Wow, On The Unbeaten Path has gotten long. Unmanageably long.

I've devised a solution - since there are many differences between the pre-"reset" world and the original story spans across 25 chapters, now is the perfect time to lay everything out in a logical fashion and give the reader a bird's eye view of everything that has occurred between then and now. Details are as follows - if you haven't read the prior fics, feel free to skip the spoilered out parts and read this as-is. All you need to know are some people are now in an alternate universe and are currently getting adjusted to the new setting.
SPOILER
Prologue

The year is 1996. The date is November 24th.

Takumi Fujiwara, the famous Legendary driver of Akina's AE86 Tofu Delivery GT-S had just left St. Jude's Takasaki East hospital, only to discover the 4A-GE engine on his Trueno had given up the ghost. Still in shock and unable to even think, Bunta showed up only minutes later to take him and his car home.

Natsuki Mogi had been stabilized only moments prior in the aftermath of a horrible car-accident. Unknown to everyone but Ryousuke Takahashi and the celestial elf who performed the revival, Natsuki had actually died in the emergency room and it was Karie Sandars who brought her back to life - almost killing Karie in the process thanks to a heavy use of time-hopping among other spells.

Karie and Ryousuke were now alone in Mogi's room with her, and Ryousuke finally removed his surgical mask. "It's amazing Takumi didn't recognize me at all..." Ryousuke said.

"I think he was too concerned with Mogi to pay half a bit of attention to anyone else in the hospital. It's a good thing we got here when we did." Karie sighed. "Still sucked me just about dry, though. Between that and all of the time hopping, I'll be recovering for weeks. Kealan is barely in better shape than me."

"Speaking of time hopping, I noticed a lot of the equipment was the same antiquated stuff I had originally worked with in med school. It's not just a budget cut, is it?"

"No," Karie asserted. "It's 1996. And, uh - I could only peek around a little, but let's just say that the world is a less contaminated place, at least as far as radiation is concerned, and Japan isn't anything like you've ever seen before."

Ryousuke stared at Karie, confused at what she was getting at. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, from what I've gathered so far, Hiroshima was never bombed and cars drive on the right side of the road - like pretty much every place that's not a British territory.

Ryousuke felt a wave of frustration washing over him. "Are you kidding me? How is this possible?"

Karie maintained a serious look on her face as she reiterated what she told him earlier; "Like I said - things are a lot different. Every version of 'reality' always turns out a bit differently. This was the first opportunity that I saw where Kealan and myself can actually stop this force. I'm sorry that it's going to have a significant impact on how you race, but this is the best I can do..."

"How did Mogi end up here anyway?"

"From what I understand - in your original world, she had a sugar daddy and Takumi caught her cheating with him. If I recall correctly, that was the night he went to Akagi and blew his engine. Natsuki never saw Takumi. In this world, she saw him and tried to explain herself, but Takumi drove off before she could. She wandered the streets, and got hit by a truck."

"How do you know this?"

"When someone's in a deep coma - which Natsuki is right now, it's a bit easier to peer into their soul.."

Hm, so a reboot eh? Well I don't know if I'll read this one intensively, given my opinions of the fic's characters, but it's good to see a fic reborn in a way.

Also, did you create those drawings? Freaking awesome regardless.

You won't see any supernatural shit in this one until the very end of the fanfiction, I promise.

*whine* I just noticed I didn't draw Ryosuke's shoulders broad enough! >_< ugh ugh ughhh

I like this, though. It's like a prologue to a new book of the series. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I'm actually glad my work came out this good, and compliments the story very well. biggrin.gif I hope you continue to write this month, I would be glad to illustrate future chapters.

The prologue certainly sets up some nice build up...and despite being a bit of a fanfic, I am still quite intrigued by this...keep up the good work, dude. =)

Well, here we go again. Time to see how things turn out this time.

Nice little prologue to start things off with, and it certainly helped clear up some of the details of the later On The Unbeaten Path chapters too (though I still wonder how in the hell an 86 with 150 PS tops can have enough torque to hold drifts on the highway at speeds near 135 MPH). To be honest, I am a little curious as to how that fic would've gone if the supernatural and crossover elements hadn't come into it so much and the story had been a little more like those early chapters with the green Starion, but ultimately I still liked reading it how it ended up anyway, and this continuation-of-sorts (of both that fic and Carbon Expressway) certainly maintains my interest. I know I'm likely to enjoy seeing a full chapter of this get posted up, and I get the feeling I'll likely find this fic a nice read all the way through as well in the end.
So keep it coming and stuff. Both this story and Heikou Sen and whatever other thing you do or do not end up working on alongside those. Always good to see you writing, and unsurprisingly enough, your writing skill is still in good condition. Hope to see an update soon.

It ain't much, but it's something.

Chapter 1 – Erase and Rewind

November 27th... 7:30 AM – New West Tokyo

Davey Anderson let out a small yawn as the morning sun lit up his face, happy to have survived an entire day without any major incident. He tried to compile his thoughts of the day that just passed as best he could, but to no luck. Yesterday was so painfully uneventful that he couldn't remember any particular details. He knew that he woke up, either his roomate or himself made breakfast, they watched TV together in awkward silence, at some point he grabbed a few beers and got a nice light buzz going on, there was a shower or something along the lines of personal hygiene involved and some solid binge-watching of action packed popcorn flicks on the television. But this was boring, he thought to himself. So incredibly monotonous.

Davey glanced over to the other side of his bed, seeing Mitsune in a comatose-like sleep. She was snoring quite loudly - and drooling. For a hitgirl, she sure didn't sleep with one eye open. Did she have a job in this world? He checked the night stand next to the bed, a chore list written for her - in definitely not-his handwriting, under "Thanksgiving Thursday". In his handwriting, 'Paid Time Off... Time to get drunk!' was written. Jesus, I work a corporate job that has stuff like that... no wonder I would write something like that, he thought to himself. Which job is it, anyway? Davey walked over to the bedroom closet and opened the door, peering into well-defined his-and-her-sides. On the right was a bunch of black clothing, all casual, such as skirts, cargo jeans, shoes.... It was more evident than ever how much of an infatuation his roomate had with black. Even the socks in the small basket next to her shoes were black.

On the left side, there was a random assortment of sneakers and jeans, along with some black dress shoes, black semi-formal dress pants and red polo shirts tucked to the far side, all in order. These must be my uniforms... He examined the shirts more closely, and his name was stitched into them, below a logo that said 'Speed Boys'... An auto parts store? Christ. At least I can get cheap parts, I hope. Davey's throught process was interrupted by the sound of the telephone ringing. He walked over and unhooked the receiver, wondering who the hell would call at this ungodly hour. It was barely past the asscrack of dawn and he hadn't even had himself some breakfast yet.

"Uh, hello?" He asked, wtih a slightly annoyed undertone in his voice.

"Davey, it's R. Happy Thanksgiving. Do you have any plans for today?" Whoever was on the other end of the line was wide awake.

"Uh, no... none in particular. My workplace is closed today." Davey wiped the sleepies out of his eyes before stifiling another yawn.

"All businesses are closed today except for convenience stores and gas stations. Provincial law. No non-essential business can operate between 10PM Thanksgiving Eve and 6:59AM Black Friday. Found that out the hard way earlier. Anyway, can you come out to Akagi?"

Davey's eyebrows raised at the mention of Akagi. "Akagi!? Like, the out in Gunma? Dude, you realize I'm in Tokyo, right? I'm like 60 miles away."

"Yerrrrwah.... what's this about Akagi?" Mitsune's curiousity was piqued enough to at least being her into a semi-conscious state. "Isn't that like 60 miles away?"

Davey covered the microphone end, glancing over to his roomate. "I just got done saying that, Mitsune. Anyway, I'm trying to find out and this damn phone doesn't have a speaker so let me finish up with this 'Mr. R' person here and I'll bring you up to speed." Davey uncovered the phone. "Sorry about that - but what do you need me for out there?"

The voice on the other end chuckled softly. "We need an outsider to come to our home course and defeat another outsider. My brother says that with Akina's Corolla GT-S out of commission, the only driver worth his salt outside of the Redsuns is you. I do understand you normally work for money, but perhaps enhancing your car will suffice? We'll need an uphill vehicle as well as a downhill vehicle."

Davey began to grin widely. "Now, I would just be a Thanksgiving turkey if I said I can't help you, wouldn't I? I need some excitement in my life. Consider me in."

"Get here as quickly as possible. I'll be out on the mountain verifying the course's condition in an hour and a half or so. It's a white RX-7 Infini.... er, I mean Turbo II."

"Will do. I'll roll out in 15 and meet you at the pass. Later."

"Later." Davey hung up the phone and turned to Mitsune, his eyes bright with eagerness. "So, you like driving fast - right?"

Mitsune laughed, her eyes lighting up with delight. “I love a good car chase,” she mused.

Less than 30 minutes later, the two walked out of their apartment building, sets of GM car keys in their hands. Davey saddled into what was unmistakably identifiable as a brand new Corvette, deep blue paint broken apart down the car's center line with a white stripe and two red markings on the driver's side fender, with Grand Sport emblems written on the fender. As he turned the key of his LT4-powered ride, he heard the bark of a free-flowing aftermarket exhaust signifying the overhead valve V8 coming alive.

Mitsune Rage fired up her own vehicle, but the exhaust was more muted and mellow. It was a bit ridiculous looking for a “competitive” car – just a black mini pickup truck, with not much more ground clearance than the Corvette thanks to some time of lowering or suspension work. The only standout elements of it were the splitter up front and a massive wing in the back. The black truck, labeled with “S10 Sonoma” and “GMC” badges in the typical manufacturer locations looked like nothing more than a body kit queen, except for one detail bolted to the back bumper.

As the two pulled onto the National Highway system, heading towards Gunma, her truck's license plate was the only hint that there was more to her pickup truck than just a lot of fiberglass and some cut coil springs.

Sweet, nice way to start things off. If that was me on Thanksgiving, I would've chugged my cat at the phone and slept in till 1PM. We gotta get you and Hannah a light novel deal with Kodansha US. biggrin.gif

As always, about time. The quality of the prose alone always makes your chapters worth the wait nevertheless. There's plenty of detail as usual - simultaneously describing both the setting and helping to add to the characters and happenings with ease - and it still all flows by smoothly. We're off to a relatively slow start with this new chapter, but there's definitely strong evidence that things won't be a chore to read, and reading this chapter was definitely no chore either. As repetitive as this might sound from me by now: great job yet again.

So what does this R person who is definitely not an R. T. person have to discuss with our two USDM drivers here? I know I'm certainly interested. In the spirit of how things were here in the old days, I say moar plz.

Heh heh heh... it's funny that you say "USDM"... leave a reply, I might be able to bang out another one tonight.
