Also, Demon, you've got this really bad tendency to expect everyone to hand explanations to you in every post. Please, for the love of god, try using Google instead of resorting to making off-putting posts when someone mentions something you've never heard of.

Hate to gang up on Demon Boost, but.. Matt even provided an (near useless) link to his "German overseas filter that will end up imploding (sic.) on it's self". Lols! Givin' everyone the needle!

I personaly never worried about it, about as likely as getting caught in a hail storm. Happpens, but, its unlikely, you can hedge your bets with a premium filter, but that can fail, too.

Forums exist for discussion, yes. And not everyone discusses things in the same manner. Some people use crazy and foreign concepts such as 'sarcasm' and 'humor' in their posts in the midst of serious discussion for mysterious things known only as 'lulz'.

And are you sure it's not the other way around, where you're the one that's too lazy to Google up some answers? It's 2012, dude. You're on the internet already, the answers to everything anyone ever posts here (and more!) are easily available via a couple clicks and keystrokes, which a lot of times makes lengthy explanations on these boards redundant and unnecessary. Sometimes you have to spell things out, yes, but doing so in every single post in every single thread is just a straight waste of time and bandwidth.

And here, he posted a brand-name. That's really hard to Google and research, for sure. So hard I even did it myself.

Let me try and break this down.

.MattW says "Mann-Hummel or bust". I read this post before anyone responded to it and it was pretty obvious he was referring to an oil-filter brand named Mann-Hummel. And I hadn't even heard of the brand before. But anyway. . . .

Anyway, just my suggestions:
.MattW. Post up some info about Mann-Hummel filters. Why you think they're good and so on.

They're the OEM filter for my car, and many other European manufactures.

I'm with this. I didn't recognize the brand either but considering it's a topic about oil filters, it must be an oil filter. So let's break down how difficult it is to figure this out. Keep in mind that I'm using Google Chrome with history-based autocomplete enabled. Here goes.

1. CTRL+T
2. g
3. ENTER
4. "Mann-Hummel"
5. ENTER

Bam. Five steps. Using the stopwatch on my phone, these steps (including lag induced by connection speed and my netbook's sad Atom processor) take approximately 6.7 seconds to complete. Less than ten seconds, just barely over five. It would be faster on a proper desktop instead of a netbook.

Or even faster, now that I think about it, Google Chrome has a right-click option for highlighted terms to search google for that term. Again breaking out the stopwatch, that equates to about 2.8 seconds including speed- and CPU-induced lag.

You can get mad about it all you want, AJ, but it really is 2012. I don't know if you're aware, but the majority of us on the internet don't need to be spoon-fed anymore. The means are out there and take less than ten seconds to exercise. Please try that next time before you complain.

Chipping in my two cents....

When I didn't know any better, I always used Fram filters thinking it was the best thing ever. Not to mention the added no slip grip that comes along with it. Skip a few years later, and then I realize that they are terrible.

I mainly use Purolator ( either kind ) and AC Delco oil filters. I did use a K&N oil filter before on my grandpas Buick but later switched it to Purolator as well.

Me and the fiance are about to give the Eclipse a oil change in about two weeks, and you can bet Purolator is going in her car as well. ( and then comes replacing the lash adjusters, O2 sensor and spark plugs...).

^Sounds like fun, I love breaking loose O2 sensers its superfantastical, just be glad you don't have to manualy adjust valve lash every 20k!

Forget the lifters, It's a Mitsu, you'll get maybe 5k out of them and they'll make noise again. My brand new revised lifters lasted 7k before getting clicky again, and I consider that impressive. Just bleed the ones you've got and call it good if it's really that annoying.

They really don't last that long? I know the ticking it's driving her crazy so I figure if we fix that problem, she wont have to worry about the ticking anymore.

I just found out Mann Hummel does the OEM filters for the Volkswagen Group of cars.

So buying OEM filters all this while can't be that bad....

It's an issue with the lifters themselves, the oil relief ports aren't big enough and they build up gunk inside. The only way to fix it is to either get a set with wider ports (like I did, still didn't fix it completely) or bleed them a couple times a year.

My old ones were LOUD, so don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the new ones, but don't expect silence from them. The new ones were done only due to bearing shaving contamination of the old ones, the motor did sound like new for 40 miles before the bearings went.

Earlier MX-5s have the same issue, but not seemingly to the same extent if the oil is properly changed.
