Just starting this page so that people could dump their photos they've taken trackside. I figured we needed one since not all of us are drivers.

I was part of the pit crew for my friend's Acura during the FF battle from Super Street sponsored by General Tire this weekend. We got to watch some FR battle from Import Tuner/Continental Tire and some HPDE as well. Also there was some FRS/86 thing going down too.

Got there in the early morning
This was our car
SPOILER

Some of the other combatants

SPOILER

Some FRS/86 action

SPOILER

Some drag racing later in the day

SPOILER

Some JDM action... and no Floh to admonish us for admiring it. It's a damn shame. I was almost looking forward to it. Oh well. Time to move on with life.

interesting to note- our safety car for this event was a Civic Type R
SPOILER

This R32 showed up. Not quite sure what hood that is. Between the white wheels on black car+ strange vented hood, It's not really my cup of tea but kudos that he showed up at all.
SPOILER

During the course of the day we had our share of fun- our driver, Gary was unaware of the embellishment on the back of his vehicle when I took this

Wind at 10mph my ass; stupid weather report. It was funny how unprepared for this event other people were. Some of their tents had to be tethered to walls with bungee cord and were flying away. Others didn't even have tents or complete tool kits. I know one car owner who had hired a driver where all they did in the early morning was yell at each other because the owner failed to bring proper tools and or properly prep his car. His car also overheated in the 2nd session and was shut down while it was overheated facepalm.gif . It managed to make it out the next 2 sessions but we were amazed it didn't blow up. Among a plethora of other things, we had a tent; sandbags; 2 fully stocked tool kits; an air compressor; wifi; a camera pod; and a grill for hot dogs and burgers cool.gif . I'll leave you with this image of my hair going everywhere from the NOT 10 mph wind. Also I'll try to fix some of these images later. Right now some are saying they're not showing up from errors.

J, please take more pictures. I WANT MORE PICTURES OF YOUR TEAM'S CAR! Or better yet, tell me where this is so I can drive myself there and watch everything in person while working on getting my tan to even out. I have the world's worst famer's tan from my work t-shirts. derp.gif

Some more context. This was at Streets of Willow Test Circuit for the most part. Also I'll see about inviting you next time Lena. You'd have to be ok waking up at around 4am if you wanted to come with us though. Otherwise you'd need to drive out on your own.

Really clean 86 that showed there.

Yay! I can definitely wake up at 4 in the morning to carpool with you or something. Waking up at the crack of dawn is my specialty, getting up before the sun always gives me a rush! PM me with details and I will get something set up. Anyhow, I can see all the pictures that you posted up so far, so I don't really see where the problem is.

Why would anyone flush an S13? Out of all the cars you could do that to, an S13 is one of the worst. Not that any could be good, but still.

Posted by: THE_HONDA_CG2 Jun 25 2012, 01:32 PM
Thank you for fixing that J. What would I do without someone as classy as you? derp.gif

Anyhow, I'm a tour guide so I have to be in uniform while in the sun when I'm at work. Therefore I have a terrible shirt and shorts tan. I've been trying to get rid of it, but alas I can only do do much before getting sunburnt. Did I also mention that I have a very distinctive shoes tan?

it really doesn't.

then again i'm part of the 'stance' movement so take from that what you will.

that particular example is running less camber in the front than a V8 Supercar racer does.

I'm not sure if they are "well known" or not, but they are quite hard to miss. I just remembered those spots when I was driving it. The parking lot and yellow gate are right at the start of the uphill, and the •xŽmŒ©’ƒ‰® building is at the summit.

Both people in the pits next to me were really friendly. I got over 100 runs in since not many people were there (it was a tuesday).

Here's a funny video I shot though, one of the female staff members drives a 180sx, and has her handbrake set up so that it plays the "godfather" theme whenever you yank it laugh2.gif

I've improved a lot even though I've only gone for 3 days now (I went 2 weeks ago too, in addition to my post above. It was really rainy...) I spin rarely, and my angle is pretty good. I'm just kinda slow in my speed, and not very good at taking a proper line yet... I kinda let the car control me...

Here is my first day at a track at Istanbul Park.

Although it was my first trackday, I tried to do my best.

I felt that I needed LOTS of skill development, and my 100hp car was too underpowered for an F1 circuit.

Because it's too fun to give up, and I can't buy a new car, I plan to slowly tune my car, starting from good springs&coilovers, better brake pads, a good seat that has adequate side support and such.

My first track day with my silver Bird on our smallest circuit in Hradec Králové. It was great and it was very cheap. Please note, that these cars are very rare here, in Europe.

All these photos were probably taken during timed laps, because I don't see any other car at the track that time.

In PlechCup (analogy to lemons races) I finished second which was perfect to me. I didn't expect this result. BTW, my buddy with BMW E30 made his timed lap only 0.3s faster (but he didn't comply with PlechCup rules - his car was too expensive laugh2.gif).

I went drifting yesterday for the first time at Fuji Drift Park. It was the first time I ever drifted at a "track", I've only ever drifted in large, open spaces with pylons before (gymkhana courses).
About 80 people were there, here's a pic in one direction:

They split us into 8 groups, divided by skill level. I was surprised when I was put into the 4th group, since I am a noob. Apparently ~30% of the people there were drifting for the first, second, or 3rd time. I guess everyone in Japan aren't already super-skilled drifters, huh? shifty2.gif

Do not many IDW members track their car? Or maybe they just don't want to post here?

Anyways, I've been to a few track days over the past few months.

In November, I took my car to the gymkhana course at Fuji for some drift practice (in a wide, open area):

I installed a new GP Sports front bumper in December.

There was nothing wrong with my old Impul front bumper, I just didn't like the look of it. It will be my spare for if I crash while drifting.
I also installed a Profec boost controller and a Blitz FMIC.

For some reason, there were A LOT of itashas there (from two separate drift teams). They were all good at drifting, too.

Have I ever posted anything anywhere that has shown that I have drifted on the touge? I never have, and I won't. It's simply too dangerous, illegal, and not worth it. I've driven quickly (grip) on the touge a few times a while ago though, but I don't do that anymore. Too many unknowns, too many chances for an incident, and not worth it.

I don't know why you decided to attack me all of a sudden.

It's a great thing to strive for for sure, because it can still be more affordable than you think. There are a few less active members here with what basically amount to a normal car that have plenty of fun on the track. Just set aside some cash for brakes and tires.

And thank you, sir!

Probably THE worst way to get into motorsports, time attack racing. It was my first time on the track, and it was fun and all, but I got plagued with the infamous GC gas tank slosh... Would stall everytime after a long right hander and hairpin left...

Didn't do too bad, was beating a GD WRX in my class. Decided to reset my ECU and was running 12AFR's (This is a whole another story by the way. Accessport decided to take a dump a few days before by spewing smoke out of the usb and OBD2 ports). Called it a day and took it as a great experience. Best of all? First track day with a car that I completely built, and I got to drive her home smile.gif Can't beat that experience!

Will definitely go to another track day, but I'll definitely need to do a STI (or maybe just any GD) gas tank swap and just give'r.

Oh and by the way? If you want to be competitive in time attack, DO NOT RUN 380 treadwear tires. These Ziex's suck some major dick. lol

I kinda miss competing in Redline events, but the last time I did I spent way too much on tires and Roger in his Evo always kicked my arse (and not always by small margins). I don't think the 'ole FC will really be competitive in any class, as much as I'd love running it it's just destined for track days.

Sometimes I get jealous when I hear about all the nice cars that backalleyracer drives. It makes me tempted to hit him up next time I go to Vegas and ask if he can hook a brother up with some discounts because I'm poor as hell.

I never knew you worked at Dream Racing either. Man, I'm friends with some pretty cool people who do pretty amazing things... happy.gif

Yea I don't work at the Fontana track - come to Vegas and see what the cars can do on a better track tongue.gif

and you know for damn sure if you ever wanted to come out here I would hook you up Carol!!

Do you know any of the guys at Fontana? If so, I knew Kevin Madsen from college. He recognized me when I got there and hooked up some extra laps and stuff.

It sucks not having enough disposable income to field a second car.

These Ziex's suck some major dick. lol

I know im way way way way late on this post. way late. But IF you havent addressed this issue..

Might I suggest a fuel surge tank? Very cheap, very easy, and ridiculously effective for fueling.

The lapping days I've done have always been on competition weekends, so it was a pretty easy transition for me, though I really only at this point have HSA (High Speed Autox, or standing start) experience. Making the jump to USCA for this next year is going to be interesting as it'll be my first time running timed hot laps.

I want to get to at least 4 USCA events to try to get into the Vegas Invitational on points standings next year, I want to go to one #GRIDLIFE event, preferably the Track Battle event in September, and I'd like to at least crew a Chumpcar or WRL race as well. Also, MN Time Attack has two events for next year, which are going to be HSA style events. Those are local and should be easy to get to, and of course I'm going to be at both Proving Grounds events again.

So 10 or so events if I can help it, for competition. I'll be doing the usual lapping days at the community college as well for shakedowns.

I'm guessing though that I'll have to cut some of that out, probably #GRIDLIFE and chump if I had to choose.

Posted by: Rudy Nov 27 2014, 04:36 PM
For my local track, he difference between an educational event and just open track day is like $100,making an already prohibitive event nearly unaffordable if I plan on doing it more than 4 times a racing season...

Didn't look like dangerous or reckless driving to me. He stayed on his side of the road and took turns within reasonable speed limits; he was on the brakes for half the video. I've seen minivans take roads like this faster, and that's in a daily commute.

He did the right thing and just wanted to show off a couple corners on a local road, no biggie.

This. For public record, there was a warn given to the post mistakenly but was reversed immediately. No street racing here, no warn.

That said, please don't think any public road is your personal track. I'd like to think you know better, but the implication of your post suggests otherwise.

I tracked a 458 in October 2014, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed the GT3 a lot more.

The 458 is generally regarded as a fairly raw and dialed car, but it somehow doesn't surprise me that the GT3 even better.

Both cars are easy to drive fast, but getting the GT3 to 9/10ths and 10/10ths takes some finesse, but there is a huge difference between there and 8/10ths. You really had to pay attention to your braking to not lose too much grip on the front tires, more so than any other car I've driven before.

If I go to law school, I am making this car a priority when I get out.

Hella nice power slide! grin2.gif

I always thought if you're going fast enough, you don't have to cross your hands over ... just let the steering wheel do its own spinning.

If there's anything I hate more than putting my hands at 3 and 9 o'clock, it's putting them even further up or all-out crossing them over like your vid. I keep mine at 4 and 8.

Granted when I've driven fast & have caused a slide on a turn, it's a slide created by momentum rather than a power slide. That and I don't drive to be fast ~ he who shall be last shall be ... yadda yadda yadda user posted image

That was actually an off-power slide, tires were too cold and when the rear end unloaded and the diff unlocked it allowed the momentum of the rear end to cause it to race the front end through the corner. And that's one of the very rare occasions I've had to cross my arms over on track. Most of the time it's a simple countersteer with the same hand placement, like my almost bad moment in Atlanta last year in this aptly named video. laugh2.gif

That curb really upset the car that lap at the higher speed, it was less upsetting a few mph slower.

And next time I race down in TX I'll let you know. I'm definitely not afraid to let the adrenaline out vocally!

A proper racing instructor will https://youtube.com/watch?v=KwERsRYSQT4&t=38 (I couldn't find the English version of that episode derp.gif) tell you to place your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock for optimum steering control. Anything else and they will want to kick you off of the car & track for being a crazy rookie.

I ... cannot stand to be so tensed-up & driving like I've got a devil poking me while I'm steering. I don't like proper racing posture. tongue.gif So when I need to induce a full wheel lock slide I maintain my hands at 4 and 8 o'clock as usual and flick the wheel to the left, then do extremely minimal countersteer, and adjust the car back into place through throttle control ...

I feel like I'm juggling a baby when I've got my hands at 4 and 8, as opposed to taming a lion when I have them at 3 and 9 or further up. It's smooth, it's elegant, it's delicate, it's fun, it's effortless, and most importantly it's slow. derp.gif

But that's the difference between racing and sliding ~ one's to be fast, the other's to look kewl mang! user posted image

4 and 8 was actually taught for a bit in driver's ed across the nation, god only knows why. The common theme I've heard for the logic behind 10-2 and 8-4 (both of which are equally inadequate for car control) is that at 9-3, your thumbs are hooked around the wheel better, allowing them to be broken when the airbag deploys. This is patently false. As someone who instructs teen car control schools put on by my dealership group in conjunction with the training staff from BIR, I've spent plenty of time un-teaching wheel positions that are not the proper 9 and 3.

I'm afraid I don't have much else to contribute to the discussion, aside from my years of theorizing how to drive due to've never actually owned a sports car, but desperately wanting it like a kid looking through the glass of a candy store. laugh.gif ~ I'm just picky as fsck when it comes to cars.

Driving home from work yesterday I realized that my steering wheel is actually set up to help you 3-9. Sure it has indents at 4-8 for where cruise control would be on a higher-end model, but 3-9 is totally natural and comfortable.

Didn't even notice until I made a conscious effort to do so.

Anyway, this is getting off-topic for this thread, so hopefully very soon I'll have something to contribute. We'll see, it depends on how much work I can get done on the car over the next few weeks. cool.gif

It can be either, but not both. tongue.gif

It's swervy as a solid snake ~ but the steering wheel re-adjusts itself after you powerslide through the corner. True story fear2.gif ...

The extremely minimal countersteer is more like just grip & let go of the wheel at key intervals so as to not have it steer the car into a spin. I need a GoPro & a nice car. user posted image

Posted by: Nomake Wan Apr 9 2017, 08:36 PM
No Xiao. If you're at full lock then you literally cannot have 'extremely minimal countersteer' because you literally have the steering wheel completely to one end or the other because that's what 'full lock' is. derp.gif

As for your comment about the steering wheel, perhaps look at a clock again. 5/7 is where the lower supports on my wheel are, not the gaps. The gaps are at 4/8, and an incredibly natural grip can be had at 3/9 due to the upper supports being below the centerline of the steering wheel.

Posted by: xiao Apr 9 2017, 11:14 PM
Ahh ~ I thought full wheel lock was just that the wheel can't go no-further ... I slightly overlooked the lock part haha! laugh.gif Mea culpa guys derp.gif ~

Its not actually your thumbs, but your arms.
The preferred 4-8 position mounts your arms underneath where the airbag deploys, meaning your face can only travel to the airbag assuming A pillar rigidity is maintained and the steering column angle doesn't change.

3-9, 10-2, allows the airbag to deploy between your arms, like you're hugging it. This doesn't break your arms, but it does allow certain circumstances to happen, in examples; if you maintain your grip on the steering wheel, piling directly into your steering wheel means your performing a sort of high impact seated work-out row to your shoulders. Not good.

If one of your arms lose their grip during or before impact, they have the potential to end up between your head and the airbag, which isnt good. This can potentially happen in an offset frontal accident, as you're introducing a good amount of lateral forces as well; your head moves towards one of your arms, while your arms have a tendency to move upwards, this motion can potentially break your arm, think of it like doing a high speed dab.

Your muscles are naturally going to tense up before an accident, but the laws of motion always win out in the end, placing your arms 4-8 position of the wheel avoids some of the complications involving muscle strain as your arms and shoulders are moving in much more 'natural' range of motion compared to 9-3 or 10-2, basically your arms aren't counter leveraging your chest and torso. Under during impact for 3-9, your tensed muscles are resisting the push of your body piling towards the airbag, while 4-8, there's very little you can do to resist your body moving forward.

The 3-9 is the optimal position for control, but I do understand why 4-8 is taught to everyday drivers.
