In New Zealand in such cases you are required by law to direct the issuing authority as best you can to the person who was driving. I would simply do this, providing any kind of receipts or other proof that the car was with Sarona at the time.

Yeah, that's one way to look at it...

Now, the "ticket" came not from any police department, but the NYC department of finance, and it was listed as a "notice of liability."

Furthermore, the letter states that "the driver of this vehicle, which is registered to you, was observed running a red." Nomake, you're a New Yorker of sorts, does this mean the citation isn't directly tied to my driving record if I were to pay it (and then forward the expense to Sarona to claim my liabity)?

I'm knowledgeable in California traffic law, not so much in NY. I can't really help you there.

I do know that at least in the past, a red light camera ticket was safe to ignore in California due to out-of-jurisdiction laws. Whether this has been corrected or not I don't know, nor do I know if it is a similar issue in NY. You'll have to do your own research, I'm afraid.

Yup, three years ago I got a ticket issued from a red-light camera. It was for "fail to stop completely for right turn on red" The ticket came with the wording "DO NOT CONTACT THE COURT" I searched the wordings online and sure enough, many people had gotten the same ticket and it was safe to ignore. I too am not sure if they have fixed the loophole in recent years...

Perry, for contrast, red-light tickets in New Jersey are issued directly from the court and one of my friends ended up getting arrested for both a bench warrant for his arrest, driving on a suspended license and failure to surrender his license after he ignored the red light ticket, and then ignored the resulting court summons. It turned into a $1,100 headache.

Sounds like you shouldn't ask us Californians, then. It's different here, just as it would be different in Colorado or Florida or anywhere else. Look up the relevant laws to your area and figure out your next plan of action. If that's too daunting, hire a lawyer to do it for you.
