Topic.

What if Wataru (4th Stage) and Kyouichi were to race?

Obviously they'd both win on their home course, but what if they were to race on the Alliance's home course, the name of which escapes me, for example?

I believe Wataru would win. He was much more of a challenge for Takumi even before he upgraded his engine.

Well, Kyouichi has that weird tendency to step off the gas when she's startled. If Wataru could exploit this, it wouldn't matter the course, he would definitely win. Not to mention that Wataru has amazing stamina, as shown in his first endurance race with Takumi. If Kyouichi were to lead, that would be when she would lose to Wataru. But, at the same time, Kyouichi drives smoothly and at her best when she follows her own rhythm. It means that the decider of the winner could be decided when she leads, because she will either out drive the 86 or she will get stunned and overtaken when she is still recovering from her turbo lag. I couldn't imagine a situation where Wataru would lose, because he only lost to Takumi the first time when a new lane was opened over the course of the race and he was overtaken. He doesn't have any obvious weak points, because he has them covered due to him driving an 86, which trains the driver. The only thing i can think of is him getting hit from behind while going into a corner and oversteering.

^I think you confused Kyouichi (Evo III driver, male) with Kyouko (FD driver, female).

Also, Kyouko doesn't have a weird tendency to step off the gas when startled. The only reason she let off the throttle is because she had another car nudge her rear bumper. And when someone taps your rear bumper and gets you going sideways, you generally don't have many options besides easing up on the throttle and waiting for the rear wheels to stop sliding.

It'd be about as interesting as a Fifth Stage race.

Not really. Wataru was simply blown away by Takumi's skills when he sped down the hill in the 86 to let Wataru figure out what was wrong with the car, which implied he couldn't corner at that pace. The only reason the race in Shomaru lasted as long as it did was because Takumi was yet to become familiar with the new engine and suspension setup and he didn't know the track so well. If he had prepared for it Project D style, he would've beat the crap out of Wataru by the third or second round at the point where the course changes from uphill to downhill.

As for the topic, I think Wataru would win when going downhill and Kyoichi would win when going uphill

Kyoichi will destroy Wataru. Wataru is a good racer but he loves beating "rich kids in modern cars" watch second stage and you will see. On the other hand, kyoichi is a logical fighter plus his 350hp engine will kick dirt at wataru's levin any given day

Your time period is off. Wataru with the original engine and the dog shit turbo would get annihilated by Kyoichi. I'm (and the topic is) talking about supercharged Wataru vs Kyoichi. Same car that could hold a decent uphill race against Keisuke's far more powerful FD. Kyoichi's gigantic weakness would also be in play on a course like Shomaru, especially with the horrid amount of disrepair on the course. Wataru would have the home course advantage as well.

That paragraph was in response to - 'He was much more of a challenge for Takumi even before he upgraded his engine.' To that I had replied the only reason the Shomaru race was that long because Takumi was unfamiliar with both his new engine and and the course, and Wataru wasn't really better than Takumi at racing. It was not in reply to the topic.

And even after Wataru supercharged the engine, he wouldn't keep up with Keisuke on the uphill at Maze if not for the rain. Keisuke mentioned during the race he was unable to use the FD's full power while Wataru had 'power which was easy to use' (He's probably referring to how turbo lag makes it difficult to step on the throttle in the rain).

So, if Wataru had to race against Kyoichi at Sadamine or Maze (Saitama Alliance's home courses), Kyoichi would easily win the uphill on both because of higher traction and his misfiring system. His skills are very similar to Ryosuke, so he wouldn't lose on terms of driving technique. However, on the downhill he would probably lose because he'd wear out his tires faster if both of them pushed at the same pace.

Downhill Wataru would probably win, yes. Unless Kyoichi knew the course extremely well, he'd end up hesitating on every right turn. He also doesn't take risks, while Wataru wouldn't hesitate to do so.

This match up would be an interesting one, especially since both have weaknesses (right hand turns/doesn't take risks, I think for Kyoichi, and stamina/long term concentration for Wataru). I think it would depend on the course, most likely it would be as Tessou mentions in the post above - Wataru would win the downhill, Kyoichi the uphill.
