The conclusion the people arrived at was that compressing a huge image would be better than shrinking an image. If you blow up the shrunken image to its original size, it starts looking pixelated, whereas if you view the compressed image, you can still tell where all the pixels are. At scale, they both look passable.

Only true if the image isn't the end product and a part of a work flow.
In this case, the shrunken image is the final product: There's no need to scale it back up to a higher resolution.

My image was 127K. Could you get an image, that when blown up to 4k will look as good as mine, under 250K, without doing the exact thing I did (or something along the same lines as my approach)?

Yes. I don't know where you're getting 250k from when the upload limit is 500k. Maybe its a member privilege thing. The default windows WP contains only hues of blue, so its pretty easy to make small.

This one is less than 200KB the uploaded attached one is less than 500KB.

Edit: For accuracy, here's one with the colors from xiaos wall paper. Under 250KB.

Nice. Thanks for humoring me.

Well, the use case for when blowing an image back up is valid would be that you have a background for a website. Visitors to that website may have various different monitors of all kinds of screen resolutions. In order to have a one-size-fits-all background, you would want an image that is small enough to not be chewing up unnecessary bandwidth for small screens while simultaneously detailed enough to not look pixelated on large screens.

I think the 500k limit is a member privilege thing. I'm not privileged. For me, the File Attachments says "Maximum file size: 250k". I actually had an image that was 233k, but that didn't cut it, so I had to compress it further.

I admit you probably know a lot more than me about image processing. I didn't even know that hues of blue are easy to make small. I guess I learned a little something today.

Indeed it would be.

Its not blue, its just that your image contains a majority of ONLY shades of blue. More colors, more gradation, more bits.

Thanks for the clarification. Now that you point it out, it's obvious. Or at least, intuitive.

Haven't posted in this thread for a long while since I used to just have wallpapers on rotation, but now that my new rig is built and I'm keeping a static theme, here's how the main screen looks (I have two others flanking it with the same wallpaper).

Here's my background image. Need to redo this shot, since I took it before the windows were tinted.

Apparently photobucket cut down the image size, but you get the idea. Image size is actually 1650x1080

Two of the wallpapers for my new dual-monitor setup, got 'em set up to rotate every couple hours. It's a bit of bollocking around to get it working in Windows 7, but damn if it's not fun. biggrin.gif

Well, Legend Has It that it's the cover of RTJ3, the newest album by one of the best hip-hop duos in recent years. Muy bueno.

Not bad brotha! ohmy.gif It's a bit refreshing from all of the over-saturation of trap muzak on the radio nowadays ~

I like my rap a big more uptempo & funky like Busta, Gang Starr, or MOP but that shiz sounds gewd tho' bruv grin2.gif
