At all R1 locations in USA, they don't seem to have it online and there isn't really much information on how to get it online. Also, regarding updates, how does one update it? I read somewhere that you could update it by USB but I've never seen the files online. |

And no, the machine have to be updated via online. Not sure where you got that info from. |

Besides, even if that restriction isn't in place, your arcade needs Sega permission to access their ALL.Net service, which requires your arcades to pay a monthly subscription fee and a revenue sharing agreement, meaning they will get a small cut of every game played when a machine is online-enabled, including non-online modes. Sega doesn't allow US arcades to go online likely because the latency is too high with the rest of the main servers, which are located in East Asia. In addition, there's also the time difference which makes it hard to connect to the rest. Recent IDAS have very strict latency requirements, even over here in Asia you will be rejected if your latency is too high. They'll even send a technician there to assess whether your arcade connection is viable and all that. They were apparently considering allowing US to have access at the start of D8 though but it ultimately fell through. Sega isn't above making regional servers (as they have shown in China until D7), but there has to be a big enough base for that and the US IDAS base just isn't large enough for that. Even us other Asian countries that have it only have it because we are geographically close enough to share the Japanese servers. Otherwise, our player bases won't be enough to get our own servers either. This post has been edited by SonicSP on Oct 14 2016, 10:20 PM |

Wow that's very greedy of them. I don't know of any other company that does that with their arcade games. | ||

I am under the impression that it's standard practice in Japan when it comes to online access for arcade machines. It's really not that much different than say paying, a monthly fee to access PlayStation Network and Xbox Live from Sony and Microsoft. But yeah, the "and" sucks. Unfortunately open servers as a trend in video gaming isn't like it used to be even in mainstream gaming. Companies much prefer to use closed propieratary servers. Personally the monthly fee doesn't bother me though the revenue sharing does. The amount they get per game isn't a lot but still it cuts into the margins of the arcade. Maybe it's not so bad in Japan where arcades are still a big thing but outside Japan, it can be a bad sounding deal especially for those of us who have weak currencies.
