I own a 1993 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L I-6. Around 6 months ago, me and a friend, along with his dad installed a 4" suspension lift kit. Ever since then, and not all the time either, I've had some sort of resistance when I try to shift into 2nd, 4th, and Reverse. It's hard to explain really. When it's cold, the problem tends to show up more. When it's warm, it shifts just fine, no resistance at all. It's really annoying when I hit a bump and it pops out of 2nd or 4th because of it.

Anyone know what's going on?

Have you popped open the hood and taken a look inside of your engine bay for anything funny looking or out of place?

I'm guessing this was a body lift?

If so, checked to make sure the shift boot isn't interfering with the movement of the gear lever. I kinda figured it would be a linkage issue, but a Google search confirmed it could very well be something that simple. Try flipping the boot 180 degrees, some reported that to be enough, but others had to trim it. You might have to move or trim the console as well for enough clearance.

I'd also check the 4wd linkage as well to make sure that's working properly.

The problem came up after I got a new suspension installed (which gave it a 4" lift as well). I haven't installed the body lift yet, too much rust makes the job far more difficult, I'll have a shop do it for me. As it was, I had to cut a bolt in half because it was impossible to take the bolt off since the suspension that used to be on there was so old and rusted.

I just find it so odd that it works fine at times, and other's it's such a pain. I can't shift smoothly and it just feels and sounds like the rubber that surrounds the shift nob is in the way somehow, but this problem only seems to surface when it's cold.

Edit: @GC2, HA...pop the hood. I'm really out of the loop in terms of auto mechanics, like Takumi. It took me almost a full day to replace a water pump on my Jeep...something that should've taken a couple hours at most. I mean, I just remove the belt, the fan, and the fan shroud....

your not slamming gears or anything right? it does sound like it is a shift mechanism or shift link related. i remember that happen with my mustang old a few times in first gear.

Well when you do a tcase drop you are lowering the rear of the transmission as well as the transfer case, try removing the shift boot and see if the shifter is getting close to or hitting the body.
