www.perkinsrally.tumblr.com

So I've been talking for a while about getting into SCCA Rallycross and recently made a few posts about my first race, so I figure it's time I take everything and place it in this neat and tidy thread!

I had been talking to this kid in my town for a long time, and anyone who saw my "Small World Gets Smaller" thread knows how the Saab I always saw him driving was the very same one my father used to own, the one I learned standard in back when I was 12 or 13.

So I picked up an '88 Nissan Sentra from the auction for under $400, but I had some cooling system work I need to do before I can drive it at an event. So the Versa got rallycross duty last weekend.

Despite being my first SCCA Rallycross event, and not going nuts with my fairly new daily driver, I managed to finish all seven heats and placed 2nd in my class, Stock FWD. I also helped run tech inspections before the event, and we had to go through roughly 50 cars.

I had an absolute blast, met some awesome people and made a "very impressive" entry into the SCCA Rallycross world, from what I was told by a bunch of people at the event. I finished 2nd in the stock FWD class, and after three heats I was something like 19th out of the 52 competitors at the event. I was even matching (and/or beating) a few Subaru WRX drivers in my Versa!

YOUTUBE ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QahN7SagMUU )

Incar video! *Edit: Music is there because all you can hear in the base audio is the camera mount rattling about.

On my way to a 2nd place finish in the stock FWD class!

So the next event is on Sunday, February 27th and I'm hoping to have this ready to go by then:

I picked up this '88 Nissan Sentra at auction for under $400. It runs and drives awesome, but I would later find out that the previous owner did not keep up on coolant flushes. I assume that the coolant went to ****, and then the coolant in the radiator lost its' freeze protection and busted the radiator. The coolant circulates just fine but it's in terrible condition and leaks out the bottom of the radiator. So I'm just redoing the entire cooling system next week.

Going to flush the system out to REPLACE THE PISTON RINGS YOU FRIEDDD get all the gunk out of the block. Then I am replacing the radiator, water pump, thermostat and radiator hoses to the tune of $170 for all brand new parts. Not bad!

Man, I love that bumper sticker. Assuming I get a phone call about a cl ad I replied to, my Saab project is going to get much more interesting and about 60 additional horsepower. Looks like a sweet car, what are you going to do for tires?

I'm just going to get the car inspected, then put some General Altimax Arctics on the front and call it a day. Those tires are what I have on the Versa and they're awesome.gif

Ah, so american rallycross is like our offroad motorkhana. Was wondering why you were going to subject your DD to rallycross! tongue.gif

Nice results. It goes to show (yet again), that a car like the wrx still can't make up for ham-fistedness. Pummelling opponents in what is perceived to be an inferior car is always hilarity. smile.gif

The sentra looks full of win.

Set to work on the Sentra today and got everything done. Heat and everything seems to be working just fine and the car is doing well. I'm going to drive it as it is for the next few days to make sure any bugs get worked out, and then if everything checks out I will be doing tires and other preparations next week!

Corroded water pump is corroded. Oh, people and their not-maintaining-their-cars...

Hey, if the bearings are still good...

Hideous corrosion though. I think my 6 is going to need a new radiator sooner rather than later due to who knows what kind of deposits.

100 miles and so far so good! Putting the car through its' paces and I'm starting to get pretty confident that I made a good buy. One more day of wheel time tomorrow and then getting the Altimax Arctics for the front!

Bubs, it looks like the Sentra is up and running nice. I can't wait to see some SCCA action from it.

Productive night tonight! Got the rear brakes adjusted so the turn assist lever works more effectively, and I got the Arctics mounted and balanced.

I also diagnosed a rough idle to be a stuck EGR valve.

Only things keeping this car from being race ready are switching my camera mount over to the Sentra and putting my number on it! I'm going to go register it on Friday.

I drove it all over the place during the big snowstorm we had yesterday and it handled the heavy snow perfectly! Tires mounted, numbers placed, camera mounted (borrowed a Flip for this time), car's running good and ready to go for tomorrow!

Nah, the paint's in pretty decent shape as it is. But this guy who is in the SF class with me did this roller-and-masking-tape job on his '88 Isuzu I-Mark that came out pretty good. thumbsup.gif

So the Sentra's a success! I was able to drive it down in the terrible road conditions we had yesterday morning, complete all my runs and drive it home! I was in first place in the Stock FWD class for most of the event, but I had a spin on the third to last run that lost me some precious time. Despite losing almost 20 seconds during this endeavor, I was able to make up so much time on the final two runs that I took another 2nd place finish just eight seconds behind the class winner. I had an absolute blast and can't wait for the next race!

Here's some video I got:

First is my excuse for not getting any good in-car footage this time:
YOUTUBE ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN-yAKnp3wg )

Second is a quick compilation of the last few runs of the day for the Modified AWD, Prepared AWD and some of the 2WD classes.

Looks like TONS of fun. I'm really excited by how well you're doing in your first events. I can't wait to hear about the rest of your season. This is one of my favorite threads right now.

Nice job, Bubs. I can only imagine how challenging it must be to drive in those conditions and do well.

The car was sitting for a week or two because I blew a brake caliper going down the road and that pissed all the fluid out so I lost brakes. Used the parking brake to stop so I could get to the college and park it there. Did the brake calipers today, the car stops again and is ready to go for Saturday's next event, which happens to be right in my town!
