before. They're pretty expensive, but I've certainly heard that name flung around.

Silly question good sir, intend to do much carving on these tires, or are they pretty much just expected to get you from a to b?

Sorry to hear about your tire being slashed. I'm been doing alittle shopping around for new tires for the summer. I have no experience with Falken's however.

My top choice as far as summer: Dunlop Direzza DZ102. (Reasonably priced on Tirerack.)

Well, I got a shock when the local tire shop said they could get ZE912s in. I told them to set me up for two and call it a day. They were even willing to pro-rate my existing set so that was baller as hell.

...Well, then they called back and said I was right, they can't get 912s, so I'm gonna go for a set of 4 Yokohama S-Drives. Been looking around (especially among Miata folks) and in terms of price they seem to be a great tire. If I could afford the Potenzas I would go that route but they're a tad pricey so I gotta look a notch lower.

They're special order though, so it'll be a bit before I'm riding on new shoes.

What car are they going on, and how aggressive of a tire did you want?

I'm surprised they make ZII Star Specs in that size. Too bad they don't have ZIIs (non-Star Spec) available (assuming that the link you provided lists everything they have available), since those are on closeout and are being sold for cheaper.

The car is a '93 Mercury Capri XR2. Tire size, as mentioned in first post, is 195/50/15. And yes, the link lists everything available from that particular company. The Falken 950 is available from American Tire but the entire Falken lineup is curiously missing from TireRack.

I wanted a tire that was not super expensive, and had good summer performance. Being in Cali the worst I have to worry about is rain, so I don't need the 950's improved snow handling characteristics.

Here's the selection for America's Tire.

EDIT: Weird, the AT link doesn't list everything they can get their hands on. For instance, I've seen the RE-11s and 950s listed before. Weird.

New tires are on! Can't really review them properly since break-in is 500 miles, so maybe by the end of April I'll know for sure how good they are. For now, having four matching tires with new tread inflated properly does make the car track a little straighter, so at least I have no complaints as of yet.

I also have a fifth wheel being shipped to me that should be here on Friday, which the tire shop will mount the brand-new tire I bought down in SoCal to in order to give me a full-size spare. In case I ever need to swap to a spare again, at least I'd be able to drive at normal speed and not drag the nose of the car around. rolleyes.gif

Now that the tire situation is mostly squared away, it's time to tackle my next niggle...curing the engine of its oil spray issue once and for all! It's time to turn this dirty, smoky engine bay into something clean and burning-smell-free!

Nah, just my boost pressure source line. awesome.gif

Car's super dead right now, Ford is trying to fix it. Long story, but basically a certain company is owing me upwards of $4000 for breaking my car when I paid them $2000 to fix it in the first place.

Wow, that's a nightmare.

I'm not familiar with the resale value of Capri's, but I'd think that $4k is pretty close to the value of the car. Is it dead, dead?

The steering rack is shot. I originally paid $1700 to have the rack and axles replaced. 10 miles later the power steering pump seized. The company denied that it was their fault and made me pay $300 to replace it.

The pump seized again less than two weeks later. This time I took it to Ford, who replaced it for $800. Upon receipt of the vehicle the rack had failed again.

So two dead power steering pumps and two new racks. Yet company #1 flatly denies responsibility.

Wow, that's terrible. I wouldn't want to work with company #1 again.

A couple years ago, the catalytic converter on my Civic rusted and fell off while I was driving home. I took it into a franchise shop, who replaced it for half the price that the dealership quoted me. Nine months later, a crack developed in the new cat. I brought it back to the shop, who replaced it for free despite it being beyond their six month warranty. That's why I keep going back. That's how company's should treat their customers.

Now that's service. Once I have all the paperwork and parts back from Ford I'll be bringing the new information to their corporate office (basically that I expect not only a full $2000 refund but also a reimbursement for Ford to do the work I paid them to do in the first place). If that fails, then I'll sue their asses in civil court.

Oh man. You just had problems with "A SHOP" too?

We took in for a brake job, and afterwards, and not before, the steering was a bit off. Turned out to be the rack and pinion. Which they claimed they recommended ahead of time to be replaced. Nowhere was that documented. After a call to their corporate, they "realized they had made an error" and everything was taken care of.

And then they wanted to charge us for power steering fluid. Fun fact, the Sentra has electrical power steering.

Holy shit that's hilarious. The last bit is especially frustrating. I have a similar story to that but mine didn't involve me being asked to pay for anything after the service. It's just what happened every single time I'd bring my old '90 Legacy in for oil changes.

"Well Subaru recommends replacing your rear differential fluid..."
"Great! You find a rear differential under there and you can go right ahead and replace the fluid."

Eventually they figured it out. Not all Subarus are AWD, durr. laugh2.gif
