Alright, so I've been pondering this idea for a few weeks; how could we get a mobile-biased theme set up for the forums? Yes, the low-fi option is nice - except you can't post from your phone, PDA or Playstation Portable through that method.

So what about being able to select a mobile-friendly skin? I'd be happy to cover the costs - Minimalist is a step in the right direction, but the pages need to be assembled less complexly, with fewer images.

You can post replies in the Lo-Fi version, you just can't start topics. As for a mobile version of the forums, I am all for it, but I am afraid it needs to be custom coded because no one made a mobile version for IPB 1.3 unfortunately... and upgrading isn't an option. pinch2.gif

Posted by: Möbius Aug 13 2010, 04:51 AM
Voted truthfully, but I knew it could not happen without custom code.

Perry put the reply option in lofi mostly for me. Thanks again! smile.gif

Is there a way to have the site redirect to the lo-fi version automatically if you are using a smartphone?

For instance, there is this sports network in Canada (the literal equivalent to ESPN) called TSN. When I go to their site tsn.ca it automatically loads a mobile version m.tsn.ca.

That's another awesome idea.

The only problem is, the 'chan' layout of lo-fi is kinda confusing at times.

But I'd take auto-lofi over waiting up to 30+ seconds for pages to properly compile on my 9630 any day of the week.

This would be a good idea. I'm all for it. :3

I voted yes, though I don't have a smartphone addiction. tongue.gif
I use an iPhone a bit, so a mobile site would be cool. It would certainly be the forum!s biggest advancement in a while.

Posted by: Möbius Aug 29 2010, 01:54 PM
One cool feature would be for post to autoedit a not in there saying that the post was from a mobile device, I've seen several different forums have this feature.

Haha, I guess you implemented this just last night, Pear?

He asked me to give it a look, even though I HAVE NO PHONE.

Still liked it. biggrin.gif

Sweet. It looks amazing, I am really impressed.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 22 2010, 03:49 PM
I thought it was still under testing... ^^

Glad to see it's operational... Just one issue I have is the button for logging in and such... not overly obvious that the button gives you that info...

Posted by: Spaz Nov 22 2010, 08:06 PM
Just checked this out, you should have thrown me in on the testing, since I'm always bored at work anyway!

Everything's nice and big at the default size, easy to tap, I love it.

1. With a smartphone or...
2. Select it as a forum skin (named IDW Mobile (Import))

Btw, on a normal computer, it looks good. But, on a smartphone it would look even better!

Guys, this thing is not fully online yet. There are MANY bugs that need to fixed. Please don't flood my inbox with bugs report just yet. For the time being, feel free to use it, it sure beats the Lo-Fi skin because this mobile skin offers many more basic features.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 23 2010, 01:16 PM
I like the fact that it is an optional theme... Great work Perry!

Posted by: Möbius Nov 23 2010, 02:24 PM
First time signing in on autodetect, user settings take preference and it resorts to whatever skin you had selected prior ( Kitty in my case )

Can't think of an easy way to resolve it though.

Posted by: Rudy Nov 23 2010, 02:43 PM
Phucking brilliant, Perry. It's a little -too- simple for a browser, but it will be perfect for a Blackberry. I LOVE IT!

No, I love you. wub.gif

I'm thinking about it. I think I will have to resort to using cookies to save the preferences. We'll see!

Sounds like an idea.

The member skin preference will still be saved in the database, but the cookie will invoke an override on the saved preference and let the auto-detection algorithm take over even though you are logged in. Working on that as we speak...

One suggestion, not sure whether it is valid since it is so easy to switch themes, but some sites that offer a "mobile" version use a different URL.

For instance m.idforums.net.

Maybe that might also be a good idea to implement?

That's more difficult to implement in this forum software. The "skin" isn't actually a separate page. The "webpage" that's being served is identical in all the skins, the skin is the internal style variables being changed, it's not "physical" so to speak.

Ah, I see, it would have been cool if it were implemented, but from the sounds of your earlier posts, the method you are using is just as good... Btw, why the sudden urge to have a "mobile" theme and is it possible to have emoticons and signatures disabled for it? It seems they are but the checkboxes seem to remain checked off...

Signature is only enabled in the objective sense. In the mobile skin, you can not see the signature either way. If you enable it, people can see your signature when they are not using the mobile skin. Same thing for emoticons. Unchecking the boxes doesn't mean you don't see them. I believe emoticons are essential even in mobile skin.

And why the new mobile skin? Because I just got an iPhone 4, mangz!

Cookies saved the day. The mobile skin will now override your saved skin preference when you are logged in on your phone. Should you ever need to use the Full Version on your phone, simply click on the Full Version link at the very bottom. That's when the cookie will invoke the user agent bypass script, thus, treating your phone as a normal browser and your saved preference is then displayed. Now to get some sleep..

Please copy your user agent string you see here (on your blackberry)
http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

Copy and paste it and PM me. Same for your PSP. That's the only way I can extend support to a broader range. Right now, the detection scripts only cover like half of all the smartphones out there.. But it just so happen most people on these forums are covered in this half. biggrin.gif

Simply click on the Full Version link at the very bottom, it'll plant a cookie in your phone and that cookie lets the forums know you know your phone to be treated as a normal browser, thus bypassing the mobile detection.

Yes, most of the codes are re-written to fit the IPB 1.x structure. That includes mobile detection algorithm, the jQuery javascript framework.. etc. Please read my detailed announcement here: https://idforums.net/index.php?showtopic=42322 smile.gif

Feel free to use this thread as the bug report thread for the mobile skin. Thanks, everyone. Hope you enjoy it!
