Drifters and the Monaro VXR Drifting is becoming an increasingly popular way to spend a weekend. Basically, it involves trying as hard as you can to prevent a car from going in a straight line. Instead, drifters prefer going sideways for as long as possible. It's a pastime that's getting more popular with every passing corner. The skills involved have even managed to make their way into computer games like 'The Need for Speed Underground' and even these simulated drifts are hard to master. So this week, for a laugh, Richard set about proving how great the Vauxhall Monaro is by getting a drifting lesson in one. The chaps from D1GP provided the instruction and then, when Hammond had proved once again that he is a driving god, D1 showed us how it was supposed to be done. And into the bargain, the Monaro proved to us what a staggeringly-great car it is. On our track, pretty much anyone could get it to go sideways and look good. With Vauxhall reducing the prices recently it's becoming even more tempting to rush out and buy one. But if you're tempted, you'd better get on with it quickly, because Vauxhall have recently announced that it's going to stop selling them in 2006. Mixing it up DJ May style Many people don't know that James actually has a degree in music. Which came in handy when Jeremy decided that a good percentage of modern music is rubbish, particularly some of the dross he encountered when co-hosting Top of the Pops. He also thought that listening to the sound of an engine would be preferable to some songs in the hit parade. Which gave him an idea, why not try and reproduce the Top Gear theme tune with car sounds? Of course, Jeremy has exactly the same amount of musical talent as a dead walrus so the actual job of putting the composition together went to James. All day he recorded, tweaked and revved until he had built up quite a collection of sounds. Then, he took his score and DAT tape to a recording studio where two pros helped him make it into some real music. The result was, well, interesting. Although not perfect, it was certainly identifiable as the Top Gear theme tune, apart from a very odd farting sound halfway through which we are fairly certain wasn't in the original composition. Ford F150 lightning So, what IS the world's best selling car? Well, the title gives the game away a bit, but still, we think you will agree, it's a bit of a surprise to find out that it's a car you may well never have heard of. But it's also a surprise that the world's favourite car is a Ford. And that it's a pick-up truck. But what is truly the biggest surprise of all, is that the world's best-selling car is pretty hopeless. Although we do accept that the F150 isn't really made for the UK it's also suffering from a rather large dose of "American build quality". So, basically, the inside looks like it's fashioned out of old melted boots, and none of the trim fits properly. The 380bhp engine is the same as the one you get in the Ford GT. Which means it can propel you to 60mph in 5.8 seconds. Which, let's face it, is remarkable. What is slightly worrying is that for a car with that much power, it seems a little badly made. So, it's entirely possible that while you are whooping and hollering about how fast your truck can go, you won't have noticed that the steering wheel has come off in your hands and that you are, in fact, heading for a ravine. Hammond vs the bull The Spanish have a tradition; every so often, they release a few bulls into a crowded street, and let anyone who's stupid enough to get in the way, work out how not to get a horn in the bum. So we sent Hammond along to see if he could avoid getting to know a bull intimately. Don't worry though, we gave him a rolled-up newspaper to defend himself. Fortunately, Richard did manage to escape, despite the efforts of one local. So would he feel as excited by a Lamborghini as he was by being chased down a street by a huge hunk of meat? Well, put simply, yes he was. The Murcielago is as sports cars should be. A thrill a minute. The power, the noise and the adrenalin are all there. And what's also a relief is that the Lamborghini of today is infinitely more driveable than its ancestors. These days, the convertible even has an emergency roof in case it rains. Celebrity lap Timothy Spall was this week's special guest. The actor, who has starred in over 60 feature-length productions, stopped by to tell us how all his favourite cars break and the ones he can't stand seem to go on forever. He also had a crack at our track and got a very good lap time of 1.51.1. Driving song You voted in huge numbers for your favourite driving song. There were moments when we all thought that buffoon Meatloaf was going to get the accolade. Fortunately, that didn't happen. So who was the winner we hear you scream in frustration. Take one last look at the driving song page to find out. This post has been edited by am3pkcet on Aug 7 2005, 09:03 PM |

Actually saying "I made a stupid comment" would be admitting I made a stupid comment. In reality I'm just bashing you because you don't seem the first thing about Top Gear.

yeah. you should watch like.... any other segment from any other episode of any season. you'd be more likely to rescind that statement. neither richard or james are superb racing or drifting drivers, but both are well above average and have more automotive knowledge and experience than you will probably ever have. jeremy knows what he's doing (for the most part) and can powerslide/drift all day on pretty much any surface in any car. though he enjoyed sliding around in the new ferrari F430 best, he says the evo VIII is the easiest to control because of all its electronic AWD trickery. of course though, when it comes to british tv show hosts and driving skills, i would rank tiff needell at the peak. he was a former forumula 1 driver and top gear host, among other things, and is "known for his almost legendary powerslides, which last very long and are controlled." not like that's all that important anyway. *edit: remember, drifting is everything! everything else doesnt matter. If you have ever watched an episode, the track is wet a lot because of the rain. Also, alll Richard, Jeremy and James are great drivers. You don't become the host of a show with about 200million views if you aren't skilled at your job (in this case, driving and general automotive knowledge). Why do people ALWAYS make stupid comments about non-Japanese people trying to drive?
