Neon Genesis Evangelion blamed for Murder in Japan
Posted on Tuesday, December 02 @ 07:28:57 CST by kaiser

YAMAGATA -- A boy accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat was influenced by a cartoon that made him believe humans were unnecessary beings, prosecutors told the Yamagata District Court on Monday.

In opening statements at the trial of Hiroyuki Tsuchida, 22, prosecutors claimed that watching the science-fiction cartoon "Neon Genesis Evangelion" had made Tsuchida believe a phrase in it that said, "The ultimate conclusion of (human) evolution is ruin."

(More in extended)

He also came to believe that humans were unnecessary beings who were destroying the world's environment, and in turn began to want to kill people, prosecutors said.

They said the youth fatally smashed his mother in the head with a baseball bat at about 2 p.m. on June 25, thinking that if he killed family members he would not hesitate when murdering others.

A representative of Gainax, the firm involved in writing and producing the cartoon, said it did not think the content of the cartoon was related to the killing. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Dec. 2, 2003)

Posted by: BOZZ Oct 29 2004, 08:49 PM
It's 26 episodes (25 and 26 were redone into a movie with a different story telling) and of course the movie... I think...

Posted by: lance Oct 29 2004, 10:41 PM

EVA is crap... through and through. I own the entire series on VHS and DVD... have seen it almost 12 times through, hoping that I might have missed something, and I didn't. I actually found myself watching Escaflowne rather then this. EVA IS OVERRATED CRAP!!! WATCH SOMETHING ELSE!!! THERE ARE MUCH BETTER ANIME!!!

Posted by: Instant-Noodlez Oct 30 2004, 05:17 AM
2 movies:
Death + Rebirth
End of Evangelion

so probably 20+ eps since the movies take about 2 eps

Death and Rebirth is NOT a move. It is the first 24 eps thown togather in about an hour and a half. Eva is old and don't try to seriously get anything from the story. The directors, just f**kin with ya.

Posted by: Instant-Noodlez Oct 31 2004, 06:27 AM
well to me death + rebirth is called a movie! i guess the makers were bored and decided to recap the important points of each ep...

to me, the storyline shows the philosphy of life... well from the director's point of view. IMO

Even though I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion was pretty good... I liked other GAINAX anime's more than it. ... such as Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water for one smile.gif

Also... i found this page quite cool... it compares Nadia to Evangelion (Nadia was made before Evangelion, and were both produced by the same studio), and even some proof of reused scenes from Nadia in Evangelion XD Also.... HEAVY spoliers if you haven't seen both Nadia and EVA... http://www.thesecretofbluewater.com/nadieva-i.htm

O man, tis anime's quite overrated, especially the mecha. Being a mecha fan myself, this isn't easy to say, but seeing too many fanboys who think that the EVA's AT field & berserk mode makes EVAs invincible really turned me off. Also, what's the deal with Shinji's whiny personality? In general, I expect the ace pilots of the series to be lots tougher than what shinji is.

alot of jap boys can relate to shinji cuz he's the yaoi (weak) type... i agree, i found this anime a lil boring n frustrating, like it doesn't go anywhere... i found macross plus, the patlabor ovas, n rahxephon alot better than eva.

Actually, the EVAs appeared in a japanese strategy game called Super Robot Taisen (if u wanna know more, go to gamefaqs.com), so that technically makes them mecha.

Posted by: prissandthehighwaystar Dec 12 2004, 02:54 PM
After watching the whole EVA series I couldn't sleep well either.

You know, depending on what part of the EVA you're talking about depends on if it's a mecha or not. IMO

As far as Shinji's personality goes, I think that personality is the key to the whole story line, I'm not sure what's up with it, but when I was done with End of Evagelion, I was really scared of Shinji because of his personality.

Has anybody seen Resurrection and Genesis Reborn? They're suppose to be the real eps 25 & 26. (How many times do you need to redo those two eps anyway?) Is it any better then Death and Rebirth?

Nah, they aint human... they just have a human soul. The soul is more for the sync rate, I think.

Posted by: Metamorphic Jan 9 2005, 02:20 PM
Eva's are not human: they are technically decended from Adam ( Eva 1 holds Lilith's legs) giving it flesh and injected with a human soul for character and helping with the syncing process and a metallic external armour for protection and to restrain these beast attributes.

The AT field is only a wall developed from the soul that protects one from the harsh realities of this world and is penetrable.

Beserker mode is when the beast attributes are at a point where it can't be restrained by armour whats the use of it when you can't control it?

OHHHHH, CN's now added Neon Genesis Evangelion to their line-up (Looks like they took Cowboy Bebop and replaced it's slot with this)...They played the first episode on Saturday night...

That's pretty awsome...Still kinda wondering if there was any reason for this (Could be to answer back to G4's airing of RahXephon tongue.gif )...

...although in either case, it's kinda weird watching it with English dubs, especially for my first being time... pinch2.gif

Posted by: Metamorphic Oct 24 2005, 05:23 PM
I like EVA it's extremely dark! EVA1 going beserk is the craziest stuff! The director did a good job in conveying Shinji as a flawed teenager and Asuka as a confident child masking her insecurities

Posted by: Xibal (ER34) Oct 25 2005, 03:15 AM
wat makes eva a good anime is the character develpoment throughout out the series the relationships are sometimes lovable or hateable dats y dis anime had so much appeal along with the religious philosphies

what, asuka?

there is one full length eva hentai movie doing its rounds over the net and its not official if ur counting that to your total.

as for eps, 25/26, yes they were shoddy works that sucked major ass, but AIR/end of eva made up for it. i just dunno why they threw in all those screenshots of the real world though....

I'm gonna set some Evangelion hentai episodes for download before I go to bed...Not so much sexual as they're supposed to be, I usually find hentai to be on some quirky, humerous side...

Something that just makes me go, "What the bloody f**k?", and I can only imagine before-hand what sick, twisted shit an Evangelion hentai would be...

Nothing beats "La Blue Girl" for weird hentai, though... wink2.gif

Nevermind...I finally started getting into Evangelion a few weeks ago, but I just totally suspended my interest in a haitus...I really need to catch myself up... sad.gif

Ahh...good old Eva - one of the most overrated Animes ever. There are just things I don't get about why Eva is considered such a masterpiece (mind you, I think it to be an excellent Anime, but not necessarily in the Top 5):

1) The characters - sure, they all have depth, are very interesting, and have great voice acting (even in English - at least in the Platinum version where Allison Keith plays Misato). But what the hell does that difference make when in the end, they all die? Sure, Evangelion can be classified as an "apocalyptic Anime", but then why build up so much from the beginning?

2) The ending of the story - Yes, most people would say the ending put in the original 26 episodes was horrible (in fact, it was really just very weird and seemingly out of place - it wasn't TERRIBLE). But then, the film "The End of Evangelion" didn't exactly clarify things either - in fact, it was even MORE confusing than the shockingly soft/gentle ending of the TV series. I almost feel as if the director thought the TV ending was lousy because there wasn't enough violence, blood, and religious images.

Anyway - yea, people have already summed up what Eva really is - if you're ever interested, the Platinum Thin-Pack Complete Set is available now on DVD (on http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000767QTA/qid=1135383277/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4562083-7872900?n=507846&s=dvd&v=glance for example), and the two movies are together in a 2-pack (also on http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009S4J5K/qid=1135383277/sr=8-4/ref=pd_bbs_4/102-4562083-7872900?n=507846&s=dvd&v=glance)

Posted by: haspieuw Dec 23 2005, 04:54 PM
for the ending there was a reason if i remember
cuz director didnt get any support or money to make a clear ending
the superior were a bit shocked after the 01 eaten the angel

as for the difference in the end ? try asking the same question for those who have watched Victory Gundam

bwt i am just a NGE newb fan

Who cares if people say it will suck. I just want to see it with what Weta does.

Wonder how the Live-Actions gonna turn out and which part are they gonna focus on more, the action or the psychology or are they just gonna overwhelm you with special effects like what Star Wars III did.

Anywayz just recently finsihed rewatching the entire series, and immas still wondering what Rei is? I mean is there like one original 'human' Rei' and all the others were just clones (dummy plug Rei) or is Rei just lika an artificial off-spring of Yui (Shinji's mum)?

BTW I heard there was an evengelion manga that's set in an alterante universe where Asuka and Shinja are childhood friends and Rei is the new transfer student and they all live normal school lives. Anybody got any idea where i can get a hold of them? I think it's got multiple names some of which are: Evangelion:Girlfriend of steel 2, Evangelion: Angelic Days or Evangelion: Iron Maiden 2...

i think you know this all
the manga contains 5 volumes if i remember
there was a group who translated before it got lincensed

Rei is a bioengineered clone of Yui Ikari. The Reiquarium contains extra copies.

"The title for the new film series is “Evangelion Shin Gekijou Ban”, it will consist of 4 parts with the first part arriving in Japanese theaters in early summer, 2007. Staff include General Supervisor: Hideaki Anno, Director: Tsurumaki Kazuya , Character Design: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Mecha Design: Ikuto Yamashita, Animation Production: Khara (Color) Studio. The scenario of the 1st part will be written by Hideaki Anno with storyboard by Shinji Higuchi. Key points of a supposed interview which may or may not appear in the forthcoming edition of Newtype attributed to Toshimichi Ohtsuki of King Records have also been circulating. According to that information:
-The content is quite different though the time base of the story is the same as the original TV series.
- It will be a remake, however, it is not a re-creation but a “new work”.
- The approach will be different than what Tomino-san did with the Gundam Z New Translation films, there will apparantly be a large amount of new material.
- Even if the TV series has not be seen, the viewer will be able to enjoy it. Though the content becomes easy, it is not redundant to those already familiar with the series.
- The technique that purposely scatters difficult words and phrases will not be used any longer.
- As an antithesis to current animation industry segments. It is an attitude on the production side to pull the act in the age that started from Eva."

That idea has been running around my mind for a manga take to ba animated quite awhile too. I won't say that will ever happen of coarse but any rebuild for the series I'll be there. 4-part supposedly? yay...um yeah whatever...yay.

EVA is still extremely popular especially by the undying cult following so any rebuild or whatever is like something that came out unexpectedly by popular demand perhaps. grin2.gif

Posted by: BOZZ Sep 9 2006, 09:38 AM
Although it would be interesting to see that manga (I take it you're referring to the one which is more love story than mecha story, I just can't remember the name ATM) animated it might just have some concepts incorporated, one rumour has it that Rei Ayanami might be more animated (as depicted in the recent Newtype with her and Kaworu on the cover).

One thing to consider is that most of the seiyuu originally involved with the series are now retired, with the exception of Rei's Megumi Hayabishira who apparently is in a constant state of retired-unretired-retired-unretired. One blogger suggested, if they're making Rei more animated, who other than Aya Hirano to take up the voice of Rei... tongue.gif

It all depends on you...the anime is considered a classic and a benchmark of what future animes will become during 1995. So yeah it may or may not be anything new to you but it's still not your typical anime because it's very very very psychological or even controversial because of the very talky but deep thoughts and stuff like that that makes you think hard about.

It's not for everyone but it's become one of those animes that for some reason has become sort of like a requirement to see because it still has a lot of original and very unpredictable scenarios. The quality may seem a bit outdated in terms of anime drawing at first but not really, everything else is never outdated. Many have tried to make an anime more controversial or better than Eva, but almost all of them if not all of them were never successful.

The last episodes and the movie are some of the most violent you'll ever see.

"Tonight we met up with Evangelion Producer Toshimichi Ootsuki in Akihabara. According to Ootsuki-san the “contents” for the “1st part” of the new Rebuild Of Evangelion movies is now complete. The animation staff is also very close to being fully assembled. Building on past hints (the cover image of the October, 2006 issue of Newtype Magazine) Kaworu Nagisa and Rei Ayanami will be central characters in this new story. The theme of the “first part” movie will feature the characters in a school setting prior to the arrival of the angels."

LOL I watched the English version before the Japanese version but have to say this dub was of a VERY high standard! LOL I still prefers Spike's voice to Shinji's original seiyuu and his Cantonese counterpart

^ yea same here i first watched eva dubbed (thanks to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Broadcasting_Service of course) and still prefer it dubbed even to this day. I don't maybe it just grew on me or something, but the dubs for eva were in no way close to bad, infact they were really good imo.

But either dubbed or subbed, I'm really aniticapting this new 4 part Eva movie that should be coming out pretty soon, i think sweatingbullets.gif

Posted by: BOZZ Oct 27 2006, 08:48 PM
Hmmm... I don't think I could ever enjoy the Evangelion English dub considering who voiced Shinji...

Either way I've started watching the series now, never did see it completely before...

Posted by: BlastorBlade Oct 27 2006, 09:13 PM
I always thought that Evangelion's English dub was perhaps the best dub ever done - well, since the Pioneer dubs of the early 90's, at least. The exception of Shinji, of course, and once I heard his Japanese seiyuu, I couldn't watch the dub anymore.

I'm looking forward to the new 4-part OVA or whatever it is. It'll be nice to see what Anno really wanted the series to be, rather than just dragging the viewing public into his personal battle with (and interpretation of) depression.

Posted by: MidnightViper88 Oct 27 2006, 09:45 PM
I actually thought NGE was one of those few occasions where the English dub was actually decent, though Shinji's English voice actor might have been the single crux...

True to that...quite extreme.

As for Victory Gundam...i've heard about it's story (heard about how Tomino felt during that time writing it).

But for End of Evangelion itself is quite shocking during the time I showed it (along with the series) back in like 1997 - 1999 so it really pissed off a lot of my friends new into anime at the time I showed them the series and movie.

Ah yes the popular response by everyone. As usual, look up responses from wikipedia and such or something.

This is what I figured out of watching the last 2 episodes (roughly and made short of saying since I haven't seen the ending for over 5+ years already). This ending has many questions and answers but to simplify it, it's all about your own interpretation. In this case, it's about how the series was interpreted in Shinji's perspective and only his perspective as it will be interpreted by another person's perspective. (I figured BOZZ that you probably got this point already in the series anyway)

You can say that the manga versions (there are quite a few of them, most noticeable is the original manga itself and the angelic one) are their own interpretations. The angelic one (can't remember the full name but it's original name is like Iron Maiden:Girlfriend of Steel part 2 I believe since part I is another interpretation with an additional character) is after all that short clip you saw with the alternate reality in episode 26 (with that happy Rei).

How will the 4 part movie be interpreted in 2007 - 2008 is what an Eva fan wants to know next.

From what I know, the End of Evangelion movie is just another interpretation as creator Hideaki Anno said the real ending should have been the series ending (and is to him still), but most people (like pretty much most of every Eva fan I know) prefer to have the End of Evangelion movie as the cannon ending.

Posted by: awdrifter Nov 8 2006, 09:50 AM
End of Eva is definitely the better ending. If you haven't watched the TV end I woul even recommand you to skip it and watch EoE first, then come back to watch the TV ending. From what I remember, they ran out of budget in the end, so that's why the last 2 eps of the TV ending looks like crap.

QUOTE (awdrifter @ Today at 9:50 AM)

Actually that's part of the story. The budget was cut by the network showing the series after the first viewing of episode 18 and 19 were shown with extreme graphic violence. In fact the series was nearly threatened with cancellation if not by the popularity of the viewers was the show decided to be kept on television.

Hence if you noticed, the quality of the episodes started to become somewhat crap beginning in episodes 20 - 26 little by little. You can tell the lack of budget by the amount of still pauses of single frames. Probably which is why the quality of action sequences with the last 3 angels didn't have as much fighting action as other episodes like episode 19's amount of action sequences had for example.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 8 2006, 10:35 AM

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 8 2006, 09:09 PM
Well I am watching the movie, and it's a lot more enjoyable, only thing is... did Misato imply that she'd have sex with Shinji?

Also...
The last third of the movie is odd, not in a mess with my mind sort of odd, it's just weird... Like the part where Ayanami is straddling Shinji with her hands in his chest in the "World of LCL". Then there is the abrupt ending...

I do wonder if the movie will have a different ending that might be a little bit more light-hearted...

Posted by: Chidoki Nov 8 2006, 11:14 PM
You know what actually you should read the manga right now...a completely different perspective. Well i'll point out a few things you'll find really interesting about the manga.

Yes spoilers...

1) Shinji is no wuss ever in the manga, he is what people call the Shinji he should have been in the anime (however this is also what other EVA fans would call the typical main character as he is portrayed as an angry young boy who has guts to pilot his EVA right at the beginning).
2) There is 17 angels in the anime, there is only 12 angels in the manga
3) The death of the 12th angel (aka Kaworu) has just ended it's chapter this month, yes that's right this month after the manga has been around for nearly 11 - 12 years since it's release in 1995. Which comes to the 4th reason..
4) The manga chapters come out only 1 chapter a month, hence why the manga hasn't ended even after 74+ chapters.
5) The last volume, which would most likely be some like 8 - 10 chapters long is the end that everyone is wondering how it will end. Even I don't know how this ending will be interpreted. And finally the last one is...
6) There is so many surprises that either oppose or contradict the anime to the manga that there is so much more the manga offers that isn't confusing at all. The main one is it lacks the amount of action sequences the anime has, but adds other alternate action sequence perspectives. (For example: The part where the one angel splits into 2 angels against Unit-01 and 02, yes you see those two angels kick the evas butt unlike in the anime which never showed it.) I'd love to tell you the surprises cuz there is a lot of nice surprises...but i'll leave it to that.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 8 2006, 11:19 PM
Well I guess I got a reason to read the manga... Did Anno have anything to do with the manga at all?

This is hilarious: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SI_truth.jpg The truth behind Second Impact... ><

Posted by: Chidoki Nov 8 2006, 11:40 PM
Anno didn't have much involvement with the manga because he and all of GAINAX allowed Yoshiyuki Sadamoto to do his own interpretation of the series. I guess the reason for this is as Anno was trying to state in the last evangelion episodes, the series was suppose to be interpreted in so many endless possibilities. So Sadamoto gave his own version. I'm excited how he will end it...it's a complete mystery to me.

Hmm... Interesting... One question I got though...

Are humans the children of just Lilith, or of both Lilith and Adam? Also why the heck did Adam look like an EVA? What was he doing in Antartica?

Posted by: Chidoki Nov 9 2006, 12:07 AM
Even I forget the confusing answer of that whistling.gif

Well for what i just remember if it makes any sense. Lilith is the 2nd Angel, and everyone thought that Adam, being the 1st angel was the one captured in the bottom. But Kaworu has confirmed this that it's not Adam but Lilith that NERV has always had. In any case, Adam has been long gone. If in terms of whatever way biblical connection of Adam with Eve(or EVA) to Adam with Lilith(or EVA evangelion) whatever it is. Maybe it's because of Eva being the image of god/man perhaps, and the Eva's real image is being the clones of Lilith. Oh whatever, I'd have to ask around. Anno is pulling my strings on the answers to this, I guess he wanted to leave a lot of questions out rather than giving answers. I think I don't make sense unless ya get the picture. And now that I think about it, I'm trying to remember now why was Adam in antarctica as well but it's been so long to remember anyway.

well, actually they never specified why, it just was tongue.gif

and to bozz's question before:

I guess it was because Rei resembled Yui so much, and that he'd never been loved or cared by his mother then Rei was the perfect substitute. Although his interpretation of *motherly love* got lost somewhere along the line........ It explains why one minute, she's straddling him, the next she's cradling him, and THEN you get to see yui saying goodbye. sorta like a really hurried re-boning of shinji's spine to be sent back to the "real world"

just how i see it laugh.gif

i shall try answer that question
its been awhile that i have watched EVA

firstly i think there isnt any sexual interaction from Adam and Lilith to give birth to humans. From what i have heard humans are just 'born' somehow from Lilith.
the second one, its EVA that ressembled Adam, EVAs are built from IIRC the DNA of Adam except for Unit 1 thats from Lilith. About Adam in Anatartica, he was already there when humans found him. i think you know the rest of the story about Adam back to its foetus form

Oh man, if only he was depressed when writing that it might have been able to compete with EVA depression. Talk about bad timing compared to V Gundam.

Posted by: BOZZ Nov 10 2006, 07:51 PM
Now that I've had a bit of time to digest it all, is it weird for me to think that Evangelion (the anime at least) really doesn't seem to be as good as the hype for it makes it out to be?

I did comment that I did watch, and loved, Victory Gundam, which was done while the director was having a huge bout of depression (although I do wonder how much influence he did have on the story since he was only a director for the series and not a writer, or at least credited for it), which might have really de-sensitized me to some bizarre moments in TV shows.

I still don't get where the so-called "mind ****" occurs... I've been told by others who have watched it not to marathon it (I nearly did over the course of 3-4 days) and how the show is messed up, but I didn't really think it was... Sure the bout regarding psychology and such of the characters in the last two episodes and movie were interesting, but they weren't crazy or anything...

Just my thoughts...

LOL Im actually surprised that you werent confused by the story and the mind games!!! When I was watching eva the last few eps had be like baffled a few years later (last year) I got hold of the movies and I was like WTF in the second movie but the first movie's action sequences were good!

But nontheless I was still an eva fan back then was really into it that was until I seriously got into Gundam that I became the Gundam fan I am today

The words "of course" jump to mind. (no offence intended smile.gif ) The series is 10 years old, and there has been literally millions of words dedicated to theorising what the end of the series means, etc. You've had the huge advantage of reading up on what people thought it means before watching it, referring to materials through the series, not to mention your viewing series that have directly or indirectly been influenced by its style and spiritual-psychological spin. Back in the mid-late 1990's, it was all the rage to discuss what meant what, how much the religious metaphors were simply representative or whether they were actually commenting on anglo-christian values, etc, etc. And it was always fun to theorise whether this was actually Anno's intention for the series, or did he do a Fudoka (or rather, did Fudoka do an Anno) and change the series mid-stream to fit in with his then current mental perceptions of the world he inhabited.

I think a lot of the hype comes from the fact that this was one of the first series that really caught the imaginations of both the Japanese and Western viewer alike - some series that are controversial in Japan are nothing in the West, and vice-versa. Eva provoked thought in both areas - for different reasons, mind you - and thusly got the hype. Deserved? In my opinion, yes, for it is still hugely popular and influential.

The "mindf*ck" is different for anybody. I think that de-sensitisation helps...I saw Rahxephon after Eva, and it didn't affect me half as much as I reckon it would have. I think it depends on how much you can associate with the characters, in particular whether you can really relate with one or another. In Japan, many, many people associated with Rei, and so her self-reflection and quest for what was essentially humanity resonated. The "hedgehog's dilemma" and soul-crushing obligations of Shinji reflects strongly in others - his unwilling yet unstoppable fall into a personal hell and the fact that one has to expose themselves to pain to find happiness (and what happens during the journey) before his eventual self discovery can mindf*ck those who can associate. Similar things can be said for most of the characters, particularly Misato and Asuka.

So, if you didn't associate, or you are one of those people who can detach themselves from the story you're being showed, then it probably won't affect you much. In your case Bozz, I think your age (which is mid-20's, if I'm not mistaken) also helps immensely. Most of us who viewed it when it was new were in our teens - the angst really resonated, even to us who were not particularly angsty (like myself). Hell, if I watch my DVDs (or, even better, my SBS-TV tapes from that timeperiod), I'm instantly thrown back into that moment in time. Just seeing and hearing the Star-Child bit at the start is enough! So viewing it now can bring up those memories, but for you, the angst will probably seem a little juvenile.

A general comment about the amount of influence the Victory Gundam director would have had - I would have said huge. Regardless of him writing or not, the final product is his interpretation of what is written. According to Wikipedia, Tomino was under a lot of pressure from outside parties, as well as the aforementioned mental health issues. So if the story says "xx is defeated" then Tomino may interpret this is a death, and perhaps a particularly horrible one at that. At the very minimum, he'd control the overall tone of the show - so if it was very psychotic and provided a "mindf*ck" then Tomino would have had quite a bit of input into that. (Well, you'd think, anyways)

Just wanted to add on the topic of age... Evangelion is 11 years old now, Victory Gundam is 13 years old... yet Victory Gundam had more of a profound effect on me than Evangelion did, go figure...

Not to say I don't like Evangelion, I've become a bit of a fan of Asuka... Oh about her... Why is it that sometimes in some episodes her name is listed (in English text) as being S. Asuka, does that mean Sohryu is her first/middle name?

No idea why it would be S. Asuka in the english text. Sohryu should be her mother's last name.

btw BOZZ, your Asuka pic is actually my fav pic from all of the pics I've seen of her...I just had to add that as part of my anime wallpaper collection heehee.

But yeah about what haspieuw said during the time when Eva was released in North America for the first time, it did have a strong impact into what anime was about, at least to the people new at watching anime. Back then in 1995 - 96, I was still completely green in watching anime as Evangelion was actually my first real anime series I've seen at the time, i was like 15 years old when I watched it the first time so watching something like it was completely new (aside from having seen other animes like Gunbuster, Macross (all of it), Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, and such...Eva was quite a surprise.

The fun part about watching Eva then was showing it to people who were also green into watching anime and watching them get pissed off about how it ended, or confuse them.

Also now that I think about it, Gunbuster had a much bigger impact on me than Evangelion did. Not because Anno did both, but simply also rather that I saw Gunbuster just before I entered highschool in fall '94 and back then I was the only anime geek of my generation. Evangelion didn't have the same impact I had with having watched Gunbuster as a sleeper fav of mine. Plus i was watching Evangelion back then as 2 episodes every two months just like Initial D 4th Stage was like.

Don't get me wrong, I did watch it back in the mid-90s, I just never got around to ever finishing it... heck to this day I have yet to finish the show that got me started with anime, namely Ranma 1/2.

Posted by: BlastorBlade Nov 11 2006, 02:31 AM
Same here, on the Ranma 1/2 comment (it both got me started and I never finished it). Understandable, though, as it starts to get really bad around S4-S5 and apparently doesn't get better until somewhere around S6. Pity, because the first two seasons of Ranma, plus the OVA, were really good.

I always thought Sohryu was Asuka's father's family name, with Langley being her Mother's maiden name. I know people that have their mother's maiden name as their middle name. S. Asuka Langley would then make sense, because it is the direct Japanisation of what we do in English - eg. Chuck Norris becoming Chuck N. Although, now looking it up, it mightn't be that (see attached pic)

Wikipedia seems to suggest the same thing that Sohryu is her mother's maiden name... The reason it confuses me is that she's apparently 3/4s German, and Soryu doesn't sound too German... ><

Posted by: bROCKoLEE Nov 11 2006, 02:44 PM
Well, Asuka doesn't sound too German either, prolly the reason why they changed it to Auska in the dub i reckon...

Posted by: BlastorBlade Nov 11 2006, 06:08 PM
Changed it? In Japanese the "su" becomes a compressed "s" sound, so "Asuka" is "A-ska" rather than "A-su-ka". If you think it sounds like "Au-ska" in the dub, that's probably the Anglicisation of the "a" sound to a flat English elongated a rather than a deliberate attempt to Germanise the name.

True, true... But usually the last name kinda can give you a clue on the person's origins...

"If you haven’t heard about the new Evangelion project before this, basically it’s a total of four new movies, with the first movie coming out next year.

I’ll just listen them out in the order they are mentioned in the magazine.

It’s going to be crazy. Crazy like the Eva that we love and hate. Apparently, Mr. Anno is working full steam. He’s happy that he can finally recreate Eva “as he wanted it to be”, because he’s no longer limited by the technology of 12 years ago, ergo lots of 3D CG this time. In fact, it’s so crazy that you will need to watch the first movie at least 3 times to “get” it. (Or so they say.)

The planning for the first movie has already been completed and it has entered the drawing phase and Mr. Hideaki Anno is working on the script for the second movie. The staff remains more or less the same as the TV series.

The first movie will revolve around the events covered in episode 6 of the TV series, basically Operation Yashima where Eva-01 takes down the angel with a positron rifle. That episode did not turn out the way Mr. Anno wanted it to, due to last-decade technical limitations, and he wants to make it right this time. Operation Yashima will be the climax of the first movie. Mr. Shinji Higuchi, the director of Sinking of Japan, will be in-charge of the Yashima portions of the movie.

NEW characters will be appearing in the second movie. (Please let it be Mana Kirishima!!!)

Although the uniform designs will remain the stay, the NERV and SEELE logos will be changed. The NERV logo will be based on a bitten apple, while the new SEELE logo will be an apple with a serpent coiled around it. The new logos are references to the original sin as told by the Bible. Apparently, this reference may be paralleled by the movies’ story at some point.

It sounds to me that the first movie will be at least a partial remake and the second movie will branch off to a new story with new characters. I guess you can call it a parallel Eva universe?"

Thanks to Evamonkey.com for posting info about this!

meh, i dunno your probably right, but you gotta admit it does sound more Auska, as opposed to Asuka, since there's no 'su' or 'soo', where the 'u' or 'oo' is emphasized like in Naruto and others that i can't think of atm lol =P

Anywayz I'm with Meta on the logo change. I personally reckon the original fig leaf logo was fine the way it is, so this new one is probably gonna take awhile to get use to. But while we're on logos, did Seele even have a logo? Cuz they mentioned that 's gonna get changed that too blink.gif

I must have been dumb not to notice that lmao laugh.gif

Well i'm still interested though in knowing what type of new characters they will introduce in the movies, and if any of the "only game appearances characters" will be there. If anything else I just want to see Kaworu with a bigger role.

And yes, the movies will hopefully finally get to show those Magoroku swords and the double chainsaw, or whatever other weapons that they never shown in action before. Oh yes, and scenes of Eva-04 as well. Please those stuff better be there. It makes me want to stare at my whole Evangelion model kit collection again since the time I bought and built them back in '96 - '98. The 1/60 scale Perfect Grade Eva I built still looks amazing everytime I look at it.

Posted by: BlastorBlade Nov 17 2006, 05:19 AM
I think the "re-interpretation" seems very interesting. I agree with the general sentiment that the change of the NERV and Seele logos isn't a good idea. NERV, in particular, has a very recognisable (and, in my opinion, very cool) logo - changing it, symbolism or not, seems a bit silly.

Changing from canon after Operation Yashima seems like a good idea. It pre-dates Asuka's arrival, so she can have some personality changes if necessary. Plus, the Shinji-Rei and Shinji-Misato relationships may get developed more before her arrival. She did kind of dominate...

Although I don't really want to see it, I also think the Kaworu will be introduced earlier, if for no other reason than to heighten the betrayal of Shinji and perhaps enhance his interaction with Rei-III (and perhaps even meet Rei-II?). The other new characters could be good, depending on their role. I thought Eva had a pretty rounded character-set already.

Personally, I'm hoping that Shinji is redefined into more of a manga-Shinji, where he wasn't quite so sooky. I prefer the quiet internalised rage of manga-Shinji rather than the introspective whinging bullsh*t of anime-Shinji...and I think it makes a better story too.

Ah, the Eva models and toys are still great, aren't they? Eva's 01 and 02 were the first HG models I ever bought, and my Eva-02 action figure is still my coolest. I have it armed with a sword and a pistol...like Chidoki I also hope they pull out some of the more outlandish weapons promised via Gainax's marketing arm. BTW, PG Eva-01 must of set you back a pretty penny back then...I remember pining for one, but couldn't save up the AU$500+ I needed to buy it (not that I have anywhere for a model of that size anyway...)

Posted by: Chidoki Nov 17 2006, 09:46 AM
Oh yeah BlasterBlade, back then I bought the Perfect Grade Eva brand new first arrival at standard rip off price which was like $500 dollars. laugh.gif Well it's different now which you can find Perfect Grades at like an average of $200.

Also I didn't know any better but I use to buy the HG Eva kits (all units yes) for $109 dollars blink.gif . I guess I didn't know any better because there was only 1 store that sold Eva and Gundam kits back then in my area so I didn't have any big specialty stores of anime back then when Eva was still close to being an unknown in North America.

Ah yes those were the days in '96 - '99

Nice! I never got to the level of painting my models...or even putting on the transfers. Unfortunately I'm rather spastic with my hands...I managed to get a friend to paint the little Shinji that came with HG Eva-01, but I never was able to get him to paint Misato and Asuka that came from HG Eva-02. The Sachiel you see is a metal figure I bought somewhere in Sydney. The most fragile thing...the left arm is at a stupid angle because it's actually snapped at the shoulder and only staying of through sheer force of will. Not pictured are two LM Eva's I bought (Eva-00 original, and Eva-03 as Bardiel). I actually tried to paint these...it turned out really, really bad. Now I tend to buy action figures, as I don't need to paint them sweatingbullets.gif

sniff!! Reminds me of my three eva unit models! My cousin bumped my desk and toppled shougoki and the momentum toppled down its red and blue companion and they fell down from the top shelf and alot of the parts shattered!

The plastic build and quality was way inferior to the gundam plastics If the chance ever comes up I hope Ban Dai would make a MG Test Type but the big cheese at Ban Dai havent come up with this decision yet!

Posted by: BlastorBlade Nov 18 2006, 04:22 AM
I agree...both of my HG Eva's have given me a few heart attacks. The quality of those things are way below even my LG Tekkaman Blade models. Sachiel's poor quality is also rather disappointing. It cost be a bit (around AU$60), is partially metal, yet falls apart whenever you walk into the room! (It's actually http://www.extremecollectables.com/evthiransacf.html but we pay a huge margin for the honour of actually having this sit in a shop, ready to buy.)

Maybe we'll get to see MG Eva's when the new series comes out? If I'm not mistaken, Bandai hasn't released any Eva's in MG form, yet have released 2 different PG Eva-01's. We can only hope (not that I'll buy one...it's criminal that I can't give them the attention they deserve...)

I had a plug capsule and dummy plug capsule painted in detail but since we never really see these plugs in the kits since it's inside the mecha I didn't bother showing it.

Eva 01 with the Magoroku sword. Yes the Magoroku like all HG model weapons in the Eva set were all plain black so this was all painted using Gundam Markers and Top Coat spray afterwords. I have the Wakizaki side sword (i think that's how you spell it) all painted as well and the sheets for the swords but I just didn't take a picture of them cuz they are stored in the big cabinet somewhere (takes too much time to pull them out). Note that it's my bro who painted all of them since he has a very steady hand with those gundam markers.

Eva 00a, shield completely painted black and sprayed so it doesn't peel. The head was quite a killer to paint.

Eva 00b, no word stickers attached on the arms.

Eva 02, Bazooka all painted yet the blue is peeling off a bit. Since this was the 1st Eva kit me and bro had bought the head was with stickers attached. If we had known better we should have painted the head instead but it's harder to paint it when all the parts were attached. The 4 eyes inside aren't painted as well.

user posted image
Eva 03, yes a lot of time was spent painting that side positron cannon. My friend has the Angel 13 version...makes me think if I should have gotten that one instead of this one but oh well.

user posted image
Eva 04, probably the biggest mistake was to Top Coat spray the whole kit which took out the true shine of the silver. To the other Evas using Top Coat is good because it adds gritty realism as if the kits were painted, but in the case of Eva 04 it was the other way around. Although in this pic it looks like it's shiny, believe me it ain't, that's just the camera because the kit was amazing to stare at when it wasn't sprayed but it's too late now.

Eva 05a, wingspan all painted and sprayed

user posted image
Eva 05b, the difference of this Eva 05 with the one above is the wings bend just like the Wing Zero Custom, a rubber flexible head compared to the original, and the perfect size replica of the Lance of Longilus (unlike Eva 00b above which was 1/2 the original size)

Heehee, yeah I was a crazy Evangelion retard for a really long time. A lot of the credit goes to my bro's genius painting of the miniature, I'm pretty much the back-up or in between guy but I mostly specialize in larger scale biggatures. We have a large collection because of a collaboration of hobbies.

Aside from that peeps, thanks for the compliments...I'm shocked at the response alone w00t2.gif.

This is sad, but I can't remember...

Did Toji die in the anime? I know he did in the manga...

Whoa... was this Evangelion manga called Shinji Ikari Raising or something ever released in North America? Cause I am reading the first few chapters and it's hilarious!

It's good that you added the line detailing smile.gif. I'm just lucky I had help in painting my kits. Although we had to tone down the line colors a bit with napkins and eraser so it doesn't look too flat. I'm impressed still with how your kits stood out. For some reason looking at other Eva kits just like BlastorBlade's kit and yours in comparison to mine is surreal but I guess the differences of work quality fascinate me the other way around as if it's fresh new to look at grin2.gif .

Sorry BOZZ for starting a separate topic, but for your question as Metamorphic stated.

Remember that Touji's one leg and one arm was amputated when he survived in the anime.

And I'm not sure but maybe the Shinji Ikari Rising, you might be referring to "Angelic Days? (the alternate american name)" or "Girlfriend of Steel 2" (the original name)? Tell me if I'm wrong because Shinji Ikari Rising is like a game I think unless it is a manga.

wtf happened to my previous post here?! o_O;

oh well, to repost

the shinji ikari raising is a game, along with ayanami raising and girlfriend of steel 2. angelic days is the manga adaptation of GoF2, so i think thats the bozz reference

I've still yet to post the 13th angel pic, though i screwed up painting the outstretched neck, so there's HUGE colour contrast :S crap, and some PVC figures i came across (those $2 figurines from those capsule machines)

and chidoki, with the eva 05 a and b, which one is b? i thought they only ever released the HG model

They released 2 versions. Here are the links.

and then this one came out later on

There is a manga of the Shinji Rising game, just as there is that Angelic Days one, sadly only 2-3 chapters were scanlated (one of which had Gendo wanting to give himself and fatherly love to Shinji for Valentine's Day).

@Chidoki: It's not a seperate topic you got going there, it's about your Evangelion collection, it's still on-topic to me... tongue.gif

Hey Chidoki I was wondering if there was anything to be aware of about the PG EVA kit my friend had his in storage for two years now but recently he went on modelling frenzy and bought a compressor, airbrush and a huge collection of paint

As for models he got

all the warriors in that samurai BB Senshi show (sorry dont know what its called), lots of Kuroro Gunsou models and figures, MG Sazabi, Crossbone X1, F91 and most the OYW range! A pic from the early phase of his purchases

So having so much to build he has offered me the EVA kit for $120 which is $179 cheaper than buying the kit at Astro

Posted by: Chidoki Nov 24 2006, 07:43 AM
Building perfect grade is more tricky because of all the rubber around it. Well I had trouble building it because all the black in the whole kit had the rubber just don't get carried away with over cutting the rubber parts with the scissors I guess. When I had perfect grade built was around the time it came out first, which may be around 2000 - 2001 maybe or earlier? Well it's been so long so I don't remember anymore.

The best part about perfect grades is they are also easier to paint because the parts are bigger (whew thank goodness). I don't remember spraying the kit though, probably because I didn't spray it since the rubber was in the way. So maybe i sprayed the parts before putting them together, but i don't remember anymore.

$120 sounds like a steal actually, but I don't know if they sell it any cheaper. It's all up to you.

I'll follow up more info if anything comes up my mind.

Woah!!! You still have that pic! LOL you should remember what happened to mine!!! hehhe

we were looking at the stack of photos for the last day on set and the promo dinner for a local filming project that we happened to star in.

After a good laugh and watching the copy of our 6 months hard work my friends happened to open up a fizzed up bottle of Fanta and got the drink all over the white carpet and half of the shots were ruined by sticky orange liquid

Posted by: Initial Dream Nov 28 2006, 01:39 AM
HAHA that was the biggest mess to clean up! LOL having metioned EVA in this topic I went to dig out the VHS tapes that I recorded when Neon Genesis was broadcasted on SBS!

Its great but after the fight against that angel that opened up the dirac sea and swallowed EVA 1 the story started to get really weird

I really enjoyed watching the fight against Sachiel, EVA2 in D Type armour, catching the angel and the synchronised dance between EVA1 and EVA2

So guys whats are your favourite moments?

Posted by: ?wha? Nov 28 2006, 01:42 AM
favourite moment......

in order theyd be

1. ep 19, 400% sync nuff said biggrin.gif
2. End of Eva... Shinji: *I'm so Fked up* FINALLY!!!!!!
3. Rei coming out of the shower into shinji ep 5 biggrin.gif

Eat the angel and get a brand spanking new S2 Engine!!!!!!

I liked how EVA 0 got the new make over and got shoulder holsters and a crazy blue scheme!

Shinji's reaction to Asuka's explanation on "thermal expansion"

LOL I think I can also get more of Shinji being arrogant and cocky that episode where he found out he had the highest sync ratio was so refreshing! Better than seeing him moping aorund all the time.

Nearly all the scenes with Misato and Kaji arguing

Asuka's debut with EVA 02, ruining half of the UN Pacific Fleet and dressing shinji in her molded plug suit

Asuka finding out that she wasnt alone when she was in EVA 02's entry plug and figuring out how to use the AT Field properly

Rei and Shinji fighting against that drilling angel with the deadly particle beam that sniper rocks!

man theres so many!!! And a question for the people that built the PG EVA is spray can model paint safe to spray on the rubber suit! How could they release such vital parts in NAVY!!!!!

Posted by: haspieuw Nov 28 2006, 04:48 AM
what i also find a great scene
was when EVA 1 went beserk for the first time
a wide jump and the angel and then keep punching at its core

and the ep when EVA 1 breaks out of a sphere
while Asuka with an expression : WTF !!

Posted by: MidnightViper88 Nov 28 2006, 02:09 PM
I enjoyed the battle against Zeruel...That was a vicious Angel; Would've easily destroyed NERV's Eva fleet if it weren't for Unit 01 going berserk...

...but then again, it's always convenient Unit 01 goes berserk when Shinji finds himself in an unescapable pile of shit... tongue.gif

fav eva moments aye?

I've got a couple so here's my list in no particular order:

- The montage where Shinji and Asuka had to sync. with each other, loved it when Shinji went rolling after Asuka kicked him XD Was pretty funny seeing the shots of unit 01 and 02 owned, head first into the ground aswell.

- All the EVA fights!

- Misato waking up orderly and early for once tongue.gif

I've got more but can't be bothered to list and remember them all atm lol =P

LCL Fluid, right?

Well, my fave moment would have to be the "Baloney Pony" line in episode 26. Rei can be really adorable when she tries.

In angelic days?

Whenever Rei does something cute. How can shinji not hit that?

Yeah, that one is good, there was this other AU Eva manga called Rising Shinji Project which has this one Valentine's Day chapter which is hilarious in that Gendo acts totally opposite to the way he does in the original Eva story.

Also of note, "Tokyo Chuo Post Office will have a 2 limited edition ink stamps available for customer use on February 23rd only. The ink stamps feature images of Shinji Ikari and EVA Unit 01." (ANN) - now they'll be worth collecting!

Just came across some interesting tidbit on the Evangelion rebuild movies. The first three movies will be an alternate retelling of the TV series (including many new scenes, settings, backgrounds, characters), and the fourth movie will be a completely new conclusion to the story.

The first movie is only a few months away! Summer 2007!

Posted by: ?wha? Feb 5 2007, 01:41 AM
nice going bozz!

btw, my sister just came back from HK with an eva 02 for me tongue.gif will post pics once i can get around to building it......

Posted by: Chidoki Feb 5 2007, 02:11 AM
Well so far the only thing we do know about the first movie that is supposedly for certain is the re-telling of the first 6 episodes the way Hideaki Anno intended them to be. However because of the budget of the original series, this time he is able to go all out how the first 6 episodes should have looked like the way he originally wanted them.

I'm still curious however to what new characters Anno is suppose to add into the mix within the 4 movies.

The 4th movie with a new conclusion sounds very promising however.

Same here, I do wonder if he'll introduce characters from the Evangelion games.

I doubt that. From what I've been reading from my sources, it's a retelling of the TV series the way Anno really wanted it to be told. But, this time it's with less mind f**king. Gainax is saying that they won't be leaving any unanswered questions this time around. That kind of tactic is something that was popular in the mid to late 90's, as I've seen it in a lot of anime's from that era. It kept people wanting more and they kept talking about it, too. People still specuate on some of the unanswered questions about EVA's story. People now, don't like that stuff, they want a conclusion without questions left behind. Hopefully that's what we get.

Posted by: BOZZ Feb 5 2007, 10:53 AM
Heh, you know, I still don't know where the mind trip happens. When I watched it the only part that came off as weird were the last 2 episodes.

Heh, you know, I still don't know where the mind trip happens. When I watched it the only part that came off as weird were the last 2 episodes.

The last two episodes of the series were seriously condensed because they ran out time and money. So they did what the Japanese do best in this situation. Reused old stills and scenes to make up most of the last two episodes. The End of Evangelion movie was what Anno wanted the last two episodes to be. You can tell cause some of the scenes the movie show up in the last episode, like you catch a glimps of Ritsuko face down in a pool of LCL after she was shot by Gendo.
These 4 new movies are supposed to be how he really wanted the series to turn out, I guess. Or it's a, "Wouldn't have been cool if this happened instead of that or wouldn't this look better then the original design?" kind of thing. I was reading an interview in a Japanese magazine that was translated and posted on a message forum. It was an interview with a Producer at Gainax, I think. He talked about him and Anno were rewatching EVA and Anno kept commenting on how he would have done the series differently if he had better control of the series or something like that. I think these four episodes will be "his" version, without the mind f**king. Please! Anno Please! No more unanswered questions! pinch2.gif

Posted by: BOZZ Feb 5 2007, 01:42 PM

I remember reading something about them mentioning the limitations in animation that they had to deal with back then, and that it hindered their orignal concept and they had to work around it. I know that some of the characters are going to look alittle different as well as the EVA's and Angels. The story will be presented slightly differently, but with all the new crap that has been piling out of Gainax's merchandicing machine in the last year, people are starting to wonder if they have any relation to the new EVA movies. I.E. the Angel XX series.

Well, these 4 movies are basically a retelling of the TV series and EoE. So, I'm sure a portion of it will be the same. From what was let out of the bag a few months back, the first two movies will be a retelling of the TV series and the last two movies will be a new ending, replacing EoE.

You sir, know something I don't. I didn't know Kaworu was going to be around in the beginning. Maybe the story will be more like Angelic Days then? I haven't read the Manga, yet. I just know it's a take from the alternate reality Shinji creates in episode #26 of the TV series.

Now this is interesting...

"With 4 new animated Evangelion movies now confirmed and in production there has been some questioning regarding the Japanese voice casting. All of the main original members of the TV and Movie cast are still living but some have retired or moved away from voice acting work. Megumi Hayashibara (Rei Ayanami) had retired for a period but then returned to seiyuu work. Likewise, Yuko Miyamura (Asuka Langely Sohryu) is thought to have put some distance between herself and voiceover work. I knew about both of those voice actresses being very unlikely to work on a new Eva, but I didn't know the later would only work if her travelling expenses were paid.

A comment from one of her her last known public appearances can be viewed at her official website at the above link mentioning paid travelling expenses would be a requirement to persue any further vocal work."

Oh I see... Well if you've worked as a voice actor for years and got a big break into actual acting I think I'd run with it (acting) and never look back myself.

I think most voice actors have large screen aspirations.

LOL ill laugh if Anno actually used that piece of music but followed it with an awesome battle scene which was direct to the point and pretty to watch.

scare the audience into believing theres a mind rape involved then treat them to some EVA goodness!

yknow, the moment any fan of eva hears the hallelujah thingy they'll run out screaming blindly around and out the door to prevent the horrendous mindrape that should follow....... instead its a lot of Rei fanservice XD

"Don't Drink This" Coffee and "LCL" Orange Juice goes on sale on April 12th
On April 12th, fans of the legendary Gainax series Shin Seiki Evangelion (Neon Genesis Evangelion) will have the chance to "drink" the anime as well as watch it. Gainax, Movic and retail store Animate have announced that they will be selling special cases of Neon Genesis Evangelion soft drinks. The drinks can be purchased at Animate stores or from the EVA store on the Gainax website.

The drinks will be sold as individual cans and in cases of 6 cans for 945 yen (about 8.50 US Dollars). The cases include two cans of black coffee with "Don't Drink This" printed on the can, three cans of "LCL" Orange Juice, and a coin bank as an added bonus to people who buy the case.

The printing on the case box includes images of Gendo Ikari saying "If you're going to drink, hurry up. Otherwise, go home!" and Shinji Ikari saying "I don't even know what's in it! There's no way I'm drinking this!" The quotes and pictures are a parody of a famous scene from the first episode of the anime featuring main character Shinji and his father Gendo.

Those who have seen these media have noted that several Japanese katakana characters in the "Evangelion" title have been changed over the previous spelling. A different "E" character is used and the "O" has been replaced with "WO". The first fillm is expected to encompass the storyline of the first 6 TV epeisodes. A special internet website will be launched through Yahoo Japan to coincide with the announcement on the 17th. Content there will include messages from the production staff. There have been around 6000 merchandise items produced around Evangelion to date, with total sales approaching 150 billion Yen or more

^ Any follow up on that yet? It's already the past the 17th, well atleast here in Australia and probably Japan anyway lol =P

But yea here's something interesting i found over at ANN.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3123.

Looks like they finally got an entry up for the Live-action movie, cuz i don't remember it being there last time i checked EVA up. It says the "Movie is currently in pre-production. Slated for 2007 release. Budget is estimated to be between $100 million and $120 million.". Although it's validity and reliability is abit questionable though as they may just be getting live-action and remake movies confused or just basing on pure rumours and speculations... still something interesting to take note of imo happy.gif

Posted by: haspieuw Feb 17 2007, 06:45 AM
the budget for the live-action is quite serous ... i think they want to make a canon of it
i hope the movie will come out in europe *praying*

QUOTE
On February 17th, Shin Seiki Evangelion (Neon Genesis Evangelion) creator Anno Hideaki made a statement in the form of a movie poster that appeared in theatres all over Japan. The announcement was also posted on the new Evangelion movie and Yahoo! Japan portal sites for the film, which also launched on Friday.

A translation of the entire announcement is as follows:

Many different desires are motivating us to create the new "Evangelion" film.

The desire to portray my sincere feelings on film.
The desire to share, with an audience, the embodiment of image, the diversity of expressions, and the detailed portrayal of emotions that animation offers.
The desire to connect today's exhausted Japanese animation [industry] to the future.
The desire to fight the continuing trend of stagnation in anime.
The desire to support the strength of heart that exists in the world.

Finally, the desire to have these wishes be realized.

For these purposes, we used the best methods available to us to make another Evangelion film.
Many times we wondered, "It's a title that's more than 10 years old. Why now?"
"Eva is too old", we felt.
However, over the past 12 years, there has been no anime "newer" than Eva.

Specifically, among the stagnant mood of the present day, it is the portrayal of will - not technology - that is most important.
To support the fans that support animation, we felt that a work that would appeal to middle and high school-aged men, who quickly grow away from Anime, was necessary.
When we decided that we wanted to something to support the anime [industry] of today, the determination to return to this title was strong.

As the creator of this project, [I assure you that] a very new-feeling Evangelion world has beeen constructed.
For this purpose, we are not returning to our roots at Gainax. I have set up a production company and studio, and it is in this new setting that we will start again.
Without looking back, without admiration for the circumstances, we aim to walk towards the future.
Thankfully, we have gathered staff from the old series, new staff, and many other fantastic staff to work on this series.
We realize that we are creating something that will be better than the last series.

”Eva" is a story that repeats.
It is a story where the main character witnesses many horrors with his own eyes, but still tries to stand up again.
It is a story of will; a story of moving forward, if only just a little.
It is a story of fear, where someone who must face indefinite solitude fears reaching out to others, but still wants to try.
We hope that you look forward to the 4 new retellings of this story.

In closing, it is also our job to provide a service to our customers.
Although it seems obvious, we aim to create a form of entertainment that anyone can look forward to; one that people who have never seen Evangelion can easily adjust to, one that can engage audiences as a movie for theatres, and one that produces a new understanding of the world.

This fall, we hope you can join us.

Creator/General Director, Anno Hideaki

The anime powers that be in Tokyo have apparantly put idol Shoko Nakagawa on the fast track to becoming one of 2007's most noted anime singers. Besides themeing GAINAX's coming Gurren-Lagann, popular idol Nakagawa will cover the Evangelion TV OP "Cruel Angel's Thesis" on her new "shikotankaba (anime hen)" mini album which goes on sale in Japan on May 2nd. 5 other anime theme covers will appear on the cd. The original Yoko Takahashi single, first sold in 1995 has sold over 1 million copies. Nakagawa has cosplayed at public events as Rei Ayanami many times.

Perhaps we have the new singer of the OP for the new movies?

I decided to do a quick google search of Shoko Nakagawa in a Rei Ayanami suit if it fits her. Apparently I didn't find her in a Rei cosplay crying2.gif , but instead I saw a pic of her as Haruhi laugh.gif and a few other cosplays.

I finally read Angelic Days Volume 4 the other day. I found it quite interesting - it finishes the main story arc acceptably, while Volume 5 will be a gap-filling flashback. Apparently, according to the author, Volumes 5 & 6 are totally new, without any basis in the Girlfriend of Steel 2 game, unlike the first 4. Although I don't know if it'd make great animation...

I picked up volumns 1 - 3 over the weekend and read them all last Monday night. I had higher expectations for it, but it was still ok. I think it might have been geared towards a slightly different audience then the mainstream EVA fan, but it was nice to read something that was new and different and still EVA. Well, I have to go pick up volumn 4 when I get a chance. grin2.gif

Now they have to coverl the over half of the story.. the prequel. Its funny though, I thought kaworu would wreak a lot more havok than he did throughout the series

The normal one or Angelic Days?

Posted by: BlastorBlade Mar 18 2007, 08:43 PM
Angelic Days is finished, with 6 volumes, of which four have been released in English. I'm not sure about Evangelion proper...it has 10 volumes, but the gap between Volumes 8, 9 and 10 (according to http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=2440&page=28) were two years each (2002 for Vol 8, 2004 for Vol 9 and 2006 for Vol 10, if I'm reading it correctly), meaning unless Vol 10 finished it completely, there may be a Vol 11 sometime in the future.
